2 Dick's Sporting goods July 31, 2014 at 12:27 PM

I like Big 5 because they are close and usually have what I need.

Sports Basement or REI

Dick’s is huge, but it’s mostly open space. It’s not like their selection is much bigger than the more intimate shops.

I’m very athletic. Any store that has what I’m looking for. I don’t have a preference.

Big 5 on Contra Costa Blvd in Pleasant Hill. They have a friendly staff and have always been really helpful to me.

REI

12 Depends what you're looking for July 31, 2014 at 2:13 PM

I go to them all for different things.

For a water bottle, or backpack, I’d check Sports Basement first.

If I want some cross-training shoes or running/walking or water shoes, I like to go to Sports Basement or Sports Authority because I need to try on a lot of different shoes and that way I don’t have to get a clerk to wait on me and I won’t feel bad making someone bring out and put away lots of different ones.

If I want hiking boots, I’d check Sports Basement and REI to see who has the best price for the particular boot I want. If I am unsure about the fit or how well it will do on steep, slippery slopes, I’d get it from REI for the return policy.

For hockey gear, I’d check Big 5 first.

If I want fishing stuff, and don’t want to go out of my way, I go to Big 5 or Sports Authority. If I want a bigger selection of fishing stuff and have extra time, I’d go to Dick’s.

If I want Smart Wool products, I’d check Sports Basement first because they probably have the best price, if they have the item I want. Then if they don’t have it, I’d go to REI.

If I have a bicycle maintenance need, I’d go to REI, or maybe Sports Basement.

If I want to investigate a specialty tool, or specialty equipment hiking/backpacking/camping equipment, I’d go to REI.

If I want to buy a gift and don’t have a specific thing in mind, I’d go to Dick’s or Sports Basement.

Each store is great for a different purpose. REI has high-quality stuff for personal sports. And excellent maintenance for bicycles. REI & Sports Basement have good ski equipment. Big 5 and Sports Authority have standard-quality stuff and stuff for team sports, standard camping, hunting and fishing. Sports Basement has a big selection of shoes and you don’t have to have a salesperson find them for you.

etc.

Dick’s is very impressive with a huge selection.

17 Killjoy July 31, 2014 at 3:51 PM

The only store that has any real selection of archery gear is Dick’s.
Oh, and they have other things too. ;)

REI is the best in my opinion it’s soo inexpensive and have a wide variety of stuff I also like sports authority there both really cheap I wanted a hiking backpack and I found mine at REI for just $159.99 and at some places there more there waterbottles are a steal!

Women love that new huge dick’s sporting goods store/Men what ever store is the close’s & has what they need!!!!!

31 John Locker August 1, 2014 at 6:40 AM

Before I left Concord in the 1990’s, Sports 4 All on Clayton Road was my go-to place for all things football and baseball. Their inventory was higher quality than any other place in the area. I always found Big 5 to be all about quantity, not quality. And Dicks Sporting Goods is anti-2A, so they don’t get my dollars. But maybe I should check-out Sports Basement the next time I’m in town.

32 The Mamba August 1, 2014 at 9:20 AM

Sports Basement, it seems to have everything I’m looking for and more at a reasonable price…

33 Silva August 1, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Never heard of Sports Basement.
