Claycord – Talk About Whatever

July 25, 2014 18:05 pm · 124 comments

Happy Friday to all the wonderful citizens in the City of Claycord.

This is a post with no subject, you can talk about whatever you want. If breaking news happens (such as an earthquake), or you hear about something newsworthy, feel free to post it here.

1 The Closer July 25, 2014 at 6:07 PM

First maybe?

2 TraumaRx July 25, 2014 at 6:13 PM

Why do people come into the ER for toe pain or a minor scratch and then have the nerve to complain about the wait time. If it’s not a real emergency stay home!

3 anon July 25, 2014 at 6:18 PM

Happy Hot Friday!

4 Enfied303 July 25, 2014 at 6:19 PM

Have a great week y’all. Headed to Spokane this weekend. I expect all of you to behave yourselves while I gone. Last time I left for a few days Atticus had Claycord all aflame. Take care everybody and stay cool.

5 Enfied303 July 25, 2014 at 6:21 PM

Oops, should read while I’m gone.

6 Cowellian July 25, 2014 at 6:21 PM

Cowellian’s first!

#2 TraumaRx, Just more proof that government actually can do something right = education & dumbing down a populace – that was the plan all along.
Hey, It’s job security for you though!

8 Irene July 25, 2014 at 6:56 PM

TraumaRX, my mom sometimes uses the ER for things that a doctor normally handles. I try to convince her that it is only for emergencies. She said she pays for her health insurance so she can go there if she chooses.

9 Atticus Thraxx July 25, 2014 at 7:18 PM

I’ll behave myself Enfield303. Be safe. I bet the Walmart there has some milsurp stuff. Maybe even Enfields!

10 Connie Dobbs July 25, 2014 at 7:23 PM

#2 Quite the bedside manner you’ve got there. Tell us how to get fast and efficient medical service, if you would be so kind.

11 spotter July 25, 2014 at 7:36 PM

Anyone see the five single engine airplanes flying in v formation over Clayton towards Pleasant Hill at 7:25 pm?

12 Killjoy July 25, 2014 at 7:47 PM

Atticus, ’twas not I in need of the root canal. It’s ChampagneKitty.
She asked me via another media (FB) in regards to my prior root canals, if I’d had a post in any of them. Your gif showed it to her better than I was able to explain it. ;)

13 Killjoy July 25, 2014 at 7:48 PM

@just a cncordian
I actually got a Christmas Woot Bag of Crap.
Most of you wouldn’t understand this. LOL
No, there was not any coal in it. Hahahaha

14 Killjoy July 25, 2014 at 7:50 PM

@Silva, on older cameras and even some of the Polaroids (the ones that fold anyways) yes. It’s called a bellows. I have several medium format cameras that have them. My favorite of course, is the one that used to belong to my grandfather.

15 Enfied303 July 25, 2014 at 8:00 PM

Thanks Atticus. I don’t know about the Walmart, but the Big 5 usually does. The cats know something is up because they saw the luggage. I’m stoked

16 Dorothy July 25, 2014 at 8:51 PM

@Enfied303 – going to Spokane myself – next year.

17 kira July 25, 2014 at 9:04 PM

Dorothy Spokane is horrible!! Drive 35miles east pn 90 and CourdAlene Idaho. you will love !! It’s a beautiful place to visit

18 EdiBirsan July 25, 2014 at 9:08 PM

I also saw a group of small blue single engine planes practicing formation flying, There are some club(s) that are into this. Looks nice.

21 Atticus Thraxx July 25, 2014 at 9:34 PM

I have no explanation for this nor do I want one:

Be my privilege and pleasure to take the survey Edi. I’m usually shy about sharing my opinions so I appreciate the opportunity .

22 KAD July 25, 2014 at 9:41 PM

There is always Urgent Care instead of ER. And it is a lot less expensive.

23 Antler July 25, 2014 at 10:48 PM

KAD, but isn’t Urgent Care only for those affiliated with John Muir Health Care physicians? People might want to check whether Kaiser cross-covers their plan’s patients who go into Urgent Care. I do know a reciprocal plan exists between Kaiser and John Muir if you have to rush to the nearest E.R. and that happens to be John Muir….. just not sure about Urgent Care.

Maybe TraumaRX will advise.

24 Antler July 25, 2014 at 10:50 PM

Enfield, I remember your telling us you will be driving to Spokane. Long trip…. Be safe!

25 RealityCheck July 25, 2014 at 11:33 PM

@Irene #8-
I hate to say this, but your mother is a… no, I won’t say it.
NO ONE should EVER go to the ER unless it is a true emergency.
Your mother is …. no, I won’t say it. I’m being nice.

26 RealityCheck July 25, 2014 at 11:41 PM

Just adding…
I have been to the ER several times in my life… 2 or 3 times for severe chest pain (possible heart issue), once sliced off part of a finger, and once a very serious burn over my entire hand.
All were “emergencies”.
This is what the ER is for.

27 Happy Kaiser Member July 26, 2014 at 1:11 AM

Antler, a Kaiser member wouldn’t go to an Urgent Care center affiliated with John Muir. Kaiser has it’s own Urgent Care department at the Kaiser Walnut Creek medical center. It handles after hours care as well as minor injuries or procedures that don’t require a full-blown ER. All a Kaiser member has to do is call the Kaiser call center. They have great staff there, including nurses, who can help and will get you in to see the appropriate people or get a prescription sent to the pharmacy. They can even get a doctor to give you a call within a few minutes. Having raised my kids with Kaiser, I’ve had ample opportunity to chat with the advice nurses on the phone, visit both the ER and the Urgent Care clinic, and get many “same day” appointments with doctors.

28 You Smell That?? July 26, 2014 at 5:37 AM

Anyone else smell something strange outside this AM? I live near Diablo View Middle school and it kinda smells like a cross between a Skunk and an electrical fire with Broccoli thrown in. Anyone else notice it?

29 JRConcord July 26, 2014 at 6:53 AM

I think that’s an old training video for the Canadian air force. :-)

30 Antler July 26, 2014 at 7:10 AM

Atticus at #21 …… And neither can I explain why the video clip fills me with immediate delight every time I watch it, but …… thank you!

31 Silva July 26, 2014 at 7:38 AM

Enfield303, That sounds like a great trip. Enjoy, and I hope you post some highlights now & then! And eat a chile relleno for me. ;)

32 Gregor July 26, 2014 at 7:46 AM

Anyone know what happened in Concord last night I had Cops outside my house at 1am and a helicopter flying around, could hear many sirens all over town

33 mad mom July 26, 2014 at 8:32 AM

Gregor, I was wondering the same thing.

34 Howard K. Mullins III July 26, 2014 at 9:30 AM

A blonde heard that milk baths would make her beautiful. So she left a note for her milkman to leave 15 gallons of milk.
When the milkman read the note, he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons so he knocked on her door to clarify the point.
The blonde came to the door and the milkman said, “I found your note to leave 15 gallons of milk. Did you mean 1.5 gallons?”
The blonde said, “I want 15 gallons. I’m going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath.”
The milkman asked, “Do you want it Pasteurized?”
The blonde said, “No, just up to my boobs, I can splash it in my eyes.”

37 Hollyhock July 26, 2014 at 2:09 PM

Does it seem like Claycord trees are starting to turn their leaves early this year? Is it the drought?

38 SportsNutNot July 26, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Now that football season is closing in on us, I have some suggestions for the what-ever-they-are-now 49s, regarding their unconscionable money grubbing actions when they backed out on their promise to fund a kids soccer field:

1. Charge to use all stadium bathrooms
2. Forbid senior citizens from attending games
3. Eliminate singing of the national anthem

Let’s all hope that their upcoming season is total flop.

39 @ Hollyhock July 26, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Not surprising, leaves came out really early this year.

Leaves stay on trees only so long.

41 Can't Deport Us All July 26, 2014 at 4:30 PM

What happened last night around the Grant Rd exit? I was trying to sleep when I heard a thump, then followed by police sirens, cops walking around the neighborhood and helicopters.

42 Julio July 26, 2014 at 5:36 PM

Kaiser does have it’s own urgent care in Antioch also. Just call your regular doc’s number, talk to an advice nurse and you are in! So simple and doesn’t clog up the ER.

43 Antler July 26, 2014 at 6:03 PM

Oh, goody! Is it my turn?

44 Dr. Jellyfinger® July 26, 2014 at 6:22 PM

What was the answer to Atticus’ last mystery photo? I gotsta know.

45 Antler July 26, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Happy Kaiser Member at #27 ….. Thank you, and I agree that we have excellent health care facilities available to us in Concord and Walnut Creek. I still would like to know about the reciprocal payment/insurance arrangements between both hospitals’ Urgent Care centers, though. Am thinking of times when …. let’s say….. Charlie is spiking a moderately high fever, and the “other brand” of Urgent Care type of facility is closer to ones home….. or say someone gets a whale of a gouged knee suffered in a ball game and the wound has dirt ground into it (not emergency room damage, but the kid needs a professional to clean the wound, give a tetanus shot, and offer advice on type of dressing, perhaps a Rx ointment, etc.).

I do know that John Muir’s Urgent Care facilities are not inside either JM hospital, (though the one in Concord is in the 2700 Grant Street building, which is very near that hospital). The other new Urgent Care is spiffy….near Pleasant Hill BART on Treat Boulevard. Both do keep certain business hours though, so one might still have to go to the hospital ER for problems not considered “ER serious”.

46 Silva July 26, 2014 at 8:43 PM

I’m tired of waiting patiently also, Atticus Thraxx!

47 Atticus Thraxx July 26, 2014 at 8:59 PM

I was listening to the scanner I hear there’s a large fire burning over Near ygnacio valley Road /arbalotto /boundary Oaks Golf Course area; last I heard staging area is being set up does anyone know how large this is?

I just sent this note to news@claycord hoping the mayor will post this story.

Please share with Claycord readers..

I’d like to report a strange man approaching a home on Esperanza Drive at approximately 11pm this evening (Saturday) between Salvio St. and Bonifacio St. The stranger had noticed lights on in the home and front door wide open (but steel security screen door was closed and locked). Only when the front porch’s motion-detector light came on it did it bring attention to persons in the home. The individual was immediately confronted (with a machete in his face!) at which time he asked for a “Tyler.” This was a complete BS request because there has never been a Tyler at this address. After a few words were exchanged the man left the scene. Concord PD was contacted and within a few minutes it became known that this same individual had just been 2 doors down looking inside a neighbors vehicle. When the neighbor asked he was doing the strange man asked for a flashlight.

Please let your readers know to stay vigilant, keep doors and windows locked, take preventative measures, etc. in order to stay safe. It was very helpful in this case to have the motion-detector porch light which brought the attention to the residents. Also, you can’t go wrong with the security-type, steel screen doors.

Description of stranger: Appeared to be Caucasian, in his 20’s, approx. 5′ 6″, light brown wavy hair in a ponytail.

54 Happy Kaiser Member July 27, 2014 at 9:46 AM

Hi, Antler. As far as I know, Kaiser does not send any patients to John Muir’s Urgent Care centers. We Kaiser members know to call the Kaiser call center when we need care. The staff there can hook us up with whatever care we need: An appointment with a doctor or NP, talking to an advice nurse, a call back from a doctor, a prescription sent to the pharmacy, or we will be told to go to the Urgent Care center or the ER. I can’t imagine the call center ever telling a Kaiser member to go to a non-Kaiser urgent care center if they are in the Kaiser service area. Perhaps it’s possible under extraordinary circumstances such as an earthquake, but I’ve never heard of it in the normal course of business such as the examples you cited.

Of course Kaiser covers you if you end up in the John Muir ER in an emergency. But if you end up being admitted, they will get you transferred to a Kaiser hospital as soon as possible. I know that over the years they’ve had arrangements with other hospitals to provide specialized care or to handle over-flow cases (labor and deliver, for example), if the Kaiser hospital is full. But that’s always done at the direction of Kaiser staff. As a Kaiser member, I wouldn’t expect Kaiser to cover a visit to a non-Kaiser Urgent Care center unless Kaiser staff had specifically told me to go there. I bet people have done it, though. It would be interesting to know if they got Kaiser to pay for it.

55 Dr. Jellyfinger® July 27, 2014 at 10:24 AM

I love Saturday Mornings! Today I can just lay around all day & recover from my hectic week. Maybe watch the ball game & drink some beer. Then tomorrow is Sunday & I can really relax!

56 I went to a local sandwich shop July 27, 2014 at 10:54 AM

yesterday evening and experienced something I would like to share.

The sandwich shop is small and narrow, a door in the very back, facing the entrance is the restroom. Upon entering, I noticed a woman holding the door to the restroom open and heard her yelling at someone inside the restroom to hurry up and urinate (she used a more common word) and get out of there. I heard the toilet flush (door still wide open) and a child rushed out, obviously without washing her hands.

With the restroom door still wide open, the companion of the woman, a male with trousers hanging and falling onto the floor, entered and urinated, flushed and left the restroom. Obviously without any commonly acceptable sanitary precautions.

The woman bought and order sandwiches and left.

I am not a prude but the family’s behavior was simply disgusting. As the common denominator of acceptable decency has fallen and continues to fall, I expect these people will be urinating where they stand before long and that will be perfectly acceptable to some people. May even be celebrated as a right and privilege.

57 Marissa July 27, 2014 at 12:21 PM

First! Went for my monthly self-help meting. A few clicks an clans but nothing new and very refreshing., especially after a long week. :-)

58 Silva July 27, 2014 at 2:11 PM

First responders seem to make the call as to whether or not members make it to Kaiser. I spent a week at Alta Bates once because they had a burn unit. My mom spent a week in John Muir’s CCU because she was deemed too critical to take all the way to Kaiser. They all pay each other’s humongous bills in the end’s what I was told.

59 Antler July 27, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Thank you, Happy Kaiser at #54!

Just to reassure Kaiser plan members, though:. If you are seriously injured in an collision (or even at home) or are otherwise in SERIOUS medical trouble of any kind, the ambulance will transport you to the NEAREST emergency room! And Kaiser will cover your care without having given prior permission for transport destination. From then on, everything “Happy Kaiser Member” detailed kicks in.

60 Dear Mr. Macho Naco July 27, 2014 at 5:05 PM

If you must cross three lanes of traffic, please haul ass when doing so. Not making me slam on the brakes and cutting me off. To boot you stopped along side me, almost hitting me, to let me know how macho you really are. I would advise against this behavior for you in the future, as you do not know the person you are harassing. This behavior may be acceptable in other countries, but what you did may be considered a crime here.

61 Killjoy July 27, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Some years ago, my stepfather hurt his back playing racquetball at The Big C.
The ambulance came to get him. He asked where they were taking him, they told him Mt. Diablo. He insisted they take him to John Muir. They declined, telling him Mt. Diablo was closer, and that’s where he was going.
He tried to get out of the ambulance, and they asked “What do you think you’re doing?” He said he was going to John Muir.
That’s where they took him.

So, you do have a say in things. Unless of course it’s a life or death situation.

62 Silva July 27, 2014 at 6:45 PM

That’s true Killjoy. At the time of our transports we were just as happy not to be taken to Kaiser, so we didn’t fuss. Wherever you end up, if your insurance provider isn’t going to pay them they probably won’t keep you long.

65 Cuppa Coffee July 28, 2014 at 9:10 AM

Enfield303, might you cruise past Multnomah Falls in your travels? It’s in the Colimbia River Gorge, about a half hour outside of Portland. That is of course, if you’re driving. It’s well worth the side trip. Although it’s crazy busy on a weekend.

69 Irene July 29, 2014 at 6:53 AM

I was reading on KTVU’s website that there is a woman that is traveling to Sierra Leone to bring a 14 year old boy that she is adopting back to her home in the Bay Area. The boy’s hometown is the epicenter of an Ebola out break that is happening now. She doesn’t want him to get Ebola, understandable, and get him ready for school. I hope they quarantine both of them beyond the incubation period before allowing them to travel. Does anyone else have a problem with this?

To save you looking for a Costco employee to ask, again they have stopped carrying Pleasant Hill Farms Coffee. Employee I spoke with said many members he’d talked to were not happy about it.

If you can not find it at other stores, can order it direct from supplier.
Ordered from them last time Costco stopped carrying it and I’ll be doing it again, two bags and shipping is free.

KAD is absolutely right. :-) Complaint forms do wonders.

75 Jojo Potato July 29, 2014 at 4:57 PM

@ Irene : I read that story about the boy (14) getting adopted out of Liberia in the midst of a growing Ebola epidemic. I’m really questioning this woman’s motivation. The idea of the great white woman swooping into darkest Africa to save one bright high school student doesn’t really cut it for me. Yes, it’s sad if people have to grow up and die in poverty and disease but is this the way to help? Seems like a major ego trip for the woman who is expecting the U.S. government and embassy staff to drop everything and try to get together the birth certificate etc. that would be needed to make the adoption legal. Yanking the boy out of his family and country for his benefit and her gratification is like trying to put out a brush fire with an eye dropper. There are lots of American kids that need adopting and have a much better chance of making the transition to a white suburban high school. Raising money and donating to Médecins sans Frontières or other agencies on the front line of this crisis would be a much better approach.

76 Atticus Thraxx July 29, 2014 at 5:36 PM

Jojo I cannot argue with your logic, but this is an emotional act. A human act, therefore capable of being both illogical (arguably dangerously illogical) and beautiful at the same time. People can be frustratingly irrational, but that don’t make them wrong.

“In order to protect yourself, take the following steps.
Take your house keys off of your key ring if you’re handing your car keys to a mechanic, valet or other car service.
If you’re not using your key to unlock or lock your home, keep it in your pocket or purse.
Protect your keys like you would a credit card.”

Here’s something you don’t see everyday, a bear saving a crow:

I have to say ok or my own piece of mind and idiots.

Atticus, it looked like that bear wanted to tear that thing to shreds-but it realized that it was just tasteless and left it alone. Wasn’t that a dead bird on the rocks partially eaten?

Cool! Southwest has a flight tracker so you can see how far you are from your destination. Mine happens to be home. Yay! Back to California.
When Enfield303 gets back, it’ll be interesting to see if it was as warm in the part of Washington he was in, as it was in Vancouver. Hot, humid and muggy. I felt like I was back east. Sheesh.

Drought update:

Los Vaqueros is at 79% of capacity, compared to an average of 60% for all California reservoirs. We are in very good shape here in Claycord.

Also, things are NOT as bad statewide as they were at this time of year in 1977, the last serious drought of this magnitude. Back then the reservoirs were drained down to 41%.

Just wanted to offer a positive spin to the doom-and-gloomers with brown lawns and bad attitudes :)

oh great mike, so tomorrow everyone will water their yards and take that long shower they’ve been wanting and we’ll have half that amt. of water. just kidding. that’s interesting.Where did you get the info? i’ve been conserving more, today i figured out that i can soap up and then get in the shower and rinse, excepting hair. but, the ‘real simple’ magazine said to skip using shampoo and use just conditioner. i tried that once and it worked fine. i guess the concept is the more oils you strip away, the more that get produced. Where did you get the info?

Has anyone else’s jaw dropped when they heard the “Hale to the V” Commercials? What”s next? I do concur with the concept of female empowerment, but how did the shirts get that one over? Would they ever make a product for smelly male parts and sell it by elevating the letter “P” or “P” and “S” as if they are a revered secret society?

Ah, the good old double standard renews it’s viability.

@Silva – coffee

We like Yuban because it has a better flavor than Maxwell House or Folgers. Our very favorite is hand roasted in Portland, it’s made by Stumptown and it’s delicious, but very expensive :-/

123 Silva August 1, 2014 at 5:49 PM

#122, I guess if I had to choose between the first three mentioned it would be Yuban. Or I’d switch to tea for a while. :)

Shasta Daisy at #119 …. That’s right! Glad you caught my joke! (After all, I did forget to put the winky smiley face after my comment…and that’s always risky around here!)
