CHP officers pursued a driver in a stolen car 23 miles from Berkeley to Martinez this morning before the suspect crashed and surrendered, a CHP officer said.

The officers first spotted an Acura reported stolen by San Pablo police on Interstate Highway 80 near Gilman Street at about 9 a.m., CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.

The driver sped away when officers tried to stop him, then headed north on Highway 80 to state Highway 4, Wilkenfeld said.

He drove faster than 100 mph, Wilkenfeld said, but the officers stayed with him until he tried to evade them by driving in the center median near Pacheco Boulevard just past Martinez.

The median is grass and dirt, and the Acura spun out and crashed. The driver didn’t hit any other vehicles and he wasn’t injured, Wilkenfeld said.

The driver surrendered there and was identified as Felix Blas, 37, of Berkeley.

Blas was booked into jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, recklessly evading police and an outstanding failure to appear warrant for weapons charges, Wilkenfeld said.

Time to lock up this d-bag and throw away the key.

That’s Odd…..Usually Acura sedans have great speed and maneuverability in dry grass and dirt.

I saw this guy in the morning on my way from 4 to 680. 6 CHP’s were behind the wrecked car. The guy was standing on the ground, had his arms out and was shaking his head looking down at the ground. …he was also smiling. No kidding.

The driver could not have headed north on 80, 80 runs east and west.
On the interstate highway system even numbers run east and west, odd run north and south.

felix blas must not be a good driver then….. :-)

His mother is so proud!!!

7 @! July 8, 2014 at 5:07 PM

@! With your theory you can only fly Southwest Airlines to the South/west. 80 is called east and West. But it runs North/south in that area.

Instead of arresting him they should get him the help he needs , a community based ,diversity celebrating , federal program.

Of yesterday’s pursuit by concord PD?
Ended on Hwy.4 just passed 680 outbound.
Guess that and a shooting reported on Lacey
lane a few days ago isn’t news anymore.

If I had a son, he would be just like Felix….BHO

@!
So tell me…what directions does 680 run smarty pants?

12 Killjoy July 8, 2014 at 7:40 PM

All these @$$holes who steal cars think they are Mario Andretti, and can outrun the police in a stupid Acura. What the hell is wrong with them?
Yeah, stipe question. They are criminals and not smart enough to know they can’t get away with this crap.

13 Anon July 8, 2014 at 8:06 PM

Hey Bart Police! You can catch car thieves too in Bart parking garages and parking lots if you try hard enough.

“Stipe” should have been “stupid” in my previous comment.
As in stupid autocorrect on my iPad.

Sickening isn’t it!

17 McNutcase July 8, 2014 at 8:35 PM

At that point, 80 East is actually slightly West of North, and is also West on 580. The route direction and actual physical direction don’t always match.

@Curious George #11:

“So tell me…what directions does 680 run smarty pants?”

! is actually correct. Two-digit interstates (2DI’s) that are even are east-west; hence I-80 East and I-80 West. But three-digit interstates (3DI’s) don’t have that same restriction; hence I-680 is called I-680 North and I-680 South.

Well….. who’d steal a car like that anyway? It’s all smooshed & bendy.

20 MrDioji July 8, 2014 at 11:17 PM

80 East is also, simultaneously, 580 West… and heads north. Wild, I know.

3 digit Interstates can go any direction since they are typically bypasses/alternate routes and not the actual Interstate. Some of the 3 digit Interstates are a circle.

21 TJ July 9, 2014 at 7:29 AM

We need to close off Hwy 4 at Martinez and keep the Berkeley trash out of our town!

22 tasha July 9, 2014 at 9:27 AM

What a novel idea, TJ, and it sounds less sane than most… I’m for it.

23 Concord Guy July 9, 2014 at 9:27 AM

Highway 101 is a north/south highway but it runs east/west in the San Fernando Valley.

24 ! July 9, 2014 at 9:29 AM

Curious George nominated me Smarty Pants, do I get a plaque or something?
I’m just curious, George.

25 PhilthyPHRESH July 9, 2014 at 9:58 AM

Lol the guy obviously never watched any of these cop chase videos that are always on, showing suspects trying to evade in the dirt. Lol. No worries, jail TV will gladly review the footage with him over the next month or so…. He will surely be re-institutionalized into a better criminal courtesy the judicial system.

26 puffandstuff July 9, 2014 at 10:41 AM

@ #21 TJ — seriously? Most people in Berkeley have more $ and better jobs than anyone in Martinez. And those UC Berkeley kids – nothing but losers right? Don’t believe the hype. Come out of your bubble.

27 Mimi (original) July 9, 2014 at 11:47 AM

North, South, East, West! We all know that freeways curve and bend in all directions, but they have to have some sort of designation for them so they choose the “predominate” direction the freeway runs, hence, 101-N/S in the Sunnyvale area when clearly you are heading into the setting sun at 5:30pm!

28 Old Kezar Guy July 9, 2014 at 1:52 PM

@concordguy. 101 is not an Interstate

29 The Closer July 9, 2014 at 3:28 PM

@ Old Kezar Guy

Highway 101 is indeed an interstate highway. It starts around Gilroy and goes all the way to Port Angeles Washington.

30 Enfield303 July 9, 2014 at 4:16 PM

@ The Closer

Actually 101 starts in LA. But it is an Interstate so to speak.

31 The Closer July 9, 2014 at 6:20 PM

I stand corrected. I guess I should of turned the page on the Atlas huh?

32 Another model citizen... July 9, 2014 at 9:59 PM

Was it worth it?
