A 22-year-old Pittsburg man who was badly injured in a solo-car wreck on state Highway 4 in Concord over the weekend was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol, a California Highway Patrol officer said today.

The man was driving east on Highway 4 near the Solano Way exit at high speeds at 11:59 p.m. Saturday when the car went off of the roadway and rolled down an embankment, through a chain-link fence and into a telephone pole, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

Fransen said the man suffered major injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle and landed in lanes of traffic on Arnold Industrial Place east of Peralta.

He was taken to John Muir Medical Center to be treated and an update on his condition was not immediately available this afternoon.

Investigators believe the man was driving under the influence at the time of the crash, Fransen said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about what led up to it is asked to call the CHP’s Contra Costa area office at 925-646-4980.

Very sad. When are people going to learn that drinking and driving is not a good combination?

People know they shouldn’t drink and drive. But they forget once they start drinking.

Badly injured you say? I can stop by on the way home from work tomorrow and crack him with something hard and heavy a few times. I mean, if you think it’ll help. You know me…community kinda guy.

He is very fortunate that the only one he hurt was himself. Maybe he will learn from this painful experience to slow down and never drive when impaired (although, sadly, I doubt it will have a lasting effect).

I can’t imagine trying to live with the knowledge that I had killed a mother and baby, like the other guy did.

Been staying cool these past few weeks and have peeked at local news on Claycord on and off. The theme these weeks has been DUIs and problems related to operating a dangerous weapon while drinking.
What is happening? Come on….don’t drink if you drive. This is crazy. You want to pollute your body its your business. But to operate a loaded weapon while drinking is temporary insanity. I say send ’em for a 72,hour hold in Napa State. Wake up with the general population and I’d bet the DUIs would end or decline 😉 LOL

Awhh Atticus, June 30, 2014 at 8:31 PM

Always with the wit, no matter how dim.

Atticus, don’t you just hate it when you have to explain things for the slow learners?

When will people learn while driving not to:
1. Drive too fast
2. Talk/text on a cell phone
3. Drive drunk

it is a really sad commentary when people have nothing better to do then to ridicule this young man who could have lost his life. The article said that he MAY have been under the influenc, it did not say that he WAS under the influence. At any rate, if he was, pray that learns from the experience, that could have cost his life, rather then just a foot. He is yet a live, Thank you Lord, but will be remember this day forever as he has to live with the consequences of our actions. I’m sure many of you naysayers have drank and drove, smoked weed, used meth, mushrooms, whatever and got home one way or another.. the ones who speak the loudest and with the most negative comments are usually the ones who are guilty themselves. Try loving someone today, regardless to where they are from.
