The Water Cooler – What Are Your Phobias?

June 20, 2014 12:07 pm · 72 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

What are your phobias? (example: spiders, airplanes, clowns, etc.)

Talk about it….

Flying – and unlike most people afraid to fly – I’m not afraid to crash at all, I’m clausterphobic and feel like I can’t breathe on a plane and become a total mess with a full blown panic attack…. so I won’t fly anymore. I know it is irrational but for whatever reason that is what happens.

Roller coasters and really high amusement park rides. Used to love them, but as I’ve gotten older, I tend to panic a little after I’m strapped in (WTF was I thinking??!!) so now I just don’t. Last year went to Disneyland/CA Adventure for granddaughters first trip and went on the rocking Ferris Wheel. NEVER AGAIN!!

Anon June 20, 2014 at 12:23 PM

birds. a bird landed on me when I was a kid and they’ve freaked me out ever since. it’s pretty bad. if someone spilled food on the sidewalk and a bird is sitting there eating it, I will cross the street just so I don’t have to walk near the bird. once I was even bringing my garbage out to the dumpster in my apartment complex, saw there were a few crows perched on the door to the dumpster…turned around and brought my garbage back with me.

very irrational fear, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.

Antler June 20, 2014 at 12:35 PM

I despise staircases which have open risers……gives me a form of vertigo. It is not a fear exactly, and I can force myself to walk up or down (but I do look around for an elevator first).

Crazy woman stalking me

Falling June 20, 2014 at 12:49 PM

The Ferris Wheel terrifies me to no end as well as any skyway type ride-open spaces and height where I “think” I could tip out and fall are not a good mix. I don’t mind the roller coasters or airplane rides though, weird…it’s just the fear of being vulnerable and falling…oh, and sharks! (shudder)-an open swim in the ocean is not my idea of a good time…I feel for them and the illegal/inhumane finning practices (see Sharkwater) but I NEVER want to meet one up close and personal.

Biggest phobia is the Federal Government, IRS, NSA, VA, ATF, – they should scare the hell out of everyone.

ConcordMike June 20, 2014 at 1:07 PM

I’ve died once and experienced the peace of death. I never fear death now, but I fear the trauma that will lead up to death, i.e., a long hospital stay or enduring pain from an automobile accident or other illness. Like being in a coma and being able to know what is going on around you, but everyone thinks you can’t hear them. That kind of stuff.

Do not be afraid, your fears of immediate surveillance are unfounded.

Biting into an apple and discovering that it is crawling full of worms inside.

I have a fear of getting lost when driving to places I have not been before.

bluebird June 20, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Electrocution is my biggest fear but I also fear birds. Not sure why for either. But I fear I might die from being electrocuted.

MARRAGE!!! It cuts into my having fun.

Walnut Creek Resident June 20, 2014 at 1:47 PM

My main phobia is crossing over bridges only if I’m driving I can ride my bike but I cannot drive across any bridges. I will hyperventilate and then pass out so it’s not a good idea to drive across any bridge until I get some therapy!!!

anonanonagain June 20, 2014 at 1:47 PM

Snakes. I don’t mind centipedes but for some reason those black, glossy emotionless eyes of a snake and it’s slithering spine creep the hell out of me……

Concordejet June 20, 2014 at 1:52 PM

good point yes I get crazy women stalking all over me too haha

Dorothy June 20, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Flying. Did it once, perfect flight, no complaints. Refuse to do it again.

Also amusement rides that will turn you upside-down.

That should explain it.

Cowellian June 20, 2014 at 3:26 PM

Pierre, it could be worse. I’d hate to bite into an apple and find half a worm.

Me June 20, 2014 at 3:47 PM

Pierre, I fully understand as I have done that…in front of people no less. It was bad.

I’m truly phobic of math, esp when I have to do it when people are waiting for me. I hate but am not quite phobic of roaches. Any bug is fine but that one.

Marissa June 20, 2014 at 3:48 PM

flying bugs

Defecaloesiophobia* June 20, 2014 at 3:51 PM

especially if on an airplane or at a BART station.
.*…Fear of painful bowel movements is called defecaloesiophobia and it can be due to a painful and traumatic experience in the past like having really hard stools that had to be manually extracted by a physician, or having really hard stools that caused your rectum to bleed. This is traumatic for any person and this can trigger the phobia. Others might have developed this fear because of the presence of haemorrhoids. These engorged blood vessels in the rectal wall can be extremely painful and one may associate bowel movement with pain even if it is not anymore.

Walnut Creek Resident June 20, 2014 at 6:58 PM

I also have a phobia of rattlesnakes by my folks house. They are all over the place!!! I refuse to go there on a summer evening because those snakes come out at night on the sidewalks. Freaks me out!!!

Metal grates, storm drains and those heavy metal “things” on the sidewalks in the city, I CANNOT walk on them. I am terrified.

JRConcord June 21, 2014 at 6:46 AM

I too have this phobia. My Psychiatrist says that reading the comments section at Claycord will help me over this fear. Learning to recognize stupidity from the safety of my home where, I am safe.
Being able to recognize my fears and realize that stupid people are mostly harmless, is one of the first steps to conquering this fear. He hasn’t given me the 2nd step yet .As soon as I can go out again, Ill let you know what it is.

Used to have a toilet phobia. Back when public toilets flushed with a roaring WHOOSH!! And about 20 gallons of water. When my mom forced me to try to use it I would jump out of my skin when she flushed. I became the Incredible Bladder Woman as a result of preferring to never enter a public bathroom.

Marissa June 22, 2014 at 6:38 AM

I have an idiot phobia.
