whatever

Happy Friday to all the wonderful citizens in the City of Claycord.

This is a post with no subject, you can talk about whatever you want. If breaking news happens (such as an earthquake), or you hear about something newsworthy, feel free to post it here.

Does the extra security — having to show your photo identification in order to obtain a badge to enter JMMC — bother anyone. Some have issues with the added inconvenience, even though it’s for their benefit!

Think it’s so funny while sitting at a stop light to watch pedestrians keep pushing the walk button a gazillion times, trying to get it to change faster. Guess they don’t realize that the first push trips the switch and after that nothing else matters. Oh well, maybe it relieves their stress.

Concord City Council Meeting Agenda item on 6/10/14

Here is an item that may interest some of you regarding the Concord Naval Weapons Station.

1. LOCAL REUSE AUTHORITY CONSIDERATION ITEMS:
1. Consideration – of a short list of qualified firms to receive a Request for Proposal for the Reuse Project Area Plan implementation. Report by Michael Wright, Reuse Project Director.

Staff Recommendation: Hear the report, take public testimony, provide direction to staff
On March 18, 2014, the City received eight Statements of Qualification (SOQ). The eight firms in
alphabetical order included:
• Catellus Development Corporation
• FivePoint Communities/Lennar
• J.F. Shea Company
• Seecon Financial and Construction Company, Inc.
• Starwood Ventures
• SunCal Corporation
• Toll Brothers Inc.
• Trumark Homes

It was the review panel’s consensus that the top four firms be submitted to the LRA with a
recommendation that they receive the Request for Proposal (RFP). It is the LRA Executive Director’s opinion
that all four firms are highly qualified master developer candidates and that four is a manageable number for
the RFP part of the process and will generate sufficient competition in the City’s favor. Consequently, staff
recommends the LRA invite the following four firms (in alphabetical order) to submit RFPs:
− Catellus
− FivePoint Communities/Lennar
− J.F. Shea Company
− SunCal

Cockroaches, the oriental kind.
Absolutely disgusting! I’m just learning about these creepy things. They live in the sewers and in organic matter around the yard. They come out looking for water. These arent the German kind that live in the house. But these might come in the garage looking for water and some may make it into the house but generally don’t live in the house.
OK So those of you that know about these nasty things and have had to deal with them, what did you do? Exterminators are very expensive and i’m not sure about the toxicity. I’ve sprinkled diametacous earth all over the place even around the sewer caps. This won’t deter them but will kill them. It is safe but i don’t know how long it takes to kill one. then I”m thinking about adding boric acid. another pretty safe one. i don’t see the point of setting up traps. i don’t want to lure any to my yard. and spraying with stuff is really not going to do much. I’d like something safe to spray that would deter them.

20 KAD June 6, 2014 at 10:49 PM

CereBellum – You mean they have guards that check you out before you enter any part of the facility? It probably is a good idea in this day and age. In Nashville, earlier this year, they did not check anyone for anything. I entered a major hospital walked to the CCU, pushed a button, the door swung open and I entered a room and left without anyone even looking at me. And HIPAA, they do not know what that means in Tennessee.

21 Momo June 6, 2014 at 10:55 PM

@12
If they aren’t coming in your house who cares if they are in your back yard. Everyone has them around here. Better than dropping poison everywhere trying to kill them.

31 Antler June 7, 2014 at 6:56 AM

Hi, KAD !
Speaking now of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Campus:
The facility’s surveillance configuration differs depending on which entrance one uses. At the main entrance, I do not know whether you walk through a metal detector, but a security officer sees you (and usually gives you a very friendly greeting). Then you veer to the right to a desk where you must show picture ID and fill out a very brief form (what patient or what treatment department are you visiting, etc.) before being given a sticky name tag, which you must wear so long as you are in the hospital. There is another armed guard off to the side of that hall…..you must pass a guard regardless of which hallway you use.

It only takes a few minutes for all the above. Having had loved ones as patients there and having been a patient myself, I realize how vulnerable one is….just lying there feeling so terribly weak with IV tower and tubes “doing their thing”. Also, hospitals must try to prevent potential follow-up violence by angry (and perhaps armed) visitors when people injured in gang fights, domestic violence, or vehicle collisions are admitted.

CereBellum, l am one who truly appreciates the extra precautions taken by our fine medical center. And thank you for raising the question!

JESS, am I correct in thinking you are either a physician or a nurse? Please, would you give us your perspective?

32 Incognito June 7, 2014 at 6:57 AM

I’m always amazed at those who make faces and/or express their annoyance at any type of security measures, and yet they would be the first to protest if there were none. And, these are the same ones who make a face when asked by a cashier to present their ID when using their credit card when making a purchase. Instead of being a pain in the ass, tell the cashier “thank you for asking” – it’s for your protection moron, in case you didn’t know.

34 Annon June 7, 2014 at 7:36 AM

On Sunday June 1st I went to Cocos on Treat Blvd for breakfast. Patty was our waitress and always was wonderful. A party of 8 came in and Patty was in the process of greeting them, when she began to have a seizure.

Patty feel to the ground and ended up under a table engaged in a full epileptic seizure.

Two young ladies sprung into action. They yelled to call 911. One headed for the phone while the other went under the table to assist Patty. These two ladies controlled and secured the scene until the paramedics arrived. The manager on duty was of no assistance what so ever. The young ladies had to tell him to get Patty’s purse, to call relative, to check her file to find out if she had any medical issues. He just seemed to have no clue what to do.

Once the medics arrived the young ladies waited to provided any information the paramedics might have needed. They returned to their table, gathered their belongings paid their check and left.

As my husband and I were paying our check we said to the manager I hope you at least bought ladies breakfast if not offered them a lifetime of free breakfast. The manager chuckled and said he did not. We were shocked. We asked if he had their contact info because we wanted to thank them. He said he did not get it. We were shocked again. We would have thought he would need to fill out some kind of incident report and would need their information. We decided to leave our contact information at the restaurant and told the manager if they came back in we would appreciate it if he would pass it along because we wanted to thank them for being quick, compassionate, and selfless in helping someone who was in distress.

Im thankful they were there and its good to know there are still people who are willing to get involved. I hope they read Claycord and will go back to the store to see Patty and to get our contact info so my husband and I can say thank you

I live on Elkwood Drive in Concord, which use to be a very nice street when we moved here. What’s amazing to me is people have either bought or inherited houses on this street that were in great shape, and now they’ve let them go. So you spend a small fortune for your house that came with nice landscaping, paint and now it looks like a jungle and you painted it some “Oakland” color.
Ok, so there’s a drought PULL THE WEEDS, you don’t have to re landscape the lawn will die but keep it neat. Quit parking on it, that’s another new thing they’re doing now.
WE take pride in our neighborhood, not expecting you to bring down our house values!

41 P_Hill June 7, 2014 at 11:10 AM

This won’t help with the cockroach problems but if you have gophers try this. A few times now I had a gopher digging up my yard. I dug the mound down so I could see two tunnels going off in opposite directions. Over a four week period I tried sitting and waiting with a BB gun, a garden hose to flood it, cotton balls soaked in fingernail polish remover, exhaust from a lawn mower, gopher poison and a road flare. The road flare does burn underground so don’t cover the hole with anything flammable. None of these worked. Each time the gopher was back in a few days. I finally got rid of it by digging out the hole and dropping in two sticks of Juicy Fruit gum. One chewed and one fresh out of the wrapper untouched. Not sure which one it liked but after two days the digging stopped. Bubblicious gum works too. I used this technique three times over the last four years and it works.

42 Captain Bebops June 7, 2014 at 11:39 AM

@Wait a minute, have you talked to these neighbors? Do you even know your neighbors? Many people bought homes with every intention of keeping them up. We’ve had a little bit of an economic crisis. Many of these people probably had good jobs and then lost them and still have enough money or earn enough to keep up house payments. They are probably embarrassed. You sound like a “hard liner”. You know the kind of people who rolled out tanks on Tienanmen Square back in the 1980s.

As soon as the economy booms again I’m sure you’ll see your neighbors hiring contractors to fix things up. Just don’t hold your breathe for the economy to boom.

43 Concord1963 June 7, 2014 at 12:40 PM

@P_Hill: Your gopher solution is both humorous and engaging. It almost makes me wish I had a gopher just so I could try it! I wonder if it was the chewed or unchewed that worked ….

44 Silva June 7, 2014 at 3:11 PM

I’ve had seizures at work, and it’s not pretty from what I’ve heard! The general public can be pretty unprepared for that. Seems like restaurant managers should have more of a clue than that guy did, but I wouldn’t count on it. There are a lot of wrong things people have done trying to be helpful, like trying to stick things in the mouth to keep the person from biting their tongue. Then the poor person wakes up with busted teeth or the helpful person gets a badly mangled finger out several minutes later.. Stay away from the persons mouth! Just try to put something soft under their head, or get them away from objects with hard edges they could hurt themselves on. That’s all you need to do before the EMT’s get there.

I do not want to take them to the animal shelter, they are beautiful, but I can not keep them. I live on Lynwood Drive, Elkwood Ct is behind me. If anyone knows how to give them a good home, please advise through claycord…..I do not want to see them out running around outside. I wish people would take care the their animals. @76…Please don’t take them to the pound.I have dealt with many outside cats who had kittens and the kittens didn’t have lice and such. 2 weeks old is too young to be separated from mama. Mama does all the hard work by feeding them, it’s not until they start toddling around and eating wet food on their own that they should be separated..I wish I still lived in Concord, I would take a kitten or the mama when the kitties are good to go.

83 Antler June 9, 2014 at 4:04 PM

Annon at #76 …….. Please telephone Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) and follow their advice.

I have been in this situation with a half-grown mama cat (must have been her first heat) and her four kittens…all beautiful and so different in coloring and markings that they seemingly were sired by four different males. Mama “Deli” carefully kept her four kittens, eventually named “Pickle” (his personality), “Cheddar”(her color), “Mayo” (because of her longer hair and the streaked lighter shades), and “Pumpernickel” ( because he was a dark tortoise-shell short-hair), under the master bedroom deck. She herself came out for food and water and eventually let me stroke her and pick her up….but briefly. She finally brought the kittens up for food, which I crushed into smaller pieces, and she was not worried when I picked up her kittens and socialized them. I put worming medicine in Deli’s food at proper intervals, and later I put kitten-worming medicine in with the kittens’ food (the latter not scientific, but I set out two kitten bowls, sprinkled the medicine around evenly over each, kept two kittens at each bowl, and hoped they each would chow down somewhere near the correct amount. “Deli” was treated with flea preventative….the kind that costs a fortune and you have to work it quickly into the skin at upper back of the neck. Honestly, cannot remember whether I used flea medicine on the kittens, but maybe once prior to de-worming.

Through a relative, I learned about a woman in Antioch who worked with a feral cat no-kill foster care group. When the kittens were weaned, it was easy to place them into a large pet-carry box. [Stood the box on end....loaded the kittens in first, and mama was eager to jump in with them once I lifted her up to the opening.]. Unfortunately, I no longer have the name and number of the rescue group, and the woman contact has moved. Oh…they asked me for at least a $25 donation. I gave them more because I knew they spayed or neutered and gave all shots. And the contact let me know that Deli went to one family who already had one cat, two kittens of opposite sex were adopted by another family, and the same thing happened But you can trust ARF to give you the best advice.

You are kind to want to help the little family!

84 Antler June 9, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Tomorrow will be day three by now Penny will be very weak and probably wont be able to stay in a tree if that is where she is at. She will most likely end up on the ground very weak. Please keep a look out.

Don’t get a G.E.!!!!! The WORST brand I’ve ever owned– by far.

94 Silva June 10, 2014 at 8:19 AM

Well, no more dorky hairstyle for me! In fact, no hair! Since nobody I’ve crossed paths with so far can cut evenly, even with a razor, even at a barber shop, I took the logical next step and shaved it off. I must say, I’ve really always wanted to do this, it’s so liberating! I was dissuaded by other moms when our kids brought home lice from daycare, instead we used lots of different crap on our hair and had nitpicking sessions. I was dissuaded by my boy who said he wouldn’t be seen with me. I was dissuaded by medical professionals who said since I wasn’t having chemo I shouldn’t shave it all off. I now know what my scalp looks like. I know whether or not my head is bumpy and misshapen (luckily it is not). It’s super easy to take care of, and I can feel every wayward breeze. It’s the best way I can think of to prepare for the summer heat of Oaxaca, Mexico, (UGH!!! :( ). My family has gotten over the shock, and now they’re okay with it. Hair is a good thing, but you really don’t need it much! If you see a hot bald lady around Claycord, it could be me!

95 Antler June 10, 2014 at 8:48 AM

#91 ….. Please give people a little more info: Should we try to cover Penny with a cloth and then put her in a cage or box? Or should we just stay with her and call your number? And why be so coy with that number?…….If it’s wild out on Craig’s List anyway, don’t make the potential finder play games trying to reach you in a hurry …..just please give us a contact number so someone could respond quickly to the Penny scene!

KAD…. Thank you for the lovely compliment, but mainly it was that those kittens looked SO cute through the spaces between the deck boards that it was entirely MY pleasure.

Actually, I would have adopted two of the kittens as indoor-only cats except that we already had Cheerio and Pudd’n, the two feral cats I had rehabilitated back when the two kitty litters and two raccoon litters were growing up together and were best buddies all. (That whole tale was in a Whatever thread a few years back.). We also had two Brittanys at the time. My husband kept catching me playing with the four kittens on the deck. He’d look skyward, close his eyes, and slowly shake his head in that “Oh, pleeeeeeze nooooooooo…..” way which universally afflicts husbands.

96 Shelly June 10, 2014 at 9:16 AM

Rock on Silva! I shaved my head once and looked like a neo- nazi but I could run. 043% faster.

98 Silva June 10, 2014 at 10:59 AM

I did have some concern about the neo-nazi/skinhead issue, but with my Lands’ End clothes it’s a non issue. It was weird to see my wardrobe advertised on Claycord.com for a good while. That knot dress is really cool.

100 What the frack? June 10, 2014 at 11:38 AM

The son of the Oakland Raiders general manager is transferring from De La Salle to Clayton Valley a Charter High School to play football his senior year. He has been a star player at De La Salle after transferring there from Wisconsin for his junior year. He is says he’ll announce his college pick (either Arizona or Tennessee) next month.

From the Contra Costa Times:

“Kahlil McKenzie announced Monday night that he’s planning to transfer from De La Salle and enroll at Clayton Valley Charter for his senior year.

McKenzie couldn’t be reached for comment but posted to his Twitter account: ‘Transferring from De La Salle going to Clayton Valley Charter family decision not answering any questions about it but I’m a Ugly Eagle.'”

http://www.contracostatimes.com/contra-costa-times/ci_25932384/kahlil-mckenzie-transfer-from-de-la-salle-clayton

How can this be? I thought there was a big waiting list for CVCHS. Aren’t there NCC/CIF rules against this kind of stuff? Isn’t recruiting at the high school level forbidden?

101 What the frack? June 10, 2014 at 11:57 AM

Before I’m attacked by the typo police, I meant NCS/CIF.

Seriously, aren’t there rules against high school players transferring? Being recruited? Can he even play under these circumstances? Is CVCHS recruiting other players?

102 Tom June 10, 2014 at 12:05 PM

@ Shi ite—-88

Craig’s List is a flaky sight. I understand why people use it. The price is right, as well as the exposure.

It’s not worth it. To me anyway. You get what you pay for.

I don’t know how many Craig’s List killer stories, armed robbery car sales, prostitution……the list goes on. People will still continue to use it.

If you get burned on Craig’s List, perhaps you should’ve used better judgment.

Concord man gets 12 years for stabbing death

MARTINEZ — A Concord man pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Wednesday afternoon in the stabbing death of a neighborhood acquaintance, according to Contra Costa Deputy District Attorney Mary Knox.

Joshua Cardone, 22, was sentenced to 12 years in prison . . .

I’m thinking of getting a tattoo for my forearm. Not sure how big…but looking for advice from those with experience…if I just get a big splotch on my arm, will it turn into a recognizable image in 20-30 years?
I see a lot of elderly gentlemen with Rorschach-like splotches on the forearms that used to be an image of something. I’m hoping it works in reverse.

119 Connie Dobbs June 10, 2014 at 6:30 PM

#115 Dude. You should get an actual Rorschach blot. It would be hilarious and terrifying to hear what people think it looks like.

It’s kinda funny Connie. My comment was completely innocuous.
In response to Silva commenting that she was just an average looking bald gal, I said

132 The ostrich June 11, 2014 at 10:05 AM

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown
Ostrich behind him. The waitress asks them for
Their orders. The man says, “A hamburger, fries
And a coke,” and turns to the ostrich, “What’s
Yours?” “I’ll have the same,” says the ostrich.

A short time later the waitress returns with the
Order. “That will Be $9.40 please” The man
Reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact
Change for payment.

The next day, the man and the ostrich come
Again and the man says, “A hamburger, fries
And a coke.”

The ostrich says, “I’ll have the same.”

Again the man reaches into his pocket and
Pays with exact change.

This becomes routine until the two enter again.
“The usual?” Asks the waitress. “No, this is
Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato
And a salad,” says the man. “Same,” says the
Ostrich. Shortly the waitress brings the order
And says, “That will be $32.62.” Once again
The man pulls the exact change out of his pocket
And places it on the table.

The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any
Longer. “Excuse me, Sir. How do you manage to
Always come up with the exact change in your
Pocket every time?”

“Well,” says the man, “several years ago I was
Cleaning the attic and Found an old lamp. When
I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me
Two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had
To pay for anything, I would just put my hand
In my pocket and the right amount of money
Would always be there.”

“That’s brilliant!” says the waitress. “Most people
Would ask for a Million Dollars or something,
But you’ll always be as rich as you want for as
Long as you live!”

“That’s right..Whether it’s a gallon of milk or a
Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there,”
Says the man.

The waitress asks, “What’s with the ostrich?”

The man sighs, pauses and answers, “My second
Wish was for a tall chick with a big fanny and long
Legs who agrees with everything I say..”

I stopped in to Hop Sing’s for lunch today. If you don’t know where they are, it’s in a little strip mall on Contra Costa Blvd at the corner of Center St in Pacheco.
The last time I was there was about 32 years ago when I was a mechanic at Malibu Grand Prix.
The fact that Hop Sing’s is still there speaks volumes. Yes the food was pretty good for take-out Chinese food. It’s made fresh while you wait. No steam table stuff like other fast Chinese food places.

145 Killjoy June 11, 2014 at 7:37 PM

Atticus, that’s pretty much when I was wrenching on the cars there.
But as a mechanic, they kept us in the back. Unlike the “Pit Crew” who helped people into their cars, or the girls at the counter who sold the tickets, etc.

As for the bird displacing the water by dropping more items that sink so it could get what it wanted, that’s pretty smart of it. :)

It’s at DVC. The gates open at 5:30 and the show starts at 7:30.

@ Tom 102 and the Other responder #93. Thanks, I don’t do anything unless I can talk to the craigslist seller first. I found a decent set locally that the wife just had to have a front loader instead. 3 year old Kenmore – old school with agitator and matchihng gas dryer for less than half of what they sell for at Sears. I’ll just resell the dryer.
I can’t find any good reviews on the “modern” high efficiency washers – Lot of drama. Bad main boards, sensors etc. I don’t do enough laundry to justify the cost.
@ #93: Yep, my old washing machine was a late 90’s or early 2000’s GE!!! Transmission shot – Not worth repairing.
The part that hurts craigslist is the FYEE part. If a seller had to pay, they would definitely be responding to interested buyers instead playing hide-n-seek.

Mickey was a switch hitter too, so he surely could have bested OJ left handed. Whoa! Odd Job’s initials are OJ….. hmmmm, mere coincidence I suppose that severing heads should be a common interest for those with the same initials. Of course, Mickey, with a metal razor edged batting helmet…. it wouldn’t have the same balance as Odd Job’s bowler. Probably wobble all over the place & only offer about a 50% chance of cutting off James Bonds head. I’ll bet OJ Simpson wouldn’t be able to throw a hat at all. Mickey & Odd Job probably could handle a Stiletto OK tho.

#163, @ 12 years ago I got a Fridgidair frontloader in my Oakland house. It still runs like a champ. Never had a problem. @ 3 years ago I got an LG frontloader for my Claycord house. It has more bells and whistles, runs like a champ, no problems either. The best thing about frontloaders is that they don’t wear out your clothes nearly as fast as the old school agitator machines, and use a lot less water. My mom told me that the first machines she remembered were frontloaders, and the agitators came later.

Have I ever told you that Merriam-Webster Dictionary has a daily and fascinating “Word of the Day” email service?

Today’s word was introduced with the statement that it had been added to the dictionary only this year. It’s “freegan”.

If I don’t immediately know what the daily word means, it’s fun to play around with what might be a recognizable root from a foreign language. Often I have seen an esoteric word in print but have just continued reading (rather than looking up its meaning) because context gave general comprehension. And usually a new word added to the dictionary these days is slang I have at least heard. But “freegan”? Anybody out there???

To paraphrase, a “freegan” is an activist who scavenges for free food in restaurant trash receptacles and dumpsters so as to reduce consumption of earth’s resources. Sometimes they work in community gardens. And they sometimes organize events to encourage all the above.

Again, anybody out there?
