Police Warn of Scammers Trying to Charge Undocumented Immigrants for Driver’s Licenses

May 31, 2014 10:43 am · 68 comments

Undocumented immigrants should be wary of scammers trying to charge money for procuring California driver’s licenses, police warned today.

A new state law passed in 2013 will make it possible for undocumented immigrants to get valid California driver’s licenses starting on Jan. 1, 2015.

But some unscrupulous operators are trying to convince immigrants that they can get them a valid license now, and even posing as DMV staff and lawyers in some cases, police said.

Immigrants should be cautious of individuals who claim they can obtain a license for a fee, police said. Some scammers have asked for up to $1,000 per license, according to police.

The community should also beware of false DMV or “How to get a California license” websites, police said. The correct California DMV website is www.dmv.ca.gov.

People who plan to obtain a valid California driver’s license on Jan. 1 should prepare their personal documents to confirm their state residency and identity, police said.

Individuals can also study for the written driving test and take practice tests on the DMV website. The California Driver Handbook is available in 10 languages, police said.

Correction, scammers trying to charge illegal aliens for driver’s licenses. Just say no to PC. No more doublespeak

I’m gonna come up with a scam for scammers. Something like “Click here to pay back taxes on scams”……….

5 Cat Wrangler May 31, 2014 at 11:44 AM

What happened to our nation’s compassion and integrity? Have you not read ‘The New Colussus’ at the foot of the Statue of Liberty? Even President George W. Bush understood the plight of the illegal immigrant advocating a road to citizenship and stating, “Anyone worth their salt would do the same in the same circumstance.”

And FYI – there are a few attorneys who have collected many tens of thousands of cash payments in exchange for Visa applications that are always “pending” and not really processed. There are also many Anglo business owners who pay lower wages to their illegal workers and respond to those brave enough to complain with threats of deportation.

The immigration issue is one that should be resolved now with respect and compassion to the indignity of poverty and human suffering. I do not know one immigrant that is not sacrificing their life to work for pennies to send funds home to help family, build schools, hospitals and churches. Anyone who takes advantage of immigrants are the lowest forms of life.

“unscrupulous operators” — otherwise known as, criminals.

Will these “unscrupulous operators” be any more likely to end up in jail than those other “unscrupulous operators” — the thieves who operated (preyed/scammed) from Wall Street offices? Or will they, too, get a pass because some people feel crossing a latitudinal line without a government bureaucrat’s stamp of approval is a worse crime than theft.

7 nomorefreeride May 31, 2014 at 11:56 AM

So does anyone really thing this law will change things? They still won’t have insurance and if they hurt anyone the police do NOTHING because they are illegal. Caught driving here identified removed from America end of story. Why does the government have to make everything so difficult?

8 Landana May 31, 2014 at 12:00 PM

I don’t understand, why should I care?

9 Guillermo May 31, 2014 at 12:04 PM

They should be locking the illegal aliens up in jails.
Goodluck to the scammers.
This is complete BS

Oh boy, here we go.

11 Ven Xeter May 31, 2014 at 12:13 PM

It would be nice if the police focused their resources on protecting law abiding citizens, rather than trying to protect one group of criminals from another. It’s unbelievable what this state and country are turning into.

12 I Fail To See A Problem Here May 31, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Criminals stealing from criminals? Remind me again what the issue here is? This is a simple case of killing two birds with one stone. Eliminate the illegal alien problem and the scammers lose out on their targets.

13 Yaz May 31, 2014 at 12:18 PM

This nation is founded by immigrants. It’s time we accept that there will always be an influx of people from other countries arriving both documented and undocumented. In fact, didn’t Pilgrims arrive her “undocumented”?

Anyhow, licenses for undocumented people are long overdue. I would prefer to know that everyone on the road is licensed and insured and knows the rules of the road. Regardless, of immigration status.

14 Last I checked... May 31, 2014 at 12:20 PM

American citizens needed a birth certificate to get a driver’s license. I wonder if this requirement will be waived for the Unregistered Democrats. And, since we’re now giving them driver’s licenses, maybe it’s time to start requiring ID to vote (since it was deemed unconstitutional before to “discriminate” against illegals who wanted to vote.

15 Ven Xeter May 31, 2014 at 12:55 PM

@ “Cat Wrangler” and “Yaz”, there is a world a difference between a legal immigrant and an illegal alien. Legal immigrants have respected the laws of this country, gone through criminal and health background checks, paid the required fees to process their applications, and patiently waited their turn in line. Illegal aliens have basically said “screw you” to all law abiding citizens and immigrants alike. No background checks, no waiting their turn, no respect for the laws of our land. It is disgraceful we have politicians that allow this lawlessness to go on, and even encourage more of it, simply for their own selfish purposes. And no, I am not anti-immigrant. My wife is an immigrant, my father was an immigrant, and my mother’s parents were immigrants. Each and every one of them arrived here legally.

16 Bark chewer May 31, 2014 at 12:56 PM

I’m just hoping that if your going to give out drivers licenses, let’s make sure they also have to have Insureance!

17 Bark chewer May 31, 2014 at 1:11 PM

@ Cat wrangler. There is and always has been a process to coming to America to become citizen. I think that’s what most folks are asking for. We have become a country that no longer produces much. Thank you EPA! So when you jump a fence, swim a river or ocean, your in. But now, someone has to house, feed, medical and the list goes on and on! I’m not against people coming here for a better life. Just do it the way it was intended.

18 chuckie the troll May 31, 2014 at 1:15 PM

How many illegal aliens read Claycord? BTW- It cost me and my wife thousands of dollars in the 1980′s to get her legal immigrant status (we were already married and by the time she was finally legal we already had a child). At the same time, illegal aliens from Mexico (and all of Latin America?) received amnesty and a green card ahead of us. Shall we talk about unequal rights now or just pretend that there isn’t a double standard to this very day. As George Orwell wrote, “All animals are equal…but some animals are more equal than others.”

19 bumper morgan May 31, 2014 at 1:39 PM

Illegal immigrants…piece should be corrected.

20 Ted K., SuperMax May 31, 2014 at 1:43 PM

It’s ILLEGAL ALIENS or ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

… those persons who entered a sovereign country without proper authorization. That is against federal law.

Illegal aliens are persons who are stealing public resources – taxpayer-funded programs, goods, and services, intended to assist citizens and authorized residents.

21 Cat Wrangler May 31, 2014 at 1:48 PM

If we stepped up and resolved the immigration issue we could offer amnesty to those undocumented here now that want to stay and pay taxes, raise a family and continue to make America the greatest country on Earth with unlimited future potential for individuals, families and businesses who want to succeed.

If we just keep ignoring the issue at hand and pretend that the current laws and their enforcement resolve the problems then we loose tax revenue and let millions of our neighbors stay in poverty and illegal status.
I already have posted several times that I know Latino pastors that say that Latinos are already winning the “War” here in America – one illegal immigrant at a time. In time, the millions of undocumented will eventually achieve critical mass. The political and practical weight of numbers will rule the day in the future even if we as a society will not do the right thing to aid and assist those who are looking for a means to escape poverty, starvation, threat of violence and make a future of hope for their family. Why not get ahead of this thing and influence its most positive nature – create opportunities with citizenship, education and business. America has a long history of opening its heart and door to immigrants and reaped the benefit.

22 Anon May 31, 2014 at 1:58 PM

Aren’t the illegal aliens criminals too?

23 @Cat Wrangler May 31, 2014 at 2:05 PM

Haven’t you noticed, businesses are dying in California. San Jose is officially bankrupt and the other cities are on the way.

24 @Cat Wrangler May 31, 2014 at 2:06 PM

America is being over powered by immigrants which is why we are in the financial state that we are in today.

25 Cat Wrangler May 31, 2014 at 2:08 PM

I appreciate the point of view held by those who prefer the legal process of immigration. America has been well-served by offering certain number of legal permissions to private individuals wishing to immigrate legally and those escaping political and personal persecution. I laud this effort and wish that all immigrants chose this process. But they do not.

What, may I ask, are we as Americans going to do with the growing wave of econumic refugees that have come to our country and those soon to be here? Ignore them? Turn them back? Expel them? Build a physical barrier and defensable space and staff it with military and/or armed guards? Recent news reports state that the greatest number of illegals attempting to enter USA are children. Children who are crossing by themselves. Let’s not mention those who die on their way here in deserts and coyote vans. Are we going to start imprisoning or shooting children now? Are we going to keep spending greater amounts of resources to eject illegal immigrants and keep them out? Are we willing to pay higher taxes to accomplish this?

I believe we should embrace those who want to be here as citizens and taxpayers and offer amnesty. I believe in giving people a chance at a hopeful future. I believe that we should change our approach and look realistically and compassionately at the potential of each individual in the immigration issue. If we don’t decide to do the compassionate thing now it will be decided in the future most probably in a way that most reading here would find disagreeable.

26 war hawk? May 31, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Cat Wrangler, you pose the question, what would one do with the growing wave of economic refugees? Mexico is a third world country, not in Asia or Africa, but inconveniently next door. I do not think we should attack Mexico, but in the context of our foreign policy since WWII, I have to ask, why haven’t we?

Mexico has endemic poverty and corruption, a civil/drug war that is uncontrolled and spilling into our country, and there is an ungoing humanitarian catastrophe on our border as hundreds die each trying to flee the country.

That kind of pedigree usually earns a no-fly zone, a CIA engineered coup, drone strikes, some cluster bombs, or at the very least an economic blockade and some assassinations of key leaders.

The Mexican government has proven it’s self unable to provide for the economic or material safety of it’s people. Is it time for regime change?

27 Anon May 31, 2014 at 3:37 PM

So the fear mongers what you to give up, the some of these posters, and say “there is nothing we can do, we have to give in to the illegal aliens”. Well that isn’t true, here is a simple plan:

1) Stop hiring illegals, do your own lawn care if you can or hire a service that doesn’t employee them
2) Tell your congressional representatives to stop allowing them to stay here, no more free education for their kids, no more free hand outs for them
3) When you see them in public, shun them, ignore them and avoid them. What will likely happen is that the younger illegals/anchor babies, will get brazen and take action. At that point they can be arrested, charged and maybe deported, if the bleeding hearts of the this state would get a clue

Lastly, this state and this country have been made great by diversity, no doubt. But these illegal aliens are the worst of the worst. They are cowards who abandoned their homes rather than address the issues. They are criminals, as already stated, as well as for taking benefits meant for citizens, which as illegal aliens they are not due. They are pedophiles as we see in the news far too often. Of course in their minds, they aren’t as in Mexico they marry children as a matter of culture, something we hear in America find abhorrent. So no illegal aliens do not improve this country, and they are not what made this country great.

28 @# 24 May 31, 2014 at 3:47 PM

“America is being over powered by immigrants which is why we are in the financial state that we are in today”
I wasn’t aware the immigrants were the ones who passed laws on budget matters. Silly me, I thought it was the dumb lawmakers in Congress, who want to cut, cut, cut, until there isn’t any money for us on the lower rungs of the ladder, only for those at the top(I’m sure you’ve heard of the 1%?).
The immigrants pay sales taxes, the same as you and I; they pay social security taxes, the same as you and I; and, they have income tax taken out of their paycheck, the same as you and I. In other words, the immigrants aren’t responsible for “the financial state we’re in today”. For that, look to the conservative Republican members of Congress, who refuse to vote for any increase in funding to improve “the financial state we’re in today”.

29 DoubleTap May 31, 2014 at 3:52 PM

@Cat Wrangler
I love your feel good views but they are distorted in every way. You seem to think they all want to come to America to become Americans and thats far from the truth. Wake up, they are only here for the money that come with the jobs, they in turn erode once good paying jobs by working for lower wages. This does not bother them because the cockroach infested apartment on Detroit Ave is worse than the slums they came from.
They can afford the low pay because of the low rent areas and they inhabit and the fact they pack so many , brother, sister, cousins to a two bedroom apartment making their share of the monthly rent very little.
The rest of their money is sent back to Mexico to their families to help and to be saved so they can buy land in Mexico.
See most don’t care about my home or yours. I worked side by side with them for many years , they dont want to be an American they want American money and that is it.

30 Mark May 31, 2014 at 4:29 PM

Amazing that were going to give illegal undocumented immigrants drivers licenses in the first place. Try and sneak into Mexico or any other country and try to get a drivers license and free services… yea let me know how that works out for ya.

31 Judge Roy Bean May 31, 2014 at 4:37 PM

Wow… somebody is duplicating the same services that the DMV already does.

32 @Double Tap, #29 May 31, 2014 at 4:50 PM

You seem to be laboring under the mistaken impression all immigrants come from Mexico, and that simply isn’t the case. In fact, it appears now the majority are coming from Central America, to escape poverty and violence.
As for living in the “low rent areas”, does $1500-2500/month sound like low to you? And yes, many of them do send money back home, to help their families survive the miserable conditions the immigrants were able to escape. Let me put it to you this way: If you were faced with staying in this country, with no job and no prospects, and no unemployment insurance, wouldn’t YOU be looking at anything you could do to make sure your family survived? Maybe crossing a border illegally, as long as it meant your survival and that of your family?

33 Anon May 31, 2014 at 4:52 PM

@Cat Wrangler

I’ll save you from saying it and thank you for it, “you are a racist”. That is what you want to say because it is the cry of all bleeding heart libtards. Of course illegal aliens are not a race, unless YOU think they are all Mexicans. As well, Mexican is a political distinction not a racial one. Then again bleeding heart libtards don’t have to use logic, it confusing them. Instead they make of the past, misuse the language of the country they claim to love, and all the while want you to believe they mean well. Huh, isn’t the road to hell paved with good intentions?

34 Require thenm to have their children vaccinated May 31, 2014 at 4:54 PM

35 Cat Wrangler May 31, 2014 at 5:18 PM

@Double Tap – I. am pleased that you like my feel good views. I hope you can see that we agree on the pragmatic views, too. I stated that we should offer amnesty to those who wanted to become citizens and taxpayers.

@War Hawk – The war you fight is one of words, thankfully. I do not respect the suggestion to attack a neighbor nation that has sided with us in our response to 9/11. A much more effective method would be to make team members and citizens of those that want to be citizens and taxpayers, assist the true and inspiring leaders with economic incentives for positive policies in Mexico and other Latin countries (not like we helped the Salinas Brothers and other Tin Pot Dictators). It would be nice, of course, to realize that we are no longer an island as afforded the Monroe Doctrine policies and virtually impassable natural barriers of centuries ago. We did sign NAFTA, you know. We are a member of a larger economic geographical power.

And to the others that call for us to disdain immigrants are simply trolls or so full of hate there is no room for decency in their psyche. The measure of one’s character can be made by the way we treat one another. That is what has lasted through all of the Constitutional challenges, economic struggles and cultural changes in America since its inception – that we are a Country that respects, advocates and protects the dignity of the individual and its right for decency in life. You are being so very Un-American if you suggest otherwise.

36 Jerk May 31, 2014 at 5:19 PM

38 Ven Exeter May 31, 2014 at 6:29 PM

@cat wrangler, your twisting of language is very telling of what you are. Nobody in this thread has said anything that would lead one to believe they “disdain immigrants”. What the overwhelming majority of Americans are against is illegal immigration. Those on the far left trying to rip this country apart have gradually managed to change the language from “illegal alien” to “undocumented alien” to ” undocumented immigrant” to “immigrant”. Americans embrace true immigrants who come to this country via legal channels and wait their turn in the process. Only those who wish to see this country brought down welcome criminals who refuse to obey the most basic laws of a country that has welcomed more immigrants than any other on Earth.

39 Tax May 31, 2014 at 7:02 PM

LOL! Our immigration system is broken. There are stacks and stacks of applications which take years and years to process. Someone in desperate poverty is not going to wait a decade plus to “legally” enter our country. I’m not for or against illegal immigration. I simply view matters from a humanistic perspective. Why? Because I care and respect my fellow human beings regardless of what country, how much wealth, or education they may have. For thousand of years, people have migrated from one land region to another. It would be naive to believe that because our civilization has created countries and borders, that human migration is going to cease. I’m
would surmise that the worldly practice of human migration that has existed
for civilizations will continue long after our civilization is gone.

40 Anon May 31, 2014 at 7:28 PM

41 @Ven Exeter, #38-----look up definition of disdain May 31, 2014 at 7:56 PM

There are plenty of comments which disdain immigrants, and your post is one of them.
Disdain: a feeling of strong dislike or disapproval of someone or something you think does not deserve respect

42 Joe Arpaio May 31, 2014 at 8:05 PM

The newer batch of immigrants who are illegal refuse to assimilate to the customs and ideals of this country. No dues were paid. Makes a mockery of our government. I feel some sort of service should be required, as most immigrants have defended this country in the past. Older immigrants were proud and happy to have a shot at a better life, not having an entitled attitude like the illegals. This habit of recreating the same behaviors that ruined their native land is ridiculous, like hordes of locusts that leave ruin in their wake.

Cat Wrangler, I like your way of defending your position – reasoned and non-confrontational. You state, and defend, your position well. Question for you: Let’s say you had a company that hired low wage workers. These jobs will provide money for those workers to raise their standard of living, hopefully lifting them out of the lowest rungs and giving the next generation a chance at a much better life. Would you give the jobs to citizens or non-citizens? I ask because the citizens who are denied these jobs need the money just as badly as the non-citizen, and I never hear enough support for the poorer citizens. What’s your position? Thanks.

56 Veeya June 1, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Sounds like history repeating itself e.a. Irish immigrants, Jewish immigrants, African Americans. This country has always showed its true colors with racism when times are tough.

As far as assimilation goes I don’t know of any culture or race that hasn’t assimilated after a generation or two. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments. You raise some very good questions.

All jobs in USA are open to legal residents and citizens subject only to their qualifications and employer choices. So, why are all of these jobs not filled by citizens and legal residents? Maybe because these jobs pay such low wages that citizens and legal residents do not want them because they enjoy options that pay more, including unemployment benefits.

Private American citizens enter the free marketplace each day as business decision-makers or consumers and pay undocumented immigrants a lower price than they themselves would accept for their services and products.
What amazes me is that the undocumented workers accept it, pay taxes on it and then do not receive the representation in a government to which they pay taxes. Taxation without representation is supposed to be a Cardinal Sin in our Country.

63 The North American Indian June 1, 2014 at 4:05 PM

lost the war. Yet they enjoy a great deal of welfare and other free stuff from the American Government. They also enjoy a great many privileges and rights usually preserved for American Citizens, not enemy combatants and their families.

Illegals from anywhere else in the world are in this country illegally. The US Government is ignoring its own laws. By any legal definition, when entering this country illegally, those people have NO rights or privileges. They are criminals plain and simple and should all be treated as such.

64 Cat Wrangler June 1, 2014 at 4:49 PM

@63 -

Native Americans do not receive “free stuff” from the USA. They are separate nations, recognized by USA as such, and receive payments and allotments per the treaties and agreements signed by USA, partly in exchange for certain of their lands and removal.

65 (insert name here) June 1, 2014 at 5:57 PM

Good point, unemployment benefits create a higher standard of living than a low wage job.

My question went unanswered though. Would you give the jobs to citizens or to non-citizens? I would choose citizens. Would you do the same?

66 Cat Wrangler June 1, 2014 at 8:23 PM

I have always paid much more than the market rate to any person who worked with me as part of a team. I have never paid anyone simple, minimum wage. So, your question as it relates to me is a hypothetical one. In which case, I would hire the legal citizen for an open position.

OMG how stupid can ppl be??? They are here illegally! That means your not welcome. Stop giving our hard earned money to ppl that don’t want to be Americans. Its like all the stupid people with no integrity or Logic are running the show. Makes sense, the last elections were morphed into some sort of high school popularity contest by the media. I trust neither political party. Your a fool if you do. Vote out all incumbents time to vote out both parties for Constitutional principals and start electing Independents . ICE needs to do its JOB. A simple solution is = Bounty programs to round up all illegals and get paid to do it. Pay me 500 an illegal and ill clean up Detroit ave and monument with 4 friends and a makeshift school bus. Just make it profitable to remove illegals, get dog the bounty hunter to make a show or steven segal LOL .
