May 28, 2014 10:00 am · 51 comments

The old Marie Callender’s building at S. California and Mt. Diablo in Walnut Creek will soon have a new tenant.

According to Assistant City Planner Adjelegan Lassey, BBVA Compass Bank will be re-locating to the former Marie Callender’s site.

It’s unknown when they plan to open.

So long, Poor Old Marie, she had great pie.

2 Giuseppe May 28, 2014 at 10:15 AM

Why not an Olive Garden? ;)

3 Cowellian May 28, 2014 at 10:27 AM

This may be the first bank to receive poor reviews for not having pie.

Shrimp Boy is starting up his own seafood restaurant here

5 mutts May 28, 2014 at 10:41 AM

Very disappointing. Never heard of this bank. This was the prettiest building in the whole area.

What’s going into the vacant space at the Sprouts Shopping Center? Is the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf finally coming?

7 Enfield303 May 28, 2014 at 10:42 AM

maybe it can be a food bank.

8 Mr. Pink May 28, 2014 at 10:47 AM

Yea, another bank!!

9 KenInConcord May 28, 2014 at 11:06 AM

What is moving into the new building next to Dick’s sporting goods??

10 tired of taxes May 28, 2014 at 11:24 AM

How about the empty Marie Callenders in Concord? The one by the post office?

11 Jojo Potato May 28, 2014 at 11:25 AM

We don’t need any more things in the Sprouts center. Try turning left onto Geary any time from N. Main and you will know what I mean. Stuck all up at the light on Geary.

12 In the know May 28, 2014 at 11:43 AM

A sign of the times.

No good food around anymore, just money making operations.
Last think we need is another bank. It’s so sad that Marie’s closed down because of lousy management and employee theft.

13 BagsFlyFree May 28, 2014 at 11:53 AM

Stanfords/Crogans… They’re looking at you next!!!

Why another bank? WC is over saturated already!

16 Growling Bear May 28, 2014 at 12:42 PM

Black Bear Diner on Bancroft better watch out. Most of the Employees are from the old Callenders that went under.

17 Leon May 28, 2014 at 12:57 PM

They need a Gamestop or something else for men downtown – Something for us to do while our women buy overpriced clothes.

18 Shiloh May 28, 2014 at 1:05 PM

I’ve been wondering what is going in next to Dick’s, as well.

19 J May 28, 2014 at 1:17 PM

I’ve heard good things about that bank, for whatever that’s worth. I still miss Marie Callender’s, though. Good burgers and good pie.

20 Shopper mom May 28, 2014 at 1:28 PM

According to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s Facebook site they should be moving in next to Sprout’s in 6-8 weeks -yeah!
According to signage, Pieology, a pizza restaurant that also sounds good, is moving in the space next to Dick’s.

21 mika May 28, 2014 at 1:38 PM

DSW shoes is moving in next to Dick’s.

22 Dorothy May 28, 2014 at 1:47 PM

All that for one bank?

23 Krystle May 28, 2014 at 2:10 PM

What are they thinking they need to put a restraunt there

24 Pieology (pizza)moving in next to Dicks May 28, 2014 at 2:19 PM

Saw the sign go up

25 Smart,Goodlooking&Debonaire May 28, 2014 at 2:23 PM

Pizza should generally be avoided. Generally, pizza has too much saturated fat, and people tend to overeat with pizza. It’s best to stick to the salad bar with limited toppings. And be sure to use a low calorie, low sodium dressing.

26 Amanda May 28, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Pieology is going in over by Panda Express, DSW is going in next door to Dick’s.

28 Michelle May 28, 2014 at 3:18 PM

Another pizza place why so many around town? Dick’s is King in sports. I haven’t seen a more complete store yet.

29 concordkiwi May 28, 2014 at 3:39 PM

DSW stock falls 27%

30 Michelle May 28, 2014 at 3:45 PM

now is the time, buy buy buy! One of the largest shoe retailers in the world, and everyone wears shoes.

31 anon May 28, 2014 at 3:49 PM

I could deal with a dsw!

32 mutts May 28, 2014 at 4:03 PM

Thought it was Concord, oops. Still, this has always been a restaurant of some sort, too bad. But, Concord, why aren’t you doing something about getting a good restaurant at our old Marie Calendars? Like beg Bob’s Big Boy to return.

33 fine May 28, 2014 at 4:12 PM

mutts, that is going to be an olive garden.

34 Suzanne May 28, 2014 at 4:15 PM

The debate in the stocks of dsw have been going on since January. I have a feeling they will drop a few more dollars and then pick up again. I may have to pick up a few shares myself.

35 Richard May 28, 2014 at 4:34 PM

Who keeps asking for a Olive Garden? One is too many, way too many great to excellent Italian restaurants in the area.

Especially you LOUIE, especially you

39 sue May 28, 2014 at 6:29 PM

Really miss thair pie and corn bread. Wish it was a nice place to eat going in there. We have enough banks

40 sue May 28, 2014 at 6:30 PM

all Concord has is junk fast food.

41 Anon May 28, 2014 at 6:42 PM

Shortage of good cooks and restaurant help all over.

42 Anon May 28, 2014 at 7:52 PM

The concord location is also under construction I watched crews go in this week.

43 BagsFlyFree May 28, 2014 at 8:55 PM

@ sue.. pull up yelp and discover some gems.. Concord has good eats in every corner of town.

44 BagsFlyFree May 28, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Pieology is the Chipotle of pizza.. Create your own adventure.. Apparently LA can’t get enough of the stuff.

45 bigdaddy May 28, 2014 at 9:35 PM

46 Scooter May 28, 2014 at 10:18 PM

Damn- was hoping Berkeley Farms would make a comeback!

47 tony May 28, 2014 at 11:10 PM

BBVA is a Spanish bank maybe thats why you’ve “never heard of it” Theres already a location on N. Main probably moving here.

48 Lynne May 29, 2014 at 7:30 AM

Another Bank, enough banks,we need another middle road resturant…..miss

49 anon May 29, 2014 at 8:47 AM

I keep hoping for some local dim sum. Used to go to Tin’s Tea House pretty often.

50 57 Chevy May 29, 2014 at 9:28 AM

There are neighborhoods that would really appreciate a new bank, but guess Walnut Creek isn’t one of them.

The number of banks in town will always depend on the demographics.

51 Frambley1 May 29, 2014 at 11:38 AM

@Smart,Goodlooking&Debonaire #25

Low sodium? First of all I find it silly that you would assume you know better about what to eat than anyone else on here. But to suggest there is any reason an average person, a person that doesn’t have high blood pressure, should use low sodium anything is ridiculous. The thought that sodium is bad for you is simply a myth that can go right up there with the myth saying that gluten is bad.
