The Water Cooler – Mexican Food in Claycord

May 21, 2014 12:09 pm · 157 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

What’s your favorite Mexican restaurant in Claycord?

Talk about it!….

1 Miss Ranchogirl May 21, 2014 at 12:12 PM

Claycord is saturated with Mexican restaurants, the only place I go to once in a long while is Tacos Panchos across from Concord Bart.
I am on the look for more exciting places

2 Just Another Paisa May 21, 2014 at 12:12 PM

Los Gallos
La Plaza
Mercado Del Sol

3 I'm The Urban Spaceman May 21, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Mayor, do you mean a sit-down, table cloth establishment? No taqueria’s?

4 Dorothy May 21, 2014 at 12:16 PM

Chipolte! While I don’t really consider it to be real Mexican, it is Mexican similar and I enjoy it more than some of the more authentic Mexican restaurants. When I want authentic Mexican, I go to the New Mecca which is not in the official Claycord area.

5 Triple Canopy May 21, 2014 at 12:21 PM

It’s in Pittstioch/Antiburg…..The Mecca.

6 Concordejet May 21, 2014 at 12:24 PM

Los Tacos De Pancho located at
2699 Clayton Road
Concord, CA 94519
Just few stores down from CVS>big 5 sporting good store> Bakery store and than the Los Tacos De Pancho
The food is delicious, the owner is friendly and the price is right. I like their taco so tasty!!!!!!!!!! Their buritos are excellent too. I cannot fit through the door after eating those delicious food. I had been their regular for 5 years now. The staff members remembers me they say you order same old same old lol

7 Doggie Dad May 21, 2014 at 12:25 PM

La Tapatia on Willow Pass (next to Radio Shack)

Great food and service. Juan Carlos always takes good care of us.

8 Frank May 21, 2014 at 12:34 PM

El Faro, on Monument for me.

9 ANNONeeemoose May 21, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Mexican Burritos on Reganti. They’ve been around FOREVER (used to be in Pleasant Hill) and have the best wet burritos ever.

10 Minutemom May 21, 2014 at 12:39 PM

Los Panchos take-out on CC Blvd (great burritos), just up from Target; Los Gallos on Todos Santos (fantastic chimichangas) and New Mecca in Pittsburg. Mmmmmmmm :)

11 HeckYeah May 21, 2014 at 12:40 PM

El Faro!!!

12 Broke in Colony Park May 21, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Mercado del sol and el faro! El Molino for papusas!

13 Two Cents May 21, 2014 at 12:42 PM

Easy! La Tapatia in Concord on Willow Pass or in Martinez – great menu, quality food, authentic. Used to go to various places, but this place excels.

14 John May 21, 2014 at 12:45 PM

Another vote for La Tapatia on Willow Pass

15 old sage May 21, 2014 at 12:48 PM

Salsa Verde on Detroit hands down

Any roach coach on any corner in little mexico aka most of Concord?

18 critic May 21, 2014 at 12:53 PM

Guadalajara… Good food, great service, and killer frozen margaritas that pack a punch.

19 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 12:54 PM

Los panchos on pacheco blvd
El molino on monument blvd got the tamales for the low

Then we come to Guadalajara grill, use to be good when it was a hole n the wall before they re did the shopping center… Now its hit or miss with ridiculously high prices… I consider it more of a convenience restaurant now.

Outta claycord, bordering cities
las tres marias off w tregallas n antioch.. delicious food, very fair prices, friendly service

New mecca, flour tortilla chips and bean dip!

20 JET May 21, 2014 at 12:59 PM

CHIPOTLE??? Are you kidding me #16? That shouldn’t even be considered real food. You know Chipotle is owned by McDonalds right? That gives you an idea the quality of their food right there.

21 Bob Brittain May 21, 2014 at 12:59 PM

I agree with old sage. Salsa Verde is authentic and family-owned. Seafood stands out!

22 SFGirl May 21, 2014 at 12:59 PM

There is a new place on Farm Bureau Road, between Bambino’s and Diggers (can’t remember the name) that is really good. They have only been open about two weeks, but I’ve been there 3 times and each time was very happy with what I ordered. Chile Verde was very good, and everyone is very friendly. The food tastes very fresh, not like it’s been sitting around for a while.

23 TJ May 21, 2014 at 1:00 PM

New Mecca in Pittsburg – none better than that! We use them to cater all of our family events, so good!

24 Silva May 21, 2014 at 1:01 PM

I’m going to say The New Mecca, though I haven’t been for a very long time. The place on Clayton Road that origionally was the Taco Bell, adjacent to the MacDonald’s parking lot is nice and convenient.

25 Danielle May 21, 2014 at 1:02 PM

I miss CC Oles (when it first opened that is, after about 2 yrs it was disgusting but it started out really good back in the day!). Remember the salsa bar in the bar area? Mmm

26 Fred May 21, 2014 at 1:03 PM

When I visit we go to Guadlajara in the Clayton Valley Shopping Center. Most of my family doesn’t like Mexican that much, but I do and it’s close.

27 Disgusting May 21, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Guadalajara is wretched.
No individual taste to the ingredients. Might as well all come from the same pot (or can).
I used to wonder why it looks crowded on some nights, but realized I see crowds in McDonalds too. You can’t account for personal taste …or lack thereof.

La Tapatia near Frys , Los Gallos …go to spots

28 Anon May 21, 2014 at 1:11 PM

We use to call it El Farto

Chipolite’s is not Mexican food just like Taco Bell

29 Elwood May 21, 2014 at 1:13 PM

Claycord: El Tapatio Pleasant Hill

Outlying areas: New Mecca, of course

30 70's Style Bush May 21, 2014 at 1:13 PM

La Mordida on Gregory Lane in Pleasant Hill

31 Burritos aren't "Mexican", they're TexMex May 21, 2014 at 1:14 PM

After having a really great chili relleno in Stockton the other day, I’m beginning a search for really good, house-made chilis rellenos in this area. Mostly all sold here are not made in-house, but are factory made and brought in, and all are stuffed only with cheese. Any suggestions where to get a good chili relleno?
And for those who dare to be different, try the huevos rancheros at Tacos de Pancho; really good sauce over the top.

32 Anon777 May 21, 2014 at 1:14 PM

Absolute fav is Los Panchos (take out only Pacheco)
El Tapatio (Treat/Clayton)
El Faro

Last time at the Mecca was HORRIBLE SERVICE. We had to ask who our waitress was just to order. We had to ask for her several more times as she stayed in the back and never came back to our table without us asking someone to get her. She got my order wrong and I had to ask twice for her to bring the correct item. We had to ask for more drinks and we even had to ask for the check. Never in my life have I not tipped in a restaurant, but I wouldn’t even leave her a penny, we were so disgusted.

33 ClayDen May 21, 2014 at 1:17 PM

El Charro and Maria Maria.

34 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 1:20 PM

@ #27 I feel it
plus there prices, $12.00 for two enchiladas rice n beans… you know how cheap tortillas, pintos, and arroz are?!?

35 claycordian May 21, 2014 at 1:23 PM

We like El Charro in Lafayette

36 El Tigre del Norte May 21, 2014 at 1:24 PM

La Soledad behind Park N Shop stands out as being the most consistent in its taste.

37 Concord resident May 21, 2014 at 1:26 PM

Los panchos and Los Gallos in downtown Concord. I’m Mexican and these two restaurants are definitely traditional in taste. ..all others….not good enough for me.

38 Two Cents May 21, 2014 at 1:26 PM

I agree about Guadalajara being a disappointment. Too bad, would be nice to have a good mex sit down place there. I heard that La Tapatia was eyeing that center for another restaurant years back, but Guadalajara had a lock on the location. Oh, well.

39 tam May 21, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Cindo De Mayo in Martinez

40 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 1:28 PM

Since we’re on the subject of mexican, latin food, and popeyes opening up on claycord rd… Pollo Campero, best fried chicken I’ve ever had. It’s a chain, lots available in southern California but they recently added one in san Francisco’s mission district

41 iscoffy May 21, 2014 at 1:38 PM

El Aguila in Pleasant Hill. It’s not the cheapest, but the food is fresh and very, very tasty.

42 No BS May 21, 2014 at 1:42 PM

La Pinata

43 Pyrrhus May 21, 2014 at 1:47 PM

I’ve had burrito’s all over the bay area and my favorite is on 24th and Mission, El Farolito. Concord taquerias are okay, If I need a fix in Contra Costa County I’m going to La Costa in Brentwood (I feel the Oakley establishment has gone downhill in quality since the remodel)

44 Marianne May 21, 2014 at 1:50 PM

El Tapitos! :-) No doubt!

45 @Anon,l #28-----Chipotle no longer owned by McDonald's May 21, 2014 at 1:56 PM

They sold it off several years ago, and now it is a separate company, listed as CMG on the New York Stock Exchange, currently selling at $504+ per share.

46 Vandy May 21, 2014 at 1:57 PM

I am with SFGirl, that new place between Diggers and Bambinos on Farm Bureau is very good. Its called “Taqueria Classica” and I enjoyed their crispy Carnitas in a burrito. Super cheap and super good.

47 Jmor May 21, 2014 at 2:11 PM

It’s between Los Panchos in Pacheco and Los Gallos Tacqueria in PH or Concord. They have the best carnitas. I go where the carnitas are… :)

48 Don't overlook La Tapatia in Martinez May 21, 2014 at 2:12 PM

Used to be Margarita’s, but was sold to La Tapatia a few years back. Food’s good, drinks good, good service; but a little out of the way for Claycord folks.

49 Fumunda May 21, 2014 at 2:17 PM

-The Mecca
-El Farto on monument is good , all meat burrito and some colon bowling .
A few coronas and a siesta .
– El Camino in Brentwood has got a great breakfast , # 27

50 Clayton Squirrel May 21, 2014 at 2:18 PM

My daughter will only eat at Guadalajara Grill. She wants their chips at her wedding. Not Mexican food at her wedding, just the chips…

We have a few years to work on this.

51 I phone or die May 21, 2014 at 2:40 PM

I can believe nobody has said LA COSTA!!!!! Handma down best mexican food around & if u didn’t know u do now!!! Look em up ther in oakley

52 Subterfuge May 21, 2014 at 2:42 PM

Taco Bell

53 bored@work May 21, 2014 at 2:46 PM

Los Gallos by Todos Santos or Tortilleria El Molino on Monument. These two are the best around. I’ve tried the Los Gallos on Contra Costa and it’s nowhere near the quality of the one by the park.

54 Best Mexican is...... May 21, 2014 at 2:46 PM

Los Tacos de Panchos in the Concord area. They’re an excellent taqueria.

La Primavera in the Martinez area. It’s a sit down restaurant. They have some of the best mexican food, service and prices.

55 JET May 21, 2014 at 2:49 PM

Has anyone tried Memos’ ?
It is in Concord off of Pacheco street near conconrd Bart. It is housed in an old house where the mayor of Concord once lived and is run by a father and daughter. Daughter makes all the delecious desserts.
Don’t forget to try it out. NO LARD.

61 biggus thinkus May 21, 2014 at 3:13 PM

El Molino tortilla factory
look it up
go there
get the carnitas
(and their pupusa’s are pretty skippy too)
best horchata EVER

62 57 Chevy May 21, 2014 at 3:17 PM

Probably The Mecca. Getting kind of hungry just thinking about it.

63 Aspirin May 21, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Eat Mexican where Mexicans eat.

64 Aspirin May 21, 2014 at 3:40 PM

A small Mexican restaurant on Clayton Road next to McDonald’s (I don’t remember the name but I remember the food) has some of the best Mexican in the area. Many Latinos eat there.

65 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 3:41 PM

#60 my homie was workin at memos for a short, got caught red handed drinkin their tequilla out the bottle on his shift by the manager, hilarious

66 Aspirin May 21, 2014 at 3:42 PM

Guadalajara Grill chips and salsa are great. The rest of the food I’m not crazy about.

67 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 3:42 PM

El charro is helllllla good, I use to work there, they fired me for no reason, so later n life I went back and left them a upper decker… true story!

68 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 3:43 PM

I like maria maria better when it was the cantina =)

69 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 3:46 PM

Anyone miss chevys in p hill or el torito where lazy dogs now is?

70 Aspirin May 21, 2014 at 3:48 PM

The Cinco de Mayo Mexican Grill on Clayton Road has a great molle sauce. Many Latinos eat there.

71 Michelle May 21, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Chevys has ok food, love the margaritas! :-) El torito’s is the bomb!

72 fiesta May 21, 2014 at 4:02 PM

The one by bart, the one in Pacheco is sub par.

73 Jules May 21, 2014 at 4:11 PM

Los Panchos gets my vote. Mecca has GONE WAAAAY DOWN and prices up. No one is paying attention – this is just a travesty. That said, Guadalajara is atrocious!

74 Suzanne May 21, 2014 at 4:15 PM

I like the Guadalahara Grill, in fact, going there this weekend. The service can be much better, but the sauces are excellent!

75 ConcordGloryDays May 21, 2014 at 4:20 PM

el pollo loco is the best of the peasant mex food

76 NRA #1 fan and member May 21, 2014 at 4:24 PM

79 Kelley May 21, 2014 at 4:40 PM

86 Julio May 21, 2014 at 5:15 PM

I cannot believe some of you folks are still eating in that filthy New Mecca in Pittsburg. It has been gross my whole life and I’m in my 70’s. Cockroaches and all.

87 @Aspirin, #63------Eat where Mexicans eat? May 21, 2014 at 5:17 PM

Does that mean McDonald’s has good food, because Americans eat there? I think your reasoning is flawed. Good food is frequently found in small, out-of-the-way places, until its discovered by the masses, then many times the quality declines because the quantities being served have increased.

88 Mom of the Horde May 21, 2014 at 5:34 PM

El Molino and Taqueria La Plaza (in Sutter Plaza off of Willow Pass) are my current favorites.

I still maintain that there is no truly good Mexican food in Walnut Creek.

89 Mark May 21, 2014 at 5:44 PM

I heard from a friend once that he was listening to a radio program about restaurants in California. El Charro in Lafayette was named worst Mexican food in California. I ate there three times before I gave up on it (before I heard his story). Food was sub-par all three times. I liked their bar though, and they had some sort of garlic butter dip stuff with the chips that was pretty good.

90 07hd May 21, 2014 at 5:46 PM

Guadalajara is great! $12 encaladads yep! They pay rent in Clayton if you can’t afford $12 for a sit down restraunt go to safeway and make your own food you can’t afford to eat out. Order the chimichanga’s you won’t be disappointed.

91 yoshi May 21, 2014 at 5:47 PM

I love El Molino in monumet blvd. or Tacos De Panchos in downtown concord across from Bart. I go to Panchos weekly and always have great fast service, friendly staff and best burritos in town. i love these places.

92 Horse n around May 21, 2014 at 6:06 PM

I was disappointed with Los Tacos De Panchos. I’ve tried it twice. Both times they got my orders wrong. My husband loves them. Oh well. I guess it’s true that you can’t please everybody.

93 8066 May 21, 2014 at 6:10 PM

There is a popular misconception that Chipotle restaurants are owned by McDonalds. While they were once an investor in our company, they divested in 2006 and our company went public on the New York Stock Exchange that year.
Source: Chipotle

94 Polli May 21, 2014 at 6:10 PM

Consistently good Mexican food is really hard to find in this area. I vote for the always decent EL JARRO in Lafayette. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH EL CHARRO the health hazard on the other side of town. I went to El Charro a few months ago (love the jail bars on the window as a representation of the criminals who work there, charging for items that I did not order then writing in a larger tip than I actually left). The drinks were passable (but awfully bitter like drinking stinging gasoline if you ask me) and the next time i ordered the exact same thing they tasted like weak toilet water. All depends on the mood swing of the bartenders. Their beef fajitas are unsuitable by any standard, as are the rats I saw upon leaving the back patio and walking through the bar. The infestation appears to be in the bar area but I’m sure rodents must also make their way to the kitchen. When I told the management they said “We’ve been here since 1947.” Yes, but have you cleaned during the last century? Have you been serving old food from that era? Do you even care about the health of your community? In this case, family run means lazy.

95 DoubleTap May 21, 2014 at 6:28 PM

For street tacos I like the place on clayton rd a crossed the street from Ages retirement home, and only a $1.60 a taco. For a burrito all take El Faro or Los Gallos , But for carnitas I Like the Salsa Grill.

96 Michelle May 21, 2014 at 6:30 PM

I thought Mybich was responding…

97 @07hd May 21, 2014 at 6:32 PM

they also pay rent to Seeno.

98 judaspriest May 21, 2014 at 6:39 PM

la mordida killer totally killer best around unless you go all the way tonon claycord fremont la casita

99 J Rodriquez May 21, 2014 at 6:43 PM

There is a shortage of good Mexican places. One place to avoid…. is El Charro in Lafayette. There is a bald hyena in the bar that ruins my family”s experience every time, He likes to drink heavily and smoke pot around the corner, then weave home drunk!. The management is incompetent and might be sued someday.

100 Just the facts May 21, 2014 at 6:44 PM

@20 McDonalds never owned Chipotle. They were investors back in 2005 or so.

101 DoubleTap May 21, 2014 at 6:49 PM

I have to disagree, I was really hoping for a good taco shop close to home, but I found It to be disappointing. $3.00 a taco is a little steep, and beans and rice dont belong on a taco. So I got a giant chicken burrito with a coke in the bottle that cost me $10.00 Im alright with the cost but there was only chicken, beans and rice. No pico de gallo . They dont have a salsa and chip bar, and dont give you any chips with your order. That said the food was fresh but plain and over prices IMHO , Its to bad I wont be back.

102 I'm a Mexican May 21, 2014 at 6:49 PM

I have to come to Guad’s defense! I’ve been going to Guadalajara Grill since 1995! Their food IS good! I think that some of these people have been ordering the wrong dishes. Their cheese enchiladas, and their chicken chimichangas are GREAT! It’s a lot about the atmosphere too! The waiters are super friendly, and always polite! As far as some of the comments about the price, it’s a restaurant in Clayton! They’re not unreasonably priced! If you haven’t been there you really should try it!
“Hot plate! Hot plate!”

103 The Drunken Hungry Stranger May 21, 2014 at 7:05 PM

Could we get something other than Mexican food around here, seriously! I love,a good burrito as much as the next guy but that is all we have here anymore! Every place that closes down(Mr.Pickwicks, Bourbon street, soon to be mexican I’m sure, Time Out, the place on Clayton that was 5 different coffee shops in the last 8 years, all of them Mexican food places!! Enough already!!

104 Cowellian May 21, 2014 at 7:18 PM

We always enjoyed going to El Tapitio on Treat. But for takeout, it had to be Casa Gourmet Burrito in the Clayton Station shopping center!

105 Move on May 21, 2014 at 7:35 PM

What happen to El Torito’s ?

106 07hd May 21, 2014 at 7:36 PM

@97 care to expand on your comment?

107 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 7:58 PM

All you Guadalajara workers defending the restaurant, it’s a concord address homie, not clayton! Don’t get it twisted.. didnt ya bar get shut down?!? Lol why that not make claycord… @ the 1 about 12$ enchis, make my own?.. look up thru posts, I said a convenience restaurant, kinda like ordering out, you must love the skipolinis remodel, bringing u a lil more business lmao!

108 She Got Cake! May 21, 2014 at 8:02 PM

#102 hot plate hot plate… lol yessir, thats when they were good… u remmeber old school guadies next to china village… u remember when it was one room, got so popular they knocked down the wall

109 Munch May 21, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Tortilleria El Molino has a Chille Relleno special on Fridays only. Eat in or take out, it’s the best around.

110 Suzie May 21, 2014 at 8:25 PM

El Toritos, yes, that is all there is to say.

111 QBNSPOT May 21, 2014 at 8:30 PM

El Tapatio on Clayton rd. Best margaritas ever especially the Pink Cadillac. Guadalajara sucks! Really are no great Mexican restaurants around.

112 Big Al May 21, 2014 at 8:51 PM

My wife cooks the best mex. Stay home and save a peso. cinco de mayo in mrtz gets my vote.

113 Suzie May 21, 2014 at 8:57 PM

God I’m starved, I’m going for a burrito.

114 Cuzzzzzzz...... May 21, 2014 at 9:03 PM

La Primavara in Martinez…Small dinner at the “S” curve where Pacheco becomes Court St……Best cheese enchiladas in red sauce…even better thant the ones my ex MIL made……………and that is quite an accomplishment.

115 (insert name here) May 21, 2014 at 9:31 PM

Taco Bell is about as authentic as any “Mexican” restaurant in Concord. FYI, burritos don’t exist in Mexico. It would be nice to have authentic Mexican cuisine here though. I’d die for some authentic African food too. But no, Concord City Council just wants chain restaurants. YEA! Predictable money!

116 07hd May 21, 2014 at 9:33 PM

@97: That’s bs! Regency Centers is not owned by Seeno! That’s a lame attempt to connect the two.

117 ConcordGloryDays May 21, 2014 at 9:40 PM

why is food from impoverished countries so good?
thank goodness for impoverished countries.

118 (insert name here) May 21, 2014 at 10:04 PM

As long as the food quality standards meet every other city in America the Concord City Council says we’re fine. That’s attaining the minimum standard. YEA! Concord has achieved the minimum! More chain restaurants for all!

119 Hands down AUTHENTIC!!! May 21, 2014 at 10:11 PM

‘Dulce Antojitos’ in Bay Point next to the Safeway on Bailey Road. This place is good, has lots of traditional items, is really affordable and the portions are extremely generous! Must try!!! My kids beg me to drive from Martinez to eat there. It’s that good!

Los Panchos in Danville (same Los Panchos as Pacheco) but they have a sit down, full bar & big screen TV restaurant in Danville with great food & service to match. We need one in Clayton.

There is some merit to that…

LA PRIMAVERA !!!!!!!!!!!! in Martinez. The best mexican food ever!!!!!!!!!!

129 Don in Concord May 22, 2014 at 5:59 AM

I really like the newly opened Taqueria Classica at Willow Pass & Farm Bureau. Excellent authentic food.

130 Concord Res. May 22, 2014 at 6:25 AM

Los Gallos at Todo Santos Park downtown Concord is the best! Los Ponchos across from good! I found a bug and a hair in my burrito.. gross…..,

131 bigdaddy May 22, 2014 at 7:03 AM

los gallos on clayton rd….
great service, great food…..
and they always have a soccor game on.

Guadalajara Grill’s food is the BEST!!!!! You people are crazy if you are saying it isn’t!

133 @#60 May 22, 2014 at 7:50 AM

Memo’s in Concord closed late December 2013. They re-located to Rio Vista. Agreed that it was a really good Mexican food dining spot. La Pinata now takes over as numero uno.

134 mamatosix May 22, 2014 at 8:26 AM

The taco truck on Pacheco at Ace Truck Box!!! Their chicken tacos and quesadillas are the bomb. If you go try their chips with beans, cheese and salsa. YUMMY!!!

135 Lori May 22, 2014 at 9:15 AM

Used to be Los Ponchos for me until I went to Cinco De Mayo in Martinez.

136 scooter May 22, 2014 at 9:30 AM

Have been eating at El Charro in Lafayette for more than 20 years, an whoever was saying negative things has some ulterior motive- place is great, food is great. I agree with many here that Guadalajara Grill USED to be really good- but not anymore…their food is bland and prices are high. If you ever want a good laugh, order the “taco salad’…its very expensive and horrible.

137 janie May 22, 2014 at 10:21 AM

LaPlaza in concord hands down. only two people know what is really good in this group. Authentic, all made fresh daily. You don’t know Mexican food until you had a meal there.

138 skrab May 22, 2014 at 10:46 AM

I like Los Montanas at the Park and Shop. I want to try Salsa Verde, but the hours are a little difficult. I like La Primavera in Martinez. Let’s not forget about El Aguila. I don’t order chimichangas, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, etc. I am way more into the traditional items like the caldos, tacos (w/out rice), breakfasts, and plates.

139 anon May 22, 2014 at 10:58 AM

when you do these could you request to have the favorite meals added. That is very helpful. When I go to a new place I usually ask ‘what is popular’. Since I have a knack for always ordering the wrong thing.

MARIA’S! Used to be at 4 corners. Then moved near Bart, before she passed away. That food was awesome!

142 Jack May 22, 2014 at 11:55 AM

Yes, there are many Mexican restaurants in Contra Costa County, however, there are none that compare to the restaurants in So. Cal (and I’m not a So. Cal fan, I love my Bay Area), but having lived there for many years, I can tell you nothing compares!

Trust me when I say, I have tried them all in this area, in a desperate attempt to find a good place for Mexican food (aside from my home). Being Mexican and loving to cook and eat Mexican food, the only two places I will eat at are La Tapatia (Willow Pass) and El Molino, both in Concord. El Molino is a little whole in the wall, but its as close to home cooking as you can get in this area. Their carnitas are spectacular, and you can’t beat their home made tortillas, chips, and salsa. La Tapatia’s food is pretty good and when we cater in our office I always order from either La Tap or El Molino. People love it, but more importantly, I do!

I cannot stand the food at Guadalajara Grill, it is a joke to call it “Mexican” food, it is so Americanized (including the hefty price for what you get)! Their salsa is out of a jar, the chips are from Costco, and when I asked them for a ‘spicier’ salsa, they brought me over a bottle of Tabasco sauce! Really!!!! Trust me when I say, they don’t eat that at home! Oh and their Margaritas are premade slushies!

We recently tried New Mecca ‘again’ to see if it’s gotten any better, but much to my disappointment, it hasn’t so I will not be going back. Not to mentioned the service sucked! Maria Maria has great salsa, chips, drinks, and that’s pretty much it. The food is just ok. I don’t mind going there and having their appetizers and enchiladas, but that’s pretty much it.

143 None of them. May 22, 2014 at 1:09 PM

All the mexican restaurants in this area give me the cramps and a loose stomach. And cause me to repaint the toilet seat.

144 @None of them, #143-----If you have to repaint the toilet seat, May 22, 2014 at 4:42 PM

it ain’t your stomach that’s loose.

145 jw May 22, 2014 at 6:15 PM

La Tapatia

146 anon May 22, 2014 at 9:39 PM

I just tried Taco Panchos across from Concord Bart.
It was my first visit and i just missed another claycordian that stopped in for the first time too.
I will definitely go back. Salsa; mild and med. were very good. i cant do hot. it’s all about the salsa. if you cant get that right its over. I got a wet burrito with the steak. The meat had good flavor the salsa verde was tasty. The service was very good. The girl was friendly and attentive. I like el faro but when i go in i get the feeling the women are either angry or they don’t like gringas. Oh and the center has a security guard that was very visible, not one of those clumpy goobers busy taking naps.

147 anon May 22, 2014 at 9:42 PM

el charro, what plates are good. i’ve got burritos there but was never impressed by anything.
La Plaza, where is that?

148 Concord Guy May 22, 2014 at 11:11 PM

I’m a Gringo who loves my Mexican food. Here’s my bad and my two good:

I live just three blocks from Guadalajara Grill. It sucks. Pedestrian food…nothing remarkable. Service and quality plummeted when they moved to their new quarters. The only Mexican food place where my food is almost always served tepid.

Best in the area, bar none, is Los Tacos de Pancho on Clayton Road. Quality of contents, cooking, service. Simply the best.

Runner up: Cinco de Mayo on Clayton Rd and Kirker Pass Rd. Mole is fabulous. Overall quality good.

149 lexicon May 22, 2014 at 11:44 PM

I like El Charro in Lafayette, especially the Chile Verde. We had great food the other day at La Tapatia on Willow Pass in Concord. (My wife made great burritos this week too).

150 Jesse May 23, 2014 at 7:29 AM

Taqueria El Farolito, in Todos Santos Plaza.

I try new Mexican restaurants all the time, and always finding myself coming back to Farolito. Tiny little hole in the wall joint, but has some killer super burritos/quesadillas. In 10 years of going there, I’ve really only eaten those two items.

151 I'm The Urban Spaceman May 23, 2014 at 2:00 PM

El Farolito also has a killer Avocado Salsa.

152 Eightplant May 23, 2014 at 3:34 PM

1.Salsa Verde on Detroit!
2.Tacos Panchos, tri-tip burrito.
3.Cinco de Mayo, crispy tacos like Jack in the box.

153 Cowellian May 23, 2014 at 3:47 PM

OK, here’s the deal: We will trade you one Cracker Barrel restaurant, which you are in desperate need of, for one decent Mexican Restaurant, which Nashville is in desperate need of. (Crab enchiladas are a must!)

154 DuckyManda May 23, 2014 at 7:01 PM

Didn’t read the entire group of responses, but la salsa in walnut creek is pretty darn good. In claycord la tapatia!

155 Teddy May 23, 2014 at 10:18 PM

1. Salsa Verde on Detroit. Good, good stuff
2. Los Gallos in Todos Santos Park. It’s just better than the one on Clayton Road.

156 Wannabe Mexican May 24, 2014 at 12:40 PM

I LOVE me some Mexican food! La Piñata has delicious seafood dishes – the Camerones en Crema de Tequila is to die for – I also love that their tequila well isn’t deep – their house margaritas aren’t made of jet fuel……the Blackberry Tequila Mojitos are ah-mazing!

Cinco De Mayo on Clayton Rd. has a killer chicken Mole plate for under $10.

I’m with most of the crowd on El Charro & Guadalajara Grill – a lot like El Torrito – edible but “meh”.

Anyone know of a good Taqueria in Claycord for fish Tacos? I love Rubio’s but would love to find something more authentic……

157 iamerica89 May 27, 2014 at 2:39 PM

COCINA MEDINA in Antioch corner of Lone Tree and Hillcrest. They are always fresh and the service is always great! The owner used to cook at the old Guadalajara in Clayton when it was a hole in the wall. (when their food was good) Cocina Medina is worth the drive, and the prices are very fair.
