Just sayin April 18, 2014 - 8:43 AM - 8:43 AM

Concord needs to invest in a shot spotter system, that way the police and paramedics could get to these things quicker.

cuzzzzzzzz................ April 18, 2014 - 8:47 AM - 8:47 AM

I’m thinking this is a gang shooting too. Perhaps retaliation for the shooting @ the 7-11 on Port Chicago on Wednesday??????

For those that want to blame the Police Chief and CPD for whatever remember it’s is not our Police Chief that is the problem it is the City Council. The Chief works at the whim/discretion of the Council. 4 out of 5 council members live in la-la land where everything is peach keen with kittens and butterflies in Concord. They only surface for happy social events and photo ops. Try telling them at meetings about the problems/issues in Concord and they act like you are crazy as Concord is like Disneyland , “The Happiest Place on Earthy” Most have not been in the Monument area in years (except maybe to go to Costco) and have zero intention of stepping foot in such an area as it might burst their delusional bubble. One is busy trying to be Mr Likable, another is working on getting Mitchoffs BOS seat in the future, to the point of party jumping and playing nicey nice with the CLC, one is too old and lives in “Concord Past” and one has been on the council too damn long. This is the Council that want to have a massive development with more low income housing out at the CNWS but didn’t want to even entertain the thought of green business developing the land which would have brought good paying jobs and good quility people to Concord. This is the same Council that got excite over the ground breaking for a Popeye’s Chicken which brings in crappy paying jobs. Edi is the exception. He is out in the community whether or not there is a photo op and actually “works” for the community. He actually walks thru the Monument area, knows the people, talks to the people and is trying to do something to improve the quality of life in the area. But he can’t do it alone and get very little, if any support from the rest of the council

Whatever the problem is the damn city needs to come with a solution asap as it will only get worse and more people with needlessly die. 2 shootings in 2 nights is not good. What next??? Retaliation for retaliation?? Where does it stop????? HOw many more have to die???? This does not just vanish on its own it takes a plan of action by our leaders. So city leaders start freakin leading!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old Guy April 18, 2014 - 9:23 AM - 9:23 AM

have to agree with cuzzzz . . . The City Council and City Manager are the ultimate authority and give direction to the Police Department. I have had some interaction with some of the council members and they have been less than responsive to my concerns. Concord is rapidly becoming a city of gangs, homeless, speeders and red light runners, and no one wants to address the issues! . These shootings will continue because that is the mentality of those involved . . . and they get away with it.

Concord Resident April 18, 2014 - 9:46 AM - 9:46 AM

@cuzzzzzzzzzzz…..(aka Edi)- While Edi is not the answer, I believe voicing your concerns to the City Council and Chief of Police on what is happening in the community is very important.

Gangs seem to have been quiet for a few months but things have changed and they have changed in an alarming manner. The police department is an extremely talented department but it needs to stay on top of things and adapt to changing climates BEFORE it gets to this point. I have faith in the PD that it will redeploy the appropriate resources to keep the tweakers, burglars and gang bangers on their toes and let them know this WILL NOT be tolerated in OUR city!

LMS April 18, 2014 - 9:55 AM - 9:55 AM

Agreed witnothat cuzzzz said. Sad but true. We moved out of the bay area last year after living in Concord for many years. The last straw was finding that someone had defecated not once but twice on the side of our house right outside our then newborn sons window. I’m sure it was probably some meth head but not what I want around my family.

WTF? April 18, 2014 - 10:06 AM - 10:06 AM

@Just sayin – a shotspotter system? Are you kidding? How about start clearing out the d-bags instead? Good grief people already CALL IN when they hear a car backfire I dont think the cops need any additional notification especially for the COST of that system.

2 muders in 2.5 years OMG April 18, 2014 - 10:20 AM - 10:20 AM

Sometimes I feel like I’m in Oakland or Richmond or Chicago when I read of all these murders happening. It’s out of control you guys.

This is why we need to ban guns, there are too many people willing to break laws- so please let’s make a law so they can’t have guns!

Lizzie April 18, 2014 - 10:24 AM - 10:24 AM

For those of us who are religious today is Good Friday. I am not into that much anymore but being raised a Catholic it is ingrained in me. I can’t imagine what the victim’s family is going through…Godspeed to the victim. May the citizens of Concord stay safe.

WTF 2 April 18, 2014 - 10:31 AM - 10:31 AM

Yeah, we don’t need shotspotter, for crying out sideways, this ain’t Oakland. I work in Oakland every day (live in Concord) and I can tell you that all you people comparing Concord to Oakland clearly don’t come down here often. Concord is actually a fairly large city (roughly 120,000 residents). You’re going to have a murder or two every year. This is only the second in 3 years. It’s actually really good for a city of this size located within one of the countries largest metropolitan areas. Compare to Oakland (pop. 390,000), which has had 27 murders this year. So that’s 7 murders per 100K people, versus 0.8 murders per 100K in Concord. We got it pretty good.

cuzzzzzzzz................ April 18, 2014 - 10:50 AM - 10:50 AM

Concord Resident – I am not Edi, I just feel he is the only easily accessable council member and actually live in the Monument area. I have been to the City Council @ least 30 times in the past 4 years and more than half of the times I have voiced my concerns over what is going on in Concord……..And other than Edi I have gotten no repsonse or the some whiny answer from the city council. Oh yeah there was the time I got a pat on the head from Helen Allen. I speak to the Chief frequently. Cheif Swanger is a fantastic person and I think Concord is very very lucky to have him. I also understand that he answers to the council and must do as they wish with the context of the law. I have even volunteered for committees, partook in the Citizens Police Acadmey (which is very good and more people should attend) etc………..Do you ever attend council meetings??? Have you ever signed up for the Citizens Academy????

What you and so many don’t get is that the Police Chief/department can only do what the council instructs within the law. If the council says “oh no can’t do that as it will upset the blah blah enthic group” well then they can’t do it. We need more officers on the streets and they are getting some but how long will they stay unless the funding is found to stay competative?? Yes the Monument could easily us 10-15 officers 24/7/365 but that would leave the rest of the city with out adequate police protection. The CPD is doing the best it can considering it works for a council that is in denial as to what is really going on beyond their own neighborhoods. They will tell you time and time again that Concord does not have a gang problems/issue. And sadly these are the people directing the Chief and his dept.

DWM April 18, 2014 - 10:52 AM - 10:52 AM

I know I’ve read of at least 4 separate articles on this site talking about people being shot in the last 3 or 4 months. Maybe the gangbangers in Oakland just have better aim?

Mike Hammer April 18, 2014 - 11:03 AM - 11:03 AM

@Cuzzzzzzz……

While I agree with a lot of what you are saying, Edi should be lumped in there with the rest. Here is a direct quote from him less than a week ago taken from an article I read from the CCTimes.

“We’ve got to get the word out about gangs because it keeps showing up,” Councilman Edi Birsan said. “It’s the biggest fear factor people have and it just doesn’t exist here in Concord.”

Tells me not only is his head in the clouds but does this guy even live here. In my area the walls of the street are covered in gang graffiti and I see gang looking kids hanging out on the street all the time. But thankfully we have a city council that tells me ‘It just doesn’t exist here in Concord’. Geesh get a clue people.

Lin April 18, 2014 - 11:13 AM - 11:13 AM

I agree with cuzz…We are starting a Neighborhood watch in our area. We live by Markham Nature Park and we are having Drug deals going down daily. We are all being pro active instead of reactive to this and are going to take back our neighborhood, I have contacted the City Council and Parks Dept about our concerns, How can they have Summer Children’s programs in a park where all these drug dealers and drug buyers hang out. WE ARE NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cuzzzzzzzz................ April 18, 2014 - 11:40 AM - 11:40 AM

Mike Hammer – I know for a fact that Edi lives off Oak Grove between Monument & David…………and he does walk the city a lot.
But I am hoping that maybe, just MAYBE now the folks running this city will wake up and realize what the CPD knows but doesn’t talk about (for obvious reasons like undercover etc) that Concord has gangs, they are growing and the issue is getting worse. Heck the Sureno’s are so brazen they have videos on YouTube bragging about their guns, drugs, money etc………..and one of the vidoes was shot at Meadow Homes Park. Hello Mayor Grayson and Council…….Watch the video and tells how gangs are not a problem/issue in Concord

Are you effing kidding me April 18, 2014 - 11:58 AM - 11:58 AM

2 murders in 2.5 years, kill yourself. You are a effing waste of flesh.

Noj April 18, 2014 - 1:17 PM - 1:17 PM

Monument is the new Little Tijuana, and all with the city’s blessing. Susan Bonilla marched at the head of the Mexican parade in Todos Santos park and you’re surprised?

Memo from the Chief April 18, 2014 - 2:22 PM - 2:22 PM

I would like to reinterate that certain four letter words are not acceptable. Most of you know what they are, and I hear them occasionally around the locker room. The City Council and I agree that there is one four letter word we are hearing all too often . It is G**g.. There is no such thing in Concord. You may use “Ethnically allied organizations of challenged young men”. Thats OK ,but never , ever, use the four letter word G**g.

We dont have G**g bangers here is Concord, never have, never will.

Thank you,

The Chief.

No Offense.... April 18, 2014 - 2:25 PM - 2:25 PM

but Concord has always been a pretty nasty place worth staying away from. I lived in many different areas of Concord throughout my life. Sh*t was always going down. I had a guy hiding under my balcony years back with a MAC 10 shooting at the cops who were returning fire. He had just shot someone in the face waiting at the drive thru. Meadow Lane, Detroit Ave, Monument, Grant Solano….. you name it. Concord is dangerous. Would never own there and never even think of going into it unless I have to. Its Sad but the reality is people are crazy and the more you go into the arm pits of Counties the more you encounter them cause it is more affordable for them. When the Economy goes down crime goes up.
Sure there are always the nice areas of towns and thats where one wants to live but sort of sucks when surrounded by scum bags. Don’t get me wrong. Its great to have pride in your city but things are only getting worse every where you turn.

anon April 18, 2014 - 3:35 PM - 3:35 PM

I’d like to see MDUSD Superintendent and the Police Chief and the City Counsel spend one day at Olympic Continuation School. It will be an eye opener with all the gangs at the school.

bored@work April 18, 2014 - 4:22 PM - 4:22 PM

@ No Offense. Concord is not a dangerous city. Trust me, I’ve lived in dangerous cities where there were shootings EVERY night. Murders EVERY week. Parts of Oakland are dangerous, parts of Richmond are dangerous, parts South Central LA are dangerous. Concord is just like every other mid size suburban city. It certainly has issues but I would never be afraid to walk anywhere in Concrd at night. The problem is people are afraid to confront these losers. They’re all cowards. If people know the story behind this shooting, TELL THE POLICE. All these little wannabes are only legends in their own mind. If the public decided not to tollerate this anymore we could fix the problem. But instead people hide in their houses, don’t want to get involved. The reasons city’s with low crime rate have low crime rates is because the citizens in those city’s wouldn’t tollerate it. The police can only do so much. A lot of time the cops are idiots too. People need to fight back! It can be done and it has to be done. Not for us but for those that come after us.

heads in the sand April 18, 2014 - 4:28 PM - 4:28 PM

I wish it were true that Concord City Council reads the comments on Claycord and feels compelled to do something real to keep Concord from circling the drain, but, in my experience, the council are a self-deluded bunch who know very well that Concord has a bad reputation, but they think that is because Concord needs a better ad campaign. So what they focus on are fluffy press releases, proclamations and commendations when they should be focusing on changing things that result in the bad reputation to begin with. They dismiss Claycordians as anonymous haters who are a small minority. It will never change.

@bored April 18, 2014 - 5:15 PM - 5:15 PM

I’ve said the same thing you’re saying a million times. And every time, the commenters here have told me I’m an idiot and the only way to prevent crime is to basically lock yourself in your house forever.

I do not see why Concord does not pull its usul. Aka: Keep the crime stats low at any cost and just act like the incident never happened. Thus, cough cough ergo no crime!
