This post is “Talk About Politics”.

Please use this post to talk about politics, and keep politics out of the “whatever” thread.

Thank you, and be kind to each other!

JWB –
You wrote; “Yes, then I am probably arrogant.”
Nice to see you admit the truth.
That aside, I give up. This is tiresome.

@ Tiny dot #398

You really didn’t get it? My point is I don’t pretend that I know what people understood certain words to mean 200 years ago. However, I know that the meaning of words can change over time.

Do you really think a person in 1950 would understand the same thing when talking about a phone as a person would understand today? Or how about a person talking about mail in 1950 and today? You really think folks in 1950 would have looked at their phones to check their mail?

In my view claiming that words have not changed in 200 or more years and will not change for another 200 years and more implies that you actually know what a person would have meant by this word then or another person will understand it to mean in the future.

Justice Scalia saying essentially that he can read a word now and that it has not changed in 200 years means that he knows how a person 200 years ago would have understood that word. I call this dishonest.

Look up the Chinese energy company ENN Harry Reid’s son Rory Reid and the plans ENN has to build a 5 Billion dollar solar power plant on land the Bundy’s family has held on to for over 150 years. (Rory Reid works for ENN) The solar power plants ENN and the Reid’s want to see built have been proven to kill the Desert Tortoise. The same Desert Tortoise, that the BLM used as an excuse to take away all the Bundy’s land, so they could ‘protect’ the Tortoise.

Despite the obvious partisan gain to be had if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s son Rory (a failed 2010 Nevada gubernatorial candidate) had somehow been involved in a “land grab” affecting the Bundy family ranch operation–the facts just do not pan out as such. Indeed, Rory Reid did in fact have a hand in plans to reclassify federal lands for renewable energy developments. Just northeast of Las Vegas and Nellis Air Force Base, plans were drawn by Reid allies to potentially develop 5,717 acres of land for such use. While it would be fair to claim that such activity was in Bundy’s relative neighborhood, the federal lands once leased by the family were more than 20 miles away, east of Overton, Nevada. Contrasting maps offered by InfoWars and those entered into federal court record prove such a theory to be a stretch.

Rand Paul Says Jimmy Carter Was Better on the Budget Than Ronald Reagan

“The deficit went through the roof under Reagan. So how long did it take Ron Paul to figure out that the guy he had liked, endorsed, campaigned for, campaigned for him? The very first [Reagan] budget. Ron Paul voted “no” against the very first Reagan budget… Everybody loved this “great” budget. It was a $100 billion in debt. This was three times greater than Jimmy Carter’s worst deficit.”

“You know, we wanted Reagan to veto a budget or to have balanced budgets and he didn’t do it. And it wasn’t anything personal against him. I think his philosophy was good. I just don’t know that he had the energy or the follow-through to get what we needed.”

“People want to like Reagan. He’s very likable. And what he had to say most of the time was a great message. But the deficits exploded under Reagan. The Democrats said, “Well, the deficit’s going up because you reduced the tax rates and supply side economics doesn’t work.” But the interesting thing is, if you look at the numbers, tax rates went down in the early ’80s, tax revenue did rise. The reason the deficits exploded is they ignored spending. Domestic spending went up at a greater clip under Reagan than it did under Carter.”

“Some say, well that’s fine, but there were good old days. We did at one time…When we had Reagan, we were fiscal conservatives. Well, unfortunately, even that wasn’t true. When Reagan was elected in 1980, the first bill they passed was called the Gramm-Latta bill of 1981, and Republicans pegged it as this great step forward. Well, Jimmy Carter’s last budget was about $34 or $36 billion in debt. Well, it turns out, Reagan’s first budget turned out to be $110 billion dollars in debt. And each successive year, the deficit rose throughout Reagan’s two terms.”

“As Republicans, it’s been very easy for us to say we’re fiscally conservative and we’re for balanced budgets. It’s never happened. We were in charge in the Reagan term, the next Bush’s term, this last Bush. The deficits were horrendous under the Republicans…During Reagan’s two terms, domestic spending went up faster than Jimmy Carter.”

“We live in such bad times that if you don’t have somebody who truly believes that we need to take an ax to government, you’re not going to get anything done…Even when we elected Reagan. A lot of us loved the rhetoric of Reagan. My dad supported Reagan in 1976 when only four US congressmen would stand up for him. The deficit still exploded…The deficit exploded because domestic spending rose faster under Reagan, so did military, but domestic spending rose faster under Reagan than under Jimmy Carter…We have to admit our failings because we’re not going to get new people unless we become believable as a party again.”

You wingies can watch all the clips of the above quotes here:

408 Just you four? April 24, 2014 at 5:48 PM

U.S. Navy destroyer stops four Mexicans rowing towards Texas in the Gulf of Mexico . . . . .
The Captain gets on the loudspeaker and shouts, “Ahoy, small craft – – Where are you headed?”
One of the Mexicans puts down his oar, stands up, and shouts, “We are invading the United States of America to reclaim the territory taken by the USA during the 1800’s!”
The entire crew on the destroyer doubles over in laughter.
When the Captain finally catches his breath, he gets back on the loudspeaker and asks, . . . . . . . “Just the four of you?”
The same Mexican stands up again and shouts, “No, we’re the last four. The other 22 million are already there…”

Excerpts from Republican Thinking (An oxymoron)

14. Their characteristic Republican passion to insult and underestimate opponents, together with presuming superiority over people smarter than they are, disables their arguments, while forcing unification of their own opponents into a mass that can generally overwhelm their leaders at the polls.

“Among those who support views of limited government, there is often a “higher than average endorsement of views that could be seen as racial resentment,” said Andra Gillespie, an associate professor of political science at Emory University…

…”What this reflects is that there are groups of people who have not been accepted by politically correct circles and have never learned to frame their comments in a palatable fashion. They take pride in that,” Gillespie said. “The articulation of their views is somewhat fringe, but the underlying attitude is not. They are a minority viewpoint, but they are a large minority.”

“Gillespie said part of the issue is a perception that the far right is made up of people who are white and uneducated.

“There are people who walk around with the impression that conservatives are completely stupid and that’s not fair nor is it accurate,” she said.

“Conservative radio host Sean Hannity said on his show Thursday that he worries Democrats will now use Bundy’s “repugnant” and “despicable” comments to paint everyone on the far right as racists.

“The Democratic National Committee pounced on Bundy’s comments.

“If you ever want to be taken seriously for your outreach efforts, you might want to start by not defending racists,” DNC spokesman Mo Elleithee said in a statement.

YOUNG DEMOCRAT TRAINING LESSON: Women’s Health care services.

“WE KNOW THAT WOMEN USE MORE HEALTH SERVICES THAN MEN…they also have lower incomes than men, [77% less for doing the same work] ” she told reporters. “Thirty-five million women were either uninsured or underinsured in 2009-2010 and the situation has been getting worse in the past decade.”

“THE ANALYSIS FINDS THAT 18.7 MILLION U.S WOMEN WENT WITHOUT INSURANCE IN 2010, and a further 16.7 million were underinsured; that is, they had insurance but were at risk of high out-of-pocket costs relative to their income. Uninsured rates varied across the country. They were highest in the southern and western states; in Texas 30 percent of women were uninsured in 2009–10, compared with 5 percent in Massachusetts,” the report reads.

Other findings in the report:
•TWENTY PERCENT OF U.S. WOMEN (18.7 MILLION) AGES 19-64 WERE UNINSURED IN 2010, UP FROM 15 PERCENT (12.8 MILLION) IN 2000
•About 39 percent of women in the U.S. spent $1,000 or more on out-of-pocket medical costs over 2009-2010, compared to 24 percent in Switzerland, 1 percent in Sweden, and none in Britain
•TWENTY-SIX PERCENT OF WOMEN IN THE U.S. HAD MEDICAL BILL PROBLEMS, compared to 13 percent in Australia, 12 percent in France, and 4 percent in Germany

Last November, the same Commonwealth team reported that the number of underinsured U.S. adults rose by 80 percent between 2003 and 2010, from 16 million to 29 million. In 2009, a team at Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School and Ohio University reported that MEDICAL BILLS CAUSED 60 PERCENT OF PERSONAL BANKRUPTCIES IN THE UNITED STATES, FOR MEN AND WOMEN ALIKE.

Current Lake Superior ice cover is nearly 20 times more than last year

Images captured this week by NASA’s Aqua satellite show that Lake Superior is still nearly 60 percent ice covered, according to the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab. The ice is an average of 8.9 inches thick.

Around this time last year, only around 3.6 percent of the lake was covered with ice, and in 2012, ice was completely gone by April 12, NASA said in a statement.

Data from Environment Canada shows that ice cover amongst all the Great Lakes for the week of April 16 is nearly 40 percent, which is the highest level since 1996, when ice cover reached nearly 20 percent.

On March 6, ice cover for all lakes combined reached 92.2 percent, the second highest level in 40 years of record-keeping, NASA says.

447 Yhe Phantom April 25, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Combat service includes Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force, not necessarily “in country” in Vietnam 44years ago.

Since they do not inspire video games or movies, Republicans minimize them for their service. A sailor on duty in the Mediterranean served just as well as one in the South China Sea.

Service during peacetime goes completely disrespected by Republicans.

The issue is much larger than my service record; it’s about the systematic betrayal of all regular service veterans by this Congress.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/press_box/2000/05/drooling_on_the_vietnam_vets.html

“Although Nexis overflows with references to protesters gobbing on Vietnam vets, and Bob Greene’s 1989 book Homecoming: When the Soldiers Returned From Vietnam counts 63 examples of protester spitting, Jerry Lembcke argues that the story is bunk in his 1998 book The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam (click here to buy it). Lembcke, a professor of sociology at Holy Cross and a Vietnam vet, investigated hundreds of news accounts of antiwar activists spitting on vets. But every time he pushed for more evidence or corroboration from a witness, the story collapsed–the actual person who was spat on turned out to be a friend of a friend. Or somebody’s uncle. He writes that he never met anybody who convinced him that any such clash took place.

While Lembcke doesn’t prove that nobody ever expectorated on a serviceman–you can’t prove a negative, after all–he reduces the claim to an urban myth. In most urban myths, the details morph slightly from telling to telling, but at least one element survives unchanged. In the tale of the spitting protester, the signature element is the location: The protester almost always ambushes the serviceman at the airport–not in a park, or at a bar, or on Main Street. Also, it’s not uncommon for the insulted serviceman to have flown directly in from Vietnam. In the most dramatic telling of the spitting story, First Blood (1982), the first installment of the series about a vengeful Vietnam vet, the airport is the scene of the outrage. John Rambo, played by Sylvester Stallone, gives a speech about getting spat upon. Rambo says:”

#443 to 11B10, means that if you do not know the answers…probably not combatant.

457 Carol Putman April 25, 2014 at 6:30 PM

I have sent the following email to the Mayor of Clayton about their disgraceful treatment of senior citizens who live in the City of Clayton:

“Dear Mr. Stratford,

I have two questions for you.  How do you people possibly justify not providing an exemption for seniors to the special assessment imposed on our property taxes?  You are taking from low and fixed-income seniors to provide services for the better heeled areas in Clayton. Oakhurst and the business in Clayton should be paying for their own streetlights  and other luxury services.  Disgraceful.

And, secondly, how do you people possibly justify the exhorbitant increases to our garbage rates when Allied Waste contributes to the supports of the totally useless and unnecessary Concert series?  If the businesses in Clayton can’t support themselves or generate income, why should I support them with increases to my garbage rates to provide a concert series to attract people to downtown Clayton?   You are taking from the low-income seniors in the community by way of their garbage rates to support business owners who have income to provide a concert series that is of appeal to very few in the community.  If the concert series is not self supporting, why should I give up my precious little income by way of increased garbage rates to support it.

You people are so greedy you set absolutely NO example for the youth of this community with your “Do The Right Thing Campaign” because you don’t know how to do the right thing yourselves.  You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Signed Carol Putman”

@447Dennis Will you excuse me? You’re
just wasting my time.

459 Yhe Phantom April 25, 2014 at 6:44 PM

You guys just post leaders for the home page…then vanish.

460 . April 25, 2014 at 7:18 PM

And phantom talked about the brass catcher at the muzzle…..

That exposes him as a liar right there…. Notwithstanding the discussions about calibers…..

Give it up.

461 Yhe Phantom April 25, 2014 at 7:22 PM

When Republicans say they want a strong military, they really mean war materials purchases, not paid personnel.

They only loved us when we were burning through equipment, supplies, and munitions.

What would Ronald think? He only wanted Star Wars equipment.

462 Yhe Phantom April 25, 2014 at 7:24 PM

Republicans really hate enlisted Democratic Veterans and have no use for any military not wounded in a combat zone, and then they slide on the VA hospital, rehab and home care services by cutting the budget with Sequestration, and refusing to pass a clean VA bill.

They don’t own the armed services card, the Democrats do! That’s why they don’t pay for it.

Dennis #447

Did Yhe Phantom really claim to hand carry a .50 cal? I don’t suppose you could verify this?

464 Anonymous April 25, 2014 at 7:28 PM

The phantom ought to look at the comments under What would you do if you caught a burglar?. Poster 38, (thats me) suggested making him read all the phantoms posts. Buncha people chimed in in agreement. Nice to be appreciated .

465 furian April 25, 2014 at 7:44 PM

Jesus, you wingies really do whine a lot.

Phantom has really messed up your heads, turned you all into a bunch of cry babies.

Or were you already like that?

BWHAHAHAHAHAHA

Now whine some more about me calling you out on your sniveling.

I can handle it, I promise.

I’ll even give you wing dings a box of tissues.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

466 RunDogRun April 25, 2014 at 8:12 PM

Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky
made a Republican out of me.

467 Dennis April 25, 2014 at 8:25 PM

@Shadowblade
no, actually he just claimed to be a S.A.W. operator, and INFERRED his Ramboness. You know, like you: lying by insinuation, so that you can claim later that you weren’t really lying.

So instead of dodging the issues by defending PhanDumb, how about you answer my question in #448. I see JWB is doing a hasty retreat also.

@JWB: so tell us how the meaning of “ARMS” has changed, to exclude modern weapons unknown to the authors of the Constitution, but also how the meaning of “speech” has changed, to exclude coverage of radio, tv, phones, and internet, because it was unknown to the authors of the Constitution?

instead of haggling over semantics of what “is” is, try making a STATEMENT. Explain your position.

468 Dennis April 25, 2014 at 8:27 PM

@RunDogRun

you’re wasting everyone’s time. I’d call that a fair trade ;)

469 Dennis April 25, 2014 at 8:31 PM

@furian
it isn’t whining, it is merely a refusal to tolerate your tantrums. Don’t you have a curfew or something?

470 Dennis April 25, 2014 at 8:33 PM

@PhanDumb #460

amazing how you can type that drivel while wearing your straightjacket.

471 RunDogRun April 25, 2014 at 8:36 PM

Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky
made Republicans out of a lot of
long-term Democrats.

472 Anon April 25, 2014 at 8:39 PM

Thanks Anon #462! That was a good laugh, bet it would turn the criminal around knowing they’d have to read Yhe PhfungTurd’s dribble.

473 Connie Dobbs April 25, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Dennis, there’s also no way for you to ‘verify’ what anyone said prior to March 21, which makes shadowblade automatically right. Cute, huh?

474 furian April 25, 2014 at 9:04 PM

Wingies gonna’ wing.

And cry and moan.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
