Water Cooler – Fast-Food Horror Stories

April 15, 2014 · 63 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

Do you have any fast-food horror stories? If so, feel free to share them with us.

Talk about it….

1 mtzman April 15, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Not exactly a horror story but I once went into a KFC and ordered a three-piece chicken meal with all white meat. They refused to sell it to me because then there wouldn’t be enough for everyone else. I walked out and I guess the horror of it was that I was really hungry for fried chicken!

2 Fast food itself is a horror April 15, 2014 at 12:25 PM

I worked at a Fast Food joint as a teenager. That was a horror in itself.

I never ate that food, still don’t.

3 Rob April 15, 2014 at 12:28 PM

I worked at a fast food place for 8 days when I was a teenager and that was enough horror to assure me of three things:

1) Almost any other job would be better so I got a different job.
2) It cured me of eating fast food.
3) Whenever a later job got tough I would think back and realize that whatever I was going through now could be worse.

4 Dorothy April 15, 2014 at 12:32 PM

What kind do you have in mind? I haven’t found anything beyond a string or a wrapper twist in mind over the years. But I have been in, and walked out of, places where mice, rats, and roaches were visibly walking or running around. Some of those places were not fast foods but big name restaurants.

5 Soxtiger April 15, 2014 at 12:33 PM

When I first came to the US I used to love, love, love Taco Bell..crazy, I know. I always wondered tho why it gave me the runs just like all the other fast food dumps (well, duh). It took not one run in with food poisoning but two from both Burger King and Jack in the Box to finally get me to catch on that this food is crap, all of it. Never had any since and would rather chew off my right arm before I go there again.

6 Here's a good one April 15, 2014 at 12:35 PM

I’ve eaten fast food all my life and now I’m fat. So I’m going to sue McDonald’s for making me this way.

7 Silva April 15, 2014 at 12:39 PM

I worked at the Jack In The Box as a teenager (Clayton Road) for 2 years. That was a nightmare. We kept the place immaculate at all times. Had too. When they opened the Pavilion for business we had blocks long drive-through lines after the shows. Nobody else was open. Years later I ordered 2 super tacos during a sale and got food poisoning. That ended my relationship with fast food.

8 marinemom April 15, 2014 at 12:53 PM

I ate just 1 time at Sun Sun Gardens in PHill.
As I was about to take a bite of my rice a live roach was crawling around on the fork.
Another time the copper skillet on Clayton Rd my son had a roach crawl out of his salad.
Both places were reported to the health department and closed the next day.

9 aj buttacavoli April 15, 2014 at 12:55 PM

I was at a popular fast food place and the fellow at the next table kept jumping up and down. I thought he was drunk – he wasn’t eating – finally I realized he had a woody and was attempting to relocate it. Talk about losing my appetite!

10 Kids working at fast food restaurants April 15, 2014 at 1:00 PM

would often serve “Special Burgers” to kids from rival high schools……pubes…boogers…etc.

11 B&tj April 15, 2014 at 1:02 PM

Someone I know bought some Wendy’s and got really really sick for a few days. doctor did a few tests and it said the employee must’ve 1.) coughed/spit in the food or 2.) he/she didn’t wash their hands. Disgusting.

12 Big Fred April 15, 2014 at 1:05 PM

Ordered a 5 piece chicken nugget from a Martinez McDonalds last year and when it came to my table, all seemed good. I was about 2 pieces in, when I took a bite I found a multicolored, piece of rubber inside! It was disgusting… I sent it back and they accused me of lying and placing it in there myself… I couldn’t identify the object but it was horrifying. I have eaten McDonalds since, as I know the price I may have to pay, but I try to avoid fast food now at all costs. It makes me sick just thinking about it!

13 Julio April 15, 2014 at 1:08 PM

We have had food poisoning from Taco Bell and Poco Loco both. Not just one of us but both on the same visit to the places. Taco Bell we didn’t even make the mile home. Never been back to those places. I know all fast food places can be questionable. Denny’s has made me sick so I don’t ever go there either.

14 ? April 15, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Getting In N Out for a “treat” on a road trip with the family. Having my husband get food poisoning in the car from the grapevine all the way to Concord. Not fun for anyone involved.

15 ConcordGal April 15, 2014 at 1:10 PM

Thanks to working at Burger King.Taco Bell and Wendys as a teengager I know longer eat faat food….I will not ruin it for anybody else but after learning the ins and outs of fast food restaurantsit was enough to discuss me to never eat there again!!!

16 Concordejet April 15, 2014 at 1:33 PM

fast foods are unhealthy if you want to add that to horror

17 Bishop Estates April 15, 2014 at 1:50 PM

I found a dead roach in a salad at a Clayton eatery….didnt want to make a scene so I called the waitress over quietly and pointed to it. She said “oh no…not again” Again, really? Then she asked if I would like another salad….”ah no, thank you and we are leaving”

18 yes indeed April 15, 2014 at 1:55 PM

ill never forget. coming home thru napa after a beautiful day at the lake. a group of us stopped at wendys. after feasting on their fine foods i stopped at the counter to have one more cold milk on the way out. as i guzzled the milk down i felt solid chunks go down my throat. once i realized what i was drinking it was too late. everything came up, worst part i was at the counter. it got on and into the cash register, on food orders, counters. they at first offered my money back for the milk, but i insisted my money back for my meal, which they happen to be wearing. needless to say. all the other customers left. the place had to close for the rest of the night for cleaning. i always check my milk now.

19 Clayton Pete April 15, 2014 at 2:16 PM

In defense of McDonald’s…
I worked there for a few years as a teen. That place was kept cleaner than my own home. We were constantly wiping down surfaces in the kitchen, mopping the floor, etc. We kept a close eye on frozen and refrigerated foods, never using anything expired. (Although we DID sometimes keep food in the warming bins for a bit too long…)
It was hard work, constantly on the go, on your feet, sweating over the hot griddles. I’m glad I will never have to do that kind of work again (knock on wood). But that job is where I learned my work ethic, learned to appreciate teamwork, and learned to never look down on someone who holds that type of job.
Now, mind you, this was a few decades ago. Things may be different there now.

An Epicure, Dining At Crewe

Anonymous

An epicure, dining at Crewe,
found quite a large mouse in his stew,
said the waiter, “Don’t shout,
and wave it about,
or the rest will be wanting one, too!

21 McDonald's 1988 April 15, 2014 at 2:36 PM

I bit a chicken nugget in two and there was yellow puss inside. This was on my lunch break on Clayton Rd and I threw up for half hour strait and could not stop throwing up and a cop saw me and came up to me asking if I was ok or drunk. It was not just yellow puss. A view and a little red was in it also. So gross looking I would still throw up years later if I thought of it. I have not eaten a chicken Mc nugget since. If you saw what I saw you would understand.

22 McDonald's 1988 April 15, 2014 at 2:39 PM

There was a vane in it and red. May have been blood coming out of the vane. Not view. Like I said. You would have had to see what I saw to truly understand how gross it was.

23 Enfield303 April 15, 2014 at 3:04 PM

My son and I got food poisoning from a Subway in Pittsburg. Now I see how Jarod lost so much weight.

24 lateSuzie April 15, 2014 at 3:05 PM

Went to a fast food restauraund once, too a big bite out of a burger and found a clump of something in it, needless to say I have never returned to that eating establishment.

25 Michelle April 15, 2014 at 3:09 PM

Any one ever hear of the “fly in the soup”? Well that really happens, except we found insect parts and extremities; along with nails from some unknown origin. Have to wonder about that.

26 anon April 15, 2014 at 3:33 PM

One time I wanted two ranches aND they only gave me one and made me pay for the other. Horrible experience.

27 Blink April 15, 2014 at 3:34 PM

We’re heading out for beach camping stopped at jack in the box…everyone opted for lunch except me…..as it was 1030 a.m…..by evening the vomiting started…5 out 6 had fevers and expulsions from everywhere for 2 days….never gone there again….no one well enough to travel back home…
So we toughed it out …..never eat chicken anything out after that

28 Incognito April 15, 2014 at 3:46 PM

After reading the above 25 comments….now you all know why I don’t eat out. Couple this with “Restaurant Impossible” on the Foodnetwork and you will surely think twice about restaurant establishments of all kinds, not just the fast food ones.

29 anonanonagain April 15, 2014 at 3:48 PM

So glad that I don’t eat fast food, after reading these stories I never will…..

30 lizzie April 15, 2014 at 3:51 PM

I never worked at a fast food place, but did work for a catering co, for a brief period of time. The owners, cut corners every possible way. They would partially cook, then microwave until done. EVERYTHING! After learning that no one had a food safe cert, I bailed. I don’t eat at fast food places, because I feel they are not healthy.

31 @Enfield303 April 15, 2014 at 4:03 PM

Good one! :)

32 @Soxtiger # 5 April 15, 2014 at 4:13 PM

Are you sure your right arm will taste better than the left?

33 @#9 April 15, 2014 at 4:37 PM

Can you define Woody? Not sure it I’ve been served one.

34 Silva April 15, 2014 at 5:01 PM

OOo. I just remembered the fly I sucked up in my milkshake straw once upon a time.

35 Anon319 April 15, 2014 at 5:08 PM

My husband and I ate at the Copper Skillet one night. And of course there was a giant (living) cockroach in his salad. He called the waiter over who just shrugged and WHACKED it with a napkin then said “okay now?” I am not joking! Then they tried to make us pay on the way out! Next day the Health dept closed them down. They had to tear the whole building down to build El Pollo Loco.

My husband worked at a local fast food place in Iowa when he was a teen and told me that they would mix the “sauce” that goes on burgers in big plastic garbage cans. They would take off their shoes and get in the can and mash the stuff up with their feet oh yuck oh yuck. I have never been a fan of “special sauce” anyway but your feet? You have to be nuts to eat at a fast food place.

36 Blond April 15, 2014 at 5:22 PM

@32
If you’re unsure you’re really missin’ out!

37 Geezer Butler April 15, 2014 at 5:59 PM

At Mimi’s, although not fast food. When I bit into the raisin nut bread, I bit into a spring from a salad tong. I informed the waiter, the food was free and they were very polite. I think they would let us drink them dry, but we just ate. I just could never figure out why a spring would be in the bread, and thankfully no damage to my teeth. I just don’t want to return…….

38 still here April 15, 2014 at 5:59 PM

I prefer cooking at home, there’s just too much crap out there for my taste.

39 landon alger April 15, 2014 at 6:08 PM

Burger King Clayton and treat worst food poisoning of my life don’t ever eat there I hate Them for what they did to me for the four days

40 mutts April 15, 2014 at 6:42 PM

I’m gonna be sick.

41 Big Fred April 15, 2014 at 9:20 PM

@ McDonalds 1988 – I think we had the same ‘treat’ in our nuggets! Mine was not in a puss form however. It was yellow and had some red veins running through it but it seemed rubbery as though it had been cooked. Anybody know what that is? Is it the filling of the nugget that simply didn’t cook correctly? If that is the case, I am never having any chicken from McDs again, no matter what the circumstances are! Gross!

42 Teacher Wannabe April 15, 2014 at 9:25 PM

I don’t know what people are doing to their orders…I eat fast food 2-4 a week out of necessity. Except for wrong orders ( reg. Coke instead of diet, special requests wrong, etc.) I have never gotten ill from fast food. Stronger metabolism? Or exaggerated horror stories? I don’t disbelieve, but find it hard to believe this many people get sick, what with the health checks and all .

43 Maya Piñon April 15, 2014 at 9:47 PM

The larger amount of food choices on the menu, the worse it is to eat at that restaurant. I once worked in a restaurant where the owner was cheap and ordered cheesecakes to be served individually with raspberry sauce at $8.00 per slice. The cheesecake came in a box of 12. Because of the price many customers did not buy it. If an area started to grow mold, the owner would simply ask servers to throw away any moldy slices, but the rest he said was perfectly safe to sell and consume. I remember cheesecakes being in the refrigerator for up to a month at a time and the owner would still say it could be sold and consumed. The owner didn’t care about expiration dates, nor his customers. Eventually, they shut down or they likely would have been closed down due to lack of business and old food.

44 Chicken Nugget surprise April 15, 2014 at 9:49 PM

Maybe a blob of chicken fat?

45 livesteam April 15, 2014 at 11:16 PM

Hubby and I both wound up with good poisoning at KFC on Clayton. I also got it at CoCos on Treat a friend had a roach in her salad there too ewwww

46 Dr. Jellyfinger April 15, 2014 at 11:47 PM

Dickie’s BBQ I decided since it had been about 6 months I’d give them another try………. Fail!

47 so gross April 16, 2014 at 6:44 AM

I don’t think ill ever eat again.

48 @42 teacher wannabe April 16, 2014 at 8:24 AM

Seriously?! Try making a lunch or grabbing a granola bar and banana instead of fast food 2-4 times a week, and watch the movie “supersize me” if you need more convincing that by eating that much fat food you are killing yourself (and your kids if you’re feeding them it too!)

49 @42 teacher wannabe April 16, 2014 at 8:25 AM

^^^ lol typo offered truth….! *fast food**

50 what i don't understand... April 16, 2014 at 8:34 AM

Why do we even have fast food! This really angers me…just look at all the comments!! This crap is literally poisoning and sickening our community by the hundreds!

Concord, I say tear down every fast food joint and replace every one of those dumps with locally owned organic cafes and deli’s! AND make sure the buildings are built by local unions so that there is triple the benefit for the community! Could you imagine how awesome it would be to drive down clayton rd and see dozens of cute, locally owned cafes instead of nasty rundown fast food chains?!?! I think that would be amazing and boost my pride in Concord ten-fold!

Which politician wants to transform concord into a truly healthy place to live that sets a model for other cities?! YOU’D HAVE MY VOTE :)

51 NoFastFood April 16, 2014 at 8:40 AM

I will do fast food once a quarter. I always get the fish filet and fries–I figure they’ve have been boiled in oil so all the bugs have been boiled out. Besides that, I do not do fast food. I prefer to cook my own meals. At least I know what goes into the food.

52 Suzanne April 16, 2014 at 8:51 AM

Fred, that was definitely uncooked chicken fat–I would have sued if I found that in my food. That’s worse than roaches or flys in the food. ugh

53 Cowellian April 16, 2014 at 9:14 AM

There’s a lot you don’t understand! Unless you’re getting out your checkbook to buy all those businesses in order to replace them, exactly who do you think will pay for your folly?

54 Michelle April 16, 2014 at 9:37 AM

There is a lot you assume…

55 Vanessa April 16, 2014 at 10:23 AM

Pus chicken nuggets? oh God!

56 Teacher Wannabe April 16, 2014 at 11:19 AM

@#48. I do that too. And l’m healthy. Great BP. 6′ 170#, so I’m not overweight. I ride an avg. 50-80 miles/week on my bike, so…

57 cuzzzzzzzz................ April 16, 2014 at 11:34 AM

Dr Jellyfinger – I 2nd you on “Ickies BBQ”. It is beyond terrible.

58 Angelface April 16, 2014 at 12:25 PM

I’d eat chicken fat with a fork before I’d go to any restaurant. I and my DH are restaurant workers. I’ve had enough cancer to not eat anything I don’t have a LOT of information about. Can’t do it anymore.

59 TOB April 16, 2014 at 3:23 PM

If you saw how KFC gravy was made you wouldn’t like it. Put sheet pans on the floor under the pressure cookers catching all this crusty black/brown droppings sits all day. They then use that to prepare the Gravy. Can imagine what gets kicked up and on those pans too.

60 Kelley April 16, 2014 at 4:16 PM

UGH TOB. First pus chicken nuggets and now that too!?

61 Sister Mary Elephant April 16, 2014 at 5:25 PM

Okay kids, I think this has gone far enough!

62 Rose Garden April 16, 2014 at 6:01 PM

I try to eat healthy, so I stay away from fast food.

Are these true stories?

63 RanchgirlCA April 21, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Worst thing to happen to me was food poisening. I’ve had one case from Subway that was so bad, I’ll never eat at any Subway ever again. The other time(s), I got food poisening twice, six months apart, from The Cheesesteak Shop in WC. Both times after they had remodeled from the tiny shop they used to be. Will still go to the Concord one, but never the one in WC.
