The Water Cooler – Wal-Mart or Target in Concord?

April 7, 2014 · 107 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

Currently, there are no plans to build Wal-Mart or a Target in the City of Concord, but if you had to choose one to move into the city, which would you choose?

Talk about it….

1 Triple Canopy April 7, 2014 at 12:01 PM

Monument Bl would be a perfect place for a Walmart Super Center!

2 Choice April 7, 2014 at 12:03 PM

Target.

3 The Mamba April 7, 2014 at 12:06 PM

I prefer Target, not a fan of Wal-Mart at all.

4 Target for sure April 7, 2014 at 12:09 PM

Prices are about the same as Wal-Mart. The only Wal-Mart I have ever been in is the one in Martinez. The place creeps me out. I would much rather go to Target. Better yet, wait for Google Delivery and not have to bother to shop in a store ever again. I would much rather shop on line and fight the thieves over deliveries on my front porch than shop in most stores. Rude, self centered, unwashed and dangerous looking people are just to prevalent in most stores.

5 Anon April 7, 2014 at 12:11 PM

Neither. Just go to the Target in PH, and if you need to – go to Walmart in Martinez.

6 David April 7, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Walmart focuses on low income, low education communities… that describe Concord perfectly.

7 Target...please! April 7, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Target in concord would be great! Just set it right down on top of the pathetic KMart. What an upgrade.

8 mutts April 7, 2014 at 12:19 PM

Target. Walmart sucks

9 girl w/ dogs April 7, 2014 at 12:20 PM

A Target replacing that sad Clayton Rd. Kmart would be fantastic!

10 Dorothy April 7, 2014 at 12:23 PM

Agree with Anon, Target is in PH and WC and Pittsburg. Walmart in Martinez is better than the one in Pittsburg. How about something other than either in Concord?

11 Anon777 April 7, 2014 at 12:25 PM

Target.

12 Winston April 7, 2014 at 12:28 PM

I’m for Target. It doesn’t attract the same problems that WalMart does. Check out the Martinez Walmart parking lot and ask if you want that in your town.

13 Anon April 7, 2014 at 12:32 PM

Olive Garden

14 Rick April 7, 2014 at 12:34 PM

I prefer not to see any non-union stores anywhere.

15 Julio April 7, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Neither one of them.

16 Yobyz April 7, 2014 at 12:38 PM

Target!!!! In monument boulevard! Walmart is just creepy and way too low quality; it’s gonna make Concord seem bad. But Targets are very cool, they have such great security systems and they enhance the neighborhood they’re in by giving 5% back to the community. So far I have to go all the way to walnut creek for target. I would love one in monument.

17 . April 7, 2014 at 12:42 PM

walmart is no longer the same as what Sam Walton started. Will not set foot in a walmart. As for Target the one in Pittsburg is close enough.

18 Michelle April 7, 2014 at 12:45 PM

I would love to have Target move into Concord.

19 PH Dad April 7, 2014 at 12:46 PM

Neither one. Do we not have enough “shopping destinations” in the area?
Both of these stores are only the source of low wage part time jobs with no benefits.

20 mr rogers April 7, 2014 at 12:47 PM

I would say walmart. They havent had their security breeched and theres no way i will ever use anything but cash at Target

21 Blink April 7, 2014 at 12:50 PM

Target target target…if any
Especially would be nice to have something in the vacant
Blockbuster area

22 Target April 7, 2014 at 12:53 PM

Walmart Sucks!

23 The Professor April 7, 2014 at 12:54 PM

Olive Garden.

24 BagsFlyFree April 7, 2014 at 12:57 PM

Target on Clayton and Ayers.. Instant center revival.

25 Concorddad April 7, 2014 at 12:58 PM

I wouldn’t shop at Wal-Mart if if was the last place to shop. I’d start hunting and gathering I guess. This is truly whats wrong with this country. Low pay, no benefits unless you buy them yourselves on that low pay, they’ve been sued numerous times for not promoting women. I truly believe is Mr. Walton the man that started the company was around he would be ashamed of what it’s become. A huge % of the employees are on public assistance to supplement their income on our backs. While they make billions every year. Target give a much better wage and benefits. They give back to the communities they are in etc.

26 ChampagneKitty April 7, 2014 at 12:58 PM

Target! Walmart is anti-union.

27 mutts April 7, 2014 at 1:02 PM

Changed my mind…neither. Rather see a decent restaurant here.

28 @mutts, #27------What's you definition of "decent restaurant"? April 7, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Can you give us a name or two?

29 Non union guy April 7, 2014 at 1:08 PM

Definitely Wal-Mart because it is non-union.

30 Judge Roy Bean April 7, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Unions are over rated.
Would like to see Wall-Mart out by Lowe’s.
Target with a new building on K-Mart Clayton road site

31 Anon April 7, 2014 at 1:12 PM

Would love to see Target replace KMart on Clayton Road.

32 Suzanne April 7, 2014 at 1:17 PM

It would be nice to have a Target move into Concord, but Walmart would be much better.

33 Suzanne April 7, 2014 at 1:18 PM

It would be nice to have a Target move into Concord, but in reality Walmart would do much better.

34 CW April 7, 2014 at 1:19 PM

I’d like to see a Wal-Mart with a full supermarket go in to where K-Mart used to be on Contra Costa Blvd. in PH. Or a Win-Co. A supermarket with better prices than Safeway without having to drive to Concord for Costco or to Pittsburg for Win-Co.

35 Antler April 7, 2014 at 1:20 PM

The Target in Pleasant Hill is quite close enough for the occasional browse.

If, just for purposes of this Water Cooler question, we MUST have one or the other of those two big-box stores in Concord, then I would prefer Walmart’s because of their product variety. But the K Mart space in The Vineyards does not have sufficient parking for either of those stores. (Actually, I wish that Walgreen’s had leased the K-Mart space rather than building a new store at Four Corners.)

Would the current K-Mart space make a fantastic location for a Cracker Barrel? There could be a HUGE gift shop and they could change the parking lot….push store footprint out to make one of their trademark front porches with rocking chairs.

36 Idiocracy April 7, 2014 at 1:20 PM

Target

37 KJ April 7, 2014 at 1:21 PM

Target.

The few times I’ve been in a Wal-Mart, I found it to be messy. They didn’t seem to have enough staff to keep the shelves organized and stocked. K-Mart is better than Wal-Mart.

38 CW April 7, 2014 at 1:23 PM

I also don’t get all the Wal-Mart hate when they are far from the only big box retailer paying low-wages and holding hours down for workers to avoid having to pay benefits. Frankly, I think a lot of it is snobbery, pure and simple. Wal-Mart appeals to Joe and Jane Six-Pack and the yuppies of the world look down their noses at that.

39 Chester E. Kitty April 7, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Wal-Mart is disgusting!! They are town killers and treat their workers like crap! The store is always dirty too!!!!

40 Me April 7, 2014 at 1:28 PM

Walnut Creek had a big Target, why would Concord need one? And I do NOT ever want to see a Walmart go up. Is it really that hard to drive from Conocord to WC? Or Martinez if you really feel you need a Walmart? Plus the Target in WC has a ton of parking. Sorry, I’m just fearful this question is a sign of a store to come–parks good, stores bad.

41 RandieLynn April 7, 2014 at 1:29 PM

walmart….

42 Isaac April 7, 2014 at 1:32 PM

Off topic, but how about a Dave and Busters to replace the Sunvalley Sports Authority?

43 chalkboy8 April 7, 2014 at 1:33 PM

Barnes and Noble!

44 Isaac April 7, 2014 at 1:33 PM

Also, what’s with the lack of an Olive Garden?

45 Anne Moss April 7, 2014 at 1:37 PM

Umm we already basically have a Target but its in PH…its really not that far to drive. Concord is crowded enough as it is we dont need more huge stores to make traffic congestion worse.

46 ladybug April 7, 2014 at 1:40 PM

Love Target!!! Hate Walmart!! I would always get hassled for my coupons at Walmart. Never had a problem at Target and the stores are always clean and organized.

47 Incognito April 7, 2014 at 1:49 PM

I, personally, wouldn’t want either.

To all your Walmart haters… just remember all of those mistreated employees of Walmart make a choice to work for Walmart. If you don’t like how your employer treats you, then find another job.

Also, instead of knocking the “department store” concept of shopping, such as the Targets, the Walmarts, and the Kmarts, how about eliminating some of these “Dollar Stores” which seem to be cropping up everywhere.

48 AnonK April 7, 2014 at 1:52 PM

Sorry to hear about all of the Union haters, But I’ve worked at Both Walmart & Sams Club. Been there – Done that. If you want to be treated like crap and have no rights, have at it.
While a Union is not Heaven (Nothing on this Planet is), it’s Way better than the cut throat, no rights non-union crap.
And for anyone that wants something else on Monument – Forget about it. Until Concord comes to their senses and widens the lanes (to Three) ALL THE WAY to Costco – No business is going to take that risk with the gridlock.
Wal-mart lowers your property values, attracts riff-raff and is a DUMP.

49 Larry April 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM

Surprised nobody here has mentioned a Super Target. I would love to see one of those.

Super Target? Yes, they do exist.

50 Don P - n concord April 7, 2014 at 2:02 PM

How about a bass pro shop or cabellas?

51 Jess April 7, 2014 at 2:05 PM

Target! Walmart and Target carry the same type items, but Target is a much nicer store in which to shop. I’d like to see Target replace the K-Mart on Clayton Rd., but the folks who say there isn’t enough parking are probably right. There seem to be several vacant storefronts in the shopping center at the corner of Treat and Clayton. The Staples there hardly does any business. Maybe they could get rid of Staples, reconfigure that shopping center, and put in a Target. Woo Hoo!

52 Realist April 7, 2014 at 2:11 PM

Super WalMart – this side of the bridge. Otherwise, I’ve seen, but not here, a Super Target. It was great.

53 NEITHER April 7, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Good God neither, please!!! Let’s see a local business owner fill this space! So sick of these hideous big box stores…let’s start supporting small/local business…we’ve already got a HUGE DICK’s moving close to town so why more big box crazyness?!?!?!

BOYCOTT Target (unless you want your identity stolen)
BOYCOTT Walmart (unless you want to support underpaid workers, and products made with slave wages in other countries)

54 Naco April 7, 2014 at 2:19 PM

Bass Pro Shop isn’t that bad of an idea……no Wally World, keep it out. Target is o.k., but the existing stores aren’t that far away. All these non-union types can stuff it, a union sets standards that trickle down to the scraps.

55 Cy Nical April 7, 2014 at 2:29 PM

BOTH!

competition is good and so is having a choice

56 Concordejet April 7, 2014 at 2:36 PM

White Castle please

57 ClayDen April 7, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Neither; the Target stores in Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill are close enough and I won’t shop in Walmart or KMart. I’ve got my Amazon Prime, and one day delivery is on the way.

58 @Issac (42) April 7, 2014 at 2:59 PM

I’ve heard the Sports Authority area in Sun Valley Mall is going to become a food court.

59 @neither April 7, 2014 at 3:08 PM

Local business can’t compete. Prices too high and selection not enough. They will fail since no one will go. Nice dream though.

60 RanchgirlCA April 7, 2014 at 3:12 PM

Not that we need more of either, but I prefer Target. That said, there are things I go to Walmart for specifically.

61 anonanonagain April 7, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Target. I can’t stand Walmart.

62 Rob April 7, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Target

Walmarts are just so depressing – do any Walmart workers ever look like they want to be there?

63 Concord Sa ndy April 7, 2014 at 3:56 PM

I wonder how many of the union bashers have ever had the job security that they provide and the benefits that are available to most. I understand that people need t save a buck during these economic times but at what cost to the rest of us? Neither of the stores mentioned concentrates on USA made goods. Their prices should be even much lower than they already are. Frankly, I’m beginning to think I will just wear my old stuff and boycott all stores until they start looking for products made in this country. BUY MADE IN AMERICA. Look for it.

64 Cowellian April 7, 2014 at 4:45 PM

Walmart,
because PeopleOfTarget is a lot less entertaining.

65 Silva April 7, 2014 at 5:11 PM

Neither one! There are way too many around. I’ll always miss Long’s.

66 Subterfuge April 7, 2014 at 5:23 PM

I would prefer a book store.

67 About Sam April 7, 2014 at 5:30 PM

Sam was one of the main $$ contributors that
Repealed the fair trade laws. This killed small
business ( mom and pop) stores and set ” Wal Mart
up to be the store America shops.

68 MrDioji April 7, 2014 at 5:34 PM

Neither. There’s enough of them.
I used to not mind Target too much, but opening on Thanksgiving was a big no-no in my book. Haven’t been there since.

69 Atticus Thraxx April 7, 2014 at 5:34 PM

I’ve been in Wal-Marts that sell ammo, never been in a Target that did. Wal-Mart. Jeez, it’s like picking which ugly cousin you gotta kiss.

70 Concord Grape April 7, 2014 at 5:43 PM

Wal Mart on Monument? Shoplifter heaven

71 Coggins Square April 7, 2014 at 5:46 PM

Neither. Both the Target stores in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek are close enough to Concord, and the WalMart store in Martinez is also relatively close to Concord. The Pleasant Hill Target store is literally right on the city limit of Concord and Pleasant Hill, as the city limit line straddles along the freeway in that area.

72 @59 April 7, 2014 at 5:52 PM

We vote every time we spend our money and push demand to either kill our free market or keep it alive. It saddens me that you think a duopoly is a sign of competition, but it’s not. If we vote to support (spend money at) stores like Walmart and target where the shelves are filled with products that are made by people paid slave wages in other countries, then we keep this trend alive and those stores open. If we support fair trade, made in the USA products and local businesses with these practices than we will eliminate the former and force big box stores to close or change their ways. So yes, I will not only keep dreaming about a better US economy but I will also take action to support the change that needs to happen!!

73 DanMtz April 7, 2014 at 5:54 PM

I went into a WalMart one day hoping they might have some obscure computer cable (they didn’t have it, btw). It was pretty early, not many customers in there and the employees were doing some sort of “company cheer” type of thing led by one of the managers. Creepy. That was 8 years ago and I haven’t been back since.

74 Larry Mangini April 7, 2014 at 5:59 PM

Neighter.

75 Larry Mangini April 7, 2014 at 6:05 PM

My bad,meant to spell “Neither”

76 Dorothy April 7, 2014 at 6:15 PM

@ #28 – How about Texas Road House? I have been to them in many states and they are always full and always good and the service (once you can get in) is always great. There are 3 in the Bay Area (I’ve been in each of them too) but I would love to be able to get to one less than 45/50 miles away.

77 Reality Slap April 7, 2014 at 6:36 PM

WinCo – employee owned. Good Prices. Good Brands.

78 Lucy April 7, 2014 at 6:49 PM

I didn’t read the posts yet but I wish they would have put in a Walmart where Dick’s Sporting Goods will be located where the old theatre dome is…SO many sporting goods stores already!

79 @69 April 7, 2014 at 7:04 PM

More than likely no ammo will be sold in a Concord Walmart. I don’t want to sound like this phantom guy, but CA has many Draconian laws and bleeding heart b.s.

80 LOUIE April 7, 2014 at 8:14 PM

TARGET WALMARTS R DUMPS

81 Sam Y April 7, 2014 at 8:25 PM

WIN-CO for sure……….. in the Old K-Mart location on Contra Costa and Chilpancingo…..By DVC!!

82 Cuzzzzzzz...... April 7, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Neither……………….Concord is low-end enough without adding a WalMart………….There are 2 nice Targets in the area so we don’t need a Target. How about a SteinMart????? We could also us an Ulta for the ladies.

83 Atticus Thraxx April 7, 2014 at 8:57 PM

Then it’s a wash #79. Though the irony of a company named Target with a target as a logo would refuse to sell targets, does not escape me.

84 mika April 7, 2014 at 9:15 PM

Walmart.

85 GoGo Gomez April 7, 2014 at 9:20 PM

Target

86 Walnut Creek Resident April 7, 2014 at 9:58 PM

Bring it on!!! Both of them. They help a lot of folks regardless of what the minority thinks. People have stepping stone jobs. People would have a better place to shop too and close. Good idea. Pass it on.

87 ConcordDad April 7, 2014 at 10:04 PM

I love Target. Anyone that talks about the identity theft issue they had obviously didn’t have it happen to them. Target went above and beyond to protect their customers. They took care of all paper work, issued new cards and paid for a years worth of credit monitoring. I’d like to see Wal-Mart do any of that!!

@CW and the six pack comment. I have family in the midwest. Wal-Mart went in and took over their small area killed off all the smaller competition then raised the prices beyond belief. My 72 year old mother now has to drive 40 minutes to shop at a reasonable price. They could care less about anyone!!

88 Chevrolet girl April 7, 2014 at 10:29 PM

Walmart is well known for buying property and running out the little guys. Then they close up shop, and move. Then the towns have no big or little places to shop and no jobs…I suggest everyone watch the video…Walmart…the high cost of low price. Quite a reality check!

89 who? April 7, 2014 at 10:45 PM

Neither, also bike trail not finished for years off of willow pass right by the willows. Also whats up with the archs downtoen. Furthermore there is a huge lot on the corner of oakgrove and monunent blvd. Behinf orchard supplies that needs to be used. Total eyesore and hurts our community. Pray for baypoint antioch and pittsburg they are hit bog with this problem. I love everyone of our neighboors.
Ps. Give the people an Olive Garden.

90 ANNONeeemoose April 7, 2014 at 10:55 PM

Get rid of that horrible disgusting pit of a KMART on Clayton Rd and bring in a Target! Any day! No Walmart. Yuck!

91 Kay April 7, 2014 at 11:29 PM

Wal-Mart Super Store!

92 Vandy April 8, 2014 at 7:09 AM

Neither! Keep more big box stores out of beautiful Concord.

93 shelly April 8, 2014 at 7:35 AM

I like the KMart.

94 shelly April 8, 2014 at 7:41 AM

I LOVE McCalous too.

95 Krystle April 8, 2014 at 7:52 AM

Target..totally wal mart sucks

96 silva April 8, 2014 at 8:18 AM

Is this about which big box retailer to stick us with for the Naval Weapons development?

97 Really April 8, 2014 at 8:50 AM

All of you Walmart bashers really shop at Walmart. Target is an ok midrange store, but the cheap prices at walmart can’t be beat. I dislike going there because of the employee situation; but I bought a few flat screens there at almost half the price than target.

98 anon April 8, 2014 at 8:55 AM

Walmart, low prices rule!

99 anon April 8, 2014 at 8:57 AM

perish the thought of any!
Krystle, it’s kmart that sucks. didnt you see ‘rainman’.

100 iwasthere April 8, 2014 at 9:31 AM

Weinerschnitzel

101 chalkboy8 April 8, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Hardee’s

102 Iggeycay April 8, 2014 at 2:24 PM

Can’t we come up with something better than Walmart, Target or K-Mart?

103 Mister Wister April 8, 2014 at 3:19 PM

Didn’t work out well last time Walmart tried to come to Concord. Voted it down and ended up with Costco instead.

104 galeforce April 8, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Very difficult to choose between
the two. Walmart carries White
Stag and Danskin, two women’s
brands I like. Their electronics
are the cheapest around. Target
is good for stuff like sheets and
housewares. I shop Target in the
WC and Walmart in Mtz, but the
one I wish was closer is Walmart.

105 NT April 8, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Target. A Whole Foods would also be nice.

106 Alex Green April 8, 2014 at 10:03 PM

If you are into human rights abuse and child exploitation, then either store is a perfect candidate!

Both companies have terrible records when taking care of the labor that produces it’s goods. Walmart goes a step further by mistreating and exploiting the U.S. citizens it employes as well.

107 CW April 9, 2014 at 7:09 PM

There are already “Whole Paychecks” in WC and Lafayette. What we need is a supermarket for those of us on a budget, and that has a consistent selection (unlike Cost Plus Bargain Market).
