The Water Cooler – Waiting at the DMV

April 4, 2014 12:27 pm · 28 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

What’s the longest amount of time you’ve waited at the DMV?

Talk about it….

A couple of hours in San Diego. I brought a book.

Two hours

Not sure about the longest but my shortest wait was just 14 seconds from when my number was printed to when it was called. It was at about 4:30 on a Wednesday.

I couldn’t believe it. I felt so lucky that on my way home I stopped and bought a lotto ticket. Apparently my luck ended at DMV that day

As I commented on the earlier story, I use AAA for as much as possible. However, there are some things they won’t do.

Last time I visited DMV about 3-4 years ago, I walked in with an appt and saw a friend already there who didn’t have one. She had been waiting for almost 3 hours at the time. I was in and out in under 15 minutes.

Usually, I make an appointment. Best thing the DMV ever did was switch to the “take a number” system. Now, the wait time doesn’t bother me nearly as much as when we used to stand in line the whole time.

No report on Concord cop robbing old women for pills lmao

8 ngat-8 April 4, 2014 at 1:00 PM

in my experience, its not as bad as it used to be. an appointment is a must

9 15 minutes? April 4, 2014 at 1:30 PM

Once when I went at lunchtime, I had to wait about 15 min. in Concord.

Usually, I know to go before they open, get in line, and I’m in and out in 5 minutes or so.

Not in this thread, there isn’t.

1 hour the last time, Its gotten a lot better than back in the day. They use a Bingo like system now. I still think they need to tighten up on their hiring process. There are way too many old slow people working for the DMV. Hire some younger, faster and more chipper/eager to work types….

@9 Went there 20 minutes before the opened one time, when I got there 30 people were already in line. Just picked a bad day.

What happened to the story about the concord cop that got arrested? Mr mayor were you pressured to take it down?

14 CLAYCORD.com April 4, 2014 at 2:29 PM

The story has been on Claycord all morning. It’s still there.

Years ago I waited 45 minutes because I didn’t have an appointment. Learned my lesson! The longest wait since then was 15 minutes.

16 ChampagneKitty April 4, 2014 at 2:40 PM

When I need the DMV, I go to the Concord one. In recent years, I haven’t had to wait for too long because I get sent to one of the windows for the disabled. There just isn’t as long of a wait for those.

17 Jess April 4, 2014 at 2:50 PM

I usually get an appointment so the wait time is short. The last time I needed to go, I looked at the DMV website and it had the current wait times at each office. Even if you didn’t have an appointment, you could check how long the wait was before you left home. Great idea! I do as much as possible online. Their computer system is surprisingly easy to use.

18 The Morons who stand in line for three hours April 4, 2014 at 3:16 PM

are probably used to it …..from hours of waiting for Welfare, Food Stamps, AFDC, Parole Meetings, CPS Hearings,……..etc……

19 YearsAgo April 4, 2014 at 3:31 PM

Years ago, I waited in line about 1 hour. It used to be such a nightmare to go to the DMV. Now with their online appointment scheduler, it’s about 15 minutes at the most.

20 Dorothy April 4, 2014 at 4:23 PM

Had to wait up to 2 hours once. Next time I was there I was in and out within 20 minutes – completely done and out the door even before my appointment time. Most DMV stuff I do at the AAA but sometimes you just have to go to the DMV in person.

21 Shelly April 4, 2014 at 4:44 PM

Hot topic today.

22 Mike "troll" Dame April 4, 2014 at 6:18 PM

maybe 45 min in the past 10 years, i go first thing in the morning n the people there are usually in good moods n friendly as opposed to later on in the day when i get busy n they have delt with 1000s of idiots

23 Killjoy April 4, 2014 at 7:58 PM

About five minutes. I’ve waited longer at AAA when there was a line.
For the DMV, I always make an appointment. It’s in and out.

About 3 friggin hours and I was pisssssssed! I thought Pittsburg DMV might not be so crowded as Concord or Walnut Creek so I drove over the hill. I was waiting there for 90 minutes to register a car & when my number is finally called I get some prissy fat boy who tells me my title (pink slip) is no good, “it’s a copy” I tell him he’s crazy & he takes it to his supervisor to look at. I see her shrug & say “I don’t know”. He brings it back & says he can’t do it. I consider getting arrested for assault & figure it isn’t worth it, so I drive to Walnut Creek DMV, wait another 90 minutes and they say Huh? There’s nothing wrong with this! I paid the registration fee & split. Pittsburg DMV is the pitts!

25 dilligafman April 5, 2014 at 3:50 PM

About 5 minutes, Alway call & make an appointment!!

26 Julio April 5, 2014 at 5:08 PM

Dr Jellyfingrrr. Pittsburg is the worst of all the CCCo offices! For years we have gone to the Walnut Creek office. Even if there is a line the people are competent and move faster. Workers in Pittsburg have not a clue what they are supposed to do. S l o w and slower

27 And another thing April 6, 2014 at 12:06 PM

Pittsburg is better than WC and Concord

28 Dr. Jellyfingrrrrrr! April 6, 2014 at 4:21 PM

If I thought there might be one thing better about Pittsburg than WC or Concord it would have been the DMV……….. but I was wrong. Well the ‘burg does have a Popeye’s Chicken…. but Concord will have one too in a few weeks! Pittsburg has a nice Marina & boat launch too… that will be a tough one for Concord to top…. even tougher for Walnut Creek.

wait a minute…………..

You know if we did some real excavating, dredging, maybe bypass some of those pesky environmental regs….. Walnut Creek could become a nice little resort city! Concord too! Pacheco even. That would be so cool! And the property values! OMG! CNWS ……..We could go all Disco Bay over there!!! A’s could build their new waterfront stadium… the possibilities are endless. What a grand idea…. and we all have the crappy Pittsburg DMV to thank for providing me with the inspiration!
