For the second time in less than a month, workers at the Tesoro Refinery in Martinez have been sprayed with sulfuric acid, according to ConFire.

Paramedics are responding to the refinery this morning to treat and transport two workers who were reportedly sprayed with acid around 10:40am.

No word yet on the extend of their injuries.

On Feb. 12, two workers at the Martinez refinery were splashed with sulfuric acid. They were airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center to be treated for what the U.S. Chemical Safety Board described as first and second-degree chemical burns.

UPDATE, 1050am: County HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials Team) has been called to the scene.

UPDATE, 10:58am: HAZMAT has been cancelled by ConFire.

UPDATE, 10:59am: Two ambulances have been called to the scene.

I hope these two injured workers get all of the care that they need.

Tesoro would not want to be caught minimizing the accident by sending workers to first aid when they may need hospitalization.

You forgot to mention the second ambulance was canceled

Who needs the Feds , private industry can handle it.
They should be shut down if the Fed Safety Board
isn’t slowed in.

I agree they should be shut down for not allowing authorities to do the proper inspections. This is an old habit they have. I know people who have worked there since the 60’s and it is not a safe place to work. These people would be my father-in-law and husband.

Definatley the worst refinery I ever worked in. It’s funny how much they’ll preach safety in their trainings but once you get out in the plant its almost like there are no rules. At least they don’t allow smoking there anymore though 😛

javier? what do you mean no smoking? they dont allow smoking? tobacco? …in a refinery? arent you already inhaling fumes?!

Richard Harp March 10, 2014 at 3:10 PM

Smoking in a refinery is prohibited except in very controlled areas because of the open flames on the matches and lighters. Not because of what you may be inhaling. The fact is, its a dangerous place to work even under the best of conditions. I do find it notable that both recent issues involve sulphuric acid. Its evil stuff and wreaks havoc on pipes and equipment. Its tough enough to keep an eye on the equipment under the best of conditions, but with the omnipresant pressures to cut down on maintenance and inspection expenses some things get put off a little too long, unfortunately resulting in this type of incident.

sorry richard, you are wrong! there is no smoking on the property – i just confirmed with a friend. as part of a healthy lifestyle, ‘wellness’ program! they USED to be allowed to smoke in controlled areas, but not anymore! whats next, sodas? hahaha

Wouldn’t be surprised! With all the “nanny” rules we have. I retired last year from Shell after 40 years of service and they still let folks smoke in the designated places. Albeit those places are getting fewer and fewer. I would not be shocked if it was banned from refinery property in the not too distant future.

No more smoking on Tesoro property. I think it’s a rule at all their refineries.
