The Winter Spare the Air Season is Over

March 1, 2014 10:31 am · 35 comments

Friday was the last day of the Winter Spare the Air season in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The district’s Winter Spare the Air alerts ban the burning of wood indoors or outdoors when air pollution is determined to be at unhealthy levels.

The season ended with 30 Spare the Air Alerts since Nov. 1, which tied the record set in 2006-07.

The Summer Spare the Air season starts in May.

Way to kill the mood at the end lol

BAAQMD = Jack Booted Thugs March 1, 2014 at 10:56 AM

So now I don’t have to let Jack Broadbent and Dave Garrison control what I’m allowed to do in the privacy of my own home? Awesome.

This is the beginning of the end for sweet America. When we let two-bit morons decide how we live as free living americans its about over folks.

serious question March 1, 2014 at 10:58 AM

So…early spring and early fall are immune from Spare the Air days?

Dorothy March 1, 2014 at 11:02 AM

What!? No Spring Spare the Air program?

On the bright side March 1, 2014 at 11:02 AM

There seems to be no regulation between not and May, so we should all burn as much as possible.

The Pyromania Club meets Monday evening of each week behind the Fire Station at 6 PM.

DanMtz March 1, 2014 at 11:21 AM

Ironically, the recent stormy weather has improved the air quality making spare the air days needless.

Silva March 1, 2014 at 11:32 AM

So.. it’s a free-for-all for 2 months now?

My fire is glowing as we speak…

russ March 1, 2014 at 12:17 PM

Now that my uncovered wood is soaking wet…..

anon March 1, 2014 at 12:31 PM

We don’t need Spare The Air day. Stupid over regulating laws.

Puddintain March 1, 2014 at 12:39 PM

Gak!! COPD!!! Neighbor’s burning, can’t BREATHE!!!!

Anonymous March 1, 2014 at 1:29 PM

Lord Broadbent has granted leniency to his many serfs

claycordian March 1, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Whatever will Lord Broadbent and the other morons do in the next few months to justify their exorbitant salaries that WE are paying them? Go back into their caves until May? What good do Summer STA days do when they won’t outlaw leaf blowers?

mutts March 1, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Have to make room for spring scare the air days. Overlapping could be illegal.

Brace yourself March 1, 2014 at 4:02 PM

This tyrannical governance will only EXPLODE if we don’t take back our government in the next election.

The scout March 1, 2014 at 4:35 PM

Again a bunch of myopic losers on here.

Pleae go live in another country to learn what real oppression is.

Ask Venezuela or Ukrain how bad it is.

@The scout March 1, 2014 at 6:07 PM

Well said. I’m so tired of these whining morons who can’t grasp the concept that a few sacrifices have to be made periodically to live in heavily populated areas.

Spare Me March 1, 2014 at 6:17 PM

No wonder I have so much wood left to burn that I could not when it was cold.

mutts March 1, 2014 at 6:18 PM

Hey scout, how do u think oppressive countries get that way? A little at a time?

mika March 1, 2014 at 7:18 PM

Burn, baby, burn!

@mutts March 1, 2014 at 8:52 PM

Exactly! “A few sacrifices” here and there. Then, next thing you know, you have “real” oppression. It’s the scout and #18 who are myopic, not those of us complaining.

Personal freedom March 1, 2014 at 10:27 PM

Should not inflict hardship on others. You cavemen
(Women) that feel its okay to burn at your whim
in a densely populated, Valley, should move to Idaho ,
or a much less populated, better ventilated area .
Your selfish attitudes towards other people’s
rights only demonstrate your inability to live in a
civil manner, your views are in the minority and
only expressed in an anonymous forum such as
this or some other crank web- site. You lack any
intelligent answer or solution so you resort to the
Big government scare tactic to deflect from you
self centered attitude.

@mutts March 1, 2014 at 11:11 PM

>> Hey scout, how do u think oppressive countries get that way? A little at a time?

Can you name any country that had the freedoms we do and then became an “oppressive” country a little at a time?

@@mutts March 1, 2014 at 11:19 PM

With an increasing number of people living in a fixed space, there comes a time when you have to stop pissing in the pool. If you were around this area in 1970, you might remember how bad the pollution was before they banned the backyard burning of trash and leaves. There were whiners and moaners back then, too.

@Personal Freedom March 2, 2014 at 6:33 AM

Actually, people with health problems aggravated by fireplace smoke are in the minority. They (you?) are the selfish ones who expect the world to change to accommodate them. Why don’t you move to Idaho? You’re the one who seems to be bothered by the air here, not me.

@@Personal Freedom March 2, 2014 at 10:34 AM

You are obviously one of the nay-Sayers that
haven’t been out doors when the inversion layer
stagnates and traps the smoke from these fires
at ground level. The asthma rates among children
are rising, your rebutal is just “stupid”, not ignorant,

Matt March 2, 2014 at 11:16 AM

@Personal Freedom–26

I don’t have any health problems, but I have common sense, which you’re obviously lacking.

Society will err on the side of consideration for others, especially seniors and children.

You’re STUPID, and you don’t care about anyone but yourself. You will not get very far in life.

Me March 2, 2014 at 3:21 PM

I was feeling a bit down this morning and read this yesterday and just finished clearing some dead wood, oak, and thought I would have a nice patio fire in my fire pit. Sure enough police pulled up? I said ” Hello? Can I help you?” ( I am not kidding btw ) There was not much smoke. The police said they got a report of a possible home on fire. I said what I was doing. The Martinez Policeman was nice and said he was just checking , make sure we were ok. And I thanked him. Then, a Fire Engine pulled up and stared up at our house from the truck. I waved them off. They waved back and left. So. I wondered what happened? A busy body neighbor or stalker? Because it was obviously a little camp fire and we have them sometimes, with a screen, on the patio. Cost to tax payers? Who knows. But this is a true story of what happened today when I had a little patio pit fire.. Nice..

@27, 28 March 2, 2014 at 4:00 PM

You’re ugly and you smell bad.

Liberals are funny March 2, 2014 at 5:25 PM

You preach tolerance and all that, but as soon as somebody has an opinion that doesn’t match yours, you call them stupid.

Train Horn Dude March 2, 2014 at 6:53 PM

I hear China needs spare the air days. They can have ours. How’s that sound?

chalkboy8 March 2, 2014 at 7:00 PM

China needs spare the air DECADES.

slagheap March 2, 2014 at 10:42 PM

thanx, BAAQD for doing something about wood smoke, which is extremely dangerous to many folks. too bad there are a bunch of tools that flaunt the law, and burn anyway. PLEASE cite them whenever & wherever possible.

Lets end the madness March 3, 2014 at 11:03 AM

So where is the study or proof that these wood banning periods have done anything to improve the air quality?? There is no proof that an unknown number of homes in any particular area and any particular time has harmed the air quality to a point that someone became gravely ill as a result. So why are we spending taxpayer money for politicians to play czar and forbid people of their civil liberties?? There is no information that tells us air quality is directly affected by households that decide to have a fire in their homes on any given night!!

Stop wasting taxpayer money to deprive taxpayers of civil liberties.
