UPDATE: 1500 Without Power in Downtown & North Concord Due to Blown Transformer

February 28, 2014 20:54 pm · 22 comments

1500 people are without power tonight in parts of Downtown & North Concord, and early reports are saying it’s due to a blown transformer.

At least one person is also trapped in an elevator in Concord.

PG&E says the estimated time of restoration is just before midnight.

UPDATE: About half of the power has been restored to N. Concord & the downtown area after a blown transformer knocked out electricity earlier tonight. Full restoration is expected by 11:45pm. If you come upon any traffic signals that aren’t working, please treat it as a four-way stop.

Currently, about 800 people are without power.

Driving thru Conocord I saw the flash, saw people pouring out of a dark Skipollinis and then saw a power pole in flames. Lots of traffic lights out please drive safe!

Looks like there might be an accident right there at the 242 off-ramp, too. Lots of police cars blocking the ramp. Unless that’s where the transformer is – thought a saw a truck that looked spun around.

People are driving straight through the intersections without stopping. Hope we don’t hear a story about an accident tonight.

Was sitting outside of CYC when I heard what sounded like an explosion then the area went black. Then another exploding sound with the sky lit up. On the way home saw all the police & fire at Market & Concord where the telephone pole was on fire. Happy to hear no one was injured.

Staying at the Premier Inn….. The power started surging and was making a loud noise. Went outside on the balcony (facing Chilis and the freeway) just in time. to see the power pole on Market Street (just behind the Shell station) literally explode. It shot a big fireball into the sky. The pole burned a good 30 mins before the fire dept blasted it with their hoses. The smell of ozone lingered in the air for an hour or so. Pg&e restored power pretty quickly.

I work at Peets coffee in todas santos and we had to get all of our customers out and close up shop in the pitch black. Spaghetti factory was out to and customers still stayed around and eat their food in the dark.

First responders probably earn their keep on a wet Friday night anyways, probably extra with the power out. Thanks to the folks that come when called.
