The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

Today is National Tortilla Chip Day. Speaking of Tortilla Chips, what Mexican restaurant has the best chips & salsa in Claycord?

Talk about it….

although the question posed is in regards to a mexican restaurant, the only store-bought chips that I find to be outstanding can be purchased at World Market. Name: Xochitl (Totopos de Maiz)

Thin, crispy, and only a touch of salt.

Cinco de mayo

3 Domestic CEO February 24, 2014 at 12:35 PM

La Pinata warm chips and great salsa!

4 Reality says... February 24, 2014 at 12:36 PM

I find this entire post and the comments racist! Are Mexican restaurants the only ones who serve chips!

What’s next? Fried chicken and watermelon day!

I am calling channel 2 news right now.

Taqueria Los Gallos, by Todo Santos.

I’ve never heard of National Tortilla Chip Day…..but hey….I’m one to celebrate!

La Tapatia on Treat……my favorite Mexican restaurant.

For those who celebrate “for cultural reasons”…..Happy National Chip Day!

I have “one gentleman in mind”, and I’m not referring to my husband or sons! Or Miguel or Jose…….

I hate to say this but Chilis. Not crazy about the rest of their food but their chips and salsa are really good.

8 Elwood February 24, 2014 at 12:44 PM

El Tapatio Pleasant Hill

9 ClayDen February 24, 2014 at 12:50 PM

The cheese dip at El Charro in Lafayette is the best! I also love the hot and sweet salsa at Casa Gourmet Burrito in Clayton.

10 tiff February 24, 2014 at 12:51 PM

Chevys!!! Nice light warm chips and good salsa! But Cinco De mayo has killer food!!!

11 Claycordian February 24, 2014 at 12:59 PM

El Charro in Lafayette…

Hey “Reality says”

You must really get bent out of shape when it is “National Hamburger and Fries Day” or “National Fish and Chips Day?” Maybe even “National Rice Pudding Day”??

Mexican restuarants serve TORTILLA chips Einstein, now get back in the Arby’s line and wait your turn!

13 skrab February 24, 2014 at 1:11 PM

Casa Sanchez. It’s a local company. You can buy their chips and salsa at Safeway, Lunardi’s,etc. The best! I love the gruesos.

14 bigdaddy February 24, 2014 at 1:12 PM

probably not Carondelet high school??

I think I meant El Tapatio on Treat. That’s what I get for reading other people’s posts. Thanks Elwood…..

When I think of great chips & salsa I always think of Chevys. Found there is still one in San Ramon. Going to have to head out there one of these days. I saw on Facebook lots of people like Guadalajara Grill, which I just don’t get. The worst Mexican food I’ve ever had was at that place. To each his own, I just refuse to eat there anymore.

17 Pleasant Jenny February 24, 2014 at 1:20 PM

La Tapitio on Main Street in Martinez. And their bean dip is the best I’ve ever had.

18 Diablo February 24, 2014 at 1:20 PM

Chili’s has the best chips, not so much on the food.
Let me know when it’s National Sushi Day.

19 HeadButt February 24, 2014 at 1:45 PM

La Tapatia – either one – On Willow Pass or in Martinez. Great chips and salsa, etc., etc.

20 mutts February 24, 2014 at 2:05 PM

El Tspatio on Treat. Nice and thick salsa, chips always warm. My favorite restaurant.

21 The Mamba February 24, 2014 at 2:27 PM

22 SILLY February 24, 2014 at 3:16 PM

EL CHARRO

23 Sheila February 24, 2014 at 3:22 PM

This sounds like a fun one to celebrate! Probably in El Charro in Lafayette.

24 Jerk February 24, 2014 at 3:34 PM

None of the places mentioned can top Taco Bell

25 Yummy February 24, 2014 at 4:12 PM

El Grullense in Pacheco has THE BEST chips, salsa, and bean dip.

26 @#13 February 24, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Can you say sarcasm?

27 Craig February 24, 2014 at 4:34 PM

El Charro could be good, becauae of the blue cheese dip,but they keep the chips way too long and they are stale! greasy! and cold!. Ugh!
Sometimes they have been known to reserve them over again!

28 Steve February 24, 2014 at 4:36 PM

El Charro in Lamorinda……

29 huh? February 24, 2014 at 4:36 PM

i’ll stick with the New Mecca !!!!!!

30 personally February 24, 2014 at 4:43 PM

Chili’s chips are the best. I haven’t found a really great salsa at a restaurant but one of my Co – workers makes a fantastic salsa.

31 John February 24, 2014 at 5:12 PM

La Tapatia on Willow Pass and La Tapatia in Martinez have the best chips , salsa and bean dip.

32 wkgf February 24, 2014 at 5:27 PM

LOS RANCHEROS HAS AWESOME CHIPS AND SALSA SUPER AUTHENTIC..

33 Ted K., SuperMax February 24, 2014 at 6:09 PM

Why does it have to be a Mexican restaurant? What about the Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, and other Illegans?

34 #6 is the winner!!! February 24, 2014 at 6:27 PM

Taqueria Los Gallos at Todos Santos.. BEST chips and pico de gallo. Chevy’s is good too.

35 Julio February 24, 2014 at 6:55 PM

New Mecca? OMG cannot understand why people worship that place.

36 Clayton Valley Grad February 24, 2014 at 8:15 PM

El Tapatio on Treat Blvd. Great food, chips and drinks!

37 anon February 24, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Only average in Claycord. Nothing stands out above.

38 Old Gringo February 24, 2014 at 9:22 PM

El Tapatio on Treat #1 for chips and salsa

39 Geddy Lee February 24, 2014 at 9:30 PM

La Tapatia on Willow Pass for salsa, El Molino for chips. I get salsa to go and pick up the other’s chips!

40 It's simply me!! February 24, 2014 at 9:58 PM

I personally like to go to traderjoes, they have a good variety of chips for one low price,I get the blue corn tortilla chips in a 25oz bag for $6.89 plus tax also the habanero chunky salsa they have it in many sizes I get the 8oz for $10.99 and I put the chips on the oven for 1 minute and there nice and warm
Also try the sangria it’s a Mexican grape soda they sellit at Safeway for $3.69plus $.10 CRV and plus tax a single bottle.TRYIT!!
If I eat at a Mexican restaurant it will definitely be el charro!!

41 Nick February 24, 2014 at 10:08 PM

It’s Simply Me…..how do your memorize all those prices? My wife just throws everything in the cart.

42 Antler February 24, 2014 at 10:08 PM

Anyone have a comment about Maria-Maria’s chips and salsas? I haven’t eaten there in a long time….remember the meal itself was delicious, but can’t recall the preamble part of it.

43 Dr.Dolittle February 24, 2014 at 10:54 PM

Maria Maria used to be awesome, not sure what happened. The Guacamole is like froth…serious cutbacks since opening

44 Nancy February 24, 2014 at 11:30 PM

Atticus is buying free Margarita’s ’til midnight…..

45 just1dering February 25, 2014 at 6:57 AM

Don Jose’s in Alamo!

46 The Mamba February 25, 2014 at 7:49 AM

Dr. Dolittle, that’s the Dudum Enterprises formula, bring in good chefs when the restaurant opens and then yank them and rotate them to the newer offering.

47 Chris E February 25, 2014 at 10:21 AM

That place in Lafayette on Mt. Diablo Blvd with that hard crazy cheese dip along with the hot and mild salsa. The food is OK, but the chips and that dip is pretty fascinating.

48 Donjuan February 25, 2014 at 10:59 AM

El Tapatio pleasant hill. They are the best. Always fresh. Don’t get them confused with the other tapatios. This is the original
. Love them lays the bet food

49 I'm The Urban Spaceman February 26, 2014 at 1:09 AM

shouldn’t this take place around Cinco de Mayo?
They could call it Maize days.
