Oakland police are investigating reports of a possible carjacking and kidnapping that occurred near a Safeway store off of state Highway 13
this afternoon.

Reports came in around 12:50 p.m. of a man with a knife seen entering an SUV outside the Safeway at 4100 Redwood Road, in the Lincoln Square Shopping Center, and forcing the driver to drive away, police said.

The SUV contained an elderly man and a girl believed to be about 13 years old, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.

The car is described as a red or burgundy 2001 Infiniti SUV with a California license plate number of 6JFM648.

Anyone who sees the car should call 911 immediately, police said.

“We don’t want anyone approaching this vehicle,” Watson said. “We have information that the suspect is armed with a knife … so we want to approach this vehicle very cautiously.”

The suspect is described as a black man in his 40s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with salt-and-pepper hair. He weighs about 165 pounds and was wearing a blue jacket and blue jeans, police said.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN UPDATE ON THIS CASE:

suspect

Oakland police announced today that they have identified a person of interest in what was initially reported as a carjacking and kidnapping at the Lincoln Square Shopping Center on Tuesday.

At a news conference at police headquarters this morning, Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said the person investigators are looking for is 54-year-old Roy McCamey.

An Amber Alert was issued Tuesday afternoon after an incident outside a Safeway store at 4100 Redwood Road in which witnesses told police that a knife-wielding man had carjacked a vehicle with another man and a teenager inside it shortly before 1 p.m.

Police initially described the car as a red or burgundy Infiniti SUV with a license plate number of 6JFM648 but later said the vehicle might actually be a sedan.

Watson said Tuesday afternoon that initial reports indicated that the man with the knife did not appear to know the occupants of the car, who were described as an elderly man and a girl about 13 years old.

However, she said this morning that police have not received any missing-persons reports that match up with the case.

Just before the alleged carjacking, the suspect apparently shoplifted some items from the Safeway and then ran out of the store, Watson said.

McCamey was identified as a person of interest in the case after police released images of the shoplifter captured by store cameras and witnesses came forward to report that the person looked like McCamey, who is known to frequent the area around the Safeway.

Watson said law enforcement agencies have had contact with McCamey in the past, and that he has a history of committing thefts.

McCamey is described as black, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighing about 165 pounds.

The suspect in Tuesday’s incident was described as a black man in his 40s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 165 pounds, with salt-and-pepper hair. He was wearing a green shirt, a blue jacket, blue jeans and headphones, police said.

Police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case, and anyone with information is asked to call police at (510) 238-3326 or call 911.

We need less gun control. Stuff like this wouldn’t happen as much.

Beyond Claycord…..

“On the night of November 23, 2012, a black 17-year-old named Jordan Davis and three of his friends stopped at a gas station in Jacksonville to buy cigarettes and gum. The four were allegedly playing music loudly from a Dodge Durango when they were confronted by a 47-year-old white man named Michael Dunn, who was in the car parked next to them. An argument ensued, and Dunn fired six shots into the Durango, killing Davis.

Yesterday, Dunn’s girlfriend Rhonda Rouer testified that Dunn told her “I hate that thug music” before she exited the vehicle to buy potato chips and wine. While Rouer was out of the car, Dunn and Davis began arguing over the volume of the music. One of Davis’ friends, 18-year-old Tevin Thompson, said that he never heard Davis threaten Dunn. He also said that the cars were so close together that neither would have been able to exit their vehicles.

Soon, Dunn fired three shots into the rear passenger door, piercing Davis’ liver and aorta. The next three bullets hit the front passenger door where Thompson was sitting, but deflected off the handle and hinge. The driver of the Durango then fled to an adjacent strip mall, where it became apparent that Davis was dying.

Dunn, meanwhile, returned to his hotel with Rouer, where they made rum and cokes and ordered a pizza. Dunn’s attorney is arguing for his innocence based on Florida’s insane “Stand Your Ground” law, which was written by America’s gun lobby.

Dunn’s attorney says that Dunn thought he saw a gun or lead pipe in the teenagers’ vehicle, though a search of the Durango turned up no weapons. The lawyer’s response to that was to argue that Davis and his friends had enough time to dispose of a weapon, because in Florida it’s always the black teenagers that are looking to kill.”

What’s your point, that someone is lying?.
To much going on to ignore trends, if you
do, it could be fatal, but I could be lying.

These people will be found. The young girl will be recovered alive and scared but untouched.

Period

@anon,
That’s a touching story but if you’re trying to make an argument for gun control, or gun banning, or whatever, it falls short. The truth is, there are always going to be idiots who do bad things. It’s part of the price we pay for freedom. Rendering good people defenseless will never stop those idiots bent on hurting somebody.

And Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law isn’t “insane”. What’s insane are laws that require you to give up all your belongings and run away from criminals, then wait until they shoot at you before you can shoot back.

And last, the “Gun Lobby” doesn’t write laws. Our legislators do. If you don’t like those laws, vote in new legislators.

9 Really? February 11, 2014 at 6:29 PM

@VikingPrincess How ignorant do you people have to be? Or are you related to this crime and know this?? @Anon what does your story have to do with highjacking a car with a minor and elderly person in it?

I’m shocked……..actually I’m not, my brain and initial reaction were once again correct ( about the suspect of course)

11 Momo February 11, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Just got an update on the amber alert. They are saying it is a red 4 door sedan. Same license plate number

Call it wishful thinking if you’d like. Some call it intuition.

If wishing someone well being is ignorant then I have no interest in the narrow window you view.

I happened to look this up last night. In Vancouver BC, with 600k ppl, they had their first murder of the year yesterday. It was a stabbing.

Oakland is 2/3’s the size of Vancouver and has already had 12 homicides this year.

14 NutCreek Frontier February 11, 2014 at 7:05 PM

Prayers for this family; they must be so frightened for their vulnerable young and elderly ones.

15 MadMom February 11, 2014 at 8:09 PM

I received the amber alert and the update. Yes, it’s a text message. Just check your message box if you lost the alert.
I hope they find them alive and well. Prayers and good thoughts.

Oakland? Say it ain’t so…. go figure..

17 VikingPrincess February 11, 2014 at 8:44 PM

Don’t think they are bin Oakland, though. Communication may not be as clear on this as we prefer foe a few more days. Don’t ask why I said this, just intuition. ;)

Why was a 13 year old not in school at 1pm on a Tuesday?

20 Each TV report on this story February 12, 2014 at 2:26 AM

sounds a little fishier than the previous report.

21 Concordanon February 12, 2014 at 6:50 AM

I got 6 freaking alerts throughout last night, I get it, someones missing!

22 Landana February 12, 2014 at 8:00 AM

@ale
There are a number of reasons a 13 year old may not be in school at 1pm.
Sometimes schools are closed for a day around here for teacher stuff, sometimes they have half days, maybe the child was sick and his/her grandfather was taking them to the doctor, maybe a family emergency. Who knows and what does that have to do with the story? Why is it your business?

23 Researcher February 12, 2014 at 8:37 AM

I just checked the CHP website which lists the Amber Alert and it is now saying that it is unclear if the people supposedly carjacked in the Red Infinity were involved in the original attempted theft (Possibly as accomplices?? Would be my guess) or if they were actually carjacked. Was I the only one who thought it was hinky that they changed the “type” of vehicle Red Infinity was? They also have the name of a person on interest listed on the CHP site.

24 @anon February 12, 2014 at 8:55 AM

Post #2 what does your story have to do with any of this? I pray for the victims and their family. The authorities need to contact vickingprincess about information she may have. More than 1/2 the posts appear to come from drug addicts and crazies.

25 Hump Day February 12, 2014 at 9:05 AM

#25, why would you think Viking Princess has any info? Perhaps she’s just stating her opinion which is what people do on a blog.

26 ale February 12, 2014 at 9:36 AM

@Landana
The whole story is pretty fishy. The “victims” had someone else’s plates on their car, nobody has been reported missing, a senior was hanging out in a grocery store parking lot with a kid who should have been in school in the middle if the day on a weekday while a guy the right age to be her father was in the store stealing three lobsters. The evidence all seems to point to no car jacking occuring and frankly I hope no car jacking occurred.

27 something wrong February 12, 2014 at 9:49 AM

Something ain’t right here. If police have the license plate number, they should also know registered owner of the car — why aren’t they giving up that info? They don’t say the car was stolen. No one has reported the alleged “victims” missing. I believe that police have abused the Amber Alert system and have bothered millions of people with this phony alert. I believe that the elderly man in the car was a likely accomplice and was just waiting for the shoplifter to come out of the store.

@ale
I agree its fishy and I don’t really believe it, they would have had names by now.
But I don’t see how a 13 year old out school with an older adult makes it any more or less fishy, that’s the part I find the least odd.

32 VikingPrincess February 12, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Will know more tomorrow more than likely. Don’t think this was thought out at all.

33 Anon February 12, 2014 at 4:40 PM

Whatever you do don’t say he looks like Samuel Jackson!

34 Attrntion; Law Enforcement February 12, 2014 at 4:42 PM

Here’s an Idea. Call DMV, tell them the license number and ask for the address. Go over and ask the resident if they are missing an old man and young girl. From what I’m reading it doesn’t sound like you’ve gotten around to this yet.

35 Walnut Creek Resident February 12, 2014 at 5:32 PM

Now with all the new details that say the people in the car were not abducted over 24 hours later and that the little girl is an adult with no word of the who the elderly male driver is?? Huh.. too many confusing facts with missing information. How can this be? What took so long for the two passengers In their car that has hijacked to tell the authorities or how long was it after the cops knew it was not an abduction. Weird I say!!!

36 VikingPrincess February 12, 2014 at 8:53 PM

Three people and three lobsters. Guy didn’t pay and took off. If the person who reported it thought it was potentially an abduction they’d have to report.
The fact that it is taking so long to clarify is a problem. If we find a false alarm, it might be a bit tiresome to be alerted how many times on phone or whatever to learn someone in oak town stole lobsters for dinner.
Either way. Police will be involved.
