ALERT: NB I-680 Extreme Traffic Hazard

February 9, 2014 13:13 pm · 17 comments

The following information is from a Claycordian who just traveled on NB I-680 just past H-242 in Concord.

The pavement on I-680 northbound is buckling. It has created a large speed-bump across the right 3 lanes, just past the 242 exit/offramp.

Thanks to Chuck Davis for the information! Please drive safely.

“Buckling” typically refers to the pavement heaving like what happens when it’s hot outside and the pavement expands.

Given the ambient temps, the roadway is probably cracking and subsiding.

culvert washing out. Could be a major traffic problem tomorrow.

Matt the Brat,

Came over about 1/2 hour ago and it’s a bump not a cave-in.

I was on northbound 680 from Treat Blvd and just before you go over the Monument Blvd overpass is where the large bumps are.

Thought I got hit with a torpedo

Wonder if CalTrans has any galvanized bolts left over from the Bay Bridge to fix it?

Ok.. thanks for the clarification.

…. pretty weird to happen. I mean for the road to “swell up” and buckle in winter. Yeah our area has expansive clay soils but still.

Must be attributed to the ongoing construction of the new DICK’s store next to the freeway. They must have screwed up again. Stupid dicks!

Good! I-680 hasn’t been any fun at all since they took out the dip coming off the Benicia bridge.

@Cowellian – I miss the 680 SB mogul too. What an awesome bit of road! This doesn’t sound like quite so much fun.

SB mogul: when the kids were little I would speed up and we would all go Wheeee! Great fun.

I highly agree with #11& 12! As a Bay Area native I enjoyed that for years and even my kids (who are now grown) enjoyed that dip!

I went over it earlier and tried to jump the bump but still didnt get any air in my truck 🙁

Ha! Ditto over! My kids used to love the SB 680 dip. It terrified my wife but I had approaching it for maximum “whump” down to a science.

Dorf! “Ditto over HERE”
