The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday at noon!

Today’s question:

Which one do you like better? CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid or Longs?

Talk about it….

Hmmm does Payless no longer exist? I think Rite-Aid took that over, right? And isnt CVS and Longs the same thing but it just goes by CVS?

I would say Walgreens. Their stores are cleaner and generally better stocked. Ever go to the medicine aisles at the CVS in the shopping center on YV and Clayton Road? They are always out of stock of items. Always.

I liked the old Longs song. “Take the Longs way home, Longs belongs to everyone!”

2 ChampagneKitty February 6, 2014 at 12:10 PM

I’ve been shopping at Walgreens for many years.

3 billa February 6, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Longs by a long shot. They were truly a neighborhood company,

4 Fast Eddie February 6, 2014 at 12:20 PM

Longs

5 Mary Fouts February 6, 2014 at 12:23 PM

Unfortunately, Longs no longer exists. The CVS stores are creepy; seemingly dim lighting and questionable employees. As far as Rite Aid, I quit using them years ago when a pharmacy tech informed me they did not have medication in stock to fill a new seizure medication prescription, and asked me “Are you sure you really need this? This is a really expensive medication.” (Response: “Yes, as I would really like to continue to live.”)

So, needless to say, it’s only Walgreens, for better or worse. Ho-hum.

I don’t really like to shop anywhere that requires you to have a “rewards” card to receive the sale price. I have one at Safeway because that’s my go-to grocery store. I didn’t give them my real info when I signed up, though. At least CVS will swipe their card for you if you don’t have one.

7 I Miss Longs February 6, 2014 at 12:30 PM

I miss Longs. the people, the stock, carts with wheels.
CVS is the worst. comparable to a yard sale on Sunday afternoon.

8 anon. February 6, 2014 at 12:30 PM

Captain’s Chest……

9 Longs is out of business February 6, 2014 at 12:33 PM

It no longer exists.

Location determines a lot. The CVS in Clayton is far nicer than the CVS at the Terminal Shopping Center. And I don’t fear for my life in the parking lot in Clayton. But, CVS is an expensive store.

Walgreens is the same. The Walgreens on Gregory in Pleasant Hill is one of the nicest around, The Walgreens downtown Concord is a scary place just because of the other customers.

I have always avoided Rite Aid. Terrible Service, if any at all.

Overall, Walgreens is the first choice, as long as its in a more safe neighborhood.

10 Loooooooongs February 6, 2014 at 12:38 PM

LONGS!

11 Dr. Rx February 6, 2014 at 12:39 PM

Longs,….where they carry all name brands and will order anything you want.

12 @ anon February 6, 2014 at 12:41 PM

hahaha… No Artie’s?

13 Clayton Pete February 6, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Longs!!!

14 Let's be fair here February 6, 2014 at 12:46 PM

CVS in Countrywood has some very nice employees. Downtown South California, however, are not so nice and mostl are mentally challanged. One even falls over in the aisles on many occasions and has a habit of following customers around the store like a puppy.
Don’t bother to ask where anything is, noone knows.

15 Shulla February 6, 2014 at 12:47 PM

Walgreens does not allow panhandlers to beg at the doors, so I go to Walgreens. I have stopped going to many stores because they allow beggars at the door despite my calls to their corporate office. CVS at Clayton & Treat is a dump complete with door beggar.

16 DD February 6, 2014 at 12:52 PM

Walgreens

17 Mr. Pink February 6, 2014 at 1:04 PM

I miss Longs. So as that is no longer a choice, I’ll pick Walgreens. CVS bu-LOWS.

18 Birdman February 6, 2014 at 1:10 PM

If anyone understood the CVS rewards program they would shop there more. By purchasing items in two or more transactions while using store coupons and Manufacture coupons you end up saving. Those extra bucks are free money that a company is giving you to use. On the topic of the Clayton CVS being the best. Must be great to be white and privileged.

19 Charles-the-cat February 6, 2014 at 1:10 PM

The Countrywood CVS had a sign out front yesterday announcing Flu Shots Today and even gave the hours. I went in and was told that they ran out of vaccine days ago. The pharmacy clerk flatly refused to check to find out when more was due. Another time, the pharmacist refused to accept my prescription card even though it was still valid (as I confirmed later). He charged me full price for the prescription and then had the nerve to get pissed when I told him I wanted a receipt. He’d claimed the receipt printer wasn’t working but then suddenly it was. Very odd. (The prescription was something that couldn’t wait. Otherwise I would have gone somewhere else.)

I wish Walgreens was more convenient. I like them. The closest one to me is at the corner of Treat/Geary and Main in WC, which has to be one of the nastiest intersections in the area.

Definitely miss Longs.

20 Yes anon too February 6, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Too bad Longs is gone. I hate CVS, but I keep my prescriptions at the Pharmacy there because they kept the same people from when it was Longs. They’ve always been very helpful and prescriptions get filled quickly.

21 KJ February 6, 2014 at 1:17 PM

I used to go to the Longs a lot, because it always seemed to have what I wanted. CVS almost never has what I am looking for — either it doesn’t carry the item at all, or the shelf is bare — so I rarely shop there even though the location is convenient for me.

22 Forever Longs February 6, 2014 at 1:18 PM

I hate CVS – they are never, ever stocked no matter what store I go to in several different counties. Very limited selection of cleaning products. They do not have good sales and I actually do not like the carpet on the floors. I loved Longs!

23 Anon777 February 6, 2014 at 1:24 PM

Walgreens for sure! I used to like Longs (more expensive than Walgreens though) but have never liked CVS. I also liked Payless before they became RiteAid.

24 If people want to yearn for February 6, 2014 at 1:28 PM

long gone drug stores, what about Rexall and Woolworths? Now your talking about drug stores. And don’t forget the ol’ 5 and dime. Beat the heck out of the Dollar stores now.

25 Zeus February 6, 2014 at 1:29 PM

why buy there ?? their prices are more expensive than target, walmart and costco. People don’t know how to save money

26 Jess February 6, 2014 at 1:30 PM

Long’s was the best. But they no longer exist. I prefer Walgreens to CVS, although I do shop at both. I don’t know how CVS manages to make brand new stores appear rundown. The coupons I get through CVS’s rewards program do come in handy. I save quite a bit when I use them.

27 Dorothy February 6, 2014 at 1:30 PM

Walgreen.

28 Jojo Potato February 6, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Longs got bought by CVS so they are no more. Except in Hawaii where they kept the Longs name since it’s very popular over there. Unfortunately, the Longs HQ building is now being replaced with a 400+ unit apartment/condo complex at the corner of Ygnacio and Civic. Think about that traffic next time you try to get through town. But don’t worry, the city council members all got their cut so it’s got to be good for all of us.

29 Walgreens February 6, 2014 at 2:04 PM

Walgreens.
I hate CVS, stores look crappy, shelfs are never stocked, and god knows where they dig up their staff.

30 Catlady February 6, 2014 at 2:10 PM

I really miss Longs. I much prefer Walgreens to CVS if I need to visit a drugstore, but I tend to use the Walgreens’ in SF more since they are on every corner and close to my job. I still remember Valco in Walnut Creek where the Pyramid Brewery now resides, lol.

31 Amy February 6, 2014 at 2:13 PM

No checkers at CVS and they put their brands on the shelves and you can’t find name brands. At the Concord stores (near BART and the one at Treat) there is always some low life asking for money at the entrance. Not a safe place to shop.

32 ClayDen February 6, 2014 at 2:50 PM

Longs was the best. As of last summer, they are still called Longs in Hawaii, even though they are really CVS. The quality of the employees at CVS varies; there are some that seem like they would have trouble finding the floor with both hands.

33 Walnut Creek Resident February 6, 2014 at 2:52 PM

Longs was first class. CVS will never measure up to their wonderful
customer service, products, deals and even the interior design was
beautiful. I miss Longs very much and I have to tolerate Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens. No comparison at all.

34 Arent there some locally owned pharmacies February 6, 2014 at 2:57 PM

that we should be promoting? The staff at Bacon East has always taken great care of me. Let’s hear about some others…..

35 nytemuvr February 6, 2014 at 2:58 PM

Bring Bill’s Drugs back. They were sold to Longs and the CVS acquired Longs. Bring back PayLess too.

36 anonares February 6, 2014 at 3:00 PM

Reading the posts above, I realize that most of us really miss Long’s Drugs. Most of us don’t like CVS either. I have the same complaints about items that we have been purchasing over a period of time are never available in the 3 choices listed above. I order “specialty items”, which are not special at all, online. I am mostly shopping at Walgreens and one of the reasons is that the store near me doesn’t sell liquor, period. There is a nicer calmer atmosphere in the store and parking lot.

37 LoriR February 6, 2014 at 3:02 PM

I loved Longs and Payless, Walgreens is now my favorite, really don’t like CVS

38 LONGS (1); Thrifty (2)-ice cream February 6, 2014 at 3:05 PM

I LOVED Longs! -had great grocery specials; -individual stores had different items (Clayton had books) – had specials on plants/flowers – employees were great

Dislike CVS! – Carpet! How are they cleaning the germs from all the sick people off their carpet?! -PAPER! They give you 3 ft. of paper with every receipt! – stock is not so great -few toys – no quality books – grocery items are high priced and sparse -employees are not too great

Thrifty! I miss them and their ice cream! Even though you can get their ice cream at Rite-Aid, the ice cream counter is not manned and stocked and priced like Thrifty did it.

39 ILostMyJobCuzOfObamacare February 6, 2014 at 3:55 PM

T G & Y!!!!

40 mika February 6, 2014 at 4:00 PM

Loved Longs!
Do not like CVS, hate the carpeting throughout the store.

41 mutts February 6, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Never had a problem with CVS employees, the rest of the store sucks. We all miss Longs

42 it's mE!! (original) February 6, 2014 at 4:54 PM

Uhh i hate CVS there employess and staff or whatever you call it are soo rude and I mostly shop at Walgreens or Target for medicine, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, sunscreen and those kind of things and rite aid is really far away from where I live,In conclusion I think we all miss longs what a great store with such good bargains.

43 claycordian February 6, 2014 at 5:24 PM

Longs by a BIG margin! Do not like what CVS has become……

44 Chester E. Kitty February 6, 2014 at 5:25 PM

Longs hands down!!! Wish they were still around. I hate CVS … and who puts carpet in a drug store???!!! Dumb!

45 bigjim February 6, 2014 at 5:42 PM

Loved Longs. CVS disappoints every time I’m there. Rite Aid seems to be the best alternative.

46 No. 1 February 6, 2014 at 6:52 PM

Best drug store around is “BURNS DRUG STORE” in La Jolla, CA.
Grew up there and it was and still is top notch! Rexall was second best

47 Girl w/ dogs February 6, 2014 at 6:57 PM

Longs was amazing, I miss it!!

48 Baby Boomer February 6, 2014 at 7:18 PM

REXALL

49 TFF FAN February 6, 2014 at 8:47 PM

Definitely LONGS!!!

50 We LOVED Long's. February 6, 2014 at 8:57 PM

They really had everything. My mom and I used to have outings to Long’s in Oakland at 51st & Broadway. We don’t go to any of the others. No need. I’d go 50 miles out. Of my way to go to Long’s again. People tell me I must “get over it” and “move on”. I can’t.

51 it's mE!! (original) February 6, 2014 at 9:00 PM

Longs please come back!!!

52 Fritzhugh Ludlow February 6, 2014 at 9:18 PM

Thrifty’s was the best….They had records, rolling papers, the Ice cream counter, a Fishing Dept. and a bulb tester to test the bulbs in Your Television and Radio.

53 Shelly February 6, 2014 at 10:53 PM

I went to Long’s because they had it all. Their employees stayed for years if not decades. Since no other drug store compares, CVS being the worst, I get my meds from KP or Costco, and make many other products myself instead of buying them.

54 it's mE!! (original) February 6, 2014 at 10:53 PM

Good thing long’s still exists in Hawaii so we could always visit it right ppl??

55 Antler February 6, 2014 at 11:19 PM

Marianne, now you’ve gone and made me want one of Thrifty’s mint chocolate cones! And that leads to remembering back when the Eggo frozen waffle brand was still owned by the San Jose originators (think waffles made with fresh eggs and not loaded with salt and chemicals)…which takes me to the late Golden State Diary there and their delicious vanilla ice cream balls rolled in freshly-grated coconut.

56 Dr. Jellyfinger February 6, 2014 at 11:41 PM

Oh! that reminds me, I have a box of Ghiradelli “Intense Dark” Chocolate infused with Blackberry & Grape. I eat two squares each day & wash it down with some red wine (it’s like heroin but it’s supposed to be good for me). Cheers!

57 Dr. Jellyfinger® February 7, 2014 at 12:07 AM

Dinner? oh geez! I knew I forgot something……….. I went straight from happy hour to cocktail hour to the after dinner appertif, & midnight brandy. Dinner……. oh here we go…. fried chicken & watermelon! They were tossing out like 500 lbs of it behind Carondolet High School this morning.

58 ??? February 7, 2014 at 12:16 AM

Agh!! Thrifty’s !!! Chocolate malty crunch !!!!:)want!!!!

59 RanchgirlCA February 7, 2014 at 5:32 AM

Longs, but now I go to Target. Its cheaper.

60 The Mamba February 7, 2014 at 7:38 AM

They are all pretty much the same to me. I go to a Walgreens near my office nearly every day, but CVS is nice as well.

61 Jacknife February 7, 2014 at 8:05 AM

LONGS!!!!! Walgreens is the next best but the longs stores where much better then ANY CVS store

62 Cowellian February 7, 2014 at 8:35 AM

I never cared for CVS at all, and Rite-Aid is on my permanent do-not-shop list. Walgreens isn’t bad, but Longs was my favorite when we were in California. Now, my prescriptions come in the mail, and everything else comes from Walmart or Costco.

63 janie February 7, 2014 at 10:20 AM

LONGS BUT SINCE THEY ARE GONE FOR SURE IT WOULD BE WALGREENS. I WOULD NEVER GO IN A CVS. I WENT TO THEM WHEN LONGS LEFT ON CONTRA COSTA AND TURNED INTO CVS AND THE EMPLOYEES WERE RUDE AND THE MGR WAS A JERK. IF I HAD BLOOD POURING OUT OF ME I WOULD NOT GO TO CVS.

64 concord February 7, 2014 at 7:36 PM

Longs for sure. CVS is horrible and over-priced and they don’t carry good stuff. Don’t care for any of the rest of them either. Usually end up at Walgreen’s by my work since of late. Rite-Aid not much better and way overpriced. Shopping retail in Concord is becoming more difficult. I’m really bummed OSH was bought out by Home Depot too. Safeway is SUckway so there really is no place to Shop for groceries in Concord unless you want to put up with all the losers in the Food Maxx shopping center. I guess I’ll try that grocery store by K-MART and see if it is any good.
