A San Ramon youth pastor has been arrested after allegedly hiding two 17-year-old runaways at his home and having a sexual relationship with one of them, police said today.

Hyo Bin Im, 33, also known as Pastor John Hyobin at the Contra Costa Korean Presbyterian Church in San Ramon, was arrested last Wednesday, police said.

He was charged in Contra Costa County Superior Court on Tuesday with unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment and animal cruelty, according to the district attorney’s office.

Im was taken to county jail in Martinez and later released on $180,000 bail.

San Ramon police Lt. Tom LaRocque said Im was housing two 17-year-old girls who were reported missing from San Mateo County around the beginning of the year.

The youth pastor first met the girls at the San Francisco Salvation Army Korean Corps in 2010, LaRocque said.

Police said they found evidence at the home that the suspect had a sexual relationship with one of the teens.

LaRocque said investigators also found a small dog at the home suffering from a broken femur as well as prior injuries believed to have been inflicted by Im. The injuries were so severe that the dog had to be euthanized, he said.

Investigators said Im claims to be affiliated with The Living Well Ministries, which police said is an alleged nonprofit Im created to assist widows, the homeless and emancipated orphans.

He has worked at the Contra Costa Korean Presbyterian Church since 2012, according to Jason Jeon, the church’s senior pastor.

Jeon said the church is “totally shocked” and “heartbroken” to hear about the charges against Im.

“We don’t know what’s happening,” he said. “We’re hoping the truth will come out soon. We are praying for John and those girls.”

Police are investigating the possibility that Im may have victimized other youths.

Any additional victims or anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Ramon police Detective Rob Ransom (925) 973-2715.

Very sad story. No excuses. The animal cruelty part is ridiculous. What an awful person. BUT, whether he is a Christian or not, he is human and not perfect. None of us are. The fact that he is a, “pastor,” makes this sound worse and perhaps it is. But people, make no mistake about it, it doesnt matter who you are or what your religion affiliation is. We are all a bunch of imperfect sinners. Clearly, some are worse than others.

A youth minister. Make no bones about it, it’s always the ones that put themselves in a job where they can have access to vulnerable children. @1, No, he is not perfect, we all have our faults, but most decent people would not have a sexual relationship with a minor. He’s supposed to be a youth pastor of a Church!!!
If this guy is found guilty then he will be a registered sex offender. This guy makes me sick……

sexually abusing teenage girls and abusing a dog? the damnable bleeding hearts can call this a life style if they want. I call it insane behavior of a demented creep. There is no treatment to cure this freaks behavior. His death is the only solution.

There is a special corner of Hell for people like this…..

5 CreepinReligiousClothing February 6, 2014 at 12:41 PM

I’m glad they put a stop to this guy’s creepy actions. Sexually abusing girls and abusing animals, WHAT A CREEP! Hope they lock him up. Too many of these types around. Glad they are getting caught. DISGUSTING!

This is not an “imperfect sinner”. This is a monster. Evil. Not human (by my standards at least).
Just toss him over a cliff and have done with it.

7 TC February 6, 2014 at 12:48 PM

I feel horrible for the helpless dog. The girls on the other hand obviously put themselves into that position running away from home. I’m sure both of the girls are old enough to realize what they were doing. Don’t really have sympathy for them just the dog.

Hang Im High (but break his femur first)

9 VikingPrincess February 6, 2014 at 1:15 PM

I’m glad the authorities are putting his picture up for others to see. If he is also responsible for the dog- I think he’s been doing this for quite some time. Hopefully he doesn’t have children if this is.

Either way, would not be surprised if other people show up. Might be good I’d they took this National and International. He’s young buy there is something telling me he has done this before and might have been raised like this….we will see

Umm – so what lifestyle are you referring to exactly that encourages sexual abuse of teenage girls and animal abuse?

Time for you to put down your crack pipe and take a nap.

The Devil made him do it.

12 Anon777 February 6, 2014 at 1:28 PM

Another one? Every week I see another news story about another pedophile molesting children. We need to start village square executions and maybe we can rid society of this scum.

13 Dorothy February 6, 2014 at 1:29 PM

So #1, if he was a priest he should be in jail but since he’s a pastor he is “only human?” Good grief! All molesters should be in jail regardless of what their title might be.

14 @ Jet February 6, 2014 at 1:31 PM

catch up with the news and until you do, keep your comments to yourself.

15 Bruce February 6, 2014 at 1:31 PM

People like this, including Catholic priests who molest kids should not be allowed to get bail. They should be locked up until the trial. Also, once the allegations are proven, they should stay in jail for 5 to 10 years. They will get free housing, free food, free cable tv, and all the sex they don’t want. Maybe after that God will forgive them.

16 Clayton Pete February 6, 2014 at 1:33 PM

Yes, it’s the animal abuse that clinches it. No decent person could ever do anything like that. It goes beyond… heck, I have no words. Just awful stuff.

17 typical concord resident February 6, 2014 at 1:39 PM

I’m sure he must have forced the girl into it. 17 year olds do NOT have any interest in sex! Sick monster! The gas chamber is too good for him!

18 JET February 6, 2014 at 1:43 PM

@ #14 – nice way to answer by not providing any answer in your post…..idiot. Address my question or don’t reply at all.

My question again was “what lifestyle are you referring to exactly that encourages sexual abuse of teenage girls and animal abuse?”

19 Mark February 6, 2014 at 1:51 PM

What is an “alleged victim”? The police are not searching for alleged victims. They are searching for victims. If you want to say “Pastor Douchebag is the alleged perpetrator”, or “Pastor Douchebag allegedly raped a dog and abused a pre-teen boy” then that’s fine, but a victim is a victim.

@17,

Back when I was in high school, 17 – year old girls were obsessed with sex. Just because none of them are interested in YOU, don’t assume they’re not interested.

21 Grob February 6, 2014 at 2:29 PM

Actually GOD made him do it. He is a child of GOD, just like the rest of the Christians. Child molestation is nothing new in the Christian and Catholic religions. God forgives all, even child molesters…right Christians?

22 aannoonn February 6, 2014 at 2:37 PM

The only positive thing I can find in this is the fact that he will eventually have to stand before a just and holy God and be held accountable for his actions!

23 Cartman February 6, 2014 at 2:40 PM

Boil him.

24 Incognito February 6, 2014 at 2:46 PM

The sad part is, people put these people “of God” on pedestals and, the truth is, they often times are the worst human beings on earth.

25 What? February 6, 2014 at 2:57 PM

What is an emancipated orphan? Isn’t that a bit of a conflict? Can orphan’s become emancipated?

26 oldman February 6, 2014 at 3:17 PM

@Grob
You are the exception to God’s mercy

27 Blame the Victim??? Agiain??? February 6, 2014 at 3:18 PM

@TC, so when you’re at your lowest low, and who knows what or who they ran away from, you go to someone you think you can trust, and be safe? Then she gets raped? and you blame Her??? And he took advantage of someone at their lowest and vulnerable. And is a person by the Church with a title of Youth Minister????? Unbelievable you would blame the victim, but we are a blame the victim kind of society. Must have been their fault, because it never happened to me??? What the??? And I hope this church get sued for every dollar they have and then some, and put out of business, and give the money to the victim in hopes of having a normal life. Because they bare some responsibility for this to happen imo.

“The girls on the other hand obviously put themselves into that position running away from home. I’m sure both of the girls are old enough to realize what they were doing. Don’t really have sympathy for them just the dog.”

Excuse me?? These girls “put” themselves in this situation?? By trusting a Youth minister of a Church that was supposed to help them? You do no know what their lives were like or what they were running away from. More than likely an abusive home life.
It’s attitudes like yours that makes many people look the other way while the abusers can carry out their sick deeds. Blame the victim mentality. I suppose you think that if a teenage boy runs away and turns to an organization for help and then gets abused is a real victim. You sicken me….

30 Silva February 6, 2014 at 3:36 PM

WOW. Good thing he was caught. So sorry for his victims.

31 hey people, TC is a troll. February 6, 2014 at 3:41 PM

You can find “it” on the recent article on the award for Women Against Rape. Ignore it. It’s trying to pi$$ us off. Ignore it and it will go away.

32 Sad February 6, 2014 at 3:45 PM

This sickens me. To think he was a youth pastor, preying on the kids. If you can’t even feel safe at church……

33 Grob February 6, 2014 at 4:57 PM

This is why I am not comfortable with my kids around religious people. Church and God teach their believers to perform child molestation and other atrocities. These religious people perform serious crimes, including molesting children, but all they have to do is ask for forgiveness and they are holy again.

All you religious people reading this…you’re just like this guy who got caught, close-minded and dangerous. Science is our new religion and someday, maybe in a hundred years, religion will be a thing of the past.

34 Class of 90 CVHS February 6, 2014 at 5:04 PM

@dorthy. Sweetie, don’t put words in my mouth. I don’t care what his title is. It was wrong. And yes, he’s an imperfect human like every one of us.

35 Gus February 6, 2014 at 5:47 PM

Grob, “closed minded and dangerous,” you do realize that your comment makes you sound like a nut right? Not a big fan of religion myself but, you are spooky, hearing voices spooky. Please tell me you don’t own a gun.

36 Red Headed Left Handed Inuit February 6, 2014 at 6:48 PM

The neighbors and church members should get a 55 gallon drum. Put him in the drum with 10 gallons of vinegar and enough cabbage to make a really good kim chee. Seal him up. Put him in basement for a month. Take the barrel to Carondelet and tell them this is what we Korean Christians do with our priests and serve him to the Catholics. A good time was had by all and it would not impact many folks since there is no Korean or Catholic or Abuser month that I know of.

37 Cat Wrangler February 6, 2014 at 6:51 PM

:( Very, very sad.

38 sam February 6, 2014 at 7:04 PM

@ #1 GILBERT: you must be this jerks friend or relative or you are just another, abusive, fellow scumbag.

39 O GOD February 6, 2014 at 7:16 PM

You know what’s even scarier? Knowing their are hundreds if not thousands more of these church like people molesting children as we speak. All under the disguise of “minister” or “priest”.

40 sam February 6, 2014 at 8:15 PM

There is no speculation or conjecture, the severe abuse this scum subjected upon his pet; this is blatant indication, of his no less than abhorant, “criminal” profile, ie, abusing, taking advantage of someone and/or something, that is in a compromised state, dependent upon his protection, ie, beat his pet, take advantage of a minor, all of which makes no difference to malicious perps.

41 Gilbert February 6, 2014 at 8:47 PM

@sam. Those are large assumptions you’re making. I’m neither. This guy is a jerk for what he’s done and has issues and will pay the price as he should. Often on this site you see a lot of self righteous people that kick and bad mouth others. I choose not to do that. You on the other hand….

44 sam February 7, 2014 at 2:29 PM

@gilbert.. i usually just “speak my peace”, on these topics, then “leave it at that”, it was not my intention to malign your character, its just, when I read that someone has abused a helpless soul, be it that of a infant/child, animal, souls that we are entrusted to safeguard, it just gets my brain, “into a full head of steam”; I am very well aware, there are strong proponents who live by the gospel teachings, “hate the sin, love the sinner”; as each and every soul is seperate and magically unique, by its very existance, each soul perceives every situation differently. Personally, my soul deems most sins to be potentially forgivable, but their are some sins, I designate, in the “wicked file”, these, immeasurable sins can really, “stick in my craw”!!! Maybe, if this Pastor “John” person had beaten you “to death”, as his pet’s phsycial injuries were so extensive or this Pastor “John” had beaten “to death” someone or something you love, just maybe, you would not be so quick, “out of the starting gate”, to post your “forgiving spin”, on his heinous act(s); ie, the Mayor of Claycord first posted this aforementioned topic at 12:09 pm, you had your aforementioned response composed and posted, by 12:13 pm. 4 minutes, your pretty fast, I apologized for making presumptuous remarks, at the opening of this retort so I will refrain, from falling into that same trap.
