Winter Storms throughout the Country, Heavy Usage Cause Donor Blood Shortage

Blood Centers of the Pacific officials said this week that bad weather across the country and heavy use at local hospitals are creating a critical blood shortage in the Bay Area.

While the Bay Area normally imports around 30 percent of its blood from outside the state, other areas have been unable to share recently due to heavy winter storms, spokeswoman Lisa Bloch said.

There is a particular shortage of type O negative blood, known as the “universal donor type,” which can be given to anyone in an emergency, Bloch said.

As of Wednesday, Blood Centers of the Pacific, the region’s largest blood center, had only around one-third the amount of type O negative it needs to serve local hospitals, Bloch said.

Those who want to give blood should go to www.bloodheroes.com to make an appointment.

My husband is O negative and is willing to donate, but the website listed is just a search engine. Where can he actually go to?

But please, no matter what your blood type, please donate if you can, as really ALL blood types are needed. Just to make sure you (and they) don’t unnecessarily waste time filling out forms which then show you are not a suitable donor, you may always telephone the sponsoring collection agency and list the Rx medications you take so that they can check the permitted-Rx list.

Search using the phrase “universal blood type” and select the American Red Cross link…..excellent explanation and chart of blood types.

There is a Red Cross location in Pleasant Hill off of Gregory Ln.

I donate blood all the time and go to Blood Center of the Pacific. Unfortunately, they just closed their Walnut Creek donor center. The next closest one is in Antioch. They have a blood mobile that may come into Claycord occasionally but I meet up with them now at Children’s hospital Oakland. You can also contact Red Cross.

I give blood at Blood Centers of the Pacific religiously. Just donated this past Tuesday night. After having an EXTREMELY bad incident with the shrew at Walnut Creek, we decided to follow the donation bus instead. They have lots of donation sites. Tuesday was at Los Medanos College. They are appearing in Martinez-on Center Street in March. FABULOUS staff….EXCEPT for the SF office which backs pathetic people like that shrew in Walnut Creek…but I understand she’s been let go-should have happened years ago…now, they have closed that office-could be the shrew ran everyone off.
