Concord Police Arrest Attempted Murder Suspect – One Suspect Still on the Run

January 21, 2014 11:35 am · 49 comments

Concord Police have arrested one of the two attempted murder suspects who they say shot a man outside of the Wendy’s fast-food restaurant on Monument Blvd. in Concord on January 10, 2014.

The suspect, identified by police as 17-year-old Rafael Zaragoza, was arrested without incident in the city of San Francisco by Concord Police Detectives on Friday night. During his arrest, police say two firearms (one reported stolen) and illegal drugs packaged for sale were seized. Zaragoza was transported to Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall after booking at the Concord Police Department, and remains in-custody.

Gustavo Mendez has not yet been apprehended and is still actively being sought by law enforcement, police said.

Mendez should be considered armed and dangerous.

I’ll keep my eye out for a guy with a scrotely mustache, neck tat and long flowing locks that are well conditioned.

2 RAPIDRATE January 21, 2014 at 12:24 PM

No AMNESTY!!

3 Local January 21, 2014 at 12:41 PM

I wouldn’t doubt that he is probably in Mexico already.

4 Reality says... January 21, 2014 at 1:03 PM

Wild guess…Mexico maybe?

5 Horse'n Around January 21, 2014 at 1:16 PM

Gang member. Probably hiding out with his familia.

6 just1dering January 21, 2014 at 1:25 PM

Enough already, time for society to take matters into our own hands.
Armed neighborhood watch programs, shoot first, ask questions later

Thank God he was arrested! Now the victims family can have some relief. he got what he deserves and should be charged as an adult. Anyone else agree?

8 Anon2you January 21, 2014 at 1:37 PM

Look around Mohr Lane behind 7-11, he is probably ‘huffing’ back there…

9 Anonymous January 21, 2014 at 1:44 PM

Probably in concord not far from the crime scene hiding out in a friends house

10 There.... I said it January 21, 2014 at 1:54 PM

Concord is the new Los Angeles. When will the feel good bureaucrats and NAU social engineers realize that their ideals and plans for “We the People” are not working?

The three dots (tattoo) near Gustavo’s left eye will probably be easier to spot if you see him up close and personal.

For those wondering, that tattoo represents the saying “”Mi Vida Loca,” (“My Crazy Life”) or, possibly, the holy trinity. http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/photogallery/prison-tattoo-field-guide.html?curPhoto=3

12 Silva January 21, 2014 at 2:10 PM

@The Mamba; HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!! Scrotely !!! HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAA. !!

13 Julie January 21, 2014 at 2:15 PM

He’s hiding out somewhere. One down, one to go.

14 TC January 21, 2014 at 2:17 PM

He’s only 17 years old give him a break. Remember when you were 17? We all did stupid things we regret.. I don’t think jail should be an option for young kids. He just needs guidance.

15 Sure January 21, 2014 at 2:35 PM

@TC, ok when they find him, we’ll send him over to your house for a couple a weeks so you can give him some guidance….

16 The Professor January 21, 2014 at 2:42 PM

@ TC
Go away troll! We all did stupid things at 17 but how many tried to kill someone? Your thinking is a stupid thing that I regret.

17 Just me January 21, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Maybe if we build more low income housing we can encourage more gangs to come to concord and they can all wipe eachother out.

18 Hope January 21, 2014 at 2:57 PM

I hope they have the right person and conclusive evidence
he , they are the guilty party’s .

19 JET January 21, 2014 at 3:00 PM

@TC #14:

You are correct, we all did stupid things when we were young.
But then again, I don’t think my underage drinking or sneaking into the movie theater without paying would rank up there with attempted murder.

Your argument is ridiculous. Their behavior is NOT typical kid-like behavior. They are ghetto thugs who are dangerous. They need to be prosecuted as adults.

20 NoMoreFreeRide January 21, 2014 at 3:00 PM

Well done CPD. How long until the comments are turned off on this thread? Let all the Liberals whine about how we should be nice to these two loser!

21 @ TC January 21, 2014 at 3:24 PM

You are indeed a funny individual.

What the kid needed, a long time ago, was a few trips to the woodshed.

Now? A bullet between the eyes would be appropriate.

Let your heard bleed for these scum, most of us were not criminals at 17. This dumb ba$tard made a choice, now he has to live with it…

22 Cuppa Coffee January 21, 2014 at 3:25 PM

Nice work, Concord police detectives. That’s the way to have a nice time in The City!!!

Naval Weapons station property is the place this will happen

29 Atticus Thraxx January 21, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Good number of you want to engage on the same behavior your mad at the kid about. Glad I don’t have to deal with all you gunslingers wanting to shoot him. And we wonder why we have a gun violence epidemic.

30 J. January 21, 2014 at 4:21 PM

The Latin Fabio.

31 anon January 21, 2014 at 4:44 PM

I hope the ballistics from the guns prove that they were involved in the shooting on one of the fruit streets last year.

32 Danielle January 21, 2014 at 5:08 PM

I’m glad one was arrested. Time to find the other guy before he repeats his criminal acts and kills someone.

33 sam January 21, 2014 at 5:36 PM

If it wasn’t for our very necessary law enforcement agencies, officers always at the ready, 24/7, no law biding citizen would be able to live in any relative safety.

34 Cassandra January 21, 2014 at 5:39 PM

If Concord Police Detectives found one guy on a Friday night in SF, they’ll find the other guy. It’s only a matter of time.

Book ‘em Danno!

To all good citizens, who hold in high esteem, the dire and significant principles, of virtue and service; please check out the Claycord, January 10th, 8a.m. posting. thank you.

36 Harsh Reality January 21, 2014 at 6:37 PM

In the last several months there have been several
shootings by 12 and 13 year old children.
Resulting in several injuries and a couple deaths.
How should this impact the shooting of a 13 year old,
Who was the size of an average man, carrying a
frightfully real looking assault weapon?
When will we get together and ban these” toys”,
And when will parents wise up, stand up and tell
their child ” NO”. This is not an appropriate toy!

37 Anon January 21, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Don’t worry US law says any illegal alien doesn’t have to be held, under any circumstances. Thank you bleeding heart libtards.

38 not too savy January 21, 2014 at 10:00 PM

@sam #35, how would one look that up withought looking at all story titles between here and there?

39 Silva January 22, 2014 at 9:12 AM

@anon #24; Thanks! Don’t see the relativity to anything else here, nevertheless, thanks!

I remember this guy from school. He was a square in school and im glad he is in jail. He’s probably going to be in pc because having known him i can tell you he is not going to last in general pop. If he does stay in general pop he’s probably going to be holding someones pocket.

42 @ Anon 41 January 22, 2014 at 10:04 AM

Not all of us speak “Wal-Mart”…”square”? I don’t even want to know what “holding someone’s pocket” means.

43 Idiocracy January 22, 2014 at 11:02 AM

Hang em high! We do need to bring back public executions! Once you witness that you’ll think twice before you kill someone! Enough of the PC garbage or cruel and unusual drivel, time to bring hangings back. Plus its cheap and effective. Set one up on monument where they sell Christmas trees. Leave the bodies to rot for a lil too

44 Shelly January 22, 2014 at 1:00 PM

Hey, People! I’m pretty sure TC #14 was beinc facetious.

45 scotty be January 22, 2014 at 8:51 PM

@Anon, Are you saying only people from low housing are trouble,Wake up

46 Silva January 23, 2014 at 9:45 AM

During my years growing up in Lafayette I can assure everyone; the upper middle class produces their share of delinquents & criminals.

47 concord4life January 24, 2014 at 6:26 PM

48 Matthew January 24, 2014 at 7:09 PM

@ Silva—-46

You said in another post you were from Oakland. People from Oakland are people too.

Lying about where you’re from is sad.

49 Cowellian January 24, 2014 at 7:38 PM

You’ve got to admit, TC did a pretty damn good job of encouraging conversation.
