Another “Spare the Air” Day Issued for Sunday Jan. 19

Today’s Bay Area-wide wood-burning ban will remain in effect on Sunday, Bay Area Air Quality Management District officials announced today.

Sunday will be the 29th Winter Spare the Air day of the season, with Bay Area residents once again prohibited from lighting up fireplaces, bonfires, wood-burning stoves or other wood-burning sources.

Air district officials say a dry, stagnant weather system that has settled over the Bay Area will cause air pollution to rise to unhealthy levels on Sunday.

During still, dry winter weather, harmful pollution from wood smoke stays trapped closer to the ground where people are more likely to be exposed to it, according to the air district.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of Bay Area residents in putting the health of their community first and not burning wood,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the air district.

Burning wood during a Winter Spare the Air day is illegal except in homes where wood burning is the sole heat source.

First-time violators of the ban are given the option of taking a wood smoke awareness class or paying a $100 fine. Second and third-time violators will be required to pay $500 or more.

The public is asked to check the daily burn status before burning wood during the Winter Spare the Air season, which runs from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28. The burn status can be found online at www.baaqmd.gov or www.sparetheair.org, by calling (877) 4-NO-BURN or via Spare the Air iPhone and Android apps.

do we get a finders fee for turning our neighbors?

For everyone who is sure to poo-poo this, I regularly fly over the Bay Area and the air quality is extremely poor. It’s hard to tell from the ground but it presently looks like the entire east and south bay is blanketed in a dark fog which is actually smog.

Spare me the hot air.

4 Let us breath January 19, 2014 at 7:26 AM

Our air is not unlike the water in W.Virginny.
Growing up in L.A. the air was yellow brown.
We didn’t have snow days, we had smog days.
That’s when those damn nazi air quality nuts
said enough is enough!
Thank goodness they did. This no burn is
not an attack on personal freedom, but
burning on days like this is a slap in the face
to everybody.

So, stop flying over so much. Planes pollute too, you know.

Another classic evasive response to add to the list.

@pilot Don’t think it’s fires causing the air quality issue. It other things which BAAQMD does not address as they are more difficult than asking someone not to burn a piece of wood. It’s been near 70 degrees for two weeks, nobody has been burning wood and the air quality is bad. BAAQMD is wasting our money, money that could be put to better use for something else.

Flying planes, jets, oil refineries, cars … The burning of petroleum products is the reason we have spare the air days. It has nothing to do with using wood to heat your home. Wood burning to heat homes acounts for less than 10% of winter air pollution. If wood burning was banned in the bayarea there would still be spare the air days just like the summer. And people will do just as they do on summer spare the air. Nothing!

Today is spare the air and also one of the biggest BBQ days of the year. Tri tip in the smoker, cold beer on ice and some apple pie for later.
If you would like to see the real reason the air is bad check out the freeways, airports and refineries today. Their all going full bore!

I have some tree branches banging against the house. It can’t be the wind.. BAAQMD and Lord Broadbent have forbidden the wind to blow today….

Time to burn some tires and turn on all my hoses full blast! Screw you Lord Broadbent and Gov. Brown!

15 Bobfshed January 19, 2014 at 11:41 AM

If you use gasoline or diesel, use natural gas, fly in a plane or use electricity, bbq… you are the reason there is a spare the air day.

In sharp contrast to your comment, which added so much to the conversation.

Yes Broncos Won. Had some chicken and ribs on the pit, then kept the fire going just because it was nice. Not wanting the niners to win but its cool if they do because the Broncos will take care of them :)
