Good lord! What a day in Concord!

We live in the Alhambra Valley in Martinez, but I grew up in Concord, and went to Clayton Valley in the 70′s.

What has happened to Concord (certain areas anyway) is sad.

to the throat.

Not a fun day in Concord.

CPD has done an incredible job today and they continue to do so.

Get the illegal guns on off the street, that will solve a lot of this crime. That cannot be accomplished by restricting legal gun owners. Criminals don’t follow laws.

I deliver in the monument corridor (as well as north concord and detroit) and I always worry when I’m down here. If you guys see a red civic with a round table sign speeding down there or Lacey Lane area, I’m not trying to stick around ;) stuff like this keeps me on my toes.

9 CalKid January 10, 2014 at 6:21 PM

Was on my way to the drive through just as this was going down. Missed it by about 3 minutes. When I pulled in there were only 2 cars but by the time fI was able to turn around out of the drive-through lane there were 12+ cars with more coming. So glad I was delayed a few minutes leaving work otherwise would have been right in the middle of it…. Told my husband I’m not going to that Wendys for him no matter how much he craves a dang frosty!

Counting my blessings…

10 Stayin Home January 10, 2014 at 6:22 PM

WTH is going on?? So scary. Have locked the doors and will be staying home tonight. Thank you Mayor for updating!

11 Eddie spaghetti January 10, 2014 at 6:23 PM

I moved away from Concord in 1997 and Monument Blvd was bad back then………. I can’t imagine what it’s like now.

12 Skwebbette January 10, 2014 at 6:24 PM

Listening to the police scanner now. Crazy stuff!

13 calkid January 10, 2014 at 6:29 PM

this says status of victim unknown… but when I was there he pretty much looked dead… I didn’t see anyone working on him but did see someone move the body by the arm and it came off the curb in a very limp way… Not saying he is dead but really looked that way to me and I was pretty close. could have taken a pic but I don’t have a cell phone. Now I hear the helicopters over head. crazy – definitely stay away from the area!

I’ll drive the other direction to get dinner tonight or just stay home and have cereal!

14 Cracky McGee January 10, 2014 at 6:31 PM

Gang activity going down in the hood …. I’m guessing retaliation from the earlier shooting incident … Thankful to hear CPD is alert & taking care of business!

15 Datsonetallgirl January 10, 2014 at 6:34 PM

The scanner feed is nuts! Did they just say second suspect

16 Mom2Boys January 10, 2014 at 6:37 PM

Police scanner says they have 2 suspects in custody

listening to the scanner they are trying to find the vic’s next of kin ,,, never a good sign

21 Chill out people January 10, 2014 at 6:48 PM

What is going on with Concord? It has turned into a war zone overnight. The police simply do not have the numbers to deal with problems like this.

Call in the national guard and lets deport some of these drug dealing hispanics who are shooting our family members.

22 Just saying January 10, 2014 at 6:49 PM

So the suspects are basically beaners in beanies?

23 jay January 10, 2014 at 6:50 PM

at 6:15 I Was across the street picking up chinese food and saw a guy running across the street. He said he was in the bathroom and heard a shooting and ran out.
There were about 10 cop cars and a fire truck. There is police tape all around wendys parking lot.

24 Nearby January 10, 2014 at 6:55 PM

We work on Monument and there were over 10 police cars. Ambulance left with the light on inside. They have the whole area in lockdown including local residences. Stay inside!

25 Wow January 10, 2014 at 6:57 PM

This is insane 2 shooting is one day.

26 Anonamouse January 10, 2014 at 6:58 PM

I hope the police use the dogs when they catch the suspects.

27 Concord Mike January 10, 2014 at 7:01 PM

Prayers for the victim. Justice for the perp.

http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Concord-California.html

Just to keep this in perspective, Concord has a crime rate that continues to be lower than the state and national average, and most violent crimes in this town are committed by offenders who know the victim personally.

28 gonzo January 10, 2014 at 7:04 PM

so sad to see our neighborhood destroyed by criminals. i hope one day the city will come evict all these losers who unfortunately inhabit this area .

32 anon January 10, 2014 at 7:18 PM

One shooting in a lifetime would be too much. But two shootings that are presumed murders in the same afternoon? As the community begins to ask why I have to ask why we encourage a culture through movies, games, music and TV which promotes that a good dispute resolution technique is to shoot the offender. So, really, what do we expect?

33 Krystle January 10, 2014 at 7:19 PM

Glad I am out of town crazy crazy monument is bad where is the gun law? I’m always scared driving through monument anytime of the day.

When I drove by the Wendy’s about five minutes ago there were at least 12 police cars. How scary. Hope the guy that was shot will be okay. That’s a little to close for comfort.

36 funny man January 10, 2014 at 7:28 PM

is it safe to leave the house for dinner yet? eh maybe ill just get a pizza delivered…less chance of being shot that way

38 Wondering January 10, 2014 at 7:38 PM

Did not realize Concord had such violent street gangs…drive by shootings and gang retaliations? Guess I will be avoiding the Monument Corridor from now on, even in daytime. Am worried that the violence will spread into Walnut Creek bordering neighborhoods, hope not.

39 anon January 10, 2014 at 7:40 PM

I heard that the victim went to Kaiser in Walnut Creek. If he had a life threatening injury I think he would have gone to a trauma center like John Muir.

40 Ranger January 10, 2014 at 7:49 PM

Monument Boulevard was trashy even
when it was called Four Corners back in
the 60s. Never felt comfortable at Cosco
because of this history of the area.

41 Unfortunate homeowner January 10, 2014 at 7:53 PM

Unfortunately, I live on the street (3 blocks from Wendy’s) where they took at least 3 suspects into custody…. Street closed off, about 10 police cars, police tape around suspects house and KTVU doing a news story now! It’s time for me to call my realtor and exit the “hood” ASAP! Too close for comfort!!

42 Just me January 10, 2014 at 7:56 PM

@anon 7:40. I believe the victim was taken to JM Walnut Creek. Engine 5 was enroute there to pick up two (medics). Sounded like PD was dialed into who they were looking for and was pulling video from various businesses in the area.

Also, let’s not all jump to conclusions…two shootings is horrible yes, but there were no murders last year in Claycord I believe. Yes Monument has some problems but you’re not taking your life in your hands to visit a reputable business or drive through the area. Let the PD put the entire story together before we all jump to conclusions.

43 Chevrolet girl January 10, 2014 at 7:57 PM

According to the news the victim was taken to John Muir with serious injuries.

People need to work with the police and get our security, safety and life’s back! All cities, have crime! Police can only do so much, but people looking out for each other, that’s what counts in the end! When voting next time, make sure that you vote in consequences to actions in crime! Too many people don’t like punishment for crimes, therefore more crime because no consequence! Let’s change this! Treating criminals like every day citizens, doesn’t work people!

48 Atticus Thraxx January 10, 2014 at 8:32 PM

I mean if you absolutely have to have fast food for some reason, Wendys isn’t bad. Not good, but not that bad. Fries are pretty good and they always have milk.
Oh yeah, guns are bad or something.

49 Neal January 10, 2014 at 8:36 PM

This is no only sad, it’s pathetic. Not that Monument was ever the nicest area of Concord.

But it wasn’t like it is today.

For those who are sick of it, maybe it’s time to move.

52 @#1 NRA Fan and member January 10, 2014 at 8:53 PM

Why don’t you take your two hands and pull your head out of your bum.

Instead of pointing fingers at “the liberals,” why don’t you admit a lot of our gun violence is due to mouth breathers like you refusing to close basic loopholes that make getting guns so easy to get by the wrong people.

The liberals aren’t trying to take everyone’s guns away. They just want some balance and common sense back.

What the hell is so hard about requiring basic background checks at guns shows or clamping down on rogue gun dealers, straw sales and Internet sellers? These are the #1 sources for criminals to get their guns, not by theft.

Why do you Neanderthals fight legislation that holds parents and relatives responsible when they leave loaded guns around the house that end up killing their kids or other peoples’ kids?

Easier to point fingers than look at some basic awkward facts, huh?

53 Well... January 10, 2014 at 8:58 PM

I just read all the comments here and on the other thread. I would say that the average citizen is not in danger. It sounds like both shooting were targeted and not random. While I understand that you can get hit in the crossfire, I think as long as you are not involved with gangs, drugs, or hanging out with the low lifes who do, you are reasonably safe. Even getting mugged, you have a slim chance.

54 NoMoreFreeRide January 10, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Aren’t all you bleeding heart liberals loving Concord now? This is what happens when when you have large amounts of uneducated (and most likely illegal) people placed into one area. Let’s see if they tell it like probably was a gang shooting. But wait! We don’t have gangs in Concord or rather we didn’t until this city started catering to illegals. This is just the beginning folks get ready for a downward spiral.

55 Likewise January 10, 2014 at 9:29 PM

I don’t understand most of you how you come up about illigals how do you know the guy who was killed was illigals or even the shooters I’m Hispanic but I’m a born us citizen I vote and pay taxes like everyone else so keep illigals comments to your self

56 BCuzItzClaycord January 10, 2014 at 9:33 PM

So the city leaders don’t think there are “gang” issues in Concord. So the city leaders want to dump more money into Todos Santos Plaza. Maybe now the city leaders will realize that having a severe case of “anal cranial” inversion is a problem and they will finally get their heads out of their fannies, admit Concord has problems and let the police to their job and forget all the PC/Viva LaRaza/”they are here for a better life”/we need more “affordable” housing BS. Fix the existing Concord and forget about all the wasted time/energy/money being tossed at the freakin CNWS project.

57 Just me January 10, 2014 at 9:36 PM

Wow, amazing venom being sent from both sides. Born and raised in the Claycord area….I remember a murder while I was in HS one person hit another over the head with an ax over their pot stash. A second murder in Newhall Park-it was a gang murder by a “goid kid” who had gone wrong. That was over 15 years ago now. Point being drugs and gangs have been here a long time it’s not new….It can happen anywhere. Wasn’t there a murder in Alamo a couple of years ago at a Jewlery store and another in San Ramon? Let’s be realistic here and stop jumping to conclusion and blaming liberals or conservatives….

You might wanna pull your head outta your butt. The liberals ARE trying to take the guns away, you idiot! Ever hear what Feinstein said? Now the legislature wants background checks to buy ammunition! Bowl in that area. Not really worried. I’m not involved in any criminal activity so I’m not a high risk target. People worry too much. Stop being such cowards. Live your life. If you keep your nose clean, you should be fine.

69 common sense January 11, 2014 at 1:08 AM

Hope that the victim will pull through.

I think it is time for the Property Tax Paying Citizens of Concord to force some Common Sense changes to the high density housing around the City. We have ordinances and rules that require the Landlords to provide enough parking spaces for the residents of their property. We need to start sending inspectors in to determine how many people are in each unit and if they all are paying rent directly (we all know its in cash). If the apartment complex is over, they need to be immediately served notice additional parking must be added or face fines. The survey information should then be turned over to the IRS so they can make sure the owner is reporting all their CASH income on the property. Along with this, all streets are to be cleared at night and no cars can park their over night just like SF. The neighboring single family houses will be given permits to make sure the apartments cars don’t end up in front of their house. This will cause the rents to decrease since only one family will be able to park only one will be in the unit. As the density decreases it will be better for all involved. Clear streets will also make it easier for the police to sweep through the area at night to see if anything out side the law is taking place.

70 Suzanne January 11, 2014 at 2:03 AM

The police have been busy tonight. What is going on in Claycord, it’s not a full moon but yet the fools are out in full force.

71 @#64 January 11, 2014 at 2:30 AM

I’m dealing with facts, not koolaid, my friend.

The U.S. has the highest gun ownership rate in the world as well as the highest rate of firearm-related deaths. Also gun owners are much more likely to be shot with their own weapon than to fend off a violent crime. Suicides are higher when guns are available, too.

This isn’t something quoted from HuffPost, it’s from a solid academic study recently published in the American Journal of Medicine and backed up by numerous other studies that reach the same conclusion.

It simply isn’t true that guns deter violence and make us safer. That’s the NRA self-justification that’s making our country sicker and sicker.

I don’t know where you get your information, but you need to expand your sources. These laws are more than “feel good” knee-jerk reactions.

http://kdvr.com/2013/12/11/dems-background-checks-stopped-72-gun-sales-to-convicted-criminals/

Sorry to pop your bubble, but there’s a new wave of American citizens who have had enough with the NRA mentality and it’s not just a liberal cause anymore.

72 Silva January 11, 2014 at 6:05 AM

@anon #34; what a great point you make! For we’ve raised at least a couple of generations with this exact form of violence as entertainment. My DH loves to watch that crap at the movies and doesn’t have a lean toward violence in real life, but I’ve often wondered WTH is so entertaining there? And how is it affecting others? It seems to me that at the least it desensitizes people to the sight and sounds of shedding blood.

73 Atticus Thraxx January 11, 2014 at 7:47 AM

So is it guns that are bad or is it people? I keep getting confused.
I can’t argue with the AMA #64 but I think your misreading the national mood. More firearms were sold in the last quarter of 2013 than at anytime in our country’s history. I got a buddy lives in flyover country and he’s asking me about shipping him ammo as they can’t keep it on the shelves where he lives. Unless people are saying one thing and doing another……
It doesn’t matter how many schools get shot up, we are a gun culture , maybe to our shame. You can pass all the laws you want, I’m not giving any weapons up and the bad guys damn sure aren’t.

74 Anon January 11, 2014 at 9:51 AM

75 Silva January 11, 2014 at 10:00 AM

BCuzItsClaycord #59; Yeah, what you said. Ditto. Is Concord to continue becominge a repository for rifraf the other neighboring cities exclude? After what they did to a small bit if open space behind my home; cramming 24 “upscale” homes (as they described them, and they are anything but), where we locals had a place to walk and wildlife flourished, I think we should be seriously questioning the Concord Naval Weapons Project. This city will sell us out in a hot minute for a quick buck.

I’m a liberal, I support tough laws for criminals and I have lots of friends/family that feel the same way. I’m no bleeding heart. The reality is there isn’t enough money in the coffers to feed, house and support our huge prison population, so we start letting lesser offenders get out early, give them suspended sentences, or whatever. Where do you propose we get the money needed to keep these scum in prison when we’re slashing programs to feed needy school kids?

C’mon let’s hear your ingenious solutions.
