Wood Burning Banned on Christmas Eve, Possibly Christmas Day

Put away the chestnuts; the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has announced that wood burning will be banned in the region on Christmas Eve — and possibly on Christmas Day, too.

Tuesday will be the 17th “Winter Spare the Air” day of the season, and the air district will decide that day whether wood burning will also be banned on Christmas.

“The weather forecast looks like we might see another Spare the Air day for Christmas Day,” air district spokesman Tom Flannigan said.

He explained that winds are light, and the weather is forecast to be dry and mild in the region mid-week. The stagnant air has allowed pollutants to accumulate close to the ground, making the air unhealthy to breathe, Flannigan said.

“We haven’t been seeing the rain we usually get that helps clean out the air,” he said.

It wouldn’t be the first time the air district has issued a Spare the Air alert for Christmas; it has happened two other times since the alerts began in 2008, Flannigan said.

It sounds Scrooge-like to tell residents they can’t gather around the fire during the holidays, but air quality officials are asking people to keep in mind the reasons for the ban and realize that it’s not just the air district saying, “Bah, humbug!”

“We’re not picking these days for the fun of it or anything, it completely has to do with the science behind air pollution,” he said.

Flannigan pointed out that children, the elderly and those with asthma and other respiratory problems suffer when the air is thick with unhealthy particulate matter.

He said a fire in the fireplace “looks nice inside your house, and you can’t see the effects it has on other people.”

On Winter Spare the Air days, the burning of wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel is illegal both indoors and outdoors. Homes that depend on woodstoves or fireplaces as their only source of heat are exempt from the ban.

Those who get in trouble for violating the ban for the first time are given the choice of paying $100 or taking a wood smoke awareness class.

Subsequent violations are met with fines of $500 or more.

Bay Area residents are advised to check the region’s burn status before lighting a fire on any given day by visiting the air district’s website at www.sparetheair.org or calling (877) 4-NO-BURN.

Flannigan thanked Bay Area residents in advance for observing the wood-burning ban even though it might put a damper on their holiday celebrations.

“By not burning wood, you’re helping to create a healthier breathing environment for everyone in the Bay Area,” he said.

Winter Spare the Air season runs from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28.

Spare the Air has overstepped itself. No one will die because we shared the primal warmth on these shortest, darkest nights of the year as we have throughout millennia with our loved ones. This is basic humanity. . I do have asthma. I cope. This is BS. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, new Year’s Eve- no one will die because of a fire log.

Burn on Christmas and make the government workers come out of their caves to prosecute.

From the other article, seriously people call David Garrison 1-415-749-4768 (see below).

I just called to inquire what would happen if I burned tomorrow. A guy I talked to by the name of David Garrison claimed and I quote, ” the last guy that asked a bunch of questions” ( I was asking questions about the validity of the science behind it when CPK, refineries, etc. can continue to burn) “ended up a year in Bryant street and five years of probation”.

Basically, you can’t ask questions challenging them or they throw you in jail.

How is this not like Nazi Germany again for all you STA supporters?

If you don’t believe me call and ask for David Garrison and see for yourself.

Good luck with that! They might as well start going door to door handing out citations all day and night to just about every house.

Clue us ALL in regarding the “science” of geo-engineering.
The weather is relatively consistent (especially 15,000 ft up it’s Cold) and some days the skies are littered with Chemtrails which you want to call CONtrails.
Quit Pulling our legs, the Contrails should be in the sky EVERY day because the weather has not changed that much.

This may be a dumb question but I tried looking it up and can’t find the answer.
Can they shut down one or more of the refinery’s for a day? wouldent that help the air quilty more than people not burning wood. Even if it was one day a month.

The freeways in the Bay Area are back up with millions of cars spewing pollution, there are thousands of people at Candlestick park with their BBQ’s and cars, trucks, limo’s ….. Thousands of jets taking off fom airports, ships and trucks spewing diesel particulate. Looks like the only people who have been asked and are Sparing The Air are the people who heat their homes with wood!

27 Bobfshed December 23, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Less than 20% of the winter time PM 2.5 comes from wood fires. Wood fires includes forest fires, brush fires, structural fires. The BAAQMD groups them all together to make it look like fireplaces are the culprits. Not true!

28 What a surprise December 23, 2013 at 6:36 PM

Trip the breaker to your electric furnace,Or turn off the pilot light to your gas furnace. Then build a fire. The only way to play with stupid is to act stupid.I am burning.

29 . December 23, 2013 at 6:40 PM

@BAAQMD #5…

If that’s the case, then that agency needs to be dismantled and any idiot politician involved with it needs to be ridden out of town on a rail.

Asking questions results in a year of jail time and 5 years probation? I’d like to go to that office and confront that POS, because they have no peace officer powers. I’d also like to know specifically what laws they violated to result in a sentence like that. Where is their office?

Time to flood that idiot’s phone line. Maybe we can shut it/him down.

30 Chris Kapsalis December 23, 2013 at 6:44 PM

Shutting down a refinery and starting it up again is a long process. It is not possible. However, as for this spare the air crap, did they have that camp fire at Muir’s house? Also, on Christmas eve and day? Why not make a real difference and ask people not to drive on Christmas eve or day? Not to burn electricity, or use natural gas, the two leading causes of air pollution in the Bay area, with industry a close third. A chimney fire a distant 10th or so, despite the BS they try to feed people. But by the looks of it, people aint buying it. Wood burning is natural, and has been going on on earth since the dawn of time. We have adapted to it, and what we have not adapted tom, is coal. natural gas. Fossil fuels. Nuclear, all of which they want us to, force us to use instead of natural Wood? They are insane. I am ashamed to be a democrat right now. Also this junk science they are using needs to go. It aint science, it is idiocy by idiots imo.

31 fulubulu December 23, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Thanks for Garrison’s contact info. A have a few questions and comments.

32 Shasta Daisy December 23, 2013 at 6:56 PM

It’s supposed to be 68 degrees tomorrow and 66 degrees on Wednesday

I think it is specifically about the large particulates that come from burning wood. I am not an expert so don’t quote me.

@ Landana #16….I don’t think shutting down a refinery for a day is an answer to the problem, unless you want gas prices to go up. It is very expensive to shut down a refinery and start it up again.

I hope we never have the air pollution problems that China has right now.
Maybe we should be a little more forward thinking…hint, hint.
If not for ourselves, then for our children and grandchildren.

33 Blink December 23, 2013 at 6:56 PM

According to the Spare the Air website, woodsmoke comes in at 38% of wintertime PM, not 20. And they do break out wildfires at 2%:

Actually, those guys wouldn’t be allowed to fire up the ovens on a “no burn day”. Godwin’s Law. (Godwin said that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis.)

But back to the topic at hand..how does the BAAQMD issue a citation to an address? Who appears in court? How do they prove anything against a person? Or your heater was out of service, etc. Don’t answer the door! Even the cops need a search warrant!

51 futbllwmn December 23, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Let’s see…… Doesn’t PG&E have to pay for the San Bruno pipeline explosion? $$$$$$$$ What better way than to force people to use their heaters during these very, very cold days and nights. This little “spare the air” scam should fill their coffers nicely. Kudos PG&E !!!!!

55 Chill out people December 23, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Reading some of these comments you would think that we are banning people from having intercourse….

I agree with post #47 – we live with a bunch of cry babies who can’t cooperate with the local community to engage in safe practices to protect our environment. If the Bay Area local Air Quality Management District is telling people not to burn wood, then please refrain from burning wood. They probably know more about science and the adverse effects of air pollution than YOU do.

And why do any of you need to burn wood? Do you live in the 18th century when electricity was not available? Are you people living in such a frigid climate where the temperature is so unbearable??? Wear some warm clothes, turn on the heater for a little while, and deal with it.

56 Chill out people December 23, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Oh here is another one:

Most people don’t know how to burn wood properly and safely, and more importantly extinguish fires at night, which leads to more fire accidents during the winter than any other event.

Perhaps there is a reason why BAAQMD wants to limit the amount of burning wood during the holidays.

57 The minority have absolute control? December 23, 2013 at 10:39 PM

How come the few people thst will suffer while they , for some unknown reason, spend the entire day and night standing outside breathing the winter air (because most people with asthma or allergies stay indoors to mindfully prevent any problems) cause the rest of the Bay Area to be penalized for their health issues? I have allergies and since the district refuses to tell people to get rid of trees and grasses with high pollen counts, I mindfully stay indoors as much as possible when the pollen count is high. So where does this nonsense about fire banning come from? Prediction of weather is not a true science! What a foolish thing for this nincompoop to say! A prediction is the best it can ever be: a prediction. And furthermore, it is usually only one small part of the Bay Area that may have “thick” air as they describe it, yet, by their own admission, they just make it a blanket ban across the entire Bay Area to make it easier for themselves. Ludicrous. Has someone started an online petition yet? We must all get behind the same petition to show our strength in numbers.

Does anyone know if anywhere else in California that they such an absurd “law”?

59 Bobfshed December 23, 2013 at 10:56 PM

Someone is not telling the truth. The 38% number the same number they quoted when they started this nonsense years ago. Now they take credit for reducing wood smoke in the Bay Area by 20-25%. Either your number s not correct or their program is a complete failure! Can’t be both!

60 ...or just burn on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day... December 23, 2013 at 11:01 PM

…and STFU about it already. Your burning is not some revolutionary stand against the government. Your not burning is not going to make a major difference in climate control.

No one knows what the BAAQMD’s actual motivations for the bans are but the BAAQMD. I’m finding their daily updates kind of hilarious, because they’ve gone from being an innocent yet unexciting announcement to local government trolling the Claycord commentary section.

P.S. Meteorologists have been predicting atmospheric conditions, including the weather and air quality, for decades. They utilize sound scientific methods to do so, not black magic. If they are saying the air quality is crap, I’m going to listen to them before I listen to any of you. With that said, if you really have a hard-on for burning your logs, no one with a life gives two sh*ts one way or the other.

If any of you that are having an issue with this subject had (yourself or a loved one) asthma or a friend with stage 4 COPD you would see this issue differently. Saturday I walked from the front door of a grocery store to my car that was parked close and I ended up needing my emergency inhaler for my asthma. It even shocked me. I’m tough but this year is different. My friend who has COPD can’t go outside AT ALL due to the poor air quality. Just because you don’t think it real doesn’t make it not. It’s real for so many people. I ended up having issue as an adult and was just as ignorant as many of the people that have written in thinking it’s a city/big brother/government thing. It’s real and I hope even more then you that it would be clear enough for myself to be able to have a fire tomorrow night. In a way I’m glad many of you don’t have any issue and I wish you could have your fire during your holiday celebration as I do wish all of you a happy holiday.

63 Bobfshed December 23, 2013 at 11:36 PM

The problem is that the media and the BAAQMD will not take some responsibility. In the winter on a spare the air day they shoud not only recommend no burning but also recommend people drive less, less BBQ, less lawn mowers etc. By blaming only wood fires if gives people a false belief that everything else they are doing causes no harm and that is not true!

64 Bobfshed December 23, 2013 at 11:40 PM

Someday when there are no longer wood fires there will still be Spare the Air Days both in the summer and the winter. What will we do then? What will you give up to improve the air? Nothing.

@Bobfshed

“Now they take credit for reducing wood smoke in the Bay Area by 20-25%. Either your number s not correct or their program is a complete failure! Can’t be both!”

It goes both ways for you as well. If the program has reduced woodsmoke in the Bay Area by 20-25%, then it is very successful and should be continued; less we want to go back to the 38% number.

If the program isn’t achieving reductions, then, given the fact that the Bay Area is not in attainment with the federal 24hr PM2.5 standards, it sounds like they need to take more drastic action to cut down on woodsmoke–not less.

67 sam December 24, 2013 at 1:47 AM

I was going to take fredrina, for her stroll last night, but there was such a discernible presence of wood smoke in the air, we just spent no more than 5 minutes outside, before turning around and going back inside the house; @ #3, your absolutely correct, “no one will die because of “a” fire log”; it is the cumulative effect, the sum total of everyone, who is aiding and abetting, contributing to the pollution of our planet’s, ever deminishing, natural resources, this is the key focal point; the human species, imbued with such limitless potential for greatness and achievement, taking into account, his vast capacity, for cognitive intelligence, he is conversely cursed, tainted with the psycholgical diseases, iek self centeredness, self absorbed, narrow mindedness, painfully, very short sighted; to all of you, “die hard” polluters, you will continue to ever wallow, in your self entitled arrogance, you will forever continue to remain defiant, you will keep burning those logs, continue to “throw caution to the wind”, 15, 20 years from now, when you have to purchase oxygen tanks, in order to breath clean air, many more or our planet’s wildlife species will have already been rendered extinct, the human species is going to be dealt its well deserved, massive extinction, of biblical proportions.

68 sam December 24, 2013 at 2:04 AM

I do not burn wood or use my gas heater; I just wear layers of clothing, inclusive head covering, gloves and socks, in the house, trapping my own body heat to keep me warm; just think of it this way, you’ll save some money, reducing the cost of your utility bill and as your body is having to work harder to stay warm, you’ll burn a few more extra calories.

69 anon neighbor December 24, 2013 at 2:53 AM

@Landana, no we can’t shut down a refinery for a day, usually at least a month for Turnaround. Just a stoppage of production and clean out and inspect. Many units in the local refineries will be down for turnarounds the early part of the year.

Remember BAAQMD is at the refineries all year also with 24hr monitoring. The refineries have multiple furnaces that burn PG&E gas like you have in your house, just that they put like 3 million SCF’s (standard cubic foot)a day through them with emission controls tighter than your SUV. Because you major car company got exemptions for “farm vehicles” which is what our SUV’s used to be designated. Not so sure now though????

If you want a comparison, look at the lack of controls in China where they call the choking smog, FOG. You can’t see, everyone wears masks and life goes on.

Oh and remember, weather comes from the north and the east. So all the pollution that happens in China comes our way.

So call these people Nazi’s or whatever you want, that is what is called free speech and it is our right to express. Just remember one thing though>>
The reason you have free speech is because of the people who willingly go into harms way to protect your’s and my way of life and defend our country and this way of life. Thank a soldier, a veteran or any member of their family because they deserve our thanks this holiday season and throughout the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is crazy… Burn both days and be done with it. This is America and I can’t have a fire on Christmas?

82 Horse'n Around December 24, 2013 at 9:35 AM

Does this mean I can’t smoke my Christmas ham outside?

83 clonpet December 24, 2013 at 9:38 AM

Flannigan is an idiot, this is the only ob he could find.. blowing smoke

84 Kalifornia Native December 24, 2013 at 9:57 AM

Getting ready to fire up the smoker for a nice Christmas Salmon fillet…..

Our last year in communist CA celebrating with a fire.
Merry Christmas : )

Thank you James for sharing. I agree, questioning the government is just wrong. We should do whatever we are told.

Can you help me with my cancelled health insurance?

87 Bobfshed December 24, 2013 at 10:14 AM

@anonymous
I thought you could keep your insurance if you wanted?

88 Bobfshed December 24, 2013 at 10:15 AM

Smokin a beautiful prime rib right now! Smells great!

89 Lynne Ellis December 24, 2013 at 10:27 AM

I have decided PGE has a big hand in this.

90 jtkatec December 24, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Has anyone seen the brown haze on the horizon.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Los Angeles, everywhere you go.
Take a look at the five and ten, glistening once again with smog and vapor trails all aglow.

@Bobfshed

“Or maybe they should cut down on the sources causing the other 80% of the PM 2.5! Like your car!”

Ok, Their site is a nightmare to navigate, but a quick Google search for “site:baaqmd.gov vehicle emission reductions” turns up the following programs:

“Bay Area Air District renews $7 million vehicle buy back program”

“Air District Offers $15 million to reduce Diesel engine pollution”

Looks to me like they are working on cutting on that “80%” other source. (PS I don’t own a car; never really needed one in the city.)

@Bobfshed

Oh! Found another one:
http://www.smokingvehiclehelp.org

This looks like exactly what you’re looking for: a program analogous to spare the air for smoking vehicles.

They really need to redesign their website; it looks like something out of the mid 2000s.

What the hell is wrong with me, why didn’t I see it, until now; I am most assuredly, “barking up the wrong tree”, continuing to post my submissions, in this Claycord blog, ie, “bird’s of a feather…”.

94 Somewhat December 24, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Your burning in spite of the STA is just
giving BAAQMD reason to ban fireplace fires
permanently, regardless of air quality. LA
did it. Then they will need even more staff
to police your fires year round, making them
an even larger more powerful agency. If
you cooperate now, you may be able to
hold off what will eventually be inevitable.

95 Mark December 24, 2013 at 12:20 PM

We will be burning tonight and tomorrow night.

96 Libertarian December 24, 2013 at 12:31 PM

They just banned burning on Christmas Day, David Garrison thinks he is god. He threatened me with a year in county jail for questioning the validity of STA days.

Don’t believe me call him at (415) 749-4768 and see for yourself.

What the hell is wrong with me, why didn’t I see it, until now; I am most assuredly, “barking up the wrong tree”, continuing to post my submissions, in this Claycord blog, ie, “bird’s of a feather…”; humans, none of you are at fault, all of you are innocent; “God love you, God help you”.

98 Pro Fi December 24, 2013 at 3:06 PM

When you make a comment saying that the turning off the gas ovens that killed millions of innocent humans is analogous to burning wood… you have serious mental issues. I have watched as you self appointed defenders of freedom have talked out of both sides of your mouths for far too long. And thank you for the history lesson, the Nazi party was able to gain power through propaganda. Your rights are not being taken away.. you can still speak your mind.. you can still carry a weapon and you can still go vote. This is NOT a repressed country. And when you spew hate and vitriol to make a point then you are no better then those you condemn.

The problem isn’t big government… it is lazy people that are all too willing to post some pretty stoopid crap on the internet to make themselves feel big and powerful. No original thought whatsoever… stoopid is as stoopid does. Get offline and do something or STFU… the American Revolution wasn’t fought on the internet!
