The Water Cooler – Fast Food & Kids

November 18, 2013 12:00 pm · 34 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

How often do you give your kid(s) a meal from a fast-food restaurant?

Talk about it….

1 J. November 18, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Once a week.

2 Jim November 18, 2013 at 12:12 PM

Not very often but I will say thats it’s MY call when we do or don’t have fast food…not the goverment’s job…or anyone elses

3 Anon777 November 18, 2013 at 12:14 PM

When my kids lived at home, they probably got fast food about once or twice a month.

4 richy November 18, 2013 at 12:17 PM

Once every two to three weeks.

5 Marissa November 18, 2013 at 12:20 PM

I don’t give my kids “fast food”. They sneak off and get it themselves whenever they can. My cooking doesn’t count yet.

6 Silva November 18, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Almost never. I can’t eat it anymore, which makes it easier to say no. It’s not convenient if I still have to prepare food at home.

7 Mac November 18, 2013 at 12:34 PM

With my kids i got them fast food a couple times a week.

But that has changed with my Grandsons. (because of my Daughters)
They don`t want them eating that crap.
And i understand.
So i make things for them to eat at home.
Not as easy or fast, but it`s a lot better for them.
And cheaper in the long run.

But i still give them candy :-)
I feel that is part of Papa`s job, to give them sweets.
Because their are no rules at Papa`s house.
The boys know they can not get in trouble.
But funny thing is, they act like angels at my house. (always)

I love our time together at my house.
And hope it continues for years to come.

8 Amazing November 18, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Seldom did we cooked at home as a family.
Actually have young 20 something co-workers that are not capable of making a meal from scratch.

9 Nufsaid November 18, 2013 at 12:44 PM

Only on road trips over 2 hours. Equates to once a month or less.

10 Triple Canopy November 18, 2013 at 12:53 PM

About once a week, if that.

And it’s not a meal per se. Rather, fastfood is supposed to be something quick and convenient to hold ones’ hunger over until a real meal. It is not, and should never, be a staple or substitute for real meals.

11 Dorothy November 18, 2013 at 1:43 PM

Seldom but now that they work they decide.

Chipolte is the only one I will go to and even then, not that often.

12 Anon. November 18, 2013 at 1:47 PM

maybe once a week, usually reserved for the grandparents, or when we are in a bind…try not to…and as the kids get older, we eat it less. when they were young, a happy meal is all they would eat. now we can do sandwiches/burritos/salads more when we are on the go….

13 Never November 18, 2013 at 2:02 PM

If I had kids. I’d never take them out to fast food. Well…..maybe 2X / year as a treat or something, but I’d never make a habit out of it or make it into something they’d expect. It’s much healthier and cheaper to cook at home. When we were growing up, fast food was a treat. I think we ate fast food about 4X per year as kids.

14 Never. Maybe once every 5 yrs. November 18, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Never. PBJ sandwiches for trips. Maybe once every 5 years when something happens unexpectedly and there is no other option…like the car breaks down not near any grocery stores. But there are usually grocery stores where there is fast food.

15 Never - but don't make it a law! November 18, 2013 at 2:18 PM

I agree with the person above who said almost never, but it’s my choice! The government should stay out of it – one way or the other!

We don’t eat fast food in order to be frugal, and in order to cut calories, but the government has no business telling us what to eat or what not to eat.

16 anonanonagain November 18, 2013 at 3:44 PM

Only on a blue moon. Also it depends on the fast food. Mc’Donalds, Wendy’s, Burger King, never. Five guys seems to be a better compromise or In N’ Out, since the beef actually tastes better. But on the whole, I would rather choose not to at all…..My stomach and my waistline thanks me too.

17 Mr. John November 18, 2013 at 4:05 PM

I would never characterize fast food as a treat. If I took my kids to fast food, it would be a matter of convenience on rare occasion. And I’d make sure they knew it wasn’t good food – it isn’t healthy, and if you eat too much of it you feel sick later. Then, after I put them to bed, I’d go back and get more for me.

18 Bad Parent November 18, 2013 at 4:11 PM

It is very bad that parents would even introduce that garbage food to the kids.

It is their fault that the kids are obese and getting diabetes at a young age.

They repeat what their parents taught them and pass the bad habits to their kids.

19 I'm The Urban Spaceman November 18, 2013 at 4:17 PM

In n’ Out only…I’ve never taken her (or myself since the early 80’s) to McD, Taco Bell, KFC, Jack, etc.
I don’t want to feed her or myself hormone laden cholesterol bombs.

20 Ruth November 18, 2013 at 6:20 PM

And to MAC – and what makes you think that giving candy to your grandkids is not “crap” that you refer to? You are contributing to cavities, obesity and childhood diabetes.

“Papa’s job” is to make sure that the grandkids are eating healthy so that they can grow up with no health issues, which you probably have.

21 judaspriest November 18, 2013 at 6:20 PM

we have obamacare so that’s all we can afford now .. but my obamaplan doesn’t provide coverage for open heart surgery .. go figure kids whatever you want from the dollar menu up to 2 items thank your pres

22 Cracky McGee November 18, 2013 at 6:44 PM

My kids eat fast food about once a month. We believe in “everything in moderation”! We try to teach healthy habits but also avoid glamorizing any foods so much that it becomes the “forbidden fruit” ….

23 frenchdog November 18, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Mom took us to the golden arches and dairy queen when we went to town way back in the 60,s , thank you Mom

24 Cowellian November 18, 2013 at 7:08 PM

Ruth fails at being a grandpa, in oh-so-many ways.

25 ChampagneKitty November 18, 2013 at 7:19 PM

Ruth, stop being so judgmental. Grandparents giving their grandkids sweet treats is a time-honored tradition. Lighten up.

26 tredogandi November 18, 2013 at 8:14 PM

These days it’s hard to define “fast food”. It seems that everyone is always in a hurry, and if their food doesn’t come “fast”, they complain.
I digress, we’ll eat at an “order from the counter” restaurant once every couple of weeks. In N’ Out, Cheesesteak Shop, Nations. Not always the cheapest option, but quick. My favorite part…no dishes.

27 Mac November 19, 2013 at 9:08 AM

Ruth…. Giving them a couple of “Red Vines” and a package of gummi bears is not going to hurt them, or make them unhealthy.
I`m healthy as a bull at 54 and i`ve eaten them my whole life. (along with good meals)

God knows i would not do anything to hurt my Grandsons.
And i would go out of my way to see that they are healthy.

But after we are outside hitting the baseball around.
And going to the park to run around.
A couple of sweets are not going to hurt them.
Because it is the only time they get them. (is with me)
They don`t drink sodas. (water, milk or apple juice)

But to be honest Ruth, i don`t need your approval to continue.
I`m a great Papa, and will continue to be. (even if you disagree)

I hope you have a relationship with your Grandkids, half as good as mine is with my grandsons.

But thanks for your opinion, but it`s just that, “your opinion”.

28 Mac November 19, 2013 at 9:16 AM

Now if i were getting them candy that made them not eat a good meal.
Now that would be wrong.

Growing boys need good meals (with milk)
But adding in a sweet once a week after the good meal is eaten.
Is a ok with Papa (and my Daughters)

And in my house, my Daughters are boss, when it comes to their kids.
If they asked me to stop, i would. (just like i did the fast food)

But thanks for your concern….

29 Julie November 19, 2013 at 10:41 AM

Our kids are grown. but I used to give them fast food once or twice a month.

Usually when my husband and I were going out.

No one in our family is overweight. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.

30 singlemalt November 19, 2013 at 10:48 AM

If you’re dumb enough to believe that “fast food” is actually a food that can be safely consumed. You should have your kids sterilized now.
This gene pool won’t clean itself.

31 Cowellian November 19, 2013 at 11:03 AM

Singlemalt seems to have forgotten his tinfoil hat today.

32 Idiocracy November 19, 2013 at 11:58 AM

No 30 is right that’s all processed garbage….Don’t eat that stuff its engineered food and frozen too. I know a guy who still lives with his mom in his 30’s (lol) who eats Fast Food everyday from In and Out to Pizza to Frozen Microwavable food from Safeway. Needless to say the guys delusional about his health and refuses to stop eating Fast food and I forgot to mention he drinks probably 6 – 7 sodas a day and eats Candy and Jerky while watching sports center all day. I’m not sure if he is trying to grow a turkey gobbler like Ray Ratto (sports center analyst) or whatever but its revolting to watch dude destroy himself and I have tried to advise and deter him from eating that stuff. Never listens …very sad and has no motivation to change the habit which is insane

33 @Ruth November 19, 2013 at 12:05 PM

34 Mac November 19, 2013 at 12:49 PM
