One of the bores of the Caldecott Tunnel between Orinda and Oakland is completely filled with smoke this morning because of a car fire, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The car fire in the eastbound bore on state Highway 24 was reported at 9:49 a.m., CHP Officer Ron Simmons said.
A Sig-alert was issued at 10:21 a.m. Simmons said traffic was at a standstill and many drivers left their cars in the tunnel and were walking out.
Fire crews have responded to the car fire and Caltrans is working on getting the middle bore opened for eastbound traffic, Simmons said.
No injuries have been reported.
UPDATE, 12:01pm: The tunnel is back open.
