Rasputin Music – Moving Back to their Old Pleasant Hill Location

moving

Rasputin Music, which has been located in the old Tower Records building on Diamond Boulevard for the past few years, is in the process of moving back to their former spot in Pleasant Hill, on the corner of Contra Costa Blvd. & Taylor.

According to Rasputin, they should be back in business this week. Blondie’s Pizza is also expected to return to their old location next to Rasputin on Contra Costa & Taylor.

This move comes just days after Sport Chalet, which is also located in the same shopping center on Diamond Blvd., announced they plan to close their store in the very near future. A hobby store called “Hobby Lobby” is rumored to be moving into Sport Chalet’s building.

Thanks to Paul for the picture!

Howard K Mullins III August 5, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Didn’t I read here that “Hobbytown” was going to move in there?

jtkatec August 5, 2013 at 9:44 AM

The vacated shopping center needs a fabric store.

A fabric store which has rows and rows of fabric from 3.99 to 35.99 a yard.
A fabric store which does not have row upon row of fleece.
A fabric store which has challis, silk, cottons, hemp, double-knit, single knit, florals, pastels, dotted swiss, chintz, brocade.

Thousands of bolts all lined up by color, by weight, by content.

A fabric store which does not sell cheap, cheesy fabric, with bolt after bolt of fleece, NOT JOANN’s.

I want a TRUE fabric store.

Must have gotten a great deal to move back.. Wonder who will want that old tower records space..

Whenever I see Rasputin’s, I think of The Wherehouse (which was the record store in the 70’s) at the same location in in ’72 or ’73. My friends and I were just shopping when armed robbers walked in. We ran across the street to catch the AC Transit bus. My parents asked “How was your trip to Sun Valley.” (I was 12 or 13). I told them “they didn’t have what I was looking for.” I was looking for Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd albums, and was “interrupted by armed robbers.” According to the Concord Transcript, they were never caught. Thanks for the memories…….

youarestrong August 5, 2013 at 9:54 AM

I can’t wait for them to come back.

erin August 5, 2013 at 10:10 AM

Hobby Lobby bought both buildings, sports chalet has until the 23rd to be gone

CLAYCORD.com August 5, 2013 at 10:15 AM

Thanks, Erin.

oh good August 5, 2013 at 10:13 AM

glad they and blondie’s are coming back. I agree with the fabric store comment. we DO need a good fabric store. I wish the yarn stores which included embroidery would come back too.

Ummmm August 5, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Ummm A few years?More Like 10 Mayor

CLAYCORD.com August 5, 2013 at 11:13 AM

It hasn’t been 10 years.

Keeping it klassy August 5, 2013 at 10:30 AM

I can’t believe PH is going to let them back into that shopping center. It’s such an eye sore. They should have leveled it years ago. Hobby Lobby is like Michael’s. It’s big in the South. Great craft place. Maybe, once it’s in, we can actually find crafting supplies we need since Michael’s customer service is horrible and keeping their shelves stocked is even worse. Can’t ever find anything I need. Glad to hear something useful is going into that location.

still spinnin' vinyl and eatin' pizza August 5, 2013 at 10:48 AM

I used to know a guy that worked for the owner of both businesses, Ken Sarachan. He treated him well, but my friend told me some colorful stories about his business practices. Love him or hate him, I’m guessing there’s a pretty good story behind this P.H. Blondie’s/Rasputin debacle as well.

Back to the dumping grounds... August 5, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Ok, so the question remains…when on earth are they going to proceed with sprucing up their old/new location?!

Mayor, can you provide some insight?

@2jtkatec August 5, 2013 at 9:44 AM August 5, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Looking forward to your new store Good luck

Angelica August 5, 2013 at 11:38 AM

I was hoping for something really nice on this corner. Anything but an “eyesore” will do!

SB August 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Could someone enlighten those of us new to the area.
What shopping center are they going back to?

concord resident August 5, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Good to see Hobby Lobby coming in. I’ve wanted to support them ever since they slashed their employees hours so they didnt have to do obamacare. And they also take a principled stand against homosexual marriage. I will definitely be shopping there!

Felino August 5, 2013 at 11:57 AM

. . . . and still no Olive Garden, how sad. ;( (sarcasm over)

Finally August 5, 2013 at 11:59 AM

The East side of the freeway Curse, has been lifted.

BagsFlyFree August 5, 2013 at 12:01 PM

@ SB.. Taylor and Contra Costa blvd pleasant hill… See’s Candy is currently on the other end of this lot..

BagsFlyFree August 5, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Interesting info on the Hobby Lobby site.. Sounds like a company that likes to give back..

At Hobby Lobby, we value our customers and employees and are committed to:
• Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with biblical principles.
•Offering our customers exceptional selection and value in the crafts and h ome decor market.
• Serving our employees and their families by establishing a work environment and company policies that build character, strengthen individuals and nurture families.
• Providing a return on the owner’s investment, sharing the Lord’s blessings with our employees, and investing in our community.

Jessica August 5, 2013 at 12:05 PM

@SB-#16 The corner of Contra Costa Blvd. and Taylor Rd. used to be Blondie’s Pizza (on the corner) with Rasputin Records next door. According to this article, both businesses will be returning to this location.

If you’re not familiar with this corner, it’s across from Sun Valley. (See’s Candy is there too).

Derps August 5, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Who cares it’s called pandora

Antler August 5, 2013 at 12:07 PM

jtkatec at #2, and oh good at #7 ~ ~ ~ Make that THREE of us!!!

….but I do like hobby stores, too…..especially if they sell the wonderful wooden jigsaw puzzles.

SB at #16 ~ ~ ~ They are not going back into a true shopping center, but their store does share a parking lot with the See’s Candy Store (roughly across Contra Costa Boulevard from Sears).

rkt88edmo August 5, 2013 at 12:07 PM

For those of you unfamiliar with Ken –
– he started selling LPs on a table on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley and now owns Rasputin’s Blondies, and 2-3 other stores on Telegraph.
– he is now one of the biggest real estate owners on Telegraph near the campus
-he generally looks pretty slopppy and you would probably avoid sitting next to him on BART if you are picky
* I think he owns the store at the “old” site (for those of you unfamiliar it is the corner lat across from SV mall that has the big ugly solar arrays on top, he was probably making a good bit of dough at the old tower location based on low rent and foot traffic from GC and SC, plus people who still think of it as a place ot go for music since it used to be Tower
– He doesn’t really care about eyesores and will push limits when it comes to permits and use. See the famous “empty lot” on Telegraph that has gone undeveloped for decades over various issues as well as his current ice cream business issues.

whoaaaa i need a job August 5, 2013 at 12:08 PM

got me a blood red mohawk, 1″ ear gauges and a bone through my nose. Where do I apply

Rasputins / Blondie Lover August 5, 2013 at 12:15 PM

Yes! If Blondie’s moves in there it’ll be just like old times! Yippee!

BTW – The solar panels are now positioned right for all the conclusion jumpers out there… spaz!

Sold August 5, 2013 at 12:30 PM

I don’t know how Rasputins got away with leaving the previous spot in such shambles after they moved over to Guitar center. Now they are moving back and there is a bunch of junk in the front that they just leave overnight. They strike me as lazy, that they don’t wanna do too much work in one day so they just leave everything outside. Then at night people dig through it and toss videos and other junk all over the parking lot. The city of Pleasant Hill must not care about what their city looks like if the allowed Rasputins to get away with this.

bar`10`der August 5, 2013 at 12:35 PM

there are two different hobby lobby stores. anyone know what one it will be. hopefully then one with R/C stuff not just crafts.

anonanonagain August 5, 2013 at 12:41 PM

I drove by yesterday and the building looks like an eyesore. There was definitely something going on, but looking through the windows you could see so much junk!!! Rasputin’s must be desperate…….

C'mon mayor August 5, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Ok mayor at least 8-9 years just admit your headline is wrong it’s been way more than “A Few years”

CLAYCORD.com August 5, 2013 at 1:05 PM

@C’mon Mayor, the headline is correct. And no, I’m not wrong, they’ve been at the Tower Records location since about 2007.

Nom de Plume August 5, 2013 at 1:15 PM

Hobby Lobby is wonderful, glad to see it coming here!

nytemuvr August 5, 2013 at 1:26 PM

I would hope that Blondies has better pizza than back in the day….bring Sham’s Pizza back and the Pacheco Raceway.

No thanks Hobby Lobby August 5, 2013 at 2:40 PM

@Concord Resident… Thank you for giving me reasons NOT to shop at Hobby Lobby. I will do my research and see if these items are true. If so, I will definitely avoid supporting this business.

Katherine August 5, 2013 at 2:41 PM

@C’mon Mayor–#31 Being rude to the Mayor should be against your better judgment. I’m sure he’s strong enough to take it, but if you don’t like the headlines, there are other blogs. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us!

CLAYCORD.com August 5, 2013 at 3:07 PM

Thanks, Katherine. 🙂

JustMe August 5, 2013 at 3:06 PM

I might revisit Blondies if they come back. Used to enjoy grabbing a slice there every once in a while, although towards the end, they got kind of funny. Does anyone else still sell pizza by the slice? I miss Cybell’s…

NoName August 5, 2013 at 3:29 PM

All I know is that in early 2009 my close friend opened a business and immediately passed on the location in question because it was infested (abundantly obviously) with rodents.

If the joint is just dusted off from 2007, make a u-turn. Especially if Blondie’s comes back. As a former long-hair myself, I still was creeped out by the skanky dreadlocks hanging over the pies. Was that grated Parmesan or dandruff?

Winn August 5, 2013 at 3:59 PM

Rasputins used to give free limo rides to the store. A bunch of friends and I used to just call the number on the commercial, and the limo would pick you at your house….

Winn August 5, 2013 at 4:00 PM

*pick you up at your house

Cowellian August 5, 2013 at 4:26 PM

I like the Hobby Lobby in our neighborhood.

I'm The Urban Spaceman August 5, 2013 at 5:00 PM

Joy! Blondie’s Slices and The return of Cucaracha Ciudad.
Will they be allowed to run over the pizzas before they are served, as in the old days?

Elwood August 5, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Crappy pizza, crappy audio and a crappy building to be overrun with stoners.

PH has definitely scored the trifecta of crap.

Pleasant Hillian August 5, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Blondie’s!! All the Tattooed, pierced unemployed youth in Clay cord, have a potential job awaiting.

BCuzItzClaycord August 5, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hobby Lobby. Won’t have to go out to the valley to go tone anymore. Great home décor items. Does anyone know if it will be open before the holidays???? I love Hobby Lobby <3

Carol August 5, 2013 at 9:50 PM

Nice! I’m a crafty person so I can’t wait for Hobby Lobby to open. And Blondie’s Pizza and Rasputins back at its old location? Cool! Like the good ol’ days. Why did they close/move anyways?

Concordlifer August 5, 2013 at 11:38 PM

I’m more excited that Blondie’s pizza is coming back.

Walnut Creek Resident August 6, 2013 at 12:01 AM

That is so different!! A bit like The Dome coming back.. It just does not happen like that. I am happy for all the people that will shop and eat there. Blondie’s has the greasiest pizza I have ever tried. The music store is wonderful.. Good for them.

stuffandpuff August 6, 2013 at 6:54 AM

I used to love to get a slice of pizza and browse records on my breaks from DVC. Great memories…

CatM August 6, 2013 at 7:37 AM

Hopefully, the City of Pleasant Hill will enforce a “look nicer” suggestion. It is such an eyesore. The homeless camps in Pleasant Hill look better than that corner.

Mac August 6, 2013 at 8:16 AM

Dang, i wanted “Jerry`s Beef Burgers” to come back-

freeda August 6, 2013 at 8:57 AM

You have to do what you have to do. I’m not sure why my posts are not posted as I am new to this site. Bomb cars, thats hilarious, all of the signs and tragedy around, it’s god awful. I hope the music store does well.

2 cents August 6, 2013 at 10:37 AM

I loved going to blondies in Berkeley as a teen because the pizza tasted sooooo good! So when I moved over here and found the one in P-Hill, I was excited! But then I went in and ordered a slice…while standing at the counter waiting my turn, I watched the order taker, with a mohawk and multiple piercings/tats as described by other posters, sneeze onto a whole pizza he was boxing up. Then he shook his head like wow, thst was a good one, snd continue to close the box as if there was nothing wrong. HE LOOKED LIKE A METH ADDICT. Needless to say, I turned around and walked out. The entire place was dirty and disgusting inside anyway. Can’t believe the health dept never got a complaint or enough reason to shut it down prior! They did end up going out if business though to my relief. Hopefully the new (or same?) owners will take heed to all these comments snd run a better restaurant this time around!!!!!

Dixi Chick August 7, 2013 at 1:05 AM

You’re both wrong. 6 years is more than a few and less than ten. And yes, they moved in in early 2007.
