A federal appeals court in San Francisco today lifted a stay that had blocked same-marriages in California.
Manny Rivera, a spokesman for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, said that lawyers for two couples who sued to challenge California’s Proposition 8 believe the action by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals means that gay marriages can resume in the state.
Rivera said the first pair to be married following the action will be one of the two plaintiff couples, Kris Perry and Sandra Stier, of Berkeley.
They will be married at San Francisco City Hall at 4:15 p.m.

Good news for Yhe Phantom & shadowblade. Congratulations you two.
Post under your own tag name, troll.
The sky is not falling, the sky is not falling.
Really. It isn’t.
One more reason to skip 5 o’clock news.
Yay for them!! I’m glad everyone is free to marry any adult person of their choosing. Glad we( as a country) are taking a step forward toward equality.
A banner day for Divorce lawyers everywhere, now with twice the feeding ground. If you ask me ( and I know no one did…), they were better off without the mess lawyers can bring to the table.
Shakespeare had it right…
Call me old fashioned, but I long for the days when gays would simply marry straight people.
All you people who thinks that two men, or two women getting married is going to ruin your “traditional” marriage… ya better watch out!! sleep with one eye open, watch around every corner, your “traditional marriage is doomed!!!! LOL!
bible thumpers lose…again
Good day for freedom in this country
@ #2 –
Thanks, I will and I do.
You are invited to the marriage of me and my lovely sheep Fluffy.
Third barn on the left as you leave Modesto.
Sunrise tomorrow.
I’m not gay, don’t know anybody who is gay and have been in a 25 year, happy relationship without being married because I couldn’t care less about marriage.
With all that said, I have to say it’s about damn time! Why shouldn’t they be able to get married?
Keeping the “bible” (which I think is a bunch of hooey anyway) out of it, I’ve never heard one valid reason why two people who are in love and want to share their loves shouldn’t be able to get married to each other. Who cares if it’s two men or two women?
Unless something personally and negatively affects my life or the lives of my children, I mind my own business.
Love and let love.
Congratulations!
And to all of the Social Conservatives whose marriage will be “destroyed” – if you have a hot wife plenty of guys will be emailing her on Match.com right after you get the divorce now that marriage means nothing to you.
I can’t help it but all this hoopla about who society will allow to get married and to whom reminds me of the line in the movie Zorba the Greek: “Am I not a man? And is a man not stupid? I’m a man, so I married. Wife, children, house, everything. The full catastrophe.”
What ever happened to the days where marriage was between “a man and a woman?” I guess I’m “happily old fashioned.”
A sad day for America, and a huge miscarriage of justice. Prop 8 passed by over 500,000 votes in an election that saw voters elect Obama overwhelmingly in California.
A small selfish minority has degraded the institution of marriage and denied justice to California voters. So typical of the liberal fascists running our state and country.
Today is a glorious day! Long live the lbgtq community!
@elwood – we’ll be there….
Happily closed minded is more like it.
God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. The crap they teach kids in school about homosexuality. Stick to the 3 R’s!!!
Mexi-Gay-fornia
I am sick of all the attention the politicians are getting starting with Gavin Newsom’s beginning of the entire gay marriage idea!! They used this and love the money and fame it brings to them. Gays are getting married… so what. That is the way people get ahead, They use others.
@Angelica (#15) — Why not also ask yourself: Whatever happened to the “divine right of kings”?
With the advent of democracy, people have — albeit slowly in the case of marriage — overcome both obstacles to equality.
“Today is a glorious day! Long live the lbgtq community!”
Yeah sure. I’m just glad that they can’t reproduce.
@Angela #15
Or you could just possibly be an old bigot?
@Mark #20,
Yeah uh-huh, as if a GED reject, such as yourself, ever stepped into a school. Who are you trying to kid?
My own comment has now been bumped back to position #2. But that comment was directed at the troll using Indie’s tag name (now appearing at #1).
Standing in the checkout line at Safeway today, a young man was reading all of the headline news…he turned to his Mom and asked “Mommy, can you get pregnant from anal sex?” The Mom, without hesitation, said ” Of course honey, where do you think lawyers come from?”
I agree with Angelica and Mark. Marriage is between men and women. It’s called COMMON SENSE! There are gay people who are against gay marriage. Gay marriage is ILLOGICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ Always right #16 ” A small selfish , minority has degraded the institution of marriage ” In case you haven’t noticed the heterosexual community has already degraded the institution of marriage. Myself, I’ve been happily married for 35 years. But, sad to say, I know more straight couples that get married just about as often as they change their socks. I know many gay and lesbian couples who have been in long term, stable relationships for many, many years. Get over it and mind your own business.
@Max: Twice the feeding ground for divorce lawyers? You may want to check your math, but considering the current estimate is that only about 3.4% of adults in the U.S. identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, I don’t think this will double the divorce rate.
@Always Right: Since, as you stated, the gay community is such a small minority, I don’t think you should really be so worried about how they are going to degrade what you believe the institution of marriage is supposed to be. You may also want to read up a bit on your anthropological history and origins of language because you would quickly realize that until rather recently history marriage was not generally between one man and one woman, and was often set up for reasons other than love. In other words, marriage is as dynamic as any other aspect of our world, just because you have an archaic view of it does not mean the happiness of another should be impeded.
Oops,
I meant “until rather recent history,” not “until rather recently history.”
Unbelievable
It is all political. What happened to the days when couples said “we don’t need a piece of paper to prove our love.” It isn’t about love now it is about what can we get. The government should stay out of marriage. People can have any kind of ceremony they want, religious or civil, and marry as many other people as they want. But, no benefits from the government or employers. No sharing of social security, pensions or health benefits. Everyone get his/her own. Share anything else you want. Government out of marriage.
@Mark21:????? So now the schools are responsible for “teaching” homo sexuality? It’s a learned behavior? Did you forget to take your meds? Go back under your rock!
Codified discrimination is never ok. Now, let’s repeal the rest of DOMA.
I’m gay, and I don’t believe in gay marriage. It doesn’t make any sense! It’s not like I want any kids. Marriage is for a straight man to marry a straight woman. All these straight people trying to defend gays. A lot of gays have no desire to marry. It will just increase the divorce rate, which is way too high to begin with.
Finally my partner & I can be legally joined. Praise GOD!
@ Always Wrong – Stop with the fascist bs……..you don’t even know what the h*ll a “fascist” is…………..now crawl back under you rock and let people live the life they want. Gay marriage, or any marriage for the matter does not affect your sad little existence……………..
Just because you don’t believe in gay marriage doesn’t make you a bigot. Some people have higher morals. The truth hurts!
A LOT OF GAYS WERE ALREADY MARRIED, AND THAT’S WHY THEY’RE GAY. IF YOU DON’T THINK IT’S A “CHOSEN LIFESTYLE”, YOU NEED TO THINK AGAIN. I SHOULD KNOW.
“what happened to ….” what happened to people minding their own business ? to the gay guy that doesn’t want to get married cuz it’s ” not like you’ll be having kids, marriage is not about kids !! and alot of lesbians and gays DO want kids.
Michelle-gays and lesbians should not have kids. It’s not fair to the kids. It’s not about you. If you want to be a lesbian, go for it. But don’t put kids through living hell!!!! You obviously don’t have kids, and if you do, change your mindset for the sake of your children.
@Cassandra #40,
It sure does make you a bigot. It also makes you a simpleton. You see simpleton, your “moral code” is completely made up gibberish by people that can’t make sense of the world without a magical sky daddy. Truth hurts, doesn’t it, simpleton?
@”Steve” #37
We know you’re lying.
Mister Wiser-you sound like a miserable person. My cousin is gay, and she doesn’t believe in gay marriage. She was married (to a man), and never wanted kids. A lot of people don’t, straight or gay. A lot of people regret their decision as far as having kids. I believe people post how they really feel. You’re an arrogant prick.
Hmmm…it doesn’t seem to my wife and me that our marriage has been diminished in any way with this week’s events….
@Always Right
I bet you think you know your Constitution better than your President, don’t you?
FIRST–You seem to be mixing up your Bible with your Constitution.
The Bible is for YOU to follow in your own personal life.
How you treat others (Jesus would need to have a talk with you about that)
The Constitution is for EVERYONE to follow, if they want to abide by the rules in the country.
In the First Amendment, it states Freedom of Religion, which means freedom FROM religion, AND that no one is obligated to follow YOURS.
Separation of Church and State. Pretty clear, right?
The Fourteenth Amendment says NO ONE is allowed to vote on the rights of other people.
Prop 8, which is undeniably unconstitutional, was devised by a bunch of selfish, small-minded bigots who don’t believe anyone, but they, deserve love and happiness.
It really bugs my that the same people who want small government, fewer regulations, lower taxes, and no background checks for gun owners, are the same people who want government to regulate who someone is allowed to love, to commit to, to be responsible for, and to marry.
Oh, feel free to shoot someone in the head, just don’t try to marry him!\
Does anybody really care? I just wish they’d shut up about it, including this idiot Mister Wiser. Get a life!
@sabrina #43
Statistically gay and lesbian parents are more fit for parenting than those of their straight counterparts. They raise their children to be more accepting and open minded to all situations. The last thing a gay parent would want is for their child to be gay because the parents is. The research on this topic is astounding, and I really think all should read into it.
Those who feel threatened in their own marriages due to this weeks rulings, should really take a closer look at their own relationship. It doesn’t effect you in any way what so ever. So why is it a problem? Do you not believe that all human beings deserve to be seen as equal?
So if the voters approved an amendment to the constitution that read those who are always right, may not be allowed to be always right or associate with others who are always right, would that be ok?
Are you ok having your constulitutional right ls violated?
All this same sex stuff doesn’t bother us too much here in Clayton. All the married guys know it’s same old sex every week. All us single womanizer types do better when the guys keep turning gay, more women for us! Just don’t any of you try that boy on boy smooching in public here tho! We still have enough cowboys and regular Joe types to boot your butts all the way back to Walnut Creek.
Every kid deserves to be raised in a “happily married, loving and supportive two parent household….a Mom and a Dad!” GAYS AND LESBIANS SHOULD NOT HAVE KIDS, BOTTOM LINE, END OF STORY! NOR SHOULD THEY BE ALLOWED TO GET MARRIED. GET SOME COUNSELING!!!!!!! I’m not buying that gays were “born that way.” It’s BS!!!
When one of your kids turns out gay or lesbian you can be re-educated.
I’d watch how loudly you all complain…. over the course of my life I’ve found that the ones who shoot off their big mouths the most negatively about gays, are usually the biggest closet case homosexuals themselves. Anything to deflect attention from them.
Big finger to California voters.
People are entitled to their own opinion. Whatever happened to being mature, and agreeing to disagree? It works wonders, personally and professionally. Never let your opinion be known on controversial subjects, and you’ll be a much nicer, more likeable person. Think about it…..
I’m against gay marriage because it’s against my religion. I follow scripture, and that’s my right.
EB2SF– I’m not gay, but I am jolly.
@ Steve. Nice try troll. Nobody believes you. It’s not about being about to use the term “married”, it’s about the 1000+ rights that heterosexual couples have that same sex couples do not.
It’s sometimes scary when issues come up the ignorant backwards bible-thumpers really show themselves (yes, I am talking to you Rick)
This just came in on my Twitter feed:
Supreme Court rejects emergency request to halt same-sex weddings in California http://lati.ms/mwjW0
The only aspect of this which truly upsets me is the majority of voters in California passed one thing. Our elected State officials decided to not defend ‘our’ position and the courts sided with the vocal minority. Democracy at its best!
I agree with Conservative thinker. CA voters did vote against this. Gay people won’t make it into heaven. They’re immoral lifestyle isn’t good for society.
@Give me a break (59)
Feel free to follow scripture and not get gay married. That’s the beauty of this decision; it really enforces the doctrine of “Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose.”
@Conservative Thinker (63) The majority of voters passed something that was blatantly unconstitutional and should probably never have even been allowed on the ballot for that reason. It might be more reasonable to put religions in charge of faith based commitment ceremonies and just leave marriage as a government activity.
I’ve been married for over 33 years and feel that gays have the same right to be miserable as the rest of us married folks (and my wife “Gibbs-slaps” me on the back of my head every time I say that). Besides, it’s good for all sorts of business, from florists and venues all the way to divorce lawyers!
Cheers!
CK
Last I heard, Christians believe all judgments should be left up to God.
Sounds a lot like you’re trying to take his job!
