The WC – The Best Fast Food Restaurant

February 27, 2013 12:00 pm · 100 comments

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it!

The “Water Cooler” will be up Monday-Friday in the noon hour.

Yes, we know the words “Best Fast Food” is somewhat of an oxymoron, but we’re asking it anyway!

In your mind, what is the best fast food restaurant?

Talk about it….

ClayDen February 27, 2013 at 12:07 PM

In n Out!
Rubio’s is number two.

Tummy grumble February 27, 2013 at 12:07 PM

In N’ Out. For their consistency of the food and kind employees (or good at pretending to be nice anyhow 😉

JW February 27, 2013 at 12:09 PM

My new favorite is Freebirds Burrito’s in Walnut Creek. I loved the place and I don’t think that it was just the big poster of Peter Fonda & Dennis Hopper on the wall either. I thought this place was good.

marinemom February 27, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Has to be In-N-Out

nonewtaxesinwc February 27, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Close to me in the WC Mooyah gets my vote!

StarFish February 27, 2013 at 12:15 PM

Five Guys for burgers and fries. 100% Beef and any way you want it. lol…Yum!

Peanuts Mommy February 27, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Habit! I am dedicated to eating healthier so can’t have it…but if I was going to cheat…Habit!

NRA #1 fan and member February 27, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Chick Fil A is the best. That spicy chicken sandwich with WAFFLE FRIES are worth my diesel truck idling for 15 minutes waiting for the drive thru!!!!!

Remember: Guns don’t kill…..PEOPLE do!!!!!!

Whaaaat? February 27, 2013 at 12:22 PM

In n Out ? Really? Ate there once,
Not impressed . Chick filet , same
Do like Carl’s grilled fish sandwich.
My fave, El pollo Loco.

Anon777 February 27, 2013 at 12:24 PM

Yes, love Freebirds World Burrito in WC. Also like Panera Bread, Wingstop and Los Panchos in Pacheco. That’s as “fast food” as I’ll get.

another just me February 27, 2013 at 12:26 PM

El Pollo Loco…kind of a healthier version of fast food

Anon February 27, 2013 at 12:28 PM

Panda Express

anon666 February 27, 2013 at 12:38 PM

Taco Bell.

I could eat there every day and be one happy camper.

Teelish February 27, 2013 at 12:42 PM

How has Chik-Fil-A not even been mentioned yet?! They are fantastic!

NutCreek Frontier February 27, 2013 at 12:43 PM

Am kind of digging 5 Guys for an occasional splurge, excellent burgers!

Stivelli February 27, 2013 at 12:44 PM

Oop’s missed the fast food part. The Habit.

Mr. John February 27, 2013 at 12:48 PM

If I had to pick one to keep open while all the others closed: Carl’s Jr. I can get a $6 Low-carb, side salad (or Fried Zucchini) and water and not feel too gross. I can also find plenty on the menu if I’m in the mood to feel gross.

Runner up – Taco Bell for the sake of high school nostalgia.

WC44 February 27, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Any place that will break my crisp $100 bill from the printer.

Clayton Squirrel February 27, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Does Panera count? The one on Treat has a drive-thru! Great everything!

anonmtz February 27, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Los Panchos…Pacheco

try the sope con asada……………

Geezer February 27, 2013 at 1:02 PM

I agree with @JW. I discovered Freebird Burrito while in Texas for a business trip. Now that one is open in W.C. I’m a believer. They are like the Subway Sandwich for Burritos. Build it anyway you want it.

Dragon February 27, 2013 at 1:06 PM

If we’re including short-order, then Hot Dog Palace.

Triple Canopy February 27, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Chick Fil-A !!!

judaspriest February 27, 2013 at 1:12 PM

chickfila all the way , no fast food compares

hmmm... February 27, 2013 at 1:45 PM

1) Taqueria La Plaza – between Willow Pass & Clayton Rd. off Sutter in the FedEx Office parking lot. Great authentic Mexican, great prices.

2) Del Taco red burrito (not authentic Mexican)

3) In-N-Out or 5 Guys – but I never go there because it’s too many calories

4) I’ve never tried Chick-Fil-A but would like to…it’s too bad they are so many calories, but some day I’ll try it.

Rubios fish tacos February 27, 2013 at 1:46 PM

I’ve only had them a couple times, but really enjoyed them. If they were near my office, I’d go often.

davejavu February 27, 2013 at 1:47 PM

Five Guys are kidding? Went there once after a movie, place was a pig sty and the burger was cold. Wish there was a Sonic around here the serve a nice hot burger!

Anon2you February 27, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Love me some In-N-Out, so #1, but the Habit is a close 1A
My kids have given RAVE reviews on Chick-Fill-A but I have not been there yet so I have to defer and say I have heard it is good.

JustMe February 27, 2013 at 1:59 PM

I guess it depends on your definition of ‘fast’ food, but I’m liking the new Papa John’s in Concord. Can’t wait to try Zachary’s in Pleasant Hill.

Tasty and affordable February 27, 2013 at 2:04 PM

Rubios, especially on Tuesday’s. Fish tacos for $1.50!

Em Dubya February 27, 2013 at 2:06 PM

The Counter.

Dorothy February 27, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Chipotle, Chipotle, Chipotle! And it’s healthier than most fried food places. I really like their burrito bowl and they always fix it just as I want it, not how they think it should be done.

The Closer February 27, 2013 at 2:11 PM

Caspers hot dogs in PH. Love me a good dog.

Mark February 27, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Freebirds, Walnut Creek. Tasty burritos.

StarFish February 27, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Not any Fiveguys that I know about. That must have been In-and-Out; the smell itself will kill you!

trlslr February 27, 2013 at 2:21 PM

Mexican Burittos on Monument / Reganti Dr.

LTG February 27, 2013 at 2:39 PM

In-N-Out…hands down is the winner…IMHO. I don’t go any place else that is considered fast food. Five Guys is ok, but wow…expensive for what you get. The same meal I pay $6.72 for at In-N-Out would be over $11.00 at Five Guys…and you have to eat if out of a paper bag…yuck!!!

Peanut Gallery February 27, 2013 at 2:55 PM

No wonder America is so FAT! I love all these people praising fast food.
Enjoy your diabetes and heart disease.
Fat patents = fat kids

@JustMe February 27, 2013 at 2:58 PM

You have to try Zachary’s Pizza. It is very good. Get the deep dish for sure. Just want to warn you that it takes a good half hour to get your pizza made so order a salad or something to hold you over. Don’t go when you are in a hurry.

cvhsgradclassof80 February 27, 2013 at 3:20 PM

Got to be seventeen snack shack, Dennis has the best cheese burger
Yum on the run, for healthy fast food

Captain Concord February 27, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Whole Foods… lunch buffet for which to die.

Anon February 27, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Not sure that I would categorize it as “fast food” but the spinach and mushroom deep dish pizza from Zachary the best thing I have ever eaten.

Rollo Tomasi February 27, 2013 at 3:40 PM

Best Burger Monument Blvd. good service, never overcrowded, fair prices. I try to support local mom and pop’s when they have outstanding quality products and services. La Tapatia for Mexican, they have the best red salsa EVER!

TT February 27, 2013 at 3:45 PM

Chick-fil-a! Big chicken fan and I think they have one of the best chicken sandwiches..

Antler February 27, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Mooyah for burgers, but it’s far enough away that I’m SAFE most of the time.

KFC on Clayton Road.

But I seldom am in the mood for fast food… trying to lose weight is good motivation to cook at home.

J. February 27, 2013 at 4:23 PM

Is MOOYAH over by Sports Basement, across from Heather Farm?

The Closer February 27, 2013 at 4:26 PM

@Peanut Gallery#48

Who has a “patent” on fat. If you’ve got diabetes or heart disease you’ve got bigger problems going on than an occasional trip to a fast food outlet.

lg February 27, 2013 at 4:26 PM

@Peanut Gallery, Chill out!!!! Most people don`t eat fast food every day. It`s a once in a while treat. Los Ponchos is the best. Got to try Chic fil a.

BCuzItzClaycord..... February 27, 2013 at 4:34 PM

Los Ponchos hands down…………..Use to Chivinda but since they closed we are back to Los Ponchos

Always Right February 27, 2013 at 4:36 PM

I agree with Dragon. Hot Dog Palace is the best.

In-n-out is a close second.

ClayDen February 27, 2013 at 4:37 PM

We tried Chick-fil-a; it was greasy and soggy. Ww won’t be going back.

Best burrito: Casa Gourmet Burrito in the Clayton Station shopping center. A definite cut above Freebirds and Chipotle.

Anon February 27, 2013 at 4:38 PM

McDonalds, Taco Bell make my a$$ hurt. In n Out well I spent many hours working on their roofs all over N. Ca and will not eat there because of it.

Steve February 27, 2013 at 4:43 PM

I still like Carl’s Jr

Anamoose February 27, 2013 at 4:50 PM

If they’re making your a$$ hurt your eating them wrong.

Pied February 27, 2013 at 4:53 PM

Dorothy, you are correct! Chipotle for the win.

Five guys, In and Out, Wendy’s, and The Habit are very good too.

Freebirds and Rubio’s were very ho-hum – bland and forgettable.

I'm The Urban Spaceman February 27, 2013 at 5:25 PM

I’ve had nothing but crappy food at Chipotle(although kudos to them for their meats)….overpriced and the worst rice ever…been there 3 times, rice is always undercooked…tried their tacos…cold. ugh.
Mexican food for non-hispanics…I never see Spanish speakers eating there when I pass their place…they know better.

Ancient Mariner February 27, 2013 at 5:33 PM

The best ever was Blazing Burgers in Walnut Creek.
Sadly, it’s no longer there, but it was great!
Their best burger was the GrossBurger, the burger with a bite already taken out of it by the chef to ensure quality! (Actually, it was done with a cookie-cutter).
Herb Caen loved the place.

Some Guy February 27, 2013 at 5:42 PM

Still Diggers. Best burger around. And they don’t get cheap on ya when you order the fries…Diggers!

I'm The Urban Spaceman February 27, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Some Guy reminded me that Diggers makes the best Patty Melt…excellent thick Rye bread, tasty patty, lots of onions.

kiarfy February 27, 2013 at 6:50 PM

Tugboat Fish n Chips in Pleasant Hill!

Love:-) February 27, 2013 at 7:24 PM

In n out

Dragon February 27, 2013 at 7:30 PM

I’ve STILL not been to Digger’s! Hot Dog Palace is a 2 mile walk from my house, so I can tell myself I’ve “earned” a burger and fries when I’m there.

I’ll have to get down to Digger’s at some point, to compare.

::plots route on google maps::

Antler February 27, 2013 at 8:01 PM

J at #56 ~ ~ ~ Yes, you’re in the correct shopping center. Mooyah’s is over toward the west end of the center….near the shoe store.

Gladys Kravitz February 27, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Chick Fil A !!!

Antler February 27, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Dragon, please do not walk by yourself to Diggers.

TIME February 27, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Chick-Fil-A is so gross how can so many people like it. They have all these claims of natural and it’s filled with more MSG and other products then most Fast Food.

I vote for the Counter in Walnut Creek (Bison or Turkey Burger) It’s a little expensive but it’s good.

Mimi (original) February 27, 2013 at 8:29 PM

1. In-n-Out sucks!!! 2. Diggers is not fast food. 3. Chick fil A is overpriced. 4. Taco Bell is the only way to go.

Babs February 27, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Nations, love their fries and pies. Fuddruckers, did I spell that right?
Tugboat. Min’s makes a great hamburger, too.

I really wish for a Arby’s, and a Church’s chicken.

Has anyone ever actually been to a Sonic????????

anon February 27, 2013 at 9:18 PM

Sonic is great. One just opened off I think the Davis st. exit in Fairfield.

Nations is batting around .300 for correctly made orders lately. I have to sit at the counter and carefully watch them make my food. I haven’t tried to order on the phone at nations since the girl that answered the phone put me on hold and forgot about me. The phone was still sitting on the counter, off the hook, when I got to nations.

Min’s is okay, the food is good but the portions are a little on the small side for the price.

Chester E. Kitty February 27, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Taco Bells is my favorite. Although if there was a Sonic in the area, that would be my favorite!!! Wish we could get them in the Bay Area. YUM!!

Enfield303 February 27, 2013 at 9:51 PM

I think the closest Sonic is in American Canyon.

Starfish February 27, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Now Antler, you know when Dragon gets to Diggers he is going to “dig in”. It’s in the cards. lol hehehehe……..

Need To Define "Fast Food" February 27, 2013 at 10:12 PM

I personally consider any chain restaurant that is known to utilize a drive through window as “fast food”. If it is the norm to walk in and sit down (AKA Five Guys), I think it is the next step up.

With that said, In N’ Out is the ultimate lemming test of Claycord. Most people likely don’t realize we had the same exact burgers all throughout the 90’s, on the same street in fact, that did not command long lines (and it eventually closed because of that). It was called “Run Burger Run”. SAME EXACT BURGER.

…and just like In N’ Out, it was kind of a scam burger (but at least RBR was cheap). Next time you hit In N’ Out I double dog dare you to order an extra burger with nothing on it. Just meat and bun. You’ll be shocked how much burger is (or should say, is NOT) actually there. The typical burger there is more like a BLT, but triple the lettuce and tomatoes.

This is why Jack N’ The Box down the way is still king of the drive through burger in this area.

P.S. You want a good burger, period? Fast food or not? My recs:

#1 George’s in Walnut Creek (Bring Cash)
#2 The Counter in Walnut Creek (Bring An Ambulance)
#3 Five Guys in Pleasant Hill-* (Bring 2-3 people to help with your bag of fries)
#4 Fuddruckers

Honorable mentions are the 1/2 pound place on Clayton and Sugarplum.

Honorable mention X2 to Hot Dog Palace. Not burger related, but has (or had?) best cheese fries ever.

*=Best hamburger from a place that forces you to choose well done. Typically if your burger isn’t medium rare, it is ruined…but this place makes non-pink seem delicious.

Dennis February 27, 2013 at 10:21 PM

I once had a friend (vegetarian) at a drive thru order a triple whopper, no meat. I guess she thought they tripled everything but the bun ;(

CatWoman February 27, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Why does everyone think of burgers as the only fast food?

CatWoman February 27, 2013 at 10:23 PM

Fudrucker’s makes good ostrich burgers!

J.M. February 27, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Buckhorn Grill in WC is awesome! Not your typical fast-food place, but I’ve never had to wait longer than at in n out. The only problem is the parking.

Dr. Jellyfinger February 27, 2013 at 10:44 PM

I can never get in to Chic-Fil-A they are always too busy & I’m always on the run. Still have not sampled their wares….. Evie’s Hamburgers in the Encina Grande Shopping Center gets my vote. Good food, good prices & fast service. I give them a thumbs up. If Scoots were here he’d vote Popeye’s (spicy fried chicken with red beans & rice).

Laura Zah February 27, 2013 at 10:46 PM

Jack in the Box has good egg rolls. Get a single Jumbo Jack for $1.59 .

Charles-the-cat February 27, 2013 at 11:04 PM

I remember Chic-Fil-A tasting better when I was a kid growing up in the southeast. My memories of the flavor may be nostalgia but I know for a fact that the waffle fries didn’t use to be soggy.

My list would include El Molino (bionicos baby!), Chipotle and Five Guys. I haven’t heard of Freebirds before. I’ll definitely give them a try.

dinkydau February 27, 2013 at 11:32 PM

We need a Popeye’s Chicken here. I wish the Krispy Kreme building would have had a Popeye’s in there. I went to Chick fila once. I had the regular sandwich and dont know what the big deal is. Another chicken sandwich. wont go there again.
In and Out always has hot fries and good burgers.
Five Guys is a “me too” place that wants to be like In and Out. The burgers are so messy and small.

OLD GRINGO February 27, 2013 at 11:39 PM

In-N-Out all the way also McDonalds and Caspers Hot Dogs.

J. February 28, 2013 at 1:35 AM

For fastest food, try Sweet-Tomatoes. You step in, grab your food and eat. It couldn’t be faster (or fresher)

BCuzItzClaycord..... February 28, 2013 at 7:40 AM

Babs – the closest Sonic is in American Canyon by the Super WalMart….Food is good but the various Lime-Aides are FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!

Orig. SFer February 28, 2013 at 9:18 AM

All of the above are okay, but i still have to have a good ole “Big Mac” every so often.

nytemuvr February 28, 2013 at 10:27 AM

Jollys…..sorry I’m dreaming still….damn Ambien…..

Cowellian February 28, 2013 at 10:58 AM

I don’t much care for Sonic. Automotive dining hasn’t suited me since my teenage years.

Bubbles February 28, 2013 at 4:44 PM

Chick-Fil-A used to be amazing back in the south. When it got huge and spread across the country they cut so many corners. It’s nasty now. I don’t see the big draw.

Counter in WC is great!

just hatin concord February 28, 2013 at 7:13 PM

in and out sucks. too crowded, no parking. the service is very slow – even if you order inside. and there is no room to sit anywhere. perhaps because everyone there is “extra large”

Teeg February 28, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Mooyah burger for sure!

Babs February 28, 2013 at 7:58 PM

I have never been inside In and Out…use the drive thru and it’s great very fast and never get order wrong….also I like that they don’t over salt the fries. But the burgers are on the small side.

Been meaning to try the 1/4 Pounder place on Clayton but keep forgetting they only take cash.

Oh, on the other comment about Min’s….yes, it’s Min’s not Mim’s….Min’s gives big amounts of food.

Not sure if I like Wendy’s when they chgd the fries

I agree Taco Bell is best bang for buck.
