Imagine this. You’re on a nice morning walk on the trail behind the Clayton Safeway when you suddenly come upon….a dumped mattress. Lovely.

Stop littering!

1 pigpen January 21, 2013 at 4:08 PM

I think it looks nice. Needs some old toilets too.

2 concord original January 21, 2013 at 4:16 PM

I noticed you just left it there!

3 Trash January 21, 2013 at 4:17 PM

Stop trashing the place!

4 anon January 21, 2013 at 4:18 PM

I was wondering where I left my bed last night.

5 Cowellian January 21, 2013 at 4:22 PM

Curb service?

6 Equal Rights January 21, 2013 at 4:26 PM

Don’t worry, this is Obum-ma care. We will help all of the deprived and set them straight. This is Con Cord where ALL come first but the paying. The City Council will solve everything, just give them 4 MORE YEARS.

7 Betty Sanchez January 21, 2013 at 4:34 PM

O Well, THE City is off again. I quess no free pick ups today. DAMM CITY WORKERS. Council and CM Valiery get off your high horse and PICK THIS STUFF UP, You are my city servent! I Demand service. Tell your gay boy who runs PW to get out of the office and do his job.

8 Homeless Bill of Rights January 21, 2013 at 4:43 PM

My cousin told me that his friend’s brother’s teammate might have read that the Homeless Bill of Rights will guarantee an outdoor mattress for each and every homeless person. Looks like Claycord is setting the trend once again!

9 J. January 21, 2013 at 4:56 PM

I assume it can be tracked back to its rightful owner by running its Sleep-Number?

10 Tea bagger party January 21, 2013 at 5:02 PM

I thought it was legally dumped derp

11 anonanonagain January 21, 2013 at 5:15 PM

Probably was being transported to a homeless encampment somewhere. The shopping cart can only hold so much crap……

12 dk January 21, 2013 at 5:22 PM

I went to the mayor last week with a desparate plea for help and my email was completely ignored yet I see a stupid story like this. Nice job mayor !!!

13 dk January 21, 2013 at 5:23 PM

You are hearlessd !!!

14 Elwood January 21, 2013 at 5:36 PM

An abandoned mattress in Clayton?

The horror, the horror!

Quick, drag it into Concord!

15 anon January 21, 2013 at 6:08 PM

@Elwood,
Not to worry, there is a lovely pile of junk on Ayers, near Clayton Road.

16 judaspriest January 21, 2013 at 6:23 PM

i think i saw the rent a center truck from pittsburg pick it up at dusk and bring it back to their showroom a little febreeze and they have a beautiful queen sized ultra firm for easy lease payments of only $56 mo for a short 188 month term with of course the right to excercise a purchase of said mattress when you have made the 125th payment at the full orig retail price

17 ChampagneKitty January 21, 2013 at 6:23 PM

Hey, Betty Sanchez! This mattress is in Clayton, not Concord. Quit looking for excuses to make homophobic comments.

18 Anon January 21, 2013 at 6:36 PM

You maybe too native to write this blog, if you think those who did this are reading it.

19 ddt January 21, 2013 at 6:39 PM

if you call code enforcement they will pick it up , I also recall a link on the city page to report stuff like this.

20 FungSchwehey January 21, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Colors are all wrong it clashes.

21 donald January 21, 2013 at 6:55 PM

And this is important – – – why – mayor?????

22 Pee Wee Herman January 21, 2013 at 7:18 PM

GASP!!!!!! they tore off the tag that says “Do Not Remove this tag”!!!!!!!

23 Mutts January 21, 2013 at 7:20 PM

Bed bugs?? by the way, it’s a free country and if people want to be homophobic it is their right. And, I guess I want to be, too, cause I’m tired of that agenda being shoved down the publics throat. No one asked you what you do in your bedroom (or bathhouse)

24 Fritzhugh Ludlow January 21, 2013 at 7:24 PM

A bullet was found in the mattress , it is suspected to be a case of Mattress-side

25 Jerk January 21, 2013 at 7:26 PM

What’s the going rate at the Dumps – $25.00 per mattress?
There’s your reason why. Everybody has to be a millionaire in America.

26 Parsnip January 21, 2013 at 7:31 PM

@#21 — I kind of consider it a good reminder that we have developed into a society of lazy-a$$ed pigs.

Does anyone remember how the highway medians in this area actually used to be quite pretty? With beautiful shrubs, flowers dividing the stretches and making driving more pleasurable? Simple geraniums — even they’d lessen the eyesore.

But, no — our elected ones won’t even earmark money for that. (Speaking of money, did anyone check the mattress to see if said pig mistakenly trashed the wrong one?)

27 Dr. Jellyfinger January 21, 2013 at 7:48 PM

Once again, a breaking news story missed by the networks & scooped by Claycord!

28 ChampagneKitty January 21, 2013 at 8:46 PM

to #22: LOL! My brother and I loved that movie! He gave me a copy of it as a gift.

29 Trash January 21, 2013 at 9:19 PM

Now you have to figure out whose it is. lol

30 Dumpster Dave & Hambone January 21, 2013 at 9:33 PM

Wahl we jus might clean it up or maybe not, don’t know yet. Ah guess we’ll have to sleep on it.

31 Pegasus January 21, 2013 at 9:44 PM

When I was very young, and still knew everything, I left an old junk mattress outside a Salvation Army store late at night.
I now understand that was appalling and have donated many articles of clothing and household items as penance.
I figure we were square years ago but still donate. Payin’ it forward for future misdeeds.

32 Solomon January 22, 2013 at 6:29 AM

Pegasus… your years of trifling penance matter not. The only way, THE ONLY WAY, to atone for your old mattress crime, is to go down to the back of Safeway and retrieve this old mattress.

33 Brian Griffin January 22, 2013 at 7:08 AM

Great place for a nap during your busy day! And I agree the Mayor is hearlessed!

34 Beaver January 22, 2013 at 7:34 AM

It beats finding a dead body? Is that supposed to be funny? What if that dead body was a member of your family?

35 V January 22, 2013 at 7:44 AM

Mattresses in Clayton, couches in Concord. Guess we’re setting up the homeless hotel

36 IUsedToLiveInConcord January 22, 2013 at 7:53 AM

Hey, on that dead guy story, I went to Clayton Valley with the Baldwin brothers………I think there were 3 of them…….is that one of them?……anybody know?

37 Connie Dobbs January 22, 2013 at 8:03 AM

Someone’s packing sand.
Every dead body was a family member. Are you saying you’d be blase about finding someone who didn’t matter to you personally?

38 Parsnip January 22, 2013 at 9:14 AM

@ChampagneKitty #17 — LOL. “…City servent. I Demand service.”

Betty Sanchez sounds like a dominatrix wannabe — that is once she gets her front teeth replaced courtesy of the guy who belted her in the mouth.

39 hlw January 22, 2013 at 9:43 AM

There’s stuff like this scattered all over Claycord. I passed by a pair of tires on Mendocino yesterday (wide 18in-ers so it wasn’t for an economy car). Concord Neighborhood services does what they can, but it seems to be a very disorganized, understaffed group that is not very proactive in their tactics, but instead relying solely on complaints from citizens and businesses (reactive).

Disposal fees like those for batteries (and even CRV) do actually work to motivate recycling and proper disposal, but it’s a headache to manage and these are small items — mattresses and other large items (or HazMat like paint) is a bit harder.

I’m wondering if new mattresses sold (sans delivery/removal) should come with a refundable disposal fee (do they now? It’s been a while since I’ve purchased). Unclaimed disposal fees could fund pickup of items like this. Local disposal services like WM could also step into the transaction by making disposal easier (and participate in the disposal program/fee) — not everyone is going to strap a mattress to the car and head to the dump. Sure, more red-tape, but we’ve seen success in other areas (CRV) and the situation isn’t getting better.

Shame also works (like some of the parking photos here on Claycord). http://www.seeclickfix.com is one way to make things like this more public and visible.

40 Lean Forward January 22, 2013 at 11:25 AM

With fees like these, dumping in our communities is only going to increase.

41 Fill That Tote January 22, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Just need a little patience a razor knife, saws all, and some wire cutters. Then you give it to them, a bit each week, steel springs go in recycle etc.

42 anon January 22, 2013 at 12:22 PM

A household setup for free. I saw a recliner and some other odd pieces of furniture along Ayers.

@ C. Kitty
If you liked that movie, you may like Mr. Bean or some of Rowan Atkins skits on youtube.

43 The Mamba January 22, 2013 at 12:35 PM

This is perfect, once in a while I’ll be out jogging and feel like a quick nap to refresh…

44 Bubba January 22, 2013 at 3:24 PM

Take DNA samples from the stains and track down the owner.

45 David Wall January 22, 2013 at 7:21 PM

I work in that shopping center and work hard to police the illegal dumping in the back. Alot of freaks walk up and down the back of the building.

46 ChampagneKitty January 22, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Thank you anon #42! I will check him out on YouTube.

47 anon January 24, 2013 at 9:27 PM
