The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has declared Saturday a Spare the Air day in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This is the fourth day in a row the BAAQMD has declared a Spare the Air day.

The following information is from the BAAQMD:

A Winter Spare the Air Alert has been issued for Saturday, January 19, 2013, in the Bay Area.

Wood burning is banned both indoors and outdoors on January 19, 2013, for the full 24 hours.

Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy. It is illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood or other solid fuels in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire-pits, or other wood-burning devices. This wood-burning ban will be in effect for Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano Counties. (Visit www.sparetheair.org/Stay-Informed/Todays-Air-Quality/Reporting-Zones.aspx to see if your city is located within the Air District.)

Winter air pollution is mainly caused by particulates or soot pollution from wood smoke. Smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly.

For more information about the Wood Burning Rule, or to check before you burn, visit www.sparetheair.org or call 1-877-4NO-BURN.

You can also call 1-800-430-1515 and register to receive automatic phone calls when a Winter Spare the Air Alert has been called.

To see the current air quality forecast visit www.sparetheair.org.

Download our FREE Spare the Air iPhone/Android application for alert notifications, local air quality forecasts, podcasts and several tools to help reduce air pollution.

Thank you for doing your part to Spare the Air!

This AirAlert is provided by your Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

This has NOTHING to do with the high pressure ridge that has settled in over the area causing stagnant air. It’s a conspiracy. You want proof? This is the FOURTH day in a row. The 4th letter in the alphabet is D, as in Democrat Dictatorship, which is exactly what the BAAQMD was set up to impose in our lives. MILLIONS OF LITTLE OLD GRANDMOTHERS HAVE ALREADY FROZEN TO DEATH…. HOW MANY MORE MUST DIE BEFORE WE RISE UP AND RECLAIM OUR FREEDOM?!?!?!?

Can anyone explain to me how they can put a ban on woodburning based on the air quality when the day in question hasnt arrived yet.

4 Killjoy January 18, 2013 at 4:15 PM

Well Boys and Girls, some parts of North Concord are going to be without power tonight because PG&E is changing a transformer.
Power is supposed to be out from 10pm until 4am. This is in the area of the Drive In Theater.

I suggest that these people, if they don’t want to freeze, they burn if the they got em.
Unfortunately, pellet stoves will shut off when the power goes out.
The only way you can stay warm, is to burn real firewood. And the BAAQM folks can’t do a darn thing about it. It’s their own rules. If it’s your only way to stay warm, it’s allowed.

7 I'm turing BLUE January 18, 2013 at 4:22 PM

How else does a made up agency justify it’s existence?

I’m turning blue holding my breath. I light the BBQ in about 10 minutes.

8 MikeT January 18, 2013 at 4:35 PM

The BAAQC says you cannot have a fire in your wood burning stove on a spare the air day. This is not true. My stove works just as well on a STA day as any other day!!!

9 mike mac January 18, 2013 at 4:37 PM

I’ll be hunting. Perhaps I can clear the air of some ducks.

10 Shuley January 18, 2013 at 4:38 PM

Good thing my LOPI is so efficient, you can barely see any smoke rising from the chimney…

11 David January 18, 2013 at 4:40 PM

and again the the smog level is well below the 50ppm that the noaa and epa consider to be unhealthy.

12 Bha.. January 18, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Spare this!! Once its over I ‘m going to burn day and night!

13 Bobfished January 18, 2013 at 4:53 PM

The following statement taken from the above alert is not true! “Winter air pollution is mainly caused by particulates or soot pollution from wood smoke.” The BAAQMD says that only 25% or less of the winter air pollution comes from wood smoke. Because of these inaccuracies people believe that if it wasn’t for wood smoke everything would be fine, not true. 75% of the wintertime pollution comes from sources other than wood fires! 75%!!!! No one changes their habits around the other sources which causes the air to remain bad even without wood fires.

I didn’t know about the transformer change, Killjoy. I hope that won’t affect me.

15 Concerned Citzen January 18, 2013 at 5:08 PM

I’m not surprised. When I took a walk this morning, the air was very still and a bit stinky.

What is up with the air Nazis at BAAQMD?

This afternoon the view of Mt. Diablo in the clear air was absolutely stunning.

UPDATE: BAAQMD HELP WANTED

I’ve been holding off for a while but now it’s time. Please notice that the “Major” runs an advertisement, usually on the top left of the page from the CARB. So I suppose that he is required to run these notices as part of the agreement for the money he gets from the ad. OK, fine. The “Major” needs money to keep this place going, I’t aint free folks. So how about we just all shut up and burn or not and leave the owner of this site to stay alive so we can all have our fun.
Regards, Jojo

What I don’t understand is why they sometimes call STA days when it’s raining. Doesn’t the rain wash away particulate matter?

21 Another BAAQMD Day? January 18, 2013 at 6:28 PM

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……………………………………………..

22 Bobfished January 18, 2013 at 6:28 PM

Most of the winter time PM 2.5 does not originate from wood smoke! 75% or more comes from sources other than wood smoke! So what are we doing to reduce that 75%, nothing.

23 JoJo, NoNo January 18, 2013 at 6:53 PM

JoJo baby: no no no. Mayors gotta do what a mayors gotta do. Been saying all week about the HATE SMOKE man. This acorns gotta grow to an oak. We gotta wake up the people and let the haters show who they are. People gotta know that smoke can wake you up or put you down. Me and the old lady get down with Smokey the Bong on weekends to check our heads – magical medical mist needs now wood and comes from buds of sunshine. Hate smoke comes from murdering Mother nature. Gotta let the people know.

24 Smoky January 18, 2013 at 6:57 PM

My a-hole neighbors has decided to work on a car tonight filling the air with smoky exhaust! Think I’m going too let my dog leave a little present on his lawn!

25 anon January 18, 2013 at 7:26 PM

Cops can’t arrest you for violating a misdemeanor unless they see you committing the crime. How can Bay Area Air Quality Management District fine you unless they actually see smoke coming from your chimney? What are the odds that you will get caught?

26 twallace January 18, 2013 at 7:43 PM

these people are a joke air nazi’s

27 Mutts January 18, 2013 at 7:52 PM

ANOTHER scare the air day? More regulations coming, I’m sure.
I won’t rat on anyone if I know they have a fire going, this is what the govt. would love.

28 JoJo, NoNo January 18, 2013 at 7:53 PM

So much hate babies. Gonna poison your minds. Tune in and turn on man.

29 Achtnon January 18, 2013 at 8:42 PM

You reap what you sow.

30 Cowellian January 18, 2013 at 8:54 PM

Alright, Jojo,
The first time you spewed that nonsense, I assumed it was simple ignorance on your part. But since you continue to spread an untrue story, you must be either malicious or willfully ignorant.

31 CLAYCORD.com January 18, 2013 at 9:04 PM

@Cowellian, Thanks.

@JoJo, It’s “Mayor”, not “Major”. Yes, the BAAQMD purchases an ad from me, but they do not require that I run the story. There are a lot of people out there besides you, and some of those people like to know when there’s a spare the air day. If you don’t like it, then keep scrolling down the page.
