The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office released the following information on the murder of a man at a Concord homeless camp on Wednesday night.
The autopsy on 47-year-old Jerald Nagle has been completed. The cause of death is listed as asphyxia due to strangulation.
On Wednesday night, Homicide Detectives from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Investigation Division arrested 38-year-old James Riley in connection with this homicide which occurred in unincorporated Concord.
At about 8PM, Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched to a “MED-PD” call on the northbound I-680 on-ramp at Concord Avenue. When Deputies arrived, firefighters were performing lifesaving measures on Nagle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Deputy Sheriffs and Detectives later learned that Riley and Nagle got into a fight. Riley was taken into custody and booked into the main county jail for homicide. His is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Both of them are transients. The investigation is continuing.
