Theft of Campaign Signs Over the Weekend

October 29, 2012 11:10 am · 47 comments

It’s close to the election, and it never fails to turn ugly when we get about a week away from voting.

Five people emailed today to report the theft of Romney/Ryan signs from their homes and property in Concord, Clayton & Pleasant Hill, and two people from Concord emailed us today saying their Concord City Council signs were also stolen.

Anybody else out there have their signs stolen from their yards or property?

Shellac October 29, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Manifestation of the great desperation felt by democrats.

Bilbo baggins October 29, 2012 at 11:28 AM

Just keep your options to your self and off the lawn and you won’t have this problem

Mary Ann October 29, 2012 at 11:29 AM

Our family has 2 homes that both had Romney/Ryan signs taken. I am thinking of having my son professionally make signs and go out in force with our own signs. Any one interested 🙂 I have never stood on the corners with signs, but i am not happy that someone took my right to put up signs on my own property. Romney/ Ryan Haters 🙁

twallace October 29, 2012 at 11:32 AM

just trying to clean up the city

JW October 29, 2012 at 11:39 AM

This, in my opinion is a violation of their civil rights. These people have a right to support whomever they choose and I should not be able to hamper that. It makes me angry and whoever stole these signs, please know that you are not only a thief, but you are a Nazi and should be tried as one. We do not have to agree with the choice for candidate but we should at least agree that everyone has a first amendment right. Shame!

Mr. John October 29, 2012 at 11:43 AM

I’m betting that 95% of the time these thefs are not politically motivated. Most of the time it is a bunch of teenagers that think they’re being funny. I distinctly remember back in the late 80s when a group of hooligans stole hundreds of signs for some measure and planted all of them in the lawn outside what is now Concord Community Pool on Cowell Rd. That was clearly an ‘anti-boredom’ activity, not a political one.

Mutts October 29, 2012 at 11:44 AM

I don’t have signs but here’s a sign, the Democrats are doing this and it speaks of their character….(and fear).

Jeff October 29, 2012 at 11:45 AM

Just shows how scared people are the Obama is going to lose.

It’s pretty sad when you are so stuck in your ways that you have to tear down others to make a point.

It’s probably the union thugs that Obama supports that are doing this. NOTE – not all union members are thugs. But those that are sure come out around election time….

Patricia Hill October 29, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Virginia Fuller, with no financial support, bought 7 signs for $100 each and they were stolen. That’s against the law!

Patty October 29, 2012 at 11:56 AM

I had my Romney/Ryan sign stolen from my yard in Hercules a few weeks ago. I knew that would happen, so I ordered extras. So far the second one has not been stolen. I will take it down during Trick or Treat, because it would be too much temptation on that day, and because I just want the kids to have fun. I will put it back out the next day though.
In 2004 all 3 of our cars were keyed due to our Veterans for Bush bumper stickers. In 2008, my Rudy Giuliani bumper stickers were defaced with profanity. These two instances happened when parked in front of our home in Walnut Creek at the time.

Howard K Mullins III October 29, 2012 at 12:00 PM

Thieves be damned.

There is no excuse for some scum taking others peoples belongings.

I am heading out for another box of shot gun shells. Come on by scum, I could use a little target practice.

Attn: Bleeding hearts, go to he!!.

Beacon October 29, 2012 at 12:04 PM

What do Romney and Birsan have in common?

carguy1963 October 29, 2012 at 12:13 PM

A bunch of us in high school went out one night and took a bunch of signs, and placed them on the front lawn of our high school…..bigtime trouble they where within 100 feel of the polls….man was that an ass chewing

Anon October 29, 2012 at 12:19 PM

ah yes, the tolerance and open-mindedness of the left.

Pyrrhus October 29, 2012 at 12:20 PM

The facts are people are stealing Romney/Ryan signs as well as Obama/Biden signs. (There is a story about a mother and her son stealing signs in Texas) Let’s face it, there are idiots that are trying to suppress the political opinions of those they oppose. I don’t care what political party they represent, they are a disgrace to this country and should be convicted with more than just a misdemeanor theft.

As far as political signs go, I hate them but accept that it is the right of the individuals to post them. I would like to see some kind of city ordinance on these signs where the one’s that create the sign must have contact information on it. If the signs aren’t on private property they have to clean up the sign within X amount of days or face littering fines (per sign). I’m sure that will help bring some needed revenue to some cities.

Blah Blah blah October 29, 2012 at 12:23 PM

funny I had my car keyed when I have had my Obama magnet on and have had one stolen too hmm. Oh wait that is just because people suck.

On a side bar my facebook feed is an anti Obama ad but it is only two people doing it (my two very republican friends) I think that they are scared. you know since all of the polls and analysts favor Obama for the win, except the ones from their far right sites (and we all know how unbiased those are). 😀

Lori October 29, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Not a Romney fan but everyone has a right to their opinion. Hate thieves no matter what they’re stealing. Shellac, no not desperate and Jeff, no not scared. It will be what it will be and we will all have to live with the voting results no matter who we vote for.

Wisecracker October 29, 2012 at 12:42 PM

The first thing I am wondering is, how many of these campaign signs you see planted on the front lawns of home were done with the permission of the homeowner? Drive down Cowell Road and you’ll see what I am talking about.

In my opinion, it’s litter and that’s all it is. Can’t wait for the elections to be over so they can pick up their crap. And, yes, I’ll be one of those who calls the campaign offices to let them know they didn’t not remove their signs in a timely manner or if they missed some.

my boss says I'm A BAD Influence October 29, 2012 at 12:43 PM

Too bad, don’t have a front lawn. Would put a Romney Ryan sign up and wire in a motion sensor to the sprinkler system.

Mika October 29, 2012 at 12:43 PM

No missing Whitmarsh? Peterson? Oaks?

Elwood October 29, 2012 at 12:56 PM

I had a large sign on the tailgate of my pickup for a candidate who was not popular with the Democrat/Labor mob.

My tires were slashed.

Dorothy Englund October 29, 2012 at 12:58 PM

I made up about ten signs two years ago that said “Not PHPD.” The signs were yellow arrows that pointed at the POA signs for Michael Harris and Sue Angeli. All ten were stolen within 24 hours of putting them up (most of them disappeared sometime between midnight and 6:00 am. Someone spotted a woman walking off with one of the signs and reported the vehicle license number to the PHPD. PHPD ran the license and confronted the suspect at her home (the sign was leaning against her van). The District Attorney wouldn’t pursue the case “In the Interest of Justice.”

.... October 29, 2012 at 1:17 PM

LOL what did they expect, put up a Romney sign and your lucky you dont get egged

To each their own October 29, 2012 at 1:17 PM

I think the stealing is wrong not to mention pointless. Everyone by now (hopefully) knows who they are voting for so taking the signs won’t change anyones voting decision come election day anyhow, so again it is pointless.

Vote for who you want to vote for and leave others property alone in the process. You don’t have to agree with them and if you don’t it doesn’t give you the right to remove something from their property. That is called THEFT.

Smokey October 29, 2012 at 1:37 PM

I still have a McCain/Palin sign in my front yard. Been there for 4 years. No one seems to want it.

Matty October 29, 2012 at 1:42 PM

I feel Mr.John hit it on the head. This is clearly teenagers being teenagers. Kids get bored and see signs as fair game. I have a hard time picturing a bunch of adults going around stealing peoples signs as if it would do anything to change the out come of the election (besides we all know California is going to go the the democrats in the electoral college)

To Mr.Mullins if you really have the time to threaten people with a shotgun over a piece of cardboard, then you clearly have more free time then problems on your hand. But hey, great job at trying to escalate it to violence.

What I want to know is “Are all these politically passionate people who hang these signs everywhere going to bother to take them down after the elections, or just let them hang out there as litter?”

anon October 29, 2012 at 1:44 PM

We were very tempted to add “Harold &” to the Kumar signs. Perhaps we’ll wait until after the election….

anon October 29, 2012 at 1:46 PM

Pyrrhus – signs must be taken down by the candidate or the candidate’s committee within a certain number of days after the election. I believe that is 10 or 20 days. That applies only to public property, of course. Stupid people can keep their bumperstickers for years even after their candidate proves to be just opposite what he promised.

jerry jenkinson October 29, 2012 at 1:51 PM

@ Dorothy Englund. Maybe they took your signs didn’t like you. You are a self proclaimed know it all. What you need is a man toy to mellow you out a bit so you smile and be nice to everyone..

Palermo October 29, 2012 at 1:55 PM

I think all the signs are a waste of time, does anybody change their opinion of who to vote for after seeing signs? Even worse is when they don’t remove them after the election and we get to watch them slowly disintegrate

Elwood October 29, 2012 at 2:17 PM

Spartan Dad is a troll.

I’ll bet he’s pleasuring himself right now because he saw his name here.

Dorothy Englund October 29, 2012 at 2:48 PM

@jerry jenkinson-

I do smile and I am nice to everyone. I’m sorry if you are offended by any of the facts I posted on this thread or others.

Furthermore, I can’t possibly be a “self proclaimed know it all” [sic] because I have never proclaimed any such thing about myself or anyone else for that matter.

However, I will proclaim that you obviously are not a know-it-all (or anything even close).

And, I am still smiling.

Blah Blah blah October 29, 2012 at 3:21 PM

@anon #28

glad to know I am not the only one. 😀

Finally Hopeful October 29, 2012 at 3:31 PM

We have a camera on our yard so I hope they do come to steal our signs. They will have a huge surprise.

Horse'n Around October 29, 2012 at 3:47 PM

@ Elwood ……LMAO!!!!!

Killjoy October 29, 2012 at 4:03 PM

@ Howard K Mullins III

Lemme buy you a beer. 🙂

debdvo October 29, 2012 at 5:05 PM

The 3rd comment from the top reminds me of Mitt Romney’s ” and Ann drives a couple of cadillacs” line.

Frank C. October 29, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Repugs secretly steal Romney signs so they can fire up voters to turn out. that is an old tactic.

anonymous October 29, 2012 at 5:47 PM

One you all find your signs call Concord’s Mayor Ron Leone. He has an official fingerprinting kit! He’ll help you catch the perps.

debdvo October 29, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Thx anonymous..I forgot all about that fingerprint kit from last election…ha!

Craig Cannon October 29, 2012 at 6:52 PM

This happens every two years. These thieves are too stupid to know California is Liberal Central. The Delegates always seem to go to the Dems. Whomever we support, it’s an extension of our freedom of speech. If we want to advertise our private affairs like “who we will vote for, I’m a Republican/Democrat or Independent”, that’s our right. The Government hasn’t taken that right away—–YET—-Think about it, when you vote next week! Petty, compared to Sandi’s destruction on the East Coast. I Bet there are millions of signs being whisked away from lawns by that Witch! If I see one of these sign stealing barf bags get hooked-up by the law, I’ll make sure I share a pic with you fine Claycordians.

Sign of the Times October 29, 2012 at 6:58 PM

I saw a political sign that was old and still up.
“Palin/Bachmann 2012- It’s a No Brainer!!”

speaking of signs October 29, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Hey Kumar, the guy running for City Council. First, I get edgy when someone has a slogan like yours, “Vote For A Better Life.” Just sounds too much like someone trying to appeal to what we already have an overabundance of, which are lazy, slobbish, stupid people waiting around for the govt to take care of them. So yeah, I was THINKING that, but then it was confirmed when you rolled out your new signs, the ones with you and Dear Leader Odummy on there. Thank you for clearing it up…he sucks, you suck, and I would NEVER vote for you.

CB October 29, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Hmmm….sounds like the democrats feeling entitled to take what others worked for as usual….

Trade October 29, 2012 at 10:37 PM

Well I guess we should get used to stealing if Romney wins! The middle class will be footing the bill for the rich.

@Mary Ann you are killing me. We have signs in ALL our homes across the US. Blah Blah Blah. If this is your biggest problem you need to get a life. I see why you are voting for Romney. I hear you can get a great deal on real estate in Utah! Signs will have no problem staying up there.

Vote Libertarian October 29, 2012 at 11:16 PM

Aren’t there laws about putting signs up on Utility poles, private fences without owners permissions, shopping mall parking lots, etc. Nobody reads the things anyway, you are going by so fast in your car. Found one on a sidewalk that was left over from the 2010 campaign. Just a lot of mess to clean up. The more signs I see the less I’m likely to vote for someone; the same for those robocalls. Also have little tolerance for listing endorsements from the usual suspects….seems like the Democrats will endorse anyone who claims to have a D next to their name.

LoriesStories October 30, 2012 at 11:01 AM

The current mayor of Walnut Creek has an obnoxioius truck with giant signs by our house. Just for being obnoxious I will not vote for him.
