ANOTHER Giant Boom Heard in Claycord

April 24, 2012 21:12 pm · 185 comments

Who just heard the big giant explosion in Claycord?

We’re getting reports mostly from North Concord, but also from Clayton, Pleasant Hill & Martinez.

Apparently a bright flash was also seen.

UPDATE, 9:25pm: The police have received several calls, but they don’t know what it was or where it came from.

101 Realquick April 24, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Likely a large Firecracker of some sort. Has nearby city law enforcements or anyone been investigating these periodical loud booms? seems to be happening a lot and know solid answers. My mind is starting to wonder IF this is something hush hush – Naval Weapon Station underground projects…that job went quiet.

102 Nick April 24, 2012 at 9:55 PM

ChampagneKitty, yep. I’m on Thunderbird.

103 Roskelley April 24, 2012 at 9:57 PM

sounds like everyone here is my neighbor. howdily doodly neighborinos ! @N6th I heard that car driving fast as well. Its not unusual to hear cars racing down N6th at 1, 2, 3 am . Irritating.

104 Ticklebritches April 24, 2012 at 9:58 PM

We live right next to the Naval Weapon station and there has been a lot of activity going on out there lately. As of now, the train is running and I havent heard that darn train in motion in quite some time. Peculiar how much activity is going on out there the night of a “sonic boom.” Somethings fishy…. Has anyone else been wondering about the recent activity in the Naval Weapon Station?

105 anonamom April 24, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Just happened to be sitting at computer, facing open window on Fitzpatrick. It was one big fireworks. Heard the hiss, looked up just in time to see it go off. I would guess mid block of Baker. Possibly as far over as Dena and 6th st.

106 dena drive April 24, 2012 at 9:58 PM

On Dena in N. Concord. Saw the flash and heard the boom. It was so bright it seemed like lightning. Thought it was a freak storm for a minute.

107 Ticklebritches April 24, 2012 at 9:59 PM

@Realquick, took the words right out of my mouth. Hmmmmm…….

108 duck April 24, 2012 at 10:00 PM

Eric CSI is in route to Gina’s neighborhood canon right now. LMAO !

109 anon April 24, 2012 at 10:02 PM

Has anyone ever contacted the news? You’d think if they started doing stories on these booms someone would get to the bottom of it.

110 Jody April 24, 2012 at 10:03 PM

It came outa the sky!

111 Girl w/ dog April 24, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Dog is still freaked out. Heard it by CVHS.

112 bluebird April 24, 2012 at 10:04 PM

Was on my way east on Highway 4, just past PCH and WP, when I saw some sort of bright light behind me. Didn’t hear any boom. Now this may just be a coincidence but right then a rock or something hit my windshield. I can’t see any chip but will be able to see better in the morning. For everybody’s sake, I hope they don’t set off another one, what ever “it” is!

113 PH Gal April 24, 2012 at 10:06 PM

I’m in Pleasant Hill (by North Main & Geary) had my windows open, was pretty loud. Over here it sounded like a big roll of thunder.

114 lisa April 24, 2012 at 10:12 PM

This happened a couple of months ago and they never did figure it out.

115 Kudleme April 24, 2012 at 10:13 PM

I heard it over here off of Treat & Bel Air. There was a car that went speeding down the street then the bang. At first I thought he’d hit something.

116 ChampagneKitty April 24, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Nick, I’m in the apartments at the bottom of Hillsborough Dr.

117 Anonymous April 24, 2012 at 10:17 PM

It’s JUST FIREWORKS. Get a grip people. It’s pretty funny how people freak out about it. I quite enjoyed the show across the street a few weeks ago. …. Point being… someone has been setting off illegal fireworks. Case closed. Goodnight.

118 N6th April 24, 2012 at 10:21 PM

@Roskelley, EXACTLY. Can you imagine how much revenue the city could make if they would just post an officer by the pool to catch speeders.

120 Cblock April 24, 2012 at 10:23 PM

I felt it through my feet in my carpeted room here in Hercules. The floor is wooden with a crawl space. I didn’t hear anything, but I felt a deep boom. Then I Googled loud boom contra costa co. and found this thread. I guess I’m the only one with back problems standing still while online in Hercules. My bf in the other room didn’t feel anything. He’s sitting down in an office chair. I doubt if it was a meteor since it seems like it diminished a lot between Pacheco and Hercules. There’s a Naval Weapons station around here? News to me.

121 Nick April 24, 2012 at 10:52 PM

ChampagneKitty, I’ve done some work in a few units there over the last few years. I wonder if we’ve ever met in person.

122 Nick April 24, 2012 at 10:54 PM

@Cblock, all the way in my old stomping grounds in Hercules? Wow! I wonder if my brother or parents felt it.

123 Just a Concordian April 24, 2012 at 10:55 PM

N. Concord here, won’t say where I am but I had a pretty good viewing angle.
I had just set up the projector and computer in the back yard to watch the Barcelona-Chelsea game when i saw the flash. 2 seconds later the boom. Dog ran inside in an instant. Nothing shook, that I could feel. A look to the sky and behind a tree a puff of white smoke in the sky moving east. It was on the East side of E.Olivera. Quick look in Google Maps reveals a potential source somewhere between Winthrop and Benton. Of course I’m no topography expert but from where I am it seems the most likely source.
I think this may have been fireworks or something the like.

124 Eric April 24, 2012 at 10:55 PM

@#118, if people are hearing it from Clayton, to Pleasant Hill, to Martinez, and even Hercules, it’s gotta be a little more than fireworks, don’t you think?

125 Poollady April 24, 2012 at 10:57 PM

Lordy 120 comments? They’re mortars. Hugely illegal fireworks. It isn’t the NWS just some idiot looking to blow his arms off or set someone’s house on fire. Kind of like 4th of July in N. Concord when it sounds like Beruit. People are stupid.

126 Smith Family April 24, 2012 at 10:58 PM

In East Sun Terrace, heard it sounded like it was comming south east of us…

127 Poollady April 24, 2012 at 10:58 PM

By “people” I mean the idiots with the fireworks :)

128 suzy q April 24, 2012 at 10:58 PM

There WAS a helicopter overhead just at or right after the boom here in North Concord. Was to scared to go further than to stick my head out the front door. Then bart went by on Port Chicago/Holbrook area which quicly drowned it out. Forgot to mention that before. I wonder what they all might have seen… Especially the copter.

129 Make My Day April 24, 2012 at 11:08 PM

This might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunfire_locator – I would guess that this system could triangulate these booms as well as it can triangulate gunfire.

Look at this, we can even buy it from a CA (Mountain View, Calif., USA) company: http://www.shotspotter.com/company/fast-facts

I like this: The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) independent test of ShotSpotter technology found the system to be both accurate and effective, reporting that the ShotSpotter Gunshot Location System accurately detected 80 percent of test fire incidents inside the test coverage area to within 40 feet, with a median error of 25 ft.

134 LOL @ idiots April 24, 2012 at 11:29 PM

Claycord is just full of professional assumptionists.

135 anon April 24, 2012 at 11:31 PM

This was not a mortar or any available “firework” if it’s being heard all over the place, people would have seen a mortar as well. I’ve played with lots of them and it is much louder than any of those. First thought was an acetylene balloon. If you’ve ever worked in a shop with a welding rig you probably know of them. If you make a big one they can be that loud, but they don’t really produce the flash that people are talking about and you wouldn’t feel it from very far away.

Anyone that thinks it’s gunfire is an idiot.

I’m also guessing that Googlar is a Redditor. :p

136 Steve Hart April 25, 2012 at 12:06 AM

Well,I did hear that Area 51 has moved….just sayin,LOL

137 I'm The Urban Spaceman April 25, 2012 at 12:10 AM

This, fellow Claycordians…THIS is a mystical event….confirmed by MicroFauxNewsCORP…it’s Corn Snake chemtrails mixing with Oxygen in the lower atmosphere and encountering Olive Garden emissions…the result is to create gastronomical sonic booms worthy of Thor, The God of Thunder.

138 Maximus Prime April 25, 2012 at 12:13 AM

It happened at Holbrook Park. I live across the street. It was a mortar. Yeah……..I almost crap myself.

139 Ray-Ray April 25, 2012 at 12:15 AM

I didn’t hear anything, when I was near Concord High, this evening. Dang, I missed all the fun this time.

140 Victor Mancini April 25, 2012 at 1:18 AM

Instead of 100 posts where everyone sounds off as to where they heard it, what they were doing while they heard it, what their dog/cat did when they heard it; why can’t anyone give us an accurate description of what it is?

141 Just some kids having fun April 25, 2012 at 6:20 AM

Loud boom heard in Tahoe may be related to meteor shower
Posted by admin in News on April 22nd, 2012

By Kathryn Reed

A loud boom that was heard and felt Sunday about 8am could be related to the Lyrid meteor showers.

While folks at the National Weather Service in Reno said they did not feel or hear anything, they did see something.

“I can tell you that I was speaking to a co-worker and she saw a flash across the sky,” meteorologist Mark Faucette told Lake Tahoe News. “If they are bright enough to see in the daytime, they are slightly bigger than the usual meteor.”

But Faucette stressed that he is no expert in these matters and that it is pure speculation on his part that what people heard-felt was related to the Lyrids – which were to peak this morning.

Jes sayin’…..things are getting spooky or there is a logical explanation?

Or….from beneath the surface as the plates shift before an impending earthquake?

145 black man April 25, 2012 at 7:55 AM

Isnt North Concord the worst area in Concord? Im bein told its worst than Monument area and Pittsburg. North Concord is the new Anntioch right mang?

146 Anonymous April 25, 2012 at 8:44 AM

@Eric No I do not think its MORE than just fireworks. Illegal fireworks – professional fireworks cause LOUD booms that can be heard for miles. And I have seen them twice. Once across the street and another time while driving. It wasn’t just a flash of light, it was professional type illegal fireworks.

147 t April 25, 2012 at 8:48 AM

I think the military up to something in the navel weapons station because everyone in north concord could hear and feel it.

148 Shiloh April 25, 2012 at 9:00 AM

My guess is that it’s happening in N Concord (where the flash is visible) and the sound is echoing off the mountain which is why people in Clayton are hearing it so well. I live in between and never hear it.

149 Crazy Eddy April 25, 2012 at 9:23 AM

It was a professional firework (or maybe a mortar), and it was right behind my house. I’m pretty sure it was launched from the Holbrook Assoc. pool. I heard the rocket send it up and knew a boom was coming. Yes it was loud and thunderous, shook the windows etc. I looked out the window and could see the little sparkly things descending and then they disappeared.

I’m not surprised people heard it all over the place. On 4th of July you can hear fireworks from many towns over. Not sure what could be done about it. Someone launches a big firework, then walks away. Cops show up 10 or 20 minutes later and there’s nothing for them to see. It’s pretty annoying though. I’ve lived in a lot of California towns and never been in one that has loud booms once a week like Concord.

152 annoy. in dana estates April 25, 2012 at 9:32 AM

I called the city clerk the night the police chief was speaking at the city council, and asked if we had a gun shot locator or could obtain one. I have asked this question before. We live close to the bunker area and I know our house make sounds from the windows and floors like something heavy moving on street or underground. No we do not have things go bump in the night. I felt the explosion again last night and I think there is something being experimented someplace around here.

Nick & CKitty…we’re all practically neighbors! Although I’m not brave enough to be as specific as you two…I’m on one of the Canadian streets near the top of the hill LOL

156 Sandy April 25, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Sounds like the culprit is a mortar type thing from Holbrook Pool. I live in that neighborhood and it was so loud I actually thought a car had hit my house!

157 Anon April 25, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Maybe if a Police was out patroling they might just see something. Ever notice the Police don’t seem to see or hear these?

158 Concord Resident April 25, 2012 at 10:11 AM

To be heard from N. Concord (Martinez even) to Clayton…it was not “professional” or personal fireworks. Maybe something big enough to come from Navel Weapons station…but nothing owned or obtained by the general public (I would hope not anyway). Something from the refinery? Wish this mystery could be solved. Been reading about it for a while but the first time I heard it for myself (near Bailey/Claycord/Clayton Rd’s)

159 Kat April 25, 2012 at 10:13 AM

I’m over by Concord High School and we heard it loud and clear!

160 Vs April 25, 2012 at 10:16 AM

I live right down the street from Concord High & have read about all these loud “explosions” on here before but have yet to hear or “feel” one until last night…it definitely got my attention!

161 anonmama April 25, 2012 at 10:21 AM

we should map it then we can pinpoint it to find out where it’s coming from. we are on mendocino and concord blvd and I heard it, my husband said it was the neighbors car backfiring,…..

Hi Bradford…Nick and Bradford, did you know that Sun Terrace has an organized neighborhood partnership?

Nick, was it in Sun Terrace Apartments that you have done work in?

164 Diablo April 25, 2012 at 10:58 AM

I didn’t hear or see anything but I’m guessing a meteor. Couple years ago I was driving on hwy 24 through Lafayette at night when all of a sudden the entire sky flashed bright green a couple times. M1000’s are loud but you can’t hear them across multiple cities like whats being reported.

165 Grant/Frederick April 25, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Heard loud boom, it shook the house and set off all the neighbors car alarms.

166 Anonymous April 25, 2012 at 11:14 AM

@Concord Resident You are an idiot, have you read the comments? The mystery has been solved. Yes, it IS just ‘professional fireworks’. Stop trying to make it more than what it is. People have SEEN THE FIREWORKS. The professional kind like the city sets off over water on the 4th of July! So yes, someone out there has access to them for whatever reason and are setting them off all over. Its been happening for some time and people have been SEEING THEM. Calm down, the world isn’t ending.

167 Crazy Eddy April 25, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Thanks Anonymous (167). You took the words right out of my keyboard.

170 Some Guy April 25, 2012 at 1:57 PM

I agree with “Just a Concordian”
I saw the flash, saw the puff of smoke, heard the car alarms and checked google maps. I would have to speculate perhaps sent from the dark end of willow pass park area.Near Pyro st. Yeah, it’s a real street..

Likely this?

http://lightyears.blogs.cnn.com/2012/04/25/nasa-meteor-over-california-and-nevada-was-size-of-minivan/?hpt=hp_t3

Just a 154,000 pound meteor disintegrating in the sky (thank god!), releasing the equivalent of a five-kiloton explosion in the process.

Also widely reported in Sacramento.

174 CONGO April 25, 2012 at 2:43 PM

TOTALLY HEARD IT SUPER LOUD HELLA SHOOK UP THE HOUSE

175 not a firework from holbrook April 25, 2012 at 3:53 PM

I was outside near the pool. it was a meteorite the sparkles were the meteorite burning up as it entered the atmosphere and the boom was a sonic boom.caused when an object goes faster than the speed of sound. Look it up

176 Nick April 25, 2012 at 3:55 PM

ChampagneKitty, I honestly don’t remember exactly which complex it was. The last time was a good two years ago. It was the ones right at the end of the street by the park though.

Bradford, oh grow a pair man! LOL :)

177 Some Guy April 25, 2012 at 5:18 PM

@Boom
Wrong time and day for that meteorite.

@not a firework from holbrook
Except that it left a small smoke cloud exactly like a 6″ commercial firework does. And it was only a few hundred feet in the air. And it was not a sonic boom.

178 In the dark April 25, 2012 at 10:55 PM

Yep, heard it. Was watching Dancing with the Stars with a friend and I said….”did you hear that boom?” She did too. I am in Bishop Estates off Concord Blvd, & Bailey/Glazier.

179 tommy lee April 25, 2012 at 11:24 PM

go go gadget acetylene balloon!

180 Charles-the-cat April 26, 2012 at 12:00 AM

The most recent boom was my head exploding when I read the Octomom in Walnut Creek story.

181 Durwood April 26, 2012 at 7:36 AM

Heard loud and clear in Sun Terrance. I went outside to make sure there was no fire as I originally thought it was a gas explosion in a house

My new theory is that it is coming from the Naval Weapons Station. That explosion was way, way too big for small arms or fireworks. That was military ordinance. It’s being done at night to hide the smoke/debris cloud, and it’s being spread out to keep people from triangulating it’s origin.

Either they are clearing out WW2 or other large ordinance that is unsafe to move by detonating them in place dispose of them, or they are collapsing underground bunkers or silos with explosives.

my 2 cents.

182 What Security April 26, 2012 at 9:07 AM
