UPDATE x2: The VERY LOUD Low-Flying Aircraft in North Concord Belongs to Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum

March 29, 2012 23:17 pm · 76 comments

Did anybody out there hear or see the very loud low-flying aircraft that flew over North Concord at about 10:45’ish on Thursday night?

Let us know if you saw/heard it, and tell us what it sounded/looked like.

UPDATE, 11:49pm: It looks like we have an answer. At 10:39pm, a Gulfstream Aerospace Gulfstream 3 (twin-jet) took off from Buchanan Field in Concord, and flew directly over North Concord on it’s way to Wisconsin.

Thanks to “aka” & Gene for the information!

UPDATE, 11:59pm: The plane actually belongs to Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum. He was at a fundraiser in Alamo tonight and has another event tomorrow in Wisconsin.

3 Airplane phobia March 29, 2012 at 11:21 PM

I live off of west st and i heard it and i keep hearing it again. It’s 11:20pm and I have a phobia of planes since 911. So I’m scared the hell outta my soul. Lol. Idk what it could be doing or why but I want it to go away.

4 Rebel March 29, 2012 at 11:21 PM

I saw and heard it. The plane was heading south by southeast. It had two very bright red identification lights on the front of it.

5 R March 29, 2012 at 11:24 PM

7 Santorum has left the Bay Area March 29, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Pretty sure that was Rick Santorum’s plane leaving…he arrived and left from Buchanan Airport for his fundraising dinner in Alamo tonight

8 ashlieann March 29, 2012 at 11:25 PM

9 Steve March 29, 2012 at 11:27 PM

11 Antler March 29, 2012 at 11:29 PM

Couldn’t hear it at our house; BUT when I was in the Trader Joe’s parking lot in mid-afternoon today, I did get to watch an outbound ambulance helicopter taking off. If anyone you know needed help today, I can promise you the paramedics were wasting no time getting to the scene……awesome!

12 Anon March 29, 2012 at 11:29 PM

North Concord near Port Chicago and Olivera- was REALLY loud. Seemed to circle around for a little bit. Didn’t see it though

13 Anon March 29, 2012 at 11:30 PM

Heard it in Pacheco.

14 anon March 29, 2012 at 11:30 PM

On Bailey Rd. and heard it but didn’t think anything of it.

15 B March 29, 2012 at 11:38 PM

Not sure where it came from but we heard it here off N. 6th and PCH. Went outside after I thought it was gone then it flew back over going towards the east…. and then it was gone..haven’t heard it since. Pretty loud.

18 Fassbinder March 29, 2012 at 11:47 PM

19 Santorum is the reason March 30, 2012 at 12:01 AM

Santorum has an event in Wisconsin tomorrow morning

20 Dansker March 30, 2012 at 12:04 AM

Didn’t hear it

21 Phoenyx March 30, 2012 at 12:06 AM

Heard it loud and clear off Clayton Way. Figured if it was anything of note it would end up here. I was right. :)

22 LoudPlane March 30, 2012 at 12:15 AM

I live right by the air field off of Grant St. on Gill Dr. I thought the thing was falling! I was trying to keep my 3 year old calm because it scared the crap outta her! Way to go Santorum!!! >:(

23 William Wallace March 30, 2012 at 12:15 AM

Planes make noise. Calm down.

24 Craig Cannon March 30, 2012 at 12:28 AM

Was watching the whole thing as they were loading on the West side of the airport. The plane was parked over by the big Seeno hangar area. Very little security. We drove right up to the open gate to the field. I knew better than pass through it. That thing even taxi’d loud. Yes, that was military style sound. But as stated,it was a larger business jet. We drove home to our house on a hill to the west of the airport as it was leaving. Incredible loudness. They were really full up going out. I guess “please fly quietly” does not apply to faltering Presidential Candidates. Wonder if the pilot had a few glasses of wine at dinner?

25 lemonlyle March 30, 2012 at 12:58 AM

Why would you live near the airfield if your kid’s afraid of planes?

26 Radar March 30, 2012 at 1:15 AM

Get any video of it Craig?

27 Fassbinder March 30, 2012 at 2:22 AM

He lost my vote

28 Encina Bicycles?thanks for flight tracker March 30, 2012 at 2:28 AM

It was really interesting to read the flight log for the month – thanks for posting it.

29 pacheco mom March 30, 2012 at 4:20 AM

I was on the phone with my sister and made a comment that was a huge plane taking off from the airport late at night.

30 Fred March 30, 2012 at 4:57 AM

This is the same idiot who said that Puerto Rico will have to accept English as their first language if they want to become a U.S. state! Well looks like he just lost a lot of votes from the Hispanic community.

31 KingSVTsis March 30, 2012 at 5:21 AM

We live off Solano Way, walking distance to the airport. We held our breaths for what seemed like an eternity wondering if there was going to be a crash. Thanks, Rick.

32 Anon March 30, 2012 at 5:42 AM

Sounds like they do not follow the noise abatement procedures that most pilots do. Oh I forgot, he is a candidate and rules do not apply and also OK to lie.

33 PH Resident March 30, 2012 at 5:44 AM

Yes, I heard it in Pleasant Hill. It was very loud. I was wondering why a jet was flying so low in the area.

34 Anon777 March 30, 2012 at 6:07 AM

Good riddance!

35 Schmee March 30, 2012 at 7:09 AM

Oh Alamo. Where the huge anti Obama signs are on the side on the hill off nb 680. I think I’m gonna get the sf police paintball team to come mark those signs up. It would be so easy

36 Fast Eddie March 30, 2012 at 7:46 AM

The G3 is an older plane, the type certificate was issued in 1980. If it is a low time aircraft, it may not have had the engines updated to a quieter models. According to Wikipedia the last G3 was produced in 1987.

I understand that Buchanan is going to have the two main runways overlaid this spring/summer, so folks, get used to some noise while one or both main runways are closed and the alternates are used.

When you live near an airport you have to expect some noise, live with it.

37 Went over my house March 30, 2012 at 8:11 AM

Thought it was incoming……… but no big deal. Pretty loud.

38 Soxtiger March 30, 2012 at 8:25 AM

we live in Gregory Gardens, right in the take off pattern of Buchanan Airport. Bastard jolted me out of my sleep! I thought that jet was coming crashing into the house last night.

39 Palermo March 30, 2012 at 8:29 AM

It woke me up and I couldn’t go back to sleep until 3 a.m., going to be a crabby day here for me

40 Newhallian March 30, 2012 at 8:36 AM

santorum lost my vote.. that dang plane woke up my baby!

41 Why did it sound like two take offs? March 30, 2012 at 8:37 AM

I was sure I heard two plans take off. If the first blast was just the taxi to the runway, that is an incredibly load plane.

42 J. March 30, 2012 at 8:39 AM

I knew that somehow the Santorum fund raiser in Alamo would lead to a CLAYCORD.com article. Nice segue.

43 Loud One March 30, 2012 at 9:01 AM

Heard it over my house in Pleasant Hill. I wondered what the heck?

44 Loud One March 30, 2012 at 9:03 AM

I, too, wondered if it was going to crash in my neighborhood.

45 Jason March 30, 2012 at 9:11 AM

Santorum is done. Just picking up party cash now.
Romney will be next prez.

Romney – for Change.

46 Nic March 30, 2012 at 9:13 AM

I knew I could come here and find an answer. Damn that Santorum! I WAS asleep.

47 I heard it March 30, 2012 at 9:22 AM

We were watching “Doomsday Preppers” when we heard it going over our house. Thought it was the end of the world for sure.

48 To Schmee March 30, 2012 at 9:23 AM

I like the sign in Alamo. Here’s your pink slip Obama!!

49 kj#2 March 30, 2012 at 9:39 AM

tell him thanks for scareing people in concord sleeping! I had ear plugs in and I really thought it was gonna crash!

50 brownaround March 30, 2012 at 10:20 AM

Yes, we heard it in Pleasant Hill. My husband thought it was heavy rolling thunder at first and commented how gnarly it was! I knew it was a plane, but it was rumbling for a long, long time!

51 Kirkwood March 30, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Older, noiser jets are supposed to be banned from Buchanan Field. Since the tower closes at 9:00 pm, perhaps the aircraft operator knew he could get away with it. Santorum likely had his pick of aircraft from his supporters, he could have made a better choice.

52 SomeGuy March 30, 2012 at 11:11 AM

North Concord near Port Chicago and Olivera- was REALLY loud

53 A Medrano March 30, 2012 at 11:21 AM

I say it’s a cover up. And if it was really him and his jet making that loud noise in the middle of the night, then he lost my vote.

54 Screwy Louie March 30, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Sorry, couldn’t get to my laser pointer in time.

55 kiyyap March 30, 2012 at 1:13 PM

If the average republican president can’t tell the difference from their ass and a hole in the ground, how do you expect them to find an airport without a really really really long approach.

Also, if Santorum is in an old rusty Gulfstream, he ain’t getting elected.

56 SanDee March 30, 2012 at 2:20 PM

It was loud enough to make me look outside. Near Bailey Rd.

57 bmom March 30, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Is this what shook my neighborhood in pacheco right across the street from the airport at around 430 pm yesterday?

58 Chester E. Kitty March 30, 2012 at 2:30 PM

I heard it (live by Concord High). I thought the plane was going to land in my backyard!

59 skippy March 30, 2012 at 2:48 PM

More of Santorum’s interference in our bedrooms. Oh, and all the Romney as our next President posts- keep ‘em coming, I needed a good laugh.

60 SANTORUM PRESIDENT?????/ March 30, 2012 at 2:56 PM

If anyone is interested….please youtube: Santorum on Satan. Should be the first video that pops up. WTF IS HE TALKING ABOUT???????

61 funny man March 30, 2012 at 3:30 PM

this sounded scary! thank god no one santorumed themselves!

62 anon March 30, 2012 at 4:10 PM

I like all the “he lost my vote” posts. His absolutely despicable views aren’t enough to deter your vote, but some noise is?

63 Craig Cannon March 30, 2012 at 4:38 PM

No video of it Radar. I did not expect him and his crew to dis us like that. I actually liked him over Romney. Probably not Santorums fault really, but my gosh. You would think these wannabe candidates would use Oakland or similar if they are late flying. Don’t think we will see this fine Gentleman again anyway.

64 Transpo March 30, 2012 at 6:31 PM

@kirkwood, tower closes at 10:00 pm, not 9.
@craig Cannon, it’s alittle hard to fly a G3 quietly.

65 Troy March 30, 2012 at 7:38 PM

I really hoped people in CA would be smarter then inviting him here. Lets roll the times back. Maybe we can stop allowing women to vote or maybe the blacks to the back of the bus again. This guy is a true nut bag!! I am not a huge Obama fan but if this is all the Republicans can come up with sorry it’s Obama for me.

66 RJ March 30, 2012 at 7:39 PM
67 Brian March 30, 2012 at 9:02 PM

I know who I’m not voting for. There is a noise ordinance at KCCR Buchanan Field that could be seen HERE:
Basically restricting aircraft with a dBa value of over 78 and 75 dBa after 10PM. I took a look at the FAA Advisory Circular 36-3 which states what aircraft have specific dBa values and as it turns out the Gulfstream III has a dBa of 82.8 witch means his aircraft shouldn’t have been able to even operate at this airport. Breaking the law doen’t look good for a Presidential candidate.

68 Goat Head March 31, 2012 at 12:01 AM

I hope he don’t drop any rocks from it like Huey.

69 I've noticed that planes fly at very low altitude March 31, 2012 at 11:58 AM

when taking off and landing. Helicopters have the same problem.

70 julie March 31, 2012 at 3:44 PM

I heard what appeared to be a sonic boom, rattled my windows around 2pm the same day, I thought maybe they were blasting something at the gun range or naval weapons station. Guess it was the plane coming in.

71 Don P. March 31, 2012 at 4:18 PM

lol at all the people who were seriously concerned there was going to be a crash.

72 Mary March 31, 2012 at 8:10 PM

I heard it also it was so loud and enough to rattle my home here in Pacheco, I thought it was going to crash. I immediately went outside to look and it looked like a jet but I found it so odd why was it fly so low.

73 Concordian April 1, 2012 at 1:46 PM

I heard it and I was waiting for a boom. I thought it was about to crash.

74 angie April 1, 2012 at 7:09 PM

75 macawlady April 2, 2012 at 9:30 AM

We heard it. We live right across the street from the airport so it was incredibly loud.

As my friend used to say…”Rude suckers”. Ugh.

76 Sean April 12, 2012 at 12:32 AM

Did anyone see the 13 or so airplanes that flew over walnut creek at about midnight today on 4-11-2012, they were all flying low.
