The driver of a PT Cruiser slammed his vehicle into the front windows of Orchard Supply Hardware today after attempting to park in a disabled spot, according to the Concord Police Department.

The crash occurred at about 10am. The driver suffered only very minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported.

Thanks to Jim (bottom photo) and Ken (top photo) for sending the pictures to news@claycord.com!

1 I always thought PT Cruisers were strange cars February 28, 2012 at 10:29 AM

…something about them doesn’t seem right.

2 subterfuge February 28, 2012 at 10:34 AM

Trying to park in a handicap spot… once upon a time while at work in a public sector job I was informed that habdicap people can park where ever they please.

3 Swordbreaker February 28, 2012 at 10:35 AM

peple who cant figure out how to park a car shouldnt be driving in the 1st place…..not only are they a danger to property and themselfs but all other drivers as well

4 Chandler February 28, 2012 at 10:51 AM

Why do we let old people drive?

5 jtkatec February 28, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Themselfs, any relation to Christmas elfs?

6 Chuckie February 28, 2012 at 11:01 AM

Perhaps it is time for the disabled driver to give up his/her driver’s license. Does anyone in Claycord want to be on the same road as this person?

Time to start taking the cab!

7 Anon777 February 28, 2012 at 11:03 AM

Ouch, that’s gonna hurt the wallet!

8 jtkatec February 28, 2012 at 11:09 AM

For the same reason, we let you drive, Chandler.

And where does it say the driver was “old”. Obviously, you are very, very young

9 Goat Head February 28, 2012 at 11:10 AM

It looks like it was able to go over the sidewalk because it was at the wheelchair ramp which is potentially dangerous for every one inside because its at the main entrance and exit route.

10 Imnotold February 28, 2012 at 11:12 AM

How do you know the driver was old? You do not have to be old to be disabled.

11 Bishop Estates February 28, 2012 at 11:13 AM

@ #4 not all elderly drivers have issues. But when they hit a certain age the DMV makes them come in on a yearly basis to renew and have eyesight checked. At least thats what they did with my Mother in Law, she was told she could no longer drive after dusk.

12 Lorelei February 28, 2012 at 11:20 AM

We let old people drive, so that politicians can protect their cushy jobs….Let me explain: Public Agencies, like the DMV, are under-funded, when they should be road-testing every driver over 70 EVERY YEAR, but they don’t have the staff because the fat cats in the state legislature NEED all that money and those perquisites that come with their over-inflated jobs, never mind what’s good for their constituencies! When it comes to cutting the state budget, the cutting should start AT THE TOP, where the real expense for dead-weight is, and not be strapping the workers at the bottom with furlough days and cuts to schools and senior programs. Of course, that’s not going to happen until some old driver runs over someone related to a state lawmaker. Then, said lawmaker might dock his boat and go to Sacramento and put in a couple of hours at his office writing some bill or other that will be shot down in session. PLEASE! Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining…..But it’s never going to happen, because those creeps protect one another and their fat-cat “jobs.”

13 Maybe the accelerator got stuck February 28, 2012 at 11:24 AM

We shouldn’t assume it was operator error…maybe there was a malfunction like the accelerator getting stuck.

14 anon February 28, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Time to do away with handicap parking spaces. People who shouldn’t be driving anyway.

15 anon February 28, 2012 at 11:26 AM

I had my foot on the brake and the car just kept going. It’s a manufacture’s defect.

This happened to three of us 6 years ago as we were walking into Dollar Tree.
The lady hit 3 of us and my son spent a week at Children’s Hospital in Oakland. They were fantastic and were able to save his foot. To this day I have a hard time going to Dollar Tree. The lady was 90 at the time.

17 LIC Plate February 28, 2012 at 11:40 AM

Hi Mayor,

You should blur, or crop-out, the license plate.

18 uh1vce160 February 28, 2012 at 11:44 AM

Anon 11:25am
Are you going to come and pick me up whenever I need to go someplace since we shouldn’t be driving according to you? That would save me a lot of money.

19 foonman February 28, 2012 at 11:48 AM

@chandler……Lets look at insurance data…..Humm!…well young people shouldnt be given a drivers license until they are thirty five. Then take it away when they are fifty five…..good thinking……I had to razz you on this one. I have a friend (94 years old) still drives the freeways, and had a ticket in 1948 for speeding (just came back from WW2 service). Not a reckless driver. Very sharp and clear headed and great to talk to. Walking history.

21 suzanne February 28, 2012 at 12:13 PM

i don’t see anything broken…how did he slam through the window?’

22 anonamiss February 28, 2012 at 12:16 PM

It’s one thing to be tested by the DMV every year on your eyesight, quite another to be tested on reflexes and agility. Just because you can pass the written and the eye test, doesn’t automatically make you a good driver……..

23 @ Disabled my rear! February 28, 2012 at 12:18 PM

Your list forgot to include @$$holes. YOU!!!!

24 jtkatec February 28, 2012 at 12:30 PM

I thought it was funny.

I’m still counting how many categories I qualify for.

17 is interesting.

25 Anon February 28, 2012 at 1:06 PM

@21, the window in the center is not just real clean, it is gone!

And on blurring the license plate, why? It is not showing inside someones house and this way if we see the car on the street or while walking on the sidewalk we can get the hell out of the way!

26 Cowellian February 28, 2012 at 1:18 PM

I did not give you permission to post a picture of my car!

27 Subterfuge February 28, 2012 at 1:24 PM

@suzanne;

Maybe it was magic!

28 Screwy Louie February 28, 2012 at 1:24 PM

What?
No drive-thru jokes
C-mon people, lets go !!

29 CCGranny February 28, 2012 at 1:55 PM

PT Cruisers are not safe and a danger to the community. We need to pass strict laws immediately to remove these potential killers from our cities. Nobody will be safe until PT Cruisers are controlled.

30 SK February 28, 2012 at 2:16 PM

Ha ha… Cowellian, you beat me to it! But you forgot to follow up with a demand that the Mayor take the picture down. LOL

31 Make My Day February 28, 2012 at 2:26 PM

Hey, I suspect that the lack of an Olive Garden at this location is a significant contributor to the accident.

32 Jessica February 28, 2012 at 2:26 PM

I was in there a couple of hours ago and the check-out clerk said the driver had a cast on his foot and was tring to break but apparently the cast pushed the accelerator too. The whole window was still broken/open and glass was still all over the carts. Apparently the car barely had a scratch. (Her words, I didn’t see it.)

…and mandatory training with rigorous background checks. The more rigorous the better. … and fees! Lots and lots of fees, especially the unconstitutional kind with no explanation of their usage. My wife could do the training… she has no trouble at all controlling her PT Cruiser, even though it’s a “menacing color”. My guess is that the wife’s PT is wisely respectful, as it’s aware of her drivers proficiency with other tightly controlled items.

She was also wondering if OSH started offering “Hot Apple Pies”?

34 @uh1vce160 February 28, 2012 at 3:11 PM

Take the bus.

35 Fred February 28, 2012 at 3:41 PM

And that is why you don’t drive with a cast on your foot …

36 Smith February 28, 2012 at 3:57 PM

I guess the handicap spot wasn’t close enough…

37 Patrick February 28, 2012 at 4:05 PM

We need to outlaw casts. Too dangerous. They could be deadly weapons in the wrong hands (or feet). Please protect us, government.

38 PT Suzer February 28, 2012 at 6:10 PM

Ha…….plate should say PT LOSER hahahahah

39 Antler February 29, 2012 at 9:48 AM

I was in the store at about 2:30p. They had the end of the paint department’s “Tape” aisle blocked off in the space toward the checkout counter, and workmen were busy working on “something” on the outer wall. I didn’t see broken glass and had no clue there had been an accident. Hopefully, the driver (who surely knew not to drive with a cast on…..idiot) was not seriously injured, and I am glad no customers were standing right there.
