Concord blvd between BART & YVR. Speed limit is too high for a residential area and speeding is a major problem. It has been awhile since someone died on that road. Lower the speed limit to 25, put in median to prevent passing and speed bumps like on Landana. Folks living on the road should be outraged. The CPD should do a better job of patrolling as well.

2 Marsh Creek January 4, 2012 at 12:07 PM

Marsh Creek Rd.

3 nikka January 4, 2012 at 12:13 PM

willow pass rd…. people be thinking its a highway! very cautious when I drive around there..

4 Cowellian January 4, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Kirker Pass, especially in the fog.

5 abbasabba January 4, 2012 at 12:23 PM

The road through Trader’s Joe parking lot in Concord

Clayton Road. You never know when idiots decide to run across the road. Between the kids with their pants hanging down, the beligerent drunks, increased population of homeless panhandlers, and wandering senior citizens, it just doesnt make a very safe road to drive down. Add rush hour traffic and you have the makings of a disaster.

Seriousy, I drive down Clayton Rd everyday between 530 and 630pm and I am on constant alert. Dont know how many times reckless and clueless pedestrians block traffic or run across the roads in the dark. It’s well and good if I’m the guy watching out for them and slow down. It’s another when the idiot drivers behind me dont notice why I’m slowing down and decide to speed up around me and nearly into the dumb lady pushing her baby in the carriage.

Oddly enough, Clayton Rd is where I find more pedestrian numbnuts than poor drivers, although there’s no shortage of them either. Pay attention folks and save a life.

8 Myrtle January 4, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Myrtle Dr. due to the number of people who speed to and from Bailey and only one stop sign at Ayers. It’s not a freeway, people! Perhaps speed bumps would be appropriate.

9 Anonymous January 4, 2012 at 12:41 PM

I agree with Cowellian. Kirker Pass is downright scary in the fog or heavy rain.

10 Clasping Forehead January 4, 2012 at 12:41 PM

Qt3.14 @#1, Concord Boulevard does not go between BART and Ygnacio Valley Road. And Concord Boulevard is not a residential street. It’s a major commute route and always has been.

#7, you are so right!

I nominate BAILEY ROAD.

11 YV_Road_Hater January 4, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Why there isn’t a “no turn on red” sign at the signal light as you’re about to turn right from San Carlos Ave. onto Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek (near Heather Farm Park) will forever be a mystery to me. Drivers cannot see oncoming traffic on YV in the right lane if their lives depended on it – and it will when they start to inch onto YV Road and quickly realize there’s a car approaching at 45 mph. Just pray your overdrive is in good working order!

Hey mayor, maybe this could be the first question posed for your new automotive columnist! :)

12 Nick January 4, 2012 at 12:53 PM

I think #1 meant between Bart and Kirker Pass. That is right near where YVR becomes Kirker.

Bailey Rd

Abbasabba, I was right behind an accident when a young man died, I saw later they called him “eddie spaghetti.” I saw that horrible wreck and his friends – the aftermath. Something I will never forget. I was about to exit my car to see if there was something I could do and then a CPD just happened to be just a few cars behind me as a coincidence so he was on scene right away. There were those fatalities seemingly very close together, and I’ve seen other accidents there. I always wondered why nothing was ever done, but frankly I’m not entirely sure of the cause… the curve? I do believe speed played a part in the one I saw. It was a clear bright day… I didn’t see it happen, but pulled up as the dust was clearing… heartbreaking.

15 Bob January 4, 2012 at 1:00 PM

The winding stretch just before you approach the Benicia Bridge heading towards Concord. It has to be the worst approach to any major bridge in the State

16 Proceed with caution January 4, 2012 at 1:01 PM

I vote on Belair Drive. It is one of the shortest streets and one of the busiest. People don’t want to sit at the light at Clayton Road and Treat Blvd so they take Belair. They think they are on the freeway. Slow down the life you save might be your own!

17 Anon777 January 4, 2012 at 1:04 PM

Any street with speed bumps that people make a complete stop at. Jackasses, all of them, for installing them and stopping at them!

And I have to say that the most dangerous drivers are the ones going 25mph and blocking the flow of traffic. If you can’t do 34 or 40, get off the road!!

18 Blue hairs beware January 4, 2012 at 1:13 PM

Any road in and around Rossmoor! There comes a point in everyone’s lives, where some folks just shouldn’t be driving…even if they pass the vision test.

19 Matty January 4, 2012 at 1:16 PM

Without question – Hwy 4 – I-680 interchange.

20 RedAsphalt January 4, 2012 at 1:18 PM

Marsh Creek Road. Windy road with too many speeders and tailgaters causing accidents–many of which have been fatal.

21 So many roads and streets are dangerous January 4, 2012 at 1:20 PM

in Claycord, it is hard to decide on just one. Monument can be horrid at several intersections, like at 680 and Buskirk, then again at Meadow Lane and again at Detroit. But them Willow Pass and Market is nasty as well. So many more….

But the question is what makes them so dangerous? The answer is simple, either people are not paying attention to their driving, or else they have decided that they and their errands are more important than anyone else’s.

Stay off the damn cell phone, pay attention to what you are doing and be considerate of others. And that is such hard advise for so many people to follow…..

22 j January 4, 2012 at 1:25 PM

mf i agree w/ curb out in way off treat before limeridge

23 just me January 4, 2012 at 1:28 PM

I agree with the call for Marsh Creek, people drive that road like it’s Clayton Rd speeding, passing cars over a double yellow line etc. If you have a problem there area very few places you can pull off safely.

24 AoD January 4, 2012 at 1:33 PM

Monument is pretty bad day, and night. A LOT of drunk drivers.

25 @Clasping Forehead January 4, 2012 at 1:36 PM

At first, I thought you were correct…but alas, the guy knows pretty much what he’s talking about…except Concord Blvd. runs from a block from BART to Kirker Pass. And there are residences all along on the street. And people do drive way over the speed limit.

He could have said it slightly more precisely: “From NEAR Concord BART to KIRKER PASS.”

26 marinemom January 4, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Clayton Rd

27 KJ January 4, 2012 at 2:01 PM

As a pedestrian, I think they are all dangerous. Even with the pedestrian light flashing and chirping, you can’t count on drivers making turns to notice you. I often feel like a toreador dodging a charging bull.

28 foodcoma January 4, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Bailey for the lack of lighting, bumpiness, potholes and narrow road. Monument for the idiotic drivers.

29 Horse'n Around January 4, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Concord Blvd. Tired of hearing people speeding and racing each other up and down that road.

30 anonmtz January 4, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Matty #19 got it absolutely right…..

“Hwy 4 – I-680 interchange.”

……….coming or going from any direction this series of ‘ons” and ‘offs” can get you hurt quick.

31 Jim January 4, 2012 at 2:44 PM

Laguna….use to be where all the young folks lived now it lookss like the the slums of the latin America…not a safe street at any time night or day

32 Qt3.14 January 4, 2012 at 2:55 PM

@Clasping Forhead#10: Pardon me, I intended to write between driving under the BART tracks and YVR. And, there are homes on that road that people live in.
Suck it, D-Bag:)

33 Shuley January 4, 2012 at 3:17 PM

I think it depends on if you are thinking getting carjack, or getting in an accident. I agree that Detroit/Laguna area is the worst in terms of crime.

Funny – Look at Laguna on Google street view and you see the ice cream cart guy and the guy peddling the cartload of strawberries working in tandem. Classy!

The most dangerous, to me in terms of driving, goes to Treat. I saw a pile up there yesterday morning as a matter of fact.

34 Clayton Road January 4, 2012 at 3:19 PM

Really? 3 lanes and sidewalks right next to them. This is a freeway that needs to be reversed to two lanes on each side.

35 Left turn from Morgan Territory Rd... January 4, 2012 at 3:30 PM

…onto Marsh Creek Rd. Almost impossible in morning, worse at night.

36 Jorge January 4, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Monument.

37 Anon January 4, 2012 at 3:32 PM

@Qt3.14 #32
You’re still wrong. It runs between the BART tracks and Kirker Pass Road. D-Bag.

38 babycita January 4, 2012 at 3:50 PM

#1: Bailey Rd. I live on it and have seen crazy speeders for over 8 years now.

#2 Marsh Creek Rd, for the sheer number of fatalities.

If only all those home developers out in Antioch/Brentwood were forced to fund highway expension at the same time they were allowed to build tens of thousands of homes, then not as many people would be using Marsh Creek (or Bailey Rd) to escape Hwy 4.

39 freddy January 4, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Monument blvd. crawling with illegals with no insurance.

40 I'm The Urban Spaceman January 4, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Any road my ex-wife is careening down at that moment is the most dangerous road in Claycord…hand(sometimes two hands will touch the steering wheel at the same time!) firmly at 6:00 on the wheel, for superior steering, paying attention to anything but the road, tailgaiting, and a slow braking response time.
Mr. Toad never had as wild a ride as any trip with her behind the wheel.

41 SAR January 4, 2012 at 4:26 PM

Yea for Qt3.14 #32… most knew what you meant.

42 Lorelei January 4, 2012 at 4:44 PM

I absolutely agree with #18 blue hairs beware….EVERYONE 75 and over should be ROAD TESTED and VISION TESTED EVERY YEAR before they are allowed to drive! Senses and reaction time are impaired with age and they are hazards to everyone else who is driving AND/OR walking the sidewalks! I would be happy to submit to that kind of scrutiny when I reach that age…don’t want to kill myself or anyone else!

43 anon January 4, 2012 at 4:45 PM

Any street near a high school when the kids get out and are driving daddys car!!

44 Nick January 4, 2012 at 5:09 PM

As bad as some of the roads are here, it could be worse. The Silverado Trail out in wine country is a two lane 55mph road and the shoulders are marked as bike lanes. There is never any shortage of cyclists out there either. Makes me nervous as hell every time I’m driving out there.

45 Local January 4, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Hwy 4 / 680 Interchange.

46 Morning Walker January 4, 2012 at 5:40 PM

Any road that I am driving on is dangerous.

47 olskool58 January 4, 2012 at 6:03 PM

MARSH CREEK RD-

at least once a week my schedule puts me driving against traffic, at dusk and occasionally driving a Dually pick-up with a trailer in tow- last Thursday I had 2 close calls with “traffic” coming around a corner in my lane-

48 Anon Redux January 4, 2012 at 6:45 PM

The left turn from Danville Blvd to Rudgear Road in Walnut Creek. Very confusing,

49 Gerwah January 4, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Every road mentioned in the first 48 posts is a good choice. Add in a bicyclist to make it more interesting. My personal least favorite road is Clayton Road due to bad drivers, speeding, bicyclists, senior citizens and homeless plus the occasional idiot who thinks are the Concord version of bushman and feels the need to cross somewhere between Cape Cod and Treat, jumping out from median.

50 Antler January 4, 2012 at 8:03 PM

#32 and others ~ ~ ~ Whether you are talking about Clayton Road all the way out to the Ygnacio Valley Road/Kirker Pass Road major intersection, or whether you are talking about Concord Blvd, which goes into Kirker Pass (only), BOTH those long streets used to be 45 mph when we moved to Concord in 1960. We could get downtown and to the freeway in a hurry! Most of the homes and apartments were added LATER, and it’s too bad the planning commission did not have enough sense to limit future driveways opening onto those streets. It’s sort of like they shouldn’t have let so many homes and other structures be built near Buchanan Field either.

But I agree that drivers exceed the speed limit on both those long streets, especially when they become more and more irritated by the long signal lights. We can hear drag racing on Concord Blvd. almost every night, too.

51 chef January 4, 2012 at 8:10 PM

A cop told me the treat limeridge stretch has one of the highest fatality rates out of all the roads in Contra Costa county

52 Qt3.14 January 4, 2012 at 8:56 PM

@anon # 37-enjoy the ride out to “Picksburg”, Antioch, or wherever you live. Oh, and you forgot… SUCK IT!

53 nan January 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

It’s not the roads that are dangerous, it’s the drivers.
None of the roads in claycord are so bad that a little good judgement and driving skills can’t compensate. You want dangerous, try devil’s slide. Claycord roads are a piece of cake in comparison.
Drive safe all.

54 Scott January 5, 2012 at 1:35 AM

Highway 4/680 for sure! Saw a car flipped over there yesterday!

55 Henry January 5, 2012 at 2:58 AM

Detroit Ave., but for different reasons than the other streets that have been listed.

57 GJEL Blogger January 5, 2012 at 11:10 AM

Have to disagree with Nan (#53). Drivers are of course the ones controlling the vehicles and making bad decisions, but you can’t legislate stupidity. At some point, the people who plan the city streets, speed limits and lights need to be held responsible for designing systems that work or don’t. Big multi-lane roads that feel like freeways encourage people to speed.

58 Jo January 5, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Myrtle Drive – Speed Bumps, please!!!

59 LostBoysMom January 5, 2012 at 1:16 PM

Not necessarily the most dangerous but I commute on Concord Ave andthere are always people driving too slow and swerving into other lanes. The lanes seem very narrow, add in distracted drivers (mostly cellphones) and I am just waiting for someone to swerve into my car. A big rig actually scraped my side view mirror one day!
Another bad road is Babel Lane. I just moved from there and am so glad. The speed limit is 35. It is a narrow all residential street that people drive 45-50. There is an elementary school one block off and the worst drivers are parents dropping off and picking up their kids. As someone said before, Many streets are unsafe now because of distracted, selfish drivers.

60 Mom of the Horde January 5, 2012 at 3:59 PM

Oak Road in Walnut Creek between Las Juntas Way and Oak Park Blvd/Coggins Drive. When there are leaves on the trees in the median between Las Juntas way and the 680 on/offramp, you can’t see the Northbound traffic signals clearly… the only one you can see is for the turn lane, until it’s almost too late to stop.
