“Safety Search” in Martinez puts Alhambra High School on lockdown

October 20, 2011 12:30 pm · 8 comments

The Martinez Police are conducting what the Martinez Unified School District is only describing as a “safety search” on the campus of Alhambra High School.

The school is on lockdown, and has been since about 11am, according to the district.

Nothing has been found, and no more information is currently available.

This search comes just a few days after a threat was directed towards Alhambra High School. The person responsible for the threat has not been located.

There’s no word yet on if today’s lockdown has anything to do with the prior threat.

Their website is updated, lockdown is over:

OCTOBER 20, 2011
Safety Search and Lockdown at Alhambra High School

This morning a teacher found an empty handgun case in front of the Performing Arts Building at AHS. The school immediately called the Martinez Police Department.

The police department arrived with 11 officers and the school initiated lockdown procedures. At that time teams of police officers and school administrators conducted room by room searches of packages and other belongs.

The students were instructed not to contact friends and parents during the lockdown while officials were still conducting the search so as not to compromise the safety of the investigation. Parents were informed by the automated calling system and via the district website throughout the lockdown. As always, the number one priority was the safety of the students.

The search was concluded at approximately 12:30, no weapons of any kind were found and school resumed normal operation.

Yes everything is back to normal at the school. Great job by the MPD for keeping our children safe. The district and the school did an awesome job keeping us parents informed of the situation. We were getting emails and phone calls thru-out the ordeal. I want to say THANKS!!!!

What happens to students outside a classroom (in bathroom for example) when schools go into lockdown?

Thank you to Martinez P.D. for keeping our children safe. Martinez School District notified me three different ways: Cell phone, work phone and home phone throughout the ordeal. Although I am distrubed by what is going on with the events this past week, I do feel our kids are in good hands with the staff and MPD.

Well said Freshman mom. I am thankful to the Mtz PD and the School District. I have 2 kids at the school and they both told me that the police were very nice to them when they searched the back packs. Not sure why there is so many parents complaining about this situation instead of giving thanks.

I am a student at Alhambra and I personally don’t think the situation was handled well the school waited a hour and half to lock down the school after they found the box. Anything could have happened during that time students were even let out for long passing were every one was out in the open which seems very dangors to me. I think the school should have locked down right when they found the box. I was also mad about the fact they left students and parents completely clueless about what was going on I think we had the right to know that. As to the question someone asked about if you were not in a classroom you had to find the closest class room and go in there.
