UPDATE x2: WCPD says major injury collision involved two drunk motorcyclists

June 12, 2011 · 17 comments

There is a major injury traffic collision at Ygnacio Valley Road & Oak Grove in the City of Walnut Creek.

WCPD is shutting down eastbound Ygnacio Valley Road (going towards Concord) due to the crash, so if you’re in the area, use an alternate route.

We will update you with more information when it’s available.

UPDATE, 5:45pm: One lane is now open on eastbound Ygnacio Valley Road going towards Concord.

The collision involved at least two motorcycles.

UPDATE: Sgt. Steve Gorski tells us the crash involved two drunk motorcyclists.

A group of three motorcyclists were going east on Ygnacio Valley Road about ½ mile east of Oak Grove Road when they crashed. Witnesses reported they were riding recklessly prior to the collision. A female rider (48 years old from Walnut Creek ) and a male rider (47 from Walnut Creek ) were taken to John Muir Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Another male rider with a female passenger crashed but they were not seriously injured and refused medical treatment. The male and female taken to the hospital were arrested for DUI and released from custody for medical treatment.

This is the third DUI collision in three days. Yesterday a man was arrested for DUI after hitting another car at Ygnacio Valley Road and Hillside Ave. (minor injuries) and another man was arrested for DUI Friday after striking a pole at the intersection of Bancroft and Treat (no injuries).

Thanks to Sgt. Gorski for the information on the incident.

Motorcycles are down and people are laying in the road

Ygnacio Valley Road now open in one lane. I’ve never seen so many WC police cars at one place. I hope the injuries are not life-threatening.

Knowing how the M/C riders ride (mostly illegally) in this county– no real suprise here..speeding, unsafe lane changes, no signal when changing lanes, following too close, unsafe/illegal lane splitting… no real suprise here..live hard, play fast, go to the trauma center..deal with it

Any update on the riders Mayor?

Anon 6/12 ~ Your comments are totally unnecessary. Not all riders ride illegally or unsafely.

I was driving up the hill, and in my rearview mirror, I saw what looked like a cloud of smoke or dust about the distance of a block behind me, then I immediately saw a motorcycle flip up in the air and crash. Between me and the accident was another motorcyclist who immediately whipped a u-turn and went back west bound in the eastbound lane. And no traffic was coming through eastbound after that.

The Contra Costa Times says that 2 motorcyclists were arrested on suspicion of DUI, and 2 were admitted to hospital with severe but non life-threatening injuries. Another declinced medical assistance.

And I believe the Clayton Road fire trucks responded on this one as well. (At least we did hear sirens a whole lot more than usual today.)

So much for DUI checkpoints. The PD doesn’t catch them by sitting still waiting for drunk drivers to come to them. The PD catches drunk drivers by driving around and using their training to identify drunk drivers and remove them from city streets.

They were old enough to know better, and now paying the price for their idiocy. Sad to hear they were from my hometown.

I saw these exact drunkards minutes before the crash at Treat and Bancroft. They were reffing their engines really loud, inching their way up to the light that was red….I turned into Safeway, they u-turned on Bancroft heading to Y.V. road….Wow.

Hope they are all ok and will recover fully. Not good to be riding/driving or anything while under the influence. Be careful out there everyone.

Sad but also reckless. We certainly are well aware of the consequences of drinking and driving. Motorcycles take a little more coordination to maneuver and you have to carry all the weight of the bike when you come to a stop. These fools are lucky that they are alive.
Stop revving up the bikes as a sign of how macho/cool you are, Stop going at excessive speeds while weaving in and out, stop doing wheelies on the freeway and please don’t drink and drive!!!

Drunk bikers wrecked, got hurt and get arrested. Good. Got no use for bikers and few less of them ain’t no skin off my back. No pun intended.

attn: Atticus. just so we all know exactlly where the dung pile lies. If you got no use for someone, they may as well not exist. No Skin of your back. Good people do dumb things all the time. Theres nothing GOOD about it. Bikers these days are mothers , lawyers, mechanics, doctors, and every other occupation there is. We aint hate’n on you for riding with training wheels on your huffy till you was 18. NO PUN INTENDED.

I ain’t talking about people who ride motorcycles numb nuts, I’m talking about bikers. So don’t get your leather chaps all wedged up.

Atticus seems to be back to his sweet-talkin’ ways. I hope that means he’s feeling a lot better.

17 Old Enough to Know Better June 15, 2011 at 7:42 AM

How old were these people? Good grief! How about taking a walk until you sober up for Pete’s sake? I’m glad they didn’t kill themselves (or anybody else) and hope that they learn a lesson from this. They are certainly old enough to know better. Not setting a good example in any event, particularly if they have children.
