DVC has cancelled all evening classes tonight, due to a power outage.

Classes will resume tomorrow, unless we tell you otherwise.

In the USA, consonents are not doubled unless the emphasis is on them; i.e. Cancel, Canceled; Travel, Traveled.

Bummer about the outage, but nice to get a last minute night off from school.

Last time I attended DVC, I got a night off from my Elizabethan English class due to a little ol’ earthquake. You might remember it …

Be safe out there.

This is all because we don’t recycle.

that’s a shame. I was looking forward to tonight’s class.

George– AND in the USA we usually spell it CONSONANT.

Hey George,

Canceled and cancelled are both listed in the dictionary. Do we really care if we use USA spelling? We all understand what it means.

George at #1 ~ ~ ~ You are right! There is a very obscure spelling rule which goes something like “If a word has two syllables, but the word is accented on the FIRST syllable, then a final consonant is not doubled before adding the suffix.” I was not aware that the spelling rule is different in England.

Mr. Mayor, please just don’t pay too much attention to us. We’re over here being self-righteous and snobby in the corner. Thanks for letting us know. I emailed my granddaughter just in case she had a class there tonight.

I was sitting in class, all the lights went out for a moment, then came back on. Shortly after cops came in and interrupted the lecture telling us we had to leave. On my way out I saw a fairly large fire on the roof of the liberal arts building and there were several firefighters on the scene. So, there is a bit more to this “power outage” story that has been sent out.

#1 pot (cough) kettle *cough* black ….

Obligatory joke:
In Soviet Russia, consonants double YOU!
(hehe, couldn’t resist)

Ooow! Fire!? Details! Hmm, nope, no liberal arts classes either!
One of those liberal arts majors, while smoking behind the building, forgot to make sure his doobie was out!! :D

its funny they waste all that money for solar panels and can not even supply power to the school ?? Where is al gore when you need him

13 Princesstard September 29, 2010 at 7:53 PM

I was in art class and the power had went out and the air conditioner went off so it was hot as hell in class. Then I checked my phone and saw that classes were canceled, thanks to DVC on Facebook and told our instructor and he didn’t want to let us leave until someone came in and told us we had to leave the campus immediately!

Little did we know that there was a fire.
Why do they make us do fire drills, if when there is a real fire, we hear no alarm. Ughhhh!

14 what the heck September 29, 2010 at 8:18 PM

thanks Dizzle for the info. Much appreciated.

15 George September 29, 2010 at 8:53 PM

CONSONANT! (I’m abashed.)

16 @concerned September 29, 2010 at 9:48 PM

We had some power for very few lights in the classroom somehow.
Someone said from solar powered generators.

To the person or persons who set the fire on top of the LA bldg: can you do it again tomorrow night? I have a quiz and I am not ready for it. Thanks!

18 Mr. Mayor September 29, 2010 at 11:25 PM

It wasn’t a fire, the air conditioning unit was just smoking, but it wasn’t on fire.

19 Anon E. Mouse September 30, 2010 at 1:30 AM

Damn smokers! :D
Have a good night, claycordians!

I’m much more annoyed at Contra Costa Centre. I could care less about doubling up on consonants. Note that I might get violent if people start using gratuitous “u”s in words like color/colour. (Charming in England, pretentious here.)

Starbucks at Virgina Hills Shopping Center said they got a huge bump in customers (students) buying coffee and doing homework at their place. Nice boost to their sales for the night. Maybe the power at DVC could go out more often.
