Clayton, the third safest city in California

September 14, 2010 11:00 am · 65 comments

According to the FBI, the City of Clayton is the third safest city in California.

The numbers are from the year 2009, and came to us from the Clayton City Manager’s Office & the Police Department, who received them from the FBI.

Good job, Clayton, good job!

I would expect Laborinda to surpass Clayton.

2 DavidMolstad September 14, 2010 at 11:06 am

Good Job to the Concord Police Department and the Clayton Police that patrols and handles what little crime there is out there.

Where does Concord stand in there ratings?

3 what the heck September 14, 2010 at 11:07 am

that’s because the dirt bags of Clayton go to Concord to do their dirty deeds!

4 Angry Mom September 14, 2010 at 11:12 am

I’m shocked, Mayor! Last week my husband and I returned home from summering on the east coast and it seems as though there’s been nothing but bad news… but this is fantastic news! When you consider all the spillover violence from Concord, I would have thought we’d have a much higher crime rate. I guess Piedmont has the same problems bordering Oakland.

5 Robert September 14, 2010 at 11:12 am

This must have been published before the CVHS football players began their robbery spree….. LOL

6 Ian September 14, 2010 at 11:19 am

Where’s the column for illegal vegetable sales?

7 Ian September 14, 2010 at 11:20 am

I would like to see the regression formula they used for this index.

8 anonamom September 14, 2010 at 11:49 am

I like the “town” of Clayton a lot, but I wonder where it would fall in the scale if they counted being a slumlord as a crime.

9 Anon777 September 14, 2010 at 12:04 pm

Darn that idiot who murdered Ray Casso took Clayton down a notch! And the CV kids will mess it up for next year (this was for 2009, those crimes were 2010). Clayton won’t even make the list after that! LOL

10 Corker September 14, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Congrats to Clayton….

Also interesting that Piedmont, totally surrounded by Oakland, gets ranked 6th in this review……wonder how they worked that out?

11 Me September 14, 2010 at 12:40 pm

The crime is so low because there’s no mcdonalds or gas station to rob. Just kidding good job Clayton my home town of 28 years.

I attribute this to the good people of Clayton and the size/geography of the city more then the police force.

12 SAR September 14, 2010 at 12:41 pm

@ Angry Mom 4

Clayton has almost nothing but homes that are tucked away at the base of Mt. Diablo, this is why “your” crimminals head to the nearest city (Concord) to commit crimes. Just remember that your city is at the base of a mountain not on top of one, so get off.

“summering on the east coast”… why aren’t you the privileged (holier than thou) one!

“I guess Piedmont has the same problems bordering Oakland”… quit it, you should pack your bags and go back to ‘Martha’s Vineyard’ where I’m sure you just came from.

13 If you ain't in first place September 14, 2010 at 12:53 pm

your just another loser.

14 wtf? September 14, 2010 at 1:01 pm

If you don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re”, you’re just another loser.

15 rubio September 14, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Angry Mom,

Did you really say you were “summering”?

Pretentious and pathetic.

16 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 1:30 pm

to SAR,
sounds pretty much like you wish that you lived in Clayton, why are you making fun of someone for going on vacation? oh i know, you’re jealous. The only reason there is any crime here at all is because stupid kids try to act like the ones in concord, stop spreading the ghetto mentality. And angry mom said “the spillover violence from concord” meaning the crimes from concord spread to clayton, that had nothing to do with what you are saying how “our” criminals go to concord to commit crimes….maybe you should read what people say and think a little bit before commenting.

17 warbirds45 September 14, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Biff, Chip run down and get Sherriff Andy, have the Clayton Police spend the night in North Richmond, don’t forget your depends!

18 Drvrdadca September 14, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Do you think that maybe Clayton can get an Olive Garden now?

The real disturbing part of those stats is the 1 murder and 2 forcible rapes. Other than those, nice job Clayton. Are there any vacancies there?

19 Slipper September 14, 2010 at 1:48 pm

It’s amazing how many people want to turn a positive into a negative.

I used to love catching up on Claycord, but the amount of trolls that loe to get a rise out of people just dominate this blog. Very sad….

20 SAR September 14, 2010 at 1:54 pm

@ MMJ – 16

reads like you should be ‘Angry MMJ’… your right, I don’t live in Clayton, so I guess I miss out on all those heavenly hours stuck in stop and go traffic. I guess if I did live there I would be angry too, having to be stuck with my wine sippin’ & cheese snackin’ self while I wait for the next time I go “summering”.

P.S. I can only read what people wright, not what they say… I think?

Have an outstanding “Angry” day!

21 Ian September 14, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I just don’t understand how it could get that high with a murder and two rapes. Like I said, I would like to review the math behind the study. Just how are they weighting these variables. Based on these variables alone, I’d feel safer in Palos Verdes Estates.

22 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 2:07 pm

SAR,

Again you’re showing how uneducated you are. The funny thing is I have never done any of what you just said in the 20 years I’ve lived here. There must be a reason why there is less crime here probably because people like you don’t live here.

P.S. I’m pretty sure “wright” is spelled “write”. hahahahahahahaha

23 SAR September 14, 2010 at 2:09 pm

@ Angry Mom & MMJ

Your right! only bad things happen in other cities, not in dear ‘Clayton’. No one in this town does anything wrong, they are much too ‘upper class’ for that kind of thing. It is all the outsiders that bring Clayton down… why even the kids here would never even think of doing such things as drinking alcohol or doing drugs… =}

24 Where do we find more stats? September 14, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Where can we get the list of the rest of the cities in California?

25 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 2:24 pm

SAR,

Not to sound rude again, but i said in my first post that kids in Clayton try to act like kids in other cities…that means were not perfect at all…and I personally know plenty of Clayton residents that drink and smoke weed on a daily basis, and you can pretty much get any drug you want at clayton valley high school….no one’s perfect but you don’t have to talk down to people because they live in cities with less crime.

26 SAR September 14, 2010 at 2:33 pm

wait a minute…

hey ‘MMJ’, are you ‘Angry Mom’ ? now it’s coming together! apologies to rest of ‘Clayton’, I was starting to think everyone was angry. I’ve lived in Concord for over 45 years and not once did I commit a crime in Clayton… wait, exactly where is the border?

P.S. I gots me diplomy rights here from goodol ‘Clayton High School’. plssstt!

27 Parker Lambert-Wickes III September 14, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Mon Dieux! I could not imagine how my fair hamlet could rank as having such little crime. Then, of course, I realized that we Claytonians never report the petty crimes of the household help – perhaps if they pinch the heirloom sterling, but the triffling sums involved in the day-to-day theft of the “everyday” china and sterling cutlery make it hardly worth the effort. Besides, an police officer will appear and I may be required to grant them entrance – and they probably live in another part of the county!

The real crime, of course, is when I fly my yacht designer in from Italy, Florence actually, and he stands in my foyer, drinking my Chateaux Louis Quinze, and committing pure theft in the appointment of the interior. Now THAT is a crime!

Anyway, as I motored young Parker IV to De La Salle, the chauffeur being otherwise employed taking the Maybach to the “shop” (as he quaintly calls it) . . .

28 Nelson Muntz September 14, 2010 at 2:49 pm

When church takes over “downtown” Clayton crime will go even lower.

29 SK September 14, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Ah, thank you Parker, for just a touch of humor to lighten an otherwise dark and dreary thread! The less-than-couth repartee between poor Mr. SAR and some angry Moms in Clayton only proved that no matter where you live, people are people. Do have a delightful day!

30 SAR September 14, 2010 at 2:58 pm

@ Parker Lambert-Wickes III

I cants reed wat yall said (errrr, rote), but i does belive youse tryin to be funne (and angry).

31 Lord Leopold Plumtree September 14, 2010 at 3:02 pm

SAR, I must say, you are a most irascible woman. I’m having difficulty understanding your anger. It seems quite unfounded. I wonder, just who peed in your Grey Poupon?.

32 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 3:22 pm

SAR,

It’s obvious you have no real responses to anything I say because you have changed the subject every time I have made a point that you cannot argue against. And no, I was defending “angry mom” because she did nothing but give her honest opinion and you went and talked down to her because she lives differently than some people. And this is sad, I will be the bigger man and just drop this whole arguement. I find it funny how someone who has lived in concord 45 years, making you a well grown adult, can be so juvenile, coming on a website hiding their identity to disrespect people and the way they live because you live differently. By the way, I’m only 21 and I find it extremely sad that someone your age comes on Claycord and makes smart ass sarcastic comments to women. Have a good life looking down upon others. Peace.

33 Worst. Neighbor. Ever. September 14, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Apparently the people that compiled this list have never met my neighbor.

34 Atticus Thraxx September 14, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Adjust for population percentage then we can talk. Still, it’s good news for a nice town.

35 Atticus Thraxx September 14, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Unclear how they’re ranking. Total crimes or crimes per population? Too lazy to get the calculator going and doing math.. Still, it’s good news for a nice town.

36 ranti September 14, 2010 at 4:05 pm

CLAYTON IS MOSTLY WHITE! CHRISTIAN , AND HIGH INCOME.THE DRUG CULTURE HAS NOT TAKEN HOLD OF THE CHILDREN YET! NOT ENOUGH SECTION 8 TO BRING IN THE CRIME AND GANG ACTIVITIES. BUT GIVE IT SOME TIME. THE INFESTATION IS COMING ,

37 Wow-such angry sounding people! September 14, 2010 at 4:13 pm

Hey, Parker Lambert-Wickes III, thanks for introducing a little levity into the fray! I’ve been privileged (and not because I have a lot of money, but because I live in a neighborhood with nice neighbors!) to be in Clayton for 14 years, and I haven’t come across anyone who has had an attitude that they’re better than others because they live in Clayton. And Slipper, I agree with you, too, I’ve been reading Claycord for a couple of months now, and it seems like people’s attitudes towards EVERYTHING has deteriorated just since then. Some of these sound like they belong on the Release the Rage section! I will continue to read it though, because it really does keep me up to date on things going on. Oh, well, everyone have a nice afternoon, I’ll be heading home to my red clay back yard with gopher holes and dog peed upon grass pretty soon! :)

38 weppin September 14, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Too bad there’s no “there” there…

39 SAR September 14, 2010 at 4:54 pm

MMJ,

21 years old! why you young wipper snapper, all of my kids are older than you, only difference maybe that they don’t think they’re better than you (maybe that makes them better…)

Anyway, aside from myself trying to remind a few that they are not above or better than anyone else, my comments were all in good fun.

Our friend ‘Parker’ figured it out, anyone can if they would just stop being so ‘Angry’…

Have a nice night kid, it was fun!

P.S. don’t forget to take out the trash for mommy!

40 SAR September 14, 2010 at 5:19 pm

@ Lord Leopold Plumtree

I can’t afford ‘Grey Poupon’, I live in Concord with the rest of my “section 8″ crime causing brethren.

and now if you’ll excuse us, we are off to ‘pillage and blunder’ surrounding townships.

41 The 4th Horseman September 14, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Me thinks Warbirds45 is right on target. I can hear the whistlin’ now as Richie asks Andy for his bullet while walking down a dirt road with a cane pole as they go looking for stripped bass. All in black & white.

The crime pic is what it is–with or without a security patrol.

42 Lol September 14, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Oooooo SAR got the last word. Whatcha gonna dooo. Claycord is fun

43 Meangal September 14, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Once again, THANK YOU Mr. City Manager for the quality of life here in Concord. How is Navato’s quality, wait your really focused on Concord aren’t you. YOU NEED TO START DOING YOUR JOB or the new Council will replace you shortly. Enjoy the ride.

44 OK September 14, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Yes, but one of the states largest criminals owns the biggest house in Clayton. Seeno………

45 thighs of glory September 14, 2010 at 6:35 pm

You want levity? Good-hearted fun, even? A game us transplants can play? Let’s all guess where she summered. Since most of the country is east of here the field is wide open for all kinds of irresponsible speculation. Remember, though: She’s only from Clayton. That means new money, so any beach north of Fire Island is right out. Rehoboth might work, but Bethany can be… um, selective, during the season. My vote actually goes to Diamond City, Arkansas. Nice country, right on the river, and it’s close to Branson.

46 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 6:41 pm

SAR you’re so funny. Im literally laughing. Funny thing is I probably make more money than you have ever made. Anyway, go back to arguing on the computer and hiding you’re face behind a computer screen. Obviously you have nothing better to do with your life thats why you’re stuck in concord. If you would like to stop being a little baby and come talk to me in person that is fine with me. Unless i mean you’re too old to get out of the house, wouldnt want you to break a hip gramps hahah again…you’re hilarious….because you calling me “kid” just makes me feel that much better that I am smarter and better than a well grown senior citizen.

47 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 6:44 pm

and sorry if you don’t hear back from me I have to leave the house because I have a life that doesnt revolve around hating on people in clayton on a computer

48 MMJ September 14, 2010 at 6:46 pm

SAR I bet your children are the ones robbing and messing up concord if they have learned anything from you at all they musttt be terrible people.

49 Robbery watcher September 14, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Concord Robbery Statistics — per California Department of Justice, Attorney General, http://www.ag.ca.gov/crime.
Year – No. of Robberies
2004 – 129
2005 – 197
2006 – 248
2007 – 270
2008 – 216
2009 – 212
Big deal, robberies went down 1.9% in 2009, but they’ve increased by 65% since 2004. How about we go back to 2004 or better?

50 LOL September 14, 2010 at 6:57 pm

sounds like SAR is having a difficult time accepting that he was wrong

51 Connie Dobbs September 14, 2010 at 7:02 pm

He’s literally laughing.

52 anonamom September 14, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Thighs: I didn’t think you could make me laugh, but you did. She said East Coast, so I’m thinking more along the lines of “Joisey City.”

OK: Keep in mind the safe city count is crimes committed IN the city. They don’t count the crimes by the city’s citizens when they go to the neighboring cities, such as in: disguised as Discovery Builders.

53 anonamom September 14, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Robbery@49 Easy, kick out the last 4000 who moved to South Concord, and then shut down Bailey, Kirker Pass and both ends of Hwy 4.

54 No Excuses September 14, 2010 at 7:28 pm

MMJ: Allowance money from Mom doesn’t count. Being paid by Daddy to strut around doesn’t count either–that’s really just more allowance.

55 Happily "Stuck" in Concord September 14, 2010 at 8:33 pm

MMJ, Your comment ” Obviously you have nothing better to do with your life thats why you’re stuck in concord.”

Is this why you are stuck in Clayton? Come on now why are you so nasty in your comment? I have lived in Concord for 22 years, we were raised in Lafayette and Walnut Creek. We love our neighborhood, great families, community feeling and we CARE about our neighbors and all the children.

Why is it that Clayton High has so many problems? Why is it when we attend a Summer Swim Meet at Oakhurst the bar is in full swing and these parents are drinking heavily? I was disgusted as I am raising teens now and a swim meet is about the kids, not drunk adults.

If I am stuck in Concord, then I am the lucky one. I think the reason Clayton has this listing is because of how very small it is, there are no shopping malls, no gas stations, really hardly anything there. It is a small, cute community, but definitely does not offer larger city conveniences.

56 SanDee September 14, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Come on people. Clayton received it fair and square.
Of-course I wish Concord had been third. But since it wasn’t, I am happy our next door neighbor was.

57 Anon September 14, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I think Angry Mom is FUS. It’s good for a laugh anyway.

Congrats Clayton.

58 Anon September 14, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Before you get too high on yourself, Angry Mom, you should check Piedmont schools’ test scores against CVHS and Clayton schools’. Piedmont puts Clayton to shame.

59 Steph September 14, 2010 at 9:28 pm

I agree, Happily Stuck in Concord!! Well said.

60 Happily Out of Ghetto-Cord September 14, 2010 at 9:43 pm

“Why is it that Clayton High has so many problems?”

Um, not like it’s exclusively kids from Clayton. I’m sure they cause some problems, but there do happen to be a lot of kids from a town called “Concord” that also attend CVHS.

And oh my, adults drinking at a swim meet in THE BAR? I only WISH there was a bar at every swim meet we go to. And evidently never been to the Concord City Meet and partied it up with the groups of people who are smart enough to set up their pop-up shades OUTSIDE the pool area…2 solid days of BBQ & Booze.

61 anon September 14, 2010 at 11:54 pm

Clayton is like a housing development in Concord. You can find many housing developments in Concord that would have comparable numbers to Clayton. Just like if you look at the Northgate area of Walnut Creek (where little to none of their major crimes occur). I think it is great that Clayton has these type of numbers – it is a wonderful little City but to make any comparisons to the whole City of Concord (the largest in Contra Costa County – with all its diverse areas) is just absurd.

And yes there are students at Clayton Valley High School from Concord – it is located in Concord. There are also a number of students that are neither from Concord or Clayton – they are coming from other cities that are part of the Mt. Diablo school district.

62 SAR September 15, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Hi ‘MMJ’

Sorry I had to stop the back and forth bantering last evening, it was gettin’ late and I had to apply ‘Bengay’ to my bunions before my early evening nap…

Anyway, I hope you can make it out the ‘Blue Star Moms’ charitable event at ‘McQuire Devil Mountain Harley Davidson’ in Pittsburg (2240 Loveridge Rd.) this Saturday the 18th (between noon and 4pm) my band ‘Maria’s Fault’ will be performing to inorder to help raise funds for the troops that are serving overseas.

For more info visit:

P.S. I’m the geezer on the skins.

63 AUTISTICavocado September 15, 2010 at 1:09 pm

i am not happy at all with these results. I believe that concord is one of the safest places to live. Oakland is a perfectly fine place to live.

64 confused CARROT September 15, 2010 at 2:52 pm

I regretfully have to agree, clayton is by far one of the most dangerest places to live! what with all the guns and crack on the streets! not safe at all
for me or my kids!

65 Yes.. Indeed.. September 16, 2010 at 8:50 am

Gee, Does anyone notice the list contains places that have very few people of color? I’m sure its no accident. It’s not racism if it’s just the truth. People need to own up to their own people’s shortcomings and stop making excuses. Ghetto’s are made by ghetto people.
