A vehicle crashed into the Walnut Creek Post Office on Oak Grove & Citrus this afternoon.

The vehicle, which has Oregon license plates, had one occupant, who received minor to moderate injuries.

The Walnut Creek building inspector was called out to inspect the building for structural damage.

No word yet on the cause of the crash.

Thanks to Radar for the top four photos, and Daniel & Rebecca for the bottom ones! They are very much appreciated!

Sure hope they did not want to mail the SUV back to Oregon. Man, that would take a lot of stamps….but the car would have been rejected, insufficient packaging……you need brown paper and string…..

Or, was this an attempt at a drive through, did they think the post office was a CVS or Walgreens?

Or, a meager attempt at road rage and going postal….

sorry too hot and I am getting silly….

Nice post, David. Made me laugh.

The woman was awake and talking as the paramedics took her to the hospital as a precaution. The post office is a mess but was still open for business. LOL good one David!

FYI the drive up mailbox is on the N/W corner of the property.

Dang! Glad nobody was seriously hurt…

But my question still stands.. Why do people “Floor it” out of what they think is reverse? Its pretty obvious you’re going straight and not backwards.

Ya know that place is right next to Mary’s Pizza, perhaps she just missed….

I gotta hang up now, and check the mail.

must be a trend..car crashed into the front of Europa Restaurant today in Orinda!

I work a couple doors down from there and was told it was a 70 something year old lady. I will probably get reamed for saying this, but I think there should be an age cut off for driving…or an annual driving test that has to be passed. I don’t ever remember hearing about any “drive thru’s” by someone under 70.

11 Scoots September 2, 2010 at 6:11 pm

She should’ve saved that move for the DMV.

I was at the bev mo and saw all the emergency vehicles pass by. A postal employee told me it was an 82 year old lady that passed out foot stepped on the gas and woke up inside the building.

So was she really from Oregon, or just another person cheating the system?

14 CW September 2, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Yikes! I’m glad this didn’t happen yesterday afternoon when I sent my daughter in to this very branch to drop off some letters for me.

15 Wouldn't it be Cool.... September 2, 2010 at 6:48 pm

if some Old Geezer crashed through the front of a 7-11 at exactly the same time as it was being robbed…..and it all got caught on camera….

16 Moneypenny September 2, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Yikes, I think there should be a mandatory driving test every 2 years after the age of 70. I wouldn’t automatically take the right to drive from an elderly person simply because they are old. Some need this independence like oxygen. Many are still very young at 70+. My father and mother seem years younger than their age. Just make sure they can operate a car safely for their sakes and for others…….

Look out for them urban terrorist!

We are going to see a lot more of this as the population ages. Especially in Walnut Creek. I work across the Street from JM Hospital and we have had 3 cars drive thru our fence in the last 8-9 months. At least once a week we have damage to staff/patient vehicles. I sit at a window that overlooks our parking lot with my popcorn and cringe. I leave my car at home now and ride a bike!

hey, I like the silly David…that was pretty good…

Yikes, I am right with you. And what’s more, my 66-yo mother agrees, too. She took her last driving test in 1965 but her license will be good until/unless she goes bat blind or does something stupid like, umm, drive into a post office.

Too many people pass a test once and then develop bad habits over the years, habits which never have a chance to be corrected because they are never re-tested.

My neighbors are both 96 and the recently purchased a new car. I drive behind them coming home and they are awesome. They also bring over wine and cheese on occasion.

24 brianwc September 2, 2010 at 10:42 pm

Haha, I just left there and wondered what happened. Good thing my box is the next aisle over :)

25 Hmmm September 2, 2010 at 10:53 pm

This could have been a diabetic problem. No way to know for sure by the details printed.

26 Charles-the-cat September 2, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Lends a whole new meaning to the phrase “going postal”.

27 YV Warrior September 2, 2010 at 11:33 pm

She was looking for the Olive Garden?

Glad no one was hurt.

28 The Original Anon E. Mouse September 2, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Will they be adding a drive-thru to the WC DMV as well?

29 barklane September 3, 2010 at 7:07 am

Making people take a test for driving after a certain age is great but what about the 200 +/- drivers with expired licenses they caught in Rossmoor a few years ago when they handed out the new gate stickers?! They were indignant that they couldn’t get gate passes without a valid license and registration.

30 ConcordCatLady September 3, 2010 at 8:02 am

Not a Toyota… how strange.

31 Ian September 3, 2010 at 10:14 am

Yikes & Moneypenny, make it every 6 months and I agree.

But really, what do you expect from a driver that’s not even allowed to put gas in there own tank where they are from.

32 JimBobJones September 3, 2010 at 3:44 pm

This is why I steer clear of any car with Oregon or Washington plates. I have driven in many states, and they seem to be the worst by far.

33 Nom de Plume September 3, 2010 at 11:14 pm

Not to add fuel to the which state has the worst drivers, but my vote goes to Idaho. Seriously….. watch out for them!

34 Buck Million September 4, 2010 at 2:32 am

Sounds like a mid-afternoon power nap gone awry!

35 revcoco September 4, 2010 at 8:24 pm

Regarding all the “geezer” comments, wait until it is your turn…if you live long enough to become one. It ain’t easy.

37 Old People Hate September 4, 2010 at 9:25 pm

I think if you are old (anything over say 55) then you should be forced to take a yearly behind the wheel driving test and physical to show that you are capable of driving safely.

Old people mess up everything.

38 Lisetteshun September 7, 2010 at 7:03 am

I’m just relieved my mom is ok……

39 CABRIG September 7, 2010 at 11:58 am

Hey Revcoco,

I realize “it aint easy” as you put it, to be old. But one must know their limitations. The fear of losing one’s independence blocks out one’s ability to make clear decisions. Therefore the state must step in to protect its citizens.
