Turkey crossing in Concord’s Crystyl Ranch

The turkeys were out in full force the other day in Crystyl Ranch!

About 25 of our feathered friends decided to go for an afternoon stroll through the neighborhood, before heading back to the open space.

Thanks to “Jacki” for these great photos!

All of these members of the California Legislature out together! How cute! Shouldn’t they be in Sacramento trying to put together a budget? Maybe they can’t find their way!

A little early for a Thanksgiving turkey shoot, but when opportunity knocks…

Wow, fabulous pictures, Jacki.

Did that SUV stop for the turkey crossing ?

That’s a lot of turkeys! It almost looks like a Concord City Council meeting.

I love seeing these turkeys! I only see them maybe once a year or so for a few minutes and they are OFF! Last year I was inside and heard a huge ruckus on my roof and sure enough it was them making their appearance.

Yummy turkeys just wandering around!

That was the TV forum of the candidates for November’s election.

Watch where you step. No bare footing for a few days.

You know, these things are sort of weird/cute the first time around. After awhile, and especially after having to step over the presents that they leave behind, they become an annoyance.

That is SO cute.
Once in a while I’ll see a turkey or two when driving on Marsh Creek Rd.

What leaves behind big poop for someone else to clean up? OK-Get Set-GO.

Somewhere in Concord these phrases are being shouted across the Kettle homestead:
“Hot damn! just in time for thanksgiving! Ma, bring me da 12 gauge!”
“yes’em Pa!”

who’s pooping in who’s territory?

What came first? The turkeys or Crystyl Springs

A lot of wild turkeys showing up in my yard in Martinez, also. They are beautiful birds, but when do you call it a population explosion. Too bad they don’t eat pigeons!.

We have at least 3-4 of those same turkey families in our neighborhood. For the past, what, maybe 5 years now? Huge flocks start off in the spring, wandering around, all over. Up, down the streets they go, 20-30 of them at a time. We also have the “3 Amigos”–3 large male turkeys who stick together and cry out “twok, twok TWOK!!!” when called out to. they fluff their tail feathers and march ahead. This spring, there were the smallest baby turkeys yet–18 of them, with mama leading the group. Looked like baby sparrows marching along the ground!

No idea how they ended up here, of all places. Our properties back up to open space, and Mt. Wanda is within walking distance. Lots of people here shoo them off, but so many of our yards are not fenced, it’s hopeless. Didn’t know turkeys could fly until a huge flock of them landed on my roof one day. What a sight!

went to Kindles for lunch while I was waiting in the car….saw the most beautiful bird, and I’m not that much into looking at birds…this was small – shiny black not that black that chgs colors…pure black but when it opened it’s wings….omg….was a beautiful brillant orange…in what would be it’s arm pits…was so surprised…wonder what type of bird it was?

SK, why do you want to insult the turkey’s. The City Council and the rest of that crowd are no where near as good as a turkey. I have never seen a turkey it did not like, but a city council or city manager?????

lol sort of…..

I think Edi will be a lone beacon of reason on the council.

As all of them voted for the tax increase, they all lost my support.

Wow that’s a lot of dang turkeys. Hope they make it back and forth OK. But if I see any near my garden, all bets are off. PETA be damned.

19 opie September 1, 2010 at 5:54 pm

Why does cranberrys and taters keep comming to mind? Maybe I’m being confused with the City Manager.

Why is the City Council leading the flock? I guess the flocked us.

22 Walnut Creek resident September 1, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Wow! I had no idea there were so many of them! I’ve only seen about a half-dozen or so at a time.

That’s not a flock — that’s a whole convention!

Great photos! Thanks for posting– :)

23 The Jokester September 1, 2010 at 8:25 pm

Who gives a flock?

24 Eb September 1, 2010 at 11:28 pm

There are about 20 turkeys doing a daily bug hunt up and down Dana Ridge in Clayton a few mornings each week as well. They have not been making much of a poop hazard so far. They do tend to block traffic now & then.

25 jtkatec September 2, 2010 at 8:44 am

Eb, those must be the sacred turkeys of Dana Ridge

26 Eb September 2, 2010 at 9:23 am

I don’t know the Sacreds, or if’n or not they own any turkeys. They might belong to Mr. Douglas’ or Mr. Ziffle tho.

27 jtkatec September 2, 2010 at 9:34 am

Eb, I was joshing on the sacred cows of India, where you can not shoo a cow out of the way if it is in a lane of traffic.

Sorry, my sense of humor is a bit obtuse.

Who is Mr. Ziffle or Mr. Douglas?

28 Cal Native September 2, 2010 at 9:40 am

They are not native to the area and nothing but a nuisance. Come around Thanksgiving time there will be a few less.

29 SK September 2, 2010 at 10:44 am

jtkatec, Don’t you remember the t.v. show, Green Acres? Maybe you are too young. :)

30 jtkatec September 2, 2010 at 11:51 am

SK, yes, I remember the show with Zsa Zsa (or was it Eva) Gabor, with her accent and beautiful coutured hair. Her husband used to have to climb the telephone pole to use the phone.

Still don’t remember the two names of Ziffle or Douglas. which characters did they play?

31 jtkatec September 2, 2010 at 11:52 am

And what was the pig’s name?

32 cletus mcphearson September 2, 2010 at 12:35 pm

I ate one the other day and wasn’t to impressed. Next time ill try smoking it.
