Mail thief spotted in Concord, watch out!

September 1, 2010 8:44 am · 13 comments

I received the following email from a reader near Santa Paula Drive, which is off Oak Grove Road in Concord….

This morning around 5am I was laying in bed with my eyes open and saw the headlights of a vehicle shining very brightly in my bedroom window.

I quickly got up and looked outside to see a woman running from my neighbors yard. She then went to another neighbors yard and shined a flashlight in their mailbox and ran back to her vehicle.

The woman was driving what looked like a gray or silver smaller Toyota pickup with a camper shell. I ran outside and drove around looking for her so I could get her license plate, but she was already gone from the area.

We’ve chatted about this in the past. It’s important to not leave your mail in your mailbox overnight, and don’t put anything out for the mailman to take, because chances are the thieves will get to it first.

Gosh. I actually had my identity stolen due to that in the past. Yup, Wells Fargo mailed me a check. If you cash it, then it opens up an acct for you.

I’ve never banked at Wells Fargo Mortgage, or whatever it’s called.

Somehow this letter/check got into the hands of a liar. They signed the check and cashed it. Weeks later I get a letter from a collection agency stating that I owe money. I think it was a $3000 loan at about 25% interest rate.

Anyone who knows me knows that I would never borrow $3000, I’d save up for it. And I would never get a loan with a rate which is more than 9%

It is unfortunate that these lenders, banks, etc don’t even call you to verify that you opened the account. Or even send you a letter thanking you for opening up the account. They had no way of vaildating my signature, so apparently ANY signature works.

I never leave mail in my mailbox now. If I have to mail something I drop it off at the post office.

5am is a wierd time to do that- maybe she was high.

I’ve had mail stolen in the past in broad daylight. Now that I am living the condo life the mailboxes all lock so it’s not an issue. For those with houses, how about locking mailboxes? Or have simple mail slots installed in the door? A bit of a pain if you have outgoing mail though.

I strongly suggest, if you have an outside mailbox, to consider creating a mailslot instead. I have one on the front of my house on the wall beside the garage. The letter carrier drops the mail into the slot, and it collects in a basket on the other side of the wall inside of my garage.

^ pointing to Andrea’s post. High or not there’s no reason for any person to steal someone’s mail so don’t make any excuses for them.

We’ve had trouble in the Springwood area for a few months with thefts. They’ve taken gas out of cars, broken into cars, and taken things out of people’s yards. Beware of a small group that comes around asking if you want to sell your car. They were going door-to-door asking this. Then they were seen driving through neighborhood(dead end street) several times. Sometimes in the middle of the night. Haven’t been able to get license plate yet. Driving a white truck. Possibly a Ford F150. They are hispanic, and it’s been two males, and another time one male and one female.

at least heave a rock through their windshield…..

@Neighborhood Watching..Did you call the POLICE. Have these individuals checked out!
Mail thefts..Had some here in my neighborhood..out of mail boxes and hanging off of them. Better be a sturdy locked one or they can pop it with a screw driver. Others have the mail slot to drop mail in..but then guess what..they leave out going mail hanging on it and it is usually on the front of the garage, not by a front door. Be careful out there.

I have a PO Box for all my “important” mail. Thieves can have the junk mail that comes to the house! Losers!

Probably not a coincedence that they do this on the first of the month. Lots of bills being paid in the outgoing mail.

You can’t just “put in a mail slot” & expect the mailman to deliver your mail. It would have to be approved by the US Postal Service. We have mail slots into our garage on our side of the street, but the other side has regular mail boxes. Our neighbor called quite a few years back to see if he could put in a mail slot into his garage & they denied him.

The Post Office denied your neighbor’s request to reposition his mailbox to his garage??? That’s messed up…… okay, so does he get to sue the Post Office if his mail gets stolen?

What is up with that???

I live up in the hills now and worry about this. My mailbox is a good walk down the hill. I need to look into a locking box.
