A 26-year-old Pleasant Hill swim coach has been arrested for possession of child pornography.
The following is from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office….
Detectives from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Sexual Assault Unit this morning arrested 26-year-old Alex Bursch of Antioch for possession of child pornography.
The Detectives launched an investigation following a tip. This morning at about 8AM, a search warrant was served at Bursch’s residence on the 5000 block of Wagon Wheel Way in Antioch.
There, several computers and storage devices containing thousands of images of child pornography were confiscated.
Bursch is a teacher at the Los Medanos Elementary School in Pittsburg. He was arrested this morning at the school without incident. Bursch is also a coach and lifeguard for a local swim team, the Pleasant Hill Dolfins.
Bursch has been booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on three charges of possession of child pornography. His bail is set at $60,000.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any relevant information on Bursch is asked to call the Office of the Sheriff at 925-313-2621.

There have been studies that have found that at parties and family gatherings pedophiles usually avoid hanging around with adults. They instead spend time around the kids. First, they try to gain the trust of the children by being extra friendly and exclusively hanging around the young kids.
When you are at a barbecue or family gathering, are you watching your kids? Who seems to be spending unusually long periods of time with your kids? Are there any people who seem too friendly around your kids? Is there some relative or friend who always seems to be buying your kid toys or offering him or her candy? Is there some relative who offers to take your young child out to the movies or to go get something to eat? Ice cream? 7-Eleven? Does a relative offer to take your kid to the pool?
It’s always the ones who seem unusually friendly towards the kids.
I used to think Child porn was pictures of naked kids until 20/20 did a show on it – it is soooo much worse and disgusting and SICK. The innocent kids in those pictures are forced to do sick things. It is horrible abuse. Hang the Bastard today!

I feel sick. I do Adult Swim at PHMS and during the summer, some of the dolphin coaches give private lessons in the lanes next to us. There were a couple of male swim teachers, but there was one guy, who wore glasses and was so skinny his chest looked concave, that creeped me out the way he was talking to the little girl he was teaching. Nothing dirty, but creepy and I remember thinking “what if” this guy was a perve?

Not everything is as it seems. Since he is a swim coach he could pictures of his swimmers at meets in their suits; wouldn’t these be considered child porn? I certainly have seen pictures of coaches and their athletes everywhere. I think he is innocent until proven and until then take your stones and hold onto them. Throw them when there is proof. This could either be a case of a pedophile or a misunderstanding, I choose to remain neutral until specific proof is revealed. You all might want to think calmly and clearly then act; actions from emotion almost never gain anything.

I have observed this guy for several years at the pool. My kids swim on the team he coaches. He was always odd, very socially awkward. He appeared harmless, he is just really weird. He would not have had an opportunity to do anything at the pool as there are always so many parents and other coaches on deck, this is a very big team. Anything inappropriate would not have happened there, no opportunity.
I do not know about his teaching time. Does anyone know where the tip came from? A child, friend, concerned parent?
Even though it is so, so wrong we can only hope he just had the pictures. This was just a sick fantasy he indulged in, that no child has ever been touched by him.

With regard to adults who prefer the company of young children, not all of them are pedophiles. However, studies have shown that pedophiles consistently gravitate towards spending large amounts of time trying to gain the trust of young children. This takes many forms. These types of people may hang around parks and observe young children or they may watch young children near elementary schools from the comfort of their cars.
The motives of these pedophiles is always hidden at first. They gain the trust of their victims first by getting close, and then they take advantage of them.
With regard to child pornography, if the police arrested this man they definitely have a good reason. These aren’t just baby photos of a child taking a bath. These photos most likely contain graphic pictures of rape and abuse. The police know their job, and they arrested this man because they truly believe that he is a threat to young children.
@Justice – Aw c’mon…do you really think they’d raid this guy’s house at 8 a.m. and haul him away in cuffs for swimsuit photos? I’m going to stick my neck out here and say what the law enforcement officers called porn was porn. That’s their job to ID it as such. If swimsuit pictures were porn we’d all be in the slammer! We’re talking explicit, exploitative & graphic images that would make most of us cringe, wince and maybe gag.

This is so sad. I grew up with him and coached with him years ago. He was always so nice, but didn’t socialize with his peers very much. Was always engaging in tickling wars with kids and giving them piggy backs everywhere. Hope he never crossed the line with extremely inappropriate behavior with little kids. So sad because I grew up on Pleasant Hill Dolfins and I hope this does not tarnish their name.

No one is quick to judge He was under investigation. The police didn’t just randomly knock at his door and ask if they can search his house for child porn. Now that his little sicko secret is out…..I wouldn’t doubt it if kids start talking to their parents that their teacher or swim coach did inappropriate things to them. Opportunities exist around every corner, that’s why pervs like him put themselves in coaching positions. I’ve watched the mom’s at the pool sit and chat, talk on their cell phones, read books and not pay attention to where their child is. Several just drop their kid off and drive away. Don’t be so confident that he had no opportunity to act inappropriately in, at or around the pool. Pigs like him are sneaky. There are all sorts of hidden cameras available now … he could have been videotaping kids crotches with the hidden camera in his sunglasses. I hope the pool director has checked the pool bathrooms to be certain there were no hidden cameras anywhere …
All I will say to the angry mob ready to lynch the guy is that the full story has yet to be disclosed. But if it turns out he is guilty of these accusations I would be shocked but let the justice system do its own job. I grew up swimming with him on the PHD team and work at a local pool with him as well. He was always a dedicated swimmer and worker who was smart and nice to everyone he encountered on a daily basis. He went above and beyond to help anyone in need and was a reliable stand up citizen that the community would have been proud to have. He was an asset. So I find it hard to believe that he could do something this terrible. So put down your pitch forks and lynching rope until the case discloses the complete story.

Alex was a member of the PH Dolfins for 10+ years as a swimmer and junior coach. For the past 6 summers he has been an age group coach. That is 16+ years of affiliation to the Dolfins. His parents were PHD board members for years and his brother was on the team as well. Not sure you can know a coach any better than that. He also was named Los Medanos Elem. Teacher of the Year for 2010. You just never know. I and many other PHD parents are absolutely shocked and appalled that someone we all thought we knew and trusted as our kids coach could be capable of something so sick and disturbing.
1. If you’ve known somebody for years and have always found their character to be sound, then it’s reasonable to give them the benefit of the doubt.
2. If the only thing you know about someone is what you read on a blog post (even a first-class blog like Claycord), then it’s reasonable to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I would like to echo what phdmom2 said — Alex seemed like an earnest and dedicated coach. In fact, he was my daughter’s favorite coach on the team. It is shocking and depressing that he has ruined his life in this way and that he has tainted my fond memories of my kids’ summers on the team. Maybe I was naive, but I certainly did not imagine that Alex was capable of anything like this and I never observed anything that seemed like a warning sign to me at the time. I have already had some uncomfortable conversations with my kids because of this. It’s very sad, vey disturbing.
When my toddler was molested by his father, I also thought “I never saw it coming” and the truth is, you never do. These people are sick their whole lives. There is no changing them, they will not get better, and they don’t care about anyone but themselves. Alex Bursch is just one more failed member of society who is going to be locked away for a few years, emerge, and re-offend. He will never be fixed, you will never be able to trust him again, and the only thing you can do is try to remain as NORMAL as possible with your children. Don’t invoke shame in them by carrying on saying that he is a bad individual and that he was doing this and that. If something DID happen, you want your children to feel safe and tell you. If you invoke shame, it will never come out. Just my 2 cents since I’ve been dealing with a child rapist and we’re STILL not in court at this point.

The internet is not anonymous. When they arrest a person for child porn, they take the suspect’s computer. On the computer they can look up the cookies and internet history. They can see complete records what websites he visited and when.
They will find that he repeatedly visited child porn websites and downloaded graphic photos of children being raped and molested. They can also get the records from his internet service provider and find out every single website that he visited and when. This mostly likely wasn’t just an accidental download. You will most likely find records of hours upon hours of child porn website viewing.
If you think that you can hide the websites that you visit, you are wrong. There are records of every single website that you visit. Even on a wireless network, people can see the websites that you are viewing. Do you use free WiFi at cafes or Starbucks? Your websites are all publicly displayed. People can see everything that you look at.
There is no security on these free public WiFi networks. Even pay WiFi networks are insecure. The only websites that you visit that cannot be seen by others are https sites such as banking websites.
That was my Daughter’s teacher last year. WTF is wrong with the School District and the Principle. Don’t they screen these SICK PHUCKS

I am so saddened for the children and the parents going through this. My kids aren’t on swim teams, but my youngest son has a serious crush on a little girl at school who has been coached by this man for all her years of swimming. He said she told him “My swim coach was arrested by the police”. He asked “what for”. She said “You don’t want to know”. So my son said he tried to tell her funny stories for the whole day because, in his words: “She just looked so sad, Mom. Like she just wanted to cry. And I didn’t want her to get embarrassed at school for crying”. Again, I feel so bad for the parents and children involved in this. It is an opportunity for all of us to talk more with our own children about these things and I’m taking it as this will be talked about up for a long time now. It’s just so difficult as there is no explanation for this kind of illness.

I hope you know Alex personally and on a different level than most of the other bloggers. Because if you don’t, your case is weak. Yes, you are allowed to be enraged by this, all moral beings are disgusted when the true crime is proven.
I have known Alex for over ten years, he has been my coach, my friend’s coach and I have coached next to him. I have never had the feeling he was a danger to children and I never heard a bad thing about him until now. Unless the police come through with evidence that they share with the public that is specific; the court will find him innocent until proven guilty. I do not care about your anger, this case will be resolved either way, if he was guilty or not, by people who are level headed and truly believe what the facts and their intuition tell them. If this case isn’t resolved that way, then not only do we have a potential pedophile and a corrupt public.
Then there is the issue with all the petty comments. If you only have something to say about the way he looks, or that you knew him in high school and he was a nerd; grow up. Get a life, put your passion to real use. God forbid should someone be a nerd, god forbid they don’t meet the social appearance requirements. Folks, maybe a little clarification will help, from someone that retired after many years investigating these types of cases.
1) The child pornography (CP) images we’re talking about (in general since I haven’t seen Burch’s files) are NOT swimming pool pictures, these are graphic, naked pictures and VIDEOS of children. Not questionable older teen aged children… these are images of sexual acts, graphic stuff that will make your stomach turn and sometimes cry over the content. Violent videos of rapes and other terrible things children should never be subjected to… films of crimes being committed!
2) The officers don’t randomly ‘search’ someone’s house for child pornography (CP). The officers have to convince a Judge that probable cause exists and the Judge signs a Search Warrant. In fact, they had to get two warrants… so don’t think this is a fluk or mistake that the officers were hitting Burch’s house.
3) If the officers arrested and booked Burch, it’s likely that he confessed to the possession, or the ‘evidence’ of his possession and control of the computer was overwhelming.
4) WHY HASN’T ANYONE ASKED… IF THIS WAS IN ANTIOCH, WHERE THE ^%$%# WAS ANTIOCH PD??? The Sheriff’s Dept (in my experience) will contact the local agency and allow them to take a case. The Sheriff’s Dept is just too busy to add extra cases, inside a city with it’s own police department. If you live in Antioch, you better call APD and ask why they aren’t doing anything about these CP cases. According to the Times, Burch lived in the “5000 block of Wagon Wheel Way” which according to my map is fully inside Antioch.
5) The bail is unfortunately, very low on these crimes. For the first time (they’re caught) offenders.
6) Make sure you follow the case, and if you feel that justice isn’t served, call the District Attorney’s office and make your feelings known… the DA is elected by the People, you’re intitled to good representation by the DA.
Sorry for the long rant, these CP cases boil my blood.
