Welcome back, Mr. & Mrs. Anonymous

July 29, 2010 14:41 pm · 84 comments

We turned anonymous commenting off for a few days on CLAYCORD.com, but now, it’s back. Feel free to comment anonymously when/if you want.

Thanks to all of you who signed up for a user name while anonymous commenting was down. Please use that in the future, it makes it easy to identify you during a conversation.

Mr. Mayor, did you notice people were nicer to each other once we had names? Of course, I used my real name, duh…forgot I could have used a silly one. But I’ll sick with it.

thanks,

2 Ian July 29, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Hmm… Interesting…

3 britgeekgal July 29, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Drat!

I really enjoyed the sudden drop in trolling/racist/baiting comments. Ah well, I suppose it was too good to last!

4 Leigha July 29, 2010 at 2:53 pm

I really liked that there weren’t any anon posters, everything was much more civil.

5 Mr. Mayor July 29, 2010 at 3:00 pm

I will try to keep it more civil around here.

6 Claycordian July 29, 2010 at 3:01 pm

I agree, I liked the more civil atmosphere as well.

7 Bubba July 29, 2010 at 3:02 pm

??????? You STILL need to log in.

8 britgeekgal July 29, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Mr. Mayor

Actually *enforcing* the ‘no racist comments’ rule would go a long way. Some of the sewage spilled forth by the anon commentators definitely crossed the line of social decency. Let ‘em froth and rave on the politics/whatever threads, maybe?

9 Bubba July 29, 2010 at 3:05 pm

It was more interesting with anon posters.
Now it’s kind of boring. I like Claycord but ……….Yawn.

10 NIKKI P July 29, 2010 at 3:19 pm

I noticed their are way less comments than usual. Who cares about the anon people. They can create a user name as ANON so from a readers stand point it’s all the same. I say if people don’t like it, then they should start their own blog.

11 nat-zero July 29, 2010 at 3:19 pm

still told me i had to log in to post.. so much for being the first anonymous poster again. :)

12 Dog Lover July 29, 2010 at 3:19 pm

Controlling the undesirables is simply a matter of not responding to any ANONYMOUS commenter.

13 Concordanon July 29, 2010 at 3:27 pm

So, Mr. Mayor, are you going to tell us why you turned off anonymous posting, then turned it back on? What did your experiment reveal?

I agree with britgeekgal. Enforcing the “no racist comments” rule would go a long way towards keeping discussions civil.

14 anon July 29, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Furst!

15 David Molstad July 29, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I”ll stick with my name, I certainly have nothing to hide and I am accountable for my posts even when I to become agitated.

Helen is correct in one thing, it is so darn easy to be a nasty insulting person when there is no accountability. If you have something to say and you don’t have the courage to stand up for what you say then perhaps it should not be said. There are acceptation, but the norm should be accountability.

One of the benefits of freedom is accountability and we should celebrate our freedom as often and joyously as possible.

16 Atticus Thraxx July 29, 2010 at 3:54 pm

I don’t understand what that was all about, but I’m glad the trolls are back. Was getting pretty damn boring, everyone being nice and all.

17 NIKKI P July 29, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Go David!

18 Lari July 29, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Yes, why do we still have to not only log in with our name, but e-mail, too? I’d really prefer not giving my email….

19 Village Idiot July 29, 2010 at 4:01 pm

I am the VILLAGE IDIOT as every town needs one.

20 Babs July 29, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Hopefully, we all can be more understanding of misspellings, too…many brillant people can’t spell, as long as we can understand what your trying to say it should be ok…same with grammar. People get excited and type too fast, I raise my hand to that one!!!!

21 leet haxor July 29, 2010 at 4:04 pm

If we want to be identified we will use a name that people know, otherwise, there’s a reason for staying anonymous.

If you’d like to know who is posting you can get a plugin that tracks a comment’s technical data, you could track comments by IP address. Otherwise it is at our discretion, nothing stops one from registering a fake email and a fake account using a pseudonym, it just adds the extra step.

22 EdiBirsan July 29, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Mayor should consider regular ‘no anon’ holidays or a week just for fun.

23 Nelson Muntz July 29, 2010 at 4:25 pm

This is good. It was too vanilla with the same small group of people commenting.

24 anonymous July 29, 2010 at 4:31 pm

23 posts and no anonymous yet?

First……

25 Now do you know me? July 29, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I still don’t understand how people feel they “know someone” because they post with a name vs. anon.

I don’t know babs from britgeekal from bubba or dog lover. To me they are all anon.

If you do know the difference, you’re probably spending way to much time on this site wasting your company’s money and bandwidth! :)

26 Mad Mom July 29, 2010 at 4:42 pm

I must admit, I liked not having all the hate rants these past few days. But it’s true…I can always just choose not to read them. However, the intelligence level seemed a lot higher without all the trolls.

27 Babs July 29, 2010 at 4:54 pm

we know each other just by the way people write their views, it’s easier to follow their point of view. Plus we have actually made arrangements to meet in person. Actually, it is kind of fun esp. at city council mtgs. to try and figure out who is who from CLAYCORD.

28 KC July 29, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Now do you know me?
It isn’t a matter of knowing anyone. Using an established name facilitates responses. Some of the time when many users are online the sequence numbers change as comments are posted causing confusion with regard to whom you have directed your response.
Got it now?

29 adingoatemybaby July 29, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Let’s see if the short change makes a difference. There will likely be people who used Anon because they were too lazy to log in (yes, even that first time). Now that they’re on…. well, no reason to go back.

30 No Excuses July 29, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Sorry Babs and all. Turn on spell checker, type more slowly, and preview your comments if you don’t want to seem to be too undereducated. There is No Excuse for using the wrong you’re, your, it’s, its, two, to, too; and a whole lot more. I expect “two others to help police you too”. When you try to make an argument with too many errors, it’s easy to just assume overall ignorance.

31 Phred July 29, 2010 at 5:30 pm

Phred is my real name, (Fred ), just spelt differently on here, and I never had to or wanted to use another name or be an “anon” when I already have a name. I have used the Ph spelling of my name since early high school ( just for fun ), and I graduated from Clayton Valley High School in Concord, CA in 1970. I only “know” one person on here, in person, from high school, ( Radar ). We are all the same in this wonderful world. One Big Happy Family, so Peace to you all and please try to get along with your fellow “human”. Phred

32 Atticus Thraxx July 29, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Misspell away Babs. You’ll only be graded on spelling and grammar by anal retentive, poorly medicated shut-ins with mommy/daddy issues. So who gives a shit? Just be clever for God’s sake.

33 Anonapuss July 29, 2010 at 5:41 pm

You people must be doing it wrong. Both my google and firefox browsers have auto- spelling suggestions showing up in wavy red underline on mispelled words… like just now on misspelled.
I thought maybe because I have so much open source software (except for the OS.. Windoz 7) it was an add-on Aspell. But nope it’s built into the browsers.
Right click in this box and I have the option to “Check Spelling”.
Maybe this will help the impaired among you.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3497/

I don’t list internet exploder cuz it’s a piece of poo. Anyone running it deserves their viruses and trojans.
Bah HUM bug!

34 Anna, The Lemon Lady July 29, 2010 at 5:48 pm

I’m still me. So, world out there…please don’t let fruit rot on the ground when people in our community are hungry. Food Banks, Soup Kitchens, Food Pantries, churches, etc. usually accept homegrown fruit for donation to feed the hungry. Please remember the “lemon lady” before you toss that zucchini back to compost, or grow too many tomatoes or watch your plums drop to the ground. Apples, oranges, lemons, green beens – we take ‘em all! Sincerely, Anna http://www.thelemonlady.blogspot.com or AnnaAndAva@gmail.com THANK YOU!

35 Mr. E July 29, 2010 at 5:57 pm

We get to grade the posts! Goody! :D

36 inmotion July 29, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I say get rid of anonymous posting all together, let people be accountable for whatever babble they spew.

37 Babs July 29, 2010 at 6:21 pm

I wondered how long it would take before someone got the misspell joke?!?!?

38 Babs July 29, 2010 at 6:24 pm

I think there are two types of oops: someone like me who types too fast and doesn’t want to lose there thoughts and then people who have a hard time spelling. Sometimes when people correct others, it seems to be done with a mean spirit.

39 Babs July 29, 2010 at 6:25 pm

see I did it again….yes, I know their not there…SORRY

40 observer July 29, 2010 at 6:36 pm

I totally agree with “No excuses”; sorry Atticus. To constantly misspell words and not give a shit, shows ignorance and lack of education. And, Atticus, I do not consider myself “anal, poorly medicated with mommy/daddy issues.”

To perhaps make a “typo” is one thing, but to constantly not be able to use your; you’re; there; they’re; their; its; it;s; to; two; too, is pathetic.

I will admit that I AM anal about spelling because it says so much about us, our intelligence and the ability to even fill out a job or credit application. One misspelled word in a resume can wipe you out of the running among hundreds of candidates because it shows that you didn’t care enough to make it perfect.

Not being able to spell correctly or do simple math is unfortunately a product of our schools today. Everyone should “give a shit.”

41 No Excuses July 29, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I am anal, do have mommy/daddy issues, and kid issues, but haven’t tried any meds yet. (Does caffeine count?) I make the same mistakes that I complain about occasionally, and it pisses me off when I catch myself, because I care about how I appear to others, as well as to myself.
Atticus, I think you usually like the other me….and I don’t usually correct a well-thought-out comment.

42 BusBoy July 29, 2010 at 7:02 pm

@21 L33t Hax0r (nerd)

I really get a chuckle when someone says “I can track you by your IP…” yawn… that is WAY to easy of a thing to spoof and if you work for a large company you are probably exiting out of a single internet gateway so most IPs will look the same. Hell if everyone from my company posted here the Mayor’d have a TON of post all coming from about 6 diff IP’s.

What I’d like to know was what was the point? If you were trying to get IPs from someone who was always anon and during the “anon prohibition” they registered with (heaven forbid) real account info. I guess thats a way to grab the no so smart person. lol.

My take… I like the login feature as not a whole lot of people here DONT know how to NOT feed the Trolls.

About the whole “jeez, I dont like the mean racist people/posts” Heres a great quote… “You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.”

43 observer July 29, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Cudos to you Babs; however, it’s a matter of knowing before you type, what verbage is correct so that you don’t have to go back and apologize for your mistakes.

44 Anon E. Mouse July 29, 2010 at 7:24 pm

You totally like spelted that their word wronged.

45 Atticus Thraxx July 29, 2010 at 7:25 pm

No need to apologize observer, being wrong can be humbling, I hear. You understand that this is a public blog and not a resume, right? And as far as I know, math skills are secondary to posting on a blog. Look feel free to be a smuck are try and correct spelling/grammar, just don’t be surprised if your ignored or attacked for it. And why anyone would waste their time doing it…..

46 BornBitter July 29, 2010 at 7:41 pm

I’ve never done anything so simple that made me feel so good. Now lets cross our fingers.

47 Shasta Daisy July 29, 2010 at 7:49 pm

I’ve always been Shasta Daisy….since day one. Right Mayor?

Explanation…Shasta Daisies were my mother’s favorite flower.

Some of you know who I really am….I like to smile and make other people smile too.

48 Enuff is Enuff July 29, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Observer,
I work with numbers all day so spelling is a “non-event” for me….could careless, could give a flying rats ass or give a freakin whoop……I understand the importance of “there, their, they’re” and “no, know”, your, you’re”. It’s, its” etc as it does effect the content of the sentence, but for non-context words…………type away folk…..let the thought, observations and opinions flow…………..have fun, speak up and share your thoughts with the community. Babs – Rock N Roll

49 solanodave July 29, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Busboy, I think the whole thing about tracking ip addresses goes back to the owner of the blog being able to track and if he/she wishes store those ip’s for later review.

The Mayor says he does not do that.

50 Enuff is Enuff July 29, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Atticus Thraxx
Schmuck if you want to use the Yiddish term :-)
Or you can use Putz

51 Not Anon July 29, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I kind of liked changing my registered nick name to Anonymous during the required log in period just to keep posting as Anonymous. I noticed that there were a couple other people that figured that out as well. Now that the mayor turned of the log in requirement there is not reason to post as Anonymous.

52 fedup July 29, 2010 at 7:56 pm

It’s “Kudos”, not “Cudos” numbnuts. Sweet, sweet irony.

53 SunDown July 29, 2010 at 8:06 pm

I would like to see the log on feature kept permanent and since everyone is nicer when they are logged in turn off moderation.

Britgirl I don’t think it is possible to stop everything that is perceived as a racial comment. It is a subjective perception what may be regarded as racist by one person may not be regarded as racist by others. Some people get there feelings hurt just because someone says something that they disagree with.

54 MO July 29, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Free Speech in open posting?
Well maybe.
But the law ”freedom of speech” does not apply in a blog, or other forum.
You are a guest, and the rules set forth by the owner or moderator rule.

Yup guys, as said up there….SPELL check is included in the ”better browsers”…I use Firefox because it’s so easy to use. I am afraid to use IE, due it it’s holes.

But I misspell and it’s called a typo, cause my fingernails are too long.
And I have crumbs under my keys…so as fast as I type, some keystrokes never touch…..drat those crumbs. (They come from my breakfast Schwan’s Toastwich…great with my morning coffee)….

Mr.Mayor I think I’d like the more civil login program.
I had to login earlier to post.

BTW I need a grammar and punctuation feather. My double negatives and dangling participles are atrocious.

55 MO July 29, 2010 at 8:30 pm

~~feather ????~

feature ~

56 observer July 29, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Thanks for the correction “fedup”.

57 No Excuses July 29, 2010 at 8:57 pm

Wow, how easy was that? So many enjoying spitting out the barbs they had been choking down since Monday.

58 Cowellian July 29, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Shasta Daisy brings a smile wherever she goes.

59 Babs July 29, 2010 at 9:01 pm

This has to be a slow news day, all these posts about spelling.

Tony came home and told his father he got an “A” in spelling…his Dad said,”you dope, there’s no ‘A’ in spelling.

60 A-NON July 29, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Thank you for the Firefox spellchecker, Anonapuss. That was very nice of you. On Sunday I got a beautiful Cherry Blossom theme as an add-on from Firefox, and now today I also have a dictionary.

61 White Water Boater July 29, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Hi Mayor,

On Firefox it still makes you put in your name and email. I was going to make a humorous anonymous statement but it wouldn’t let me.

62 JOHN L. July 29, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Quite interesting mayor. Made quite the fodder for conversation……I like it,I like it alot.

63 Anonagrumpypuss July 29, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Eh, every now and again, a little nice slips by. Your welcome! I loved firefox fro years den iz divorced it for chrome! :D
I still use firefox on my ubuntu systems, chrome works best (for me) on windoz.
LOL its not a thesus, liten up on the grammar natzei

You can file this under ‘Judge and you shall be judged’

Observer #40
“To perhaps make a “typo” is one thing, but to constantly not be able to use your; you’re; there; they’re; their; its; it;s; to; two; too, is pathetic.”

Observer #43
“Cudos to you Babs”

Cudos???

Unfortunately you went on to say ” One misspelled word in a resume can wipe you out of the running among hundreds of candidates because it shows that you didn’t care enough to make it perfect. Not being able to spell correctly or do simple math is unfortunately a product of our schools today. Everyone should “give a shit.””

I hate when that “perfect” thingy goes awry. fedup said it well … sweet, sweet irony.

65 Not Anon July 30, 2010 at 12:47 am

It worked.

66 Not Real Name July 30, 2010 at 5:43 am

White Water Boater,

It doesn’t have to be a real name and email…..

67 EdiBirsan July 30, 2010 at 7:11 am

Spelling? When your name is spelled Edi and it is pronounced Eddie and all your family names of your grandparents from three different countries were changed at Ellis Island, it feels like I am predisposed genetically towards misspelling. I love spell check! If I had had it when I went to school it would have added to my grades. I was always a bad speller (cannot do phonics).
My teachers (in the 50′s and 60′s) were always spelling pro’s, hell I remember getting marked down on a Physics test that I aced and wound up with a 98 or so because I misspelled gravity (gravety !)
So I generally cut people a lot of slack on blog posting and spelling errors, but in my business if I spot an error then I get it corrected all the time.

68 observer July 30, 2010 at 7:42 am

Buck Million, I already apologized for the “cudos/kudos” thing, and I just put in a misplaced comma in “it’s”. Thanks for pointing it out.

69 Eye on MDUSD July 30, 2010 at 7:44 am

Anyone see all the shenanigans going on over at the MDUSD?

70 Anon July 30, 2010 at 10:15 am

You mean on the parent blog? Crazy. But some people need to get a life.

71 shoedog July 30, 2010 at 11:15 am

MY CHILDREN ARE MY LIFE! people with children are more important we know better

72 Buck Million July 30, 2010 at 11:25 am

Observer,
I never saw an apology nor am I looking for one. It wasn’t a misplaced comma and you know that. Three for three. I think that makes you a candidate for the “IRONY” award this week.

73 Buck Million July 30, 2010 at 11:29 am

…………waiting.

74 Panic July 30, 2010 at 11:32 am

Hey uh you guys? Those anons weren’t trolls. You haven’t seen trolls yet…

And why so stereotypist on those who correct spelling? Is there something wrong with telling people the difference between ‘hers’ and ‘her’s'?

75 No Excuses July 30, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Panic: Cute. Someone’s going to ask you the difference. Ha Ha

76 Concordanon July 30, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I don’t know, Mr. Mayor. If you still require a poster to enter a name and e-mail address, then they aren’t really anonymous, are they?

77 Mr. Mayor July 30, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Try logging out first, then enter an anonymous comment.

78 Concordanon July 30, 2010 at 2:24 pm

Nope, still can’t post anonymously. I logged out, closed down Internet Explorer, then started all over again. But I still can’t post anonymously. I get an error that says I have to enter the required fields (name and e-mail).

79 Concordanon July 30, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Can’t post anonymously using Mozilla Firefox, either. Still get the same error (must enter required fields – name/e-mail).

80 Mr July 30, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Saw this coming. After I saw the drop in posts I figured site hits went down and so would ad revenue then theoretically. I agree the site was waaaayyy too goody goody with poems and too much love and hand holding with anons gone. Without anonymous people u also dont get a true representation of te community opinion

81 Mr. Mayor July 30, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Actually, the number of comments were down, but the hits were WAY up. I was seriously surprised when I looked at the site numbers after I got rid of anonymous comments.

82 Just anon for now July 30, 2010 at 11:39 pm

“Cudos to you Babs; however, it’s a matter of knowing before you type, what verbage is correct so that you don’t have to go back and apologize for your mistakes.
