Who can identify this giant insect?

July 28, 2010 12:22 pm · 32 comments

This insect, which was found in CLAYCORD the other day, looks like a mix of a fly & bumblebee.

It’s about as large as a quarter, but has no stinger, and its wings are about 1/2-3/4th’s of an inch long. Also, it’s completely  black.

Can anybody identify this strange bug?

You can click on each photo for a much larger view.

Also, is everybody still having major bug problems in CLAYCORD?

UPDATE: Thanks everybody for your answers, we now know it’s a carpenter bee!

I forgot to ask if there’s a prize for being first.

Awesome, thanks, Dangerous! It looks like you’re correct.

yep Carpenter Beetle I think as well…they do hurt when they sting

6 Claycordian July 28, 2010 at 12:38 PM

I’m not having any major bug problems any more *knock on wood*

That was very strange, but only lasted a few nights.

talk about scary…last night at City Council Mtg….I park and go to get walker out of back of car….yellowjackets flies out…and then I see golf ball size nests all in the edge of trunk lid….5 of them…had to call son to come and spray right there in parking lot…..Son says it’s because I don’t move my car that much…scared the poop out of me…

I’ve seen and heard these insects slam into my windows. A couple of weeks ago during a hot spell there were MANY of them flying around while I was out trying to walk my dog. I decided to wear long sleeves and my collar up. There were also hundreds of brown small fly like insects. I hung fly tape and sprayed bug killer near my doorways & windows and that seem to take care of it.

Carpenter bee’s. We get them every year. They bore holes into our over hang, irritating but seem harmless.

10 Cowellian July 28, 2010 at 1:03 PM

Are you certain about that? That sure looks like a cornsnake bee.

11 ConcordCatLady July 28, 2010 at 1:04 PM

I am glad to find out what these are, as I have some that go into a knothole in my backyard fence. They are BIG and scary looking.

12 Lazy Ike July 28, 2010 at 1:26 PM

Don’t kill them……they pollinate just as well as honey bees

13 bosco July 28, 2010 at 1:40 PM

I had one that made a nest in a bird house.

14 drvrdadca July 28, 2010 at 2:27 PM

Looks a lot like Helen Allen, or a dessert item from that restaurant everyone wants to move in to town (name escapes me at the moment).

Those things are crazy. A pair of them commandeered one of the bird nests under the awning in front of my house. Threw all the eggs on the porch and our now using the nest for their own evil purposes. Every day the momma bird comes back and looks sadly at the situation, but the Carpenter Bee’s are too big, so she has to back away. It’s really horrible, but that’s nature.

That’s very funny, a fly marrying a bumblebee! I told you I’d shoot!
But you didn’t believe me! Why didn’t you believe me?!

Anyone who can quote from Ren and Stimpy is a winner in my book.

At least Carpenter Bees tend to fly very slowly, if I remember right. Easy to run away from if you’re scared of bees (or easy to ignore).

Oh my, I’m glad I haven’t seen one of these yet, unless I have and just asumed it was a big black bumblebee, which I guess in a way it is….either way, YUCK and NO THANKS

That has to be one of the scariest-looking bugs I’ve ever seen. And I thought potato bugs were ugly!

its one of them sweet innocent carpenter bees, they arnt going to hurt no one less you grab n abuse em. we use to make carpenter bee houses by drilling nice bee sized holes into a piece of 2×4 then nailing it to the eave of our porch.

BTW i notice the Discovery channels film crew in Concord starting to pack up their stuff today.

It’s a corn snake.

(I can’t believe I’m the first one to say that this thread. It’s very exciting.)

25 anonamom July 28, 2010 at 6:59 PM

What was the Discovery Channel doing here—did I miss something?

26 its a sick sad world July 28, 2010 at 7:25 PM

#25 they were filming a pilot @ Ken the Bug Guy’s shop

27 tracer03 July 28, 2010 at 7:55 PM

There’s no such thing as a carpenter beetle. What you have there is a carpenter bee.

28 anonamom July 28, 2010 at 8:04 PM

See—I was first! Where’s my prize?

29 tal62 July 29, 2010 at 3:11 PM

I have a ton of these carpenter bees, they have made swiss cheese out of my backyard arbor. They love unpainted wood like redwood…all the sawdust from the tunnels is a real pain, and I bet its doing a number on the structure of my arbor!

30 Bubba July 29, 2010 at 3:15 PM

It’s just looking for an Olive Garden.

31 A-NON July 29, 2010 at 9:25 PM

I assume that one is dead? The similar ones I see are flying around pollinating my tomatoes.

32 containerguy July 29, 2010 at 10:26 PM

i love tomatoes
